Best Birthday Present Ever

Bill and Charlie Weasley woke up that morning to the smell of breakfast wafting up from the kitchen. They hurried up and dressed before charging down the stairs two at a time. They were greeted with the sight of Mitsy setting the table. “Good morning Sirs!” she cried out when she spotted them. “Master has breakfast almost done.”

“I hope it’s sausage and scrambled eggs,” Charlie whispered to his brother with a grin.

A few minutes later James emerged from the kitchen carrying a large cast iron skillet. “Morning boys,” he greeted them with a smile. “Did you sleep alright?”

Everyone took a seat as James set the skillet down. “Sausage and eggs with extra cheddar cheese, just how you boys like it,” James said as he started dishing out large spoonfuls onto his plate.

“It’s you that likes the extra cheese,” Bill laughed.

“Well you’re gonna eat it anyway and like it,” James stuck his tongue out.

When breakfast was finished James sent the boys to look around to make sure they didn’t forget anything. Then it was time to take them home.

Lily sat on the couch and anxiously watched the fireplace. James would be coming with Bill and Charlie any minute. She looked around the decorated house. “I hope he likes the surprise,” she spoke out loud.

“He’ll love it dear,” Molly spoke as she plopped herself down beside the pregnant red head.

“He needs to hurry up and get here,” she whimpered. “The suspense is killing me!”

It was then that green flames erupted from the fireplace. Molly and Arthur quickly jumped up from their seats and waited. Bill was the first to step through; followed closely by Charlie. “He’s coming Mum,” the eldest Weasley boy grinned.

Lily climbed to her feet as fast as an eight month pregnant woman was capable of and waited. The fireplace erupted in flames again and James stepped through.

“Surprise!” everyone yelled.

James stood speechless. His eyes roamed around the room and looked at all the decorations. “For me?” he asked, not quite believing it.

Lily nodded and hugged him tight. “Happy birthday sweetheart,” she whispered in his ear before kissing him passionately.

“So you weren’t feeling sick last night?” he asked, backing away a few steps.

She shook her head, afraid he was angry at her. He sighed and shook his head slightly. “I have to admit… It was clever,” he said as he hugged her again.

“So you’re not mad”? Lily asked as she looked up into his eyes.

“No… While you did worry me a little, your intentions were good.”

She smiled and hugged him again. “So you like it?” she asked anxiously.

“I love it.”

“Come on out everyone!” Molly yelled.

James couldn’t help but laugh as a string of people came down the stairs. Everyone from the Order of the Phoenix was there; everyone except Albus Dumbledore that is. It came as no great surprise to James. The surprise would’ve been if he had come.

The party lasted the rest of the day. Everyone sat around the Weasley house eating all the food Molly had set out and chatted with each other. On a card table set up in the corner was a large stack of open presents. James was the happiest he’d been in a long time. He didn’t think it could possibly get any better.

The guests all started to leave around dinner time. Pretty soon only Remus and Sirius remained. “That was a great party wasn’t it?” Sirius commented as he sat reclined on the couch with a big grin.

“Indeed,” Remus agreed. “It was the first time we’ve ever actually been able to surprise you James. You’re slipping mate,” he teased.

James just stuck out his tongue and laughed. “Don’t expect it to happen again.”

“I should start cleaning up,” Molly sighed as she stood up.

“Let me help,” Lily said as she started to climb to her feet. As soon as she stood up she fell back down; her arm wrapped around her belly, and her face twisted in pain.

James jumped to his feet and ran to kneel beside her. “Lily, are you ok sweetie?”

The rest of the room watched her intently. “I think… I think I’m going into labor.”

They wasted no time in getting Lily to the hospital. She was admitted right away and their doctor was paged.

Remus and Sirius were sent out to the waiting room. James however, refused to leave his wife’s bedside. “I’m sorry for ruining your birthday,” she whimpered once they were alone.

“No…” he shook his head and smiled at her, lightly brushing her cheek. “You didn’t ruin anything. In fact, I think you’re about to give me the best birthday present I’ve ever received.”

James continued to sit with her as the minutes turned into hours. He only left her long enough to send Remus to the nearest wizard post office to send out the good news. As midnight crept closer, everyone started to wonder if the baby would be born on James’ birthday, or the day after. Midnight came and went with no baby. It wasn’t until nearly two am that Lily Potter was wheeled into the delivery room.

Nearly an hour later James came out with a goofy grin on his face and a baby in his arms. “It’s a boy!” he cried out.

“Congratulations!” Remus and Sirius said at the same time, both getting to their feet.

“Can I hold him?” Sirius asked.

“Of course!” James laughed as he handed him over.

“Have you named him yet?” Sirius asked as he carefully took the baby into his arms, holding him close to his chest.

James nodded. “His name is Harry James Potter.”

Everyone took turns holding the newborn before he was finally given back to his mother. Then Remus and Sirius left so that they could have time alone to bond as a family.

Lily sat up in the hospital bed cradling her son in her arms. She looked over at James with a serious expression. “This is the start of something big isn’t it?” she spoke quietly.

James only nodded as he sat down beside her. “You have no idea,” he said as he gazed down at Harry.
