AN: Okay, just two chapters and an epilogue. We must have an epilogue, since Ms. Rowling has set a precedent.
unneeded: Babies, babies everywhere. When they start coming, it’s like it’s raining infants.
jujukitty: Magic is amazing. I think that the spell is the reason it tested that way. It wouldn’t take as long for these babies to be conceived, since the curse was so accommodating. Let’s just let that bit go, and suspend out disbelief, okie dokie?
Chapter Twenty-four: Delivery is everything
Harry walked proudly through the halls of the castle and up the stairs. Well, he hadn't actually walked for several weeks now. Harry waddled and did so very slowly. He had spent the summer at Hogwarts, along with the Malfoys, the teachers, Cedric and his family, the Weasley and Granger families, and strangely Roger Davies.
Now, as he headed up to the classroom that had been converted into a special exam room for Lucius and Snape, he thought about the coming school year. It was half August, just after his birthday and he was feeling good. Voldemort had been quiet this summer, presumably stewing on his loss of Lucius, the Parkinsons, and the Goyles, and Crabbes. Apparently, the two boys were also bent and the families decided to switch sides and try for Hermione's curse, as well. They were presently out of the country, enjoying a respite before they returned and joined forces for the battle to come.
Draco was not doing as well as Harry, so the dark haired boy kept his distance. A whinging blond was not conducive to his condition. Cedric was great, overcoming the odds by carrying two babies and still keeping his spirits high. Oh, yeah. Cedric, it turns out, was having twins.
Harry was headed for his ninth month check, due for a full scan and battery of potions, and he wasn't looking forward to it. He had been promised a special compensation for going first, and he planned on cashing in. Draco owed him for more than that, after he'd been such a git all month.
Hermione had given birth, two weeks before, to a beautiful baby boy, named Daniel, and his blond lover had nearly passed out when her water broke in the Great Hall. He'd been insufferable ever since. Harry hoped Draco went into labor first, so Harry could get some payback. He stepped through the doorway and was immediately the subject of intense scrutiny. He rolled his eyes and Snape and Malfoy Sr. pulled him toward the table and began casting their spells. It was nothing new, and not even as scary after so many times, so Harry just sighed and waited until the screens were done so he could see his baby.
“Mr. Potter. You are right on schedule and there’s something here we weren’t expecting. Would you like to see?” Lucius asked as Snape stared at the film in the blond’s hand.
“Yes, please.” Harry had learned that polite was a free ticket to Lucius and Narcissa’s good graces. A few well-placed expressions and they were putty in his hands.
“Look, here.” Lucius pointed and Harry’s eyes grew wider. “There’s the answer to how you boys will be giving birth. Miss Granger’s spell is extremely accommodating.”
“Yeah. Remind me to thank her, okay?” Harry growled as he traced the extended portion of his womb where it appeared to be creating a birth canal. He was already imagining just how this was going to feel.
“Will you be able to send Draco up for his screening?” Lucius asked and Harry rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“You’re on your own with that. I’m not going near him, not until he’s either given birth or apologized for the way he’s been at me lately.” Harry stated in no uncertain terms.
“But, you must understand how he feels. He’s been so ill with this pregnancy.” Lucius explained and Harry felt one twinge of regret. Draco’s morning sickness had lasted for nearly all of eight months. But, that didn’t excuse him, not in Harry’s eyes. Cedric had been sick too, but he hadn’t been so snarky and irritable. Nope, he was standing his ground on this.
“Doesn’t matter. I’m just as pregnant as he is, and I haven’t been abusive. I’m going to Gryffindor tower to see Danny. He should be up from his nap by now.”
Daniel Weasley was very awake, and very angry about something. Harry heard him screaming from the portrait of the fat lady and at first he thought it was Molly doing the yelling. He came in to find almost all of the females that were currently in the castle, Mrs. Granger, Molly and Ginny, Mrs. Diggory and Mrs. Malfoy, along with Professor McGonagall, Madame Pince, Madame Hooch and Professor Sprout, all fussing over him and talking at once.
“What’s going on?” he asked and the group turned to him. Daniel looked over to him from the middle of this gathering and immediately stopped crying and squinted his tiny eyes in Harry’s direction. “Hey there, Danny. What are these ladies doing to upset my buddy? Come here, Mate.” He stepped up and scooped the baby out of Molly’s arms and walked away from the clutch of women. “They don’t understand that a guy needs some time alone, away from all that attention, right? Let’s have a change and a bottle and see about some quiet time, okay?”
Harry had reached the dressing table that was set up in the common room and was now stripping the blanket and diaper cover off of the little boy. He wrinkled his nose at the smell that wafted up from the mess his little shared godson had made, and proceeded to cast a few cleaning charms that Flitwick and Madame Pomfrey had taught him.
Hermione and Ron had argued for days about the choice of godparents for Daniel, and finally decided that Harry, Seamus and Dean would share the role of godfather, while Parvati Patil, Tracey Davis and Hannah Abbott shared the title of godmother. Hermione had found the three girls to be priceless friends as she progressed in her condition. Tracey was the only one who could keep the rest of the school off of her as she started to show and wanted a little normalcy in her life. Miss Davis was equally good at protecting Harry, Draco and Cedric from unwanted attention. Harry was sure that she would be name godmother of more than one child before she managed to have her own family.
Daniel let Harry change him and took a bottle that Hermione handed him without complaint. He burped loudly when coaxed and cooed at the green-eyed boy when Harry played with him. It was about the time that Harry was giving the baby back to his mother, that Pansy Parkinson was heard screaming for him through the portrait hole and he hurried out to see what had gotten the Slytherin girl’s panties in a twist.
“Draco . . . hurry!” She cried without catching her breath, grabbing his robe and hauling him down the corridor. Ron, who had followed him out, tagged along behind, muttering something under his breath.
“What did you say?” Harry called back, not allowed to slow his pace by the girl dragging him along.
“I said, I hope you don’t bruise easily.” Ron called and Harry raised an eyebrow in question. Ron said nothing more.
Draco was reading a muggle book about childbirth when his father came into the Prefect’s lounge and requested his presence in the exam room. He ignored his father, something he had never done before, and Lucius levitated him and floated him through the halls.
“Hey! This can’t be good for the baby, Father!” He snapped, but Lucius ignored him, this time. In the exam room, Draco nearly snarled as his father and the head of Slytherin house went through the motions of their spells and charms. He refused to be cooperative and simply scowled at their attempts to mollify him. When they had completed their check-up, he jumped from the table so that he could leave without being treated to their further coddling. He did not need to be pampered, he just wanted to be left alone for a bit. He was tired, stiff and his back had been aching all morning. When his feet hit the stone floor, he was aware of a new sensation. His body released a sudden flow of warm liquid that drenched his trousers and started to cool immediately. “What the . . . .?”
“Draco, be careful. Oh, my.” Lucius gasped and caught hold of the table.
“I’ll call Poppy and Narcissa. Get him on the table. I don’t know if we have time to get him to the hospital ward.” Snape said with authority, though his face had gone even more sallow.
“What’s happening?” Draco asked and both men took hold of his arms and lifted him into the air.
“You appear to be in Labor, Son. Just relax.” Lucius said as he banished the boy’s clothing and replaced them with a soft cotton gown. “Severus is getting the nurse and your mother. You need to relax and wait for them to get here. Do not give birth until they do!”
“As if I can control that. Harry! I need Harry. And Cedric. Get Potter and Diggory, at once!” the younger blond snapped as his eyes took on a panicked look. Lucius cast a spell to keep him from falling from the table and rushed out the door. He found Pansy Parkinson and her little sister Penny in the hall and sent them on these very errands.
The Parkinsons were more like crowd followers than devoted minions. When Lucius let it be known that he had changed sides, they were quick to join him, and their home had been destroyed in the aftermath of the Dark Lord’s fury. They didn’t have the best wards, and they were lucky to have been out of the country on a vacation at the time. They had been at Hogwarts ever since, recovering from the tragedy. Dumbledore had vouched for them, though Harry was sure that Snape’s recent brewing of replacement Veritaserum had more to do with it than intuition on the old man’s part.
Now, as she dragged Harry up the stairs, she saw her sister with an equally confused Cedric in tow, and they converged just outside of the door to the special exam room. She was still out of breath, from the exertion of dragging a pregnant boy through the castle, so she just gestured for him to go in. Harry and Cedric exchanged a few looks before opening the door and stepping in.
They were met with screaming and swept up in the bustle of the room, Poppy Pomfrey pushing Harry up to stand near the blond’s head while Cedric stood just off to his side.
“Keep him calm. He’s making it worse by panicking.” The mediwitch said and Harry looked down to see grey eyes pleading with him as Draco panted and cried out. He put his hand on the side of the blond’s head and brushed the soft locks down with his fingers.
“Is it time, Draco? You’ll be a father soon, and then we’ll show that old curse. It’ll be okay, you know. I’m gonna do it too, so you’ve got to show me up, alright? Show me that you’re better at having babies than I am. I’ll make you a bet, okay? The one who makes the biggest fuss, has to do this again. If you win, you get to have the cure, but if you don’t then I do. Cedric will be our judge. How’s that sound?”
Draco sneered at him and looked over to where the Hufflepuff was watching. Cedric locked eyes with him and Draco nodded. Cedric nodded back. “You’re on, Potter.” Draco gasped out as he grabbed Cedric’s hand and squeezed. “Hold tight, Diggory. I’ll need your support now, like you never knew before.”
“Me, too.” Harry demanded moving to take the blond’s other hand and pat it gently. Draco took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
“On the next contraction you’ll need to push, Darling.” Narcissa said from between Draco’s upraised knees. “Ready?”
With a quick nod, Draco filled his lungs and clamped down on his two lover’s hands, gripping so tight that they both feared they’d lose feeling in their fingers before the baby arrived. He pushed with his body, willing his child into the world, as he remained conscious of the two young wizards at his sides. The pain was bearable, though only just, and his body felt like it was being torn in two. He stopped only when the contraction ceased and he needed to breathe again.
“Very good, Mr. Malfoy. The next one should do it. Just one more push. You have that in you, surely.” Poppy said as she held a wand in the air and stood like she was preparing for battle.
“What are you going to do?” Draco snapped, already defending his baby against a possible threat.
“I’ve got to sever the cord, and it takes precision wandsmanship. I’m not exactly up on my delivery skills, Mr. Malfoy. This is only the second baby I’ve delivered in over twenty years, but I’ll manage. Just concentrate on pushing and leave the rest to us.” She said condescendingly, but Draco was already caught up in another contraction and not listening.
Harry used his free hand to prop his lover up, holding Malfoy so that he could put all of his effort into pushing and not worry about his own support. It was this position that made it possible for Harry to watch the soft blond curls that covered the head of their child as it came into view. It was mesmerizing and he couldn’t take his eyes off of it. He was so enthralled that he failed to hear Madame Pomfrey announce the child’s sex and it was whisked away so quickly he didn’t even get a glimpse.
When Narcissa brought the bundled baby back and laid it in Draco’s arms, he found himself staring at it again, and only snapped out of it when she asked her son, “Have you chosen a name?”
Draco smiled and nodded. “Scorpius Hyperion Harold Malfoy.”
Harry’s face broke out in the widest grin he could manage and he leaned in to kiss Draco on the cheek. “Thank you.” He said but the blond shook his head tolerantly.
“Thank you, Harry Potter. You broke the curse and saved my family. You saved us from the Dark Lord, from the wrath of the public when the war ends and the light gets to punish his followers, and you saved us from dying out as a wizarding line. You are my hero.”
Harry blushed and looked down, modesty coloring his cheeks and flushing his whole face. He had never been so happy.
He looked up to see his lover place a soft kiss on their son’s cheek and a warm sensation flowed out of him.
“Mr. Potter?” Narcissa said and he turned moony eyes her way. “Have you been experiencing any cramps or back aches?” she asked and Harry thought about the question just long enough to note that the warm sensation he had felt was now running down his leg.
“Sweet Merlin!” he cried as the room began to swim around him.
