Chapter 24
“Have you told him about me yet?” Paula asked one evening as she and Severus sat in the wagon eating stew.
“Told who what?”
“Voldemort, about me. Some of the students have been behaving oddly lately, mostly the purebloods. I think perhaps their parents have been informed about me and their own prejudices have been relayed back to the students. If you have not informed him yet, then now is the time to do so.”
Looking up from his dish he paled. “How did you know? The Headmaster I suppose.”
“No, your soul tells me. Tell him soon Severus. Do not take punishment for tardiness merely because you feel a need to protect me.”
“Is that what you think, that I am trying to protect you?”
“Delay the inevitable perhaps. Tell him of me Severus, tell him soon.”
Holding her gaze for a while, he wondered why he had not yet revealed her presence to the Dark Lord. He should have done so much sooner, but he could always say he was waiting for her to reveal some secret or other.
“In what way are the students behaving oddly?”
“Gypsies are portrayed as dirty, that we chor, (steal) incur bibaxt. (bad luck) It is nothing nevo. (new) So now they avoid me as much as possible. They shy away from my questions, try not to interact with me. They still want to learn, but their parents are ignorant and make the children fearful of me. They are dilo (imbeciles) that dick (look) no further then the ends of their noses. I can deal with it, they will see Vortimo (the truth) and forget. In time.”
Severus apparated to the Dark Lords chambers that weekend. “I have news my Lord.” He said, lowering his eyes before the serpentine man before him.
“I am sure you have Snape. A little late though don’t you think. I already know of the new defence teacher at Hogwarts, she murdered a whole group of vampires that served me.”
“I know my Lord, but I was aware the survivor would alert you to her presence, I thought it best to wait and see what else I could discover about her.”
Voldemort leaned forward in his seat. “And have you discovered anything of interest?”
“Yes my Lord. She is a soul searcher, brought in at the Headmasters request. She is also very talented in the art of wandless magic. Very strong wandless magic. She only uses her wand to teach the students my Lord, and she is teaching them to an extremely high standard.”
Voldemort’s red eyes flashed angrily. “Anything else?”
“Yes my Lord. She seems to have a more than occasional acquaintance with the Minister himself. She refers to him as ‘Eggy’ my Lord. I also had occasion to witness her talent with a dragon my Lord.”
“Ha. A dragon? How so?”
Severus explained what happened with the dragon, and how Paula released it despite the objections of those in charge of the sanctuary.
“You did well to wait Snape. I am pleased. Let me know if you discover more about her. Befriend her, that way you may find out more.”
“Yes my Lord.”
“The students will be departing for the Christmas holidays in a couple of days, do you have any plans of your own for the holiday season?” Severus was lounged comfortably on the cushioned bench that ran along part of the vurdon wall. His shoes were kicked under the table, several cushion behind his back. He was skimming through the latest edition of the Daily Prophet, drinking a cup of tea that Paula had just put on the table beside him.
“I thought I might take off for a couple of weeks, head down to Cheshire and collect my horse. Three and a half months is a long time, I miss her.”
“You have a horse, why?”
She let out a small laugh. “He pulls my vurdon when I do not feel like driving.”
“Oh. So what exactly do you plan to do, shrink the poor creature and load it into that contraption of yours?”
“No I do not. I will take the vurdon with me and Riley can pull it back. Orlaeo has been very kind in caring for him all this time, but now I want him with me.”
“Orlaeo? Is he Romany also?”
“Yes, Orlaeo is most definitely Romany, a distant cousin of my grandfathers. She and the clan always spend Yule tide in Cheshire.”
“She? I thought …”
“You though she was a he, I know.”
“It is of no consequence to me what gender she is, I was merely curious.” Deep down he was pleased she would not be visiting another male friend. Still, he would prefer she did not go at all. He had become used to having her around and enjoyed spending much of his spare time with her in the wagon. “Is there no other way of bringing your horse here, other than literally walking it back?”
“I could apparate and ride him at full gallop for several days, than watch as he collapses from exhaustion. Yes, I think that might do the trick.” Sarcasm dripped from her voice.
“That was not what I meant and you know it.” He sat up and narrowed his eyes at her. “I was merely enquiring if there were some other method of transportation.
“I know.” She said, sighing as she flopped into the seat opposite him. “Severus I have never stayed in one place for so long. I need cheros on the drom.”
“Paula, you are doing it again.”
“Cheros is time, drom is road.” She said, a slight agitation in her voice. She had not told Severus how trapped she was feeling lately. No mater how big this place was, she was still within the confines of it’s walls and she wanted out, if only for a short while. “Actually I was going to ask you to travel down with me, then you can drive the hearse back”
“Me, drive that monstrosity. I have neither the inclination nor the knowledge to do such a thing.”
“Well thank you. I would have taught you to drive it, it is not that difficult you know. Oh never mind.” She told him testily. “I will just have to apparate back to Orlaeo’s once Riley and I are back here.”
Severus was about to pick up his cup and take a drink when Paula snatched it away and emptied the contents outside, then she proceeded to wash the cups and teapot.
“I had not finished with that.“ He told her, feeling quite crabbily himself now.
“Dordie.” (exclamation) She almost shouted, making him jump.
“I do hope that was not an insult aimed at me.” He stated.
“No it was not. If I insult you, you will know about it.” Paula turned her back on him pouting, and folded her arms, a scowl on her face.
“Alright, alright, I will try and learn how to operate the infernal thing.” He could not stand to see her sulking. “But I am warning you, if it does not do as I tell it, the deal is off.”
He was greeted with a beaming smile that took his breath away. “Had I known the affect agreeing to drive that contraption of yours would have on you, I would have suggested it myself before now.”
