It wasn't difficult to accept that once I lowered my defenses and initiated a physical relationship, that aspect of the relationship took off like a bat out of hell. Additionally, I was in a ridiculously good mood. Of course, that might also have had something to do with the fact that while I was getting laid on a regular basis with both twins, I was also cementing a new relationship with Lee Jordan.
Every time we met, there was some new tidbit to unearth. I liked that he was getting to know me as I was, without the sexual distraction. And he was every bit as interesting as anyone I'd ever met. Some of the stories he told me! If I hadn't known better, I'd have sworn he was making them up. The one about how he and the twins had tried to fool an Aging Line a couple of years ago was one of my favorites so far. Long white beards, indeed.
About a week before Halloween, Lee owled me and asked me to meet up with him. So it was I found myself waiting for him at a small cafe outside of Leicester Square, huddled against the chilly air and sipping on a hot chocolate.
Happily, I didn't have long to wait. Just as I was finishing the whipped cream on top, I caught sight of Lee bustling down the street, his dreadlocks swinging wildly. I waved, and he headed straight over.
“I'm assuming you've got something excellent to share,” I said, rising to give him a hug.
Hugging me tightly, Lee chuckled. “Oh, I've got just the thing to make your day.”
As we sat down, I finally saw the excited light in his eyes. “I'm intrigued. Do share.”
Lee grinned. “Everything's right on track. Just got an owl from Fred, suggesting we go out for a night of it. Said there's someone he'd like me to meet. Very excited about it, thinks we'll get along very well.”
Giggling, I clapped my hands. “Perfect! Not that I'm complaining, but what brought this on? I thought you were going to have to suggest it.”
Shrugging, Lee replied, “I sent an owl mentioning it had been too damn long since we'd had a proper outing, and I was taking a break from lending out my voice. Suppose Fred and George just took it from there.”
“Oh, this is fabulous. And I know just the spot we'll be going to.”
“Where's that?”
“Little pub near my flat. I'm actually calling in a request for help from one of the guys who works there, as I want a documented account of what's going to happen.”
Lee raised an eyebrow. “Won't that get a bit complicated?”
“No. Michael's a bartender. He's used to unusual requests, and besides, he's never turned me down for anything yet.”
“I'm sure he hasn't. But how many times have you turned him down?”
I gave him a minor glare but couldn't hide the smirk. “You know, Lee, I'm starting to feel as if you're getting to know me a little too well.”
“Isn't that the idea?”
His cheeky good mood was infectious, and I grinned back at him. “I'm not saying that's a bad thing. But now I'm afraid I'll have to test you.”
Lee leaned forward, an eager expression on his face. “Test me? Ducks, I think I've got everything I need to know about you.”
His confidence made me eager. I chuckled wickedly, determined to find out if it was deserved. “All right, Mr. Jordan. Let's see if you're right.” I leaned forward, keeping my hands warm on the mug in front of me. Narrowing my eyes, I quickly sifted through a few questions to ask. “Where did I come from?”
Lee's grin turned wicked. “Quite probably the heavens are missing an angel, far as I can tell. Or maybe the other side, given that razor sharp tongue of yours.”
Rolling my eyes, I couldn't help laughing. “Ah, yes, I forgot that I take the elevator to work everyday.”
Lee laughed with me. “You're from New York City, New York. Born and raised there, until your parents decided they needed to be closer to a school for your brother, and moved to Salem, Massachusetts.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Very good. How old was I when I lost my virginity?”
“You were never innocent enough to have one.”
I burst out in laughter. “Wow, Lee, you really have been paying attention.”
He sniffed, as if affronted by my lack of trust. “Of course I have! I hang on your every word, darling, just like every gobsmacked male who's encountered you.” Lee grinned, leaning forward. “But now it's my turn to quiz you.”
Tossing back my hair, I merely smiled demurely. “Ask away, good sir, I think you'll find me an attentive pupil.”
“Why, Maggie, I thought we'd agreed not to proposition each other until the prank was done!”
The laughter bubbled up instantly. “This is why I like hanging out with you, Lee. I swear you're the yin to my yang.”
Reaching for my hand, Lee brought it to his lips once, then squeezed my fingers gently. “Well, we do have a common thread, and that's bound to make us allies in more ways than one. If I were to ask you how to get into the kitchens at night at Hogwarts, what would you do?”
I smiled. “Other than charm my way through? I suppose tickling the pear is an option, although I still maintain that's just a dirty metaphor you made up.”
Moving his chair a little closer to mine to block out the breeze that had just come up, Lee considered my comment. “Fair truth, that. Believe me, me and the lads had quite a bit of a laugh over that. Would you consider your mates' birthday a scheduled day off each year, or merely something to pencil in?”
It was my turn to look affronted. “I've never worked a day when it comes to my mates' birthdays. Their needs always come first.”
Lee shook his head. “Merlin, it's so sexy when you put it that way.”
I offered him a sip of the hot chocolate, and he accepted, sighing heavily. “What's that on your mind, Lee?”
He gaze slid back to my face as he returned my cup, watching me thoughtfully. “I can't figure out something about you, ducks.”
“What's that?”
For a long moment, he studied me, and my curiosity grew. At last, he spoke again. “What are you going to do with Gred and Forge once our prank is complete? This is taking a serious amount of effort, and you've as much told me you don't stay with a bloke for long.” He paused, and I felt myself go still. “Are you planning on staying with them for twice as long because there's two?”
His words made me immediately uncomfortable, and I wanted to ignore them. Still, it was a fair question. He was their friend, and I was the girl in the situation. Lee liked me quite a bit, but I was never doubtful as to where his root-deep loyalty lay.
“Questioning my motives, Lee?”
Lee shrugged once, smiling to soften the atmosphere. “Nah, I know your motives, Maggie. Just curious as to how many pints I'll be buying if I've got both those tossers using my shoulders as kerchiefs.”
I met his gaze without falter, and took my time in answering. “Lee, I don't make promises I can't keep. I don't put timelines on things that run on their own schedule. And I don't set out to break hearts. I stay for the fun, and when the fun's up I make my way to the door. Sometimes that's a couple of hours worth, sometimes it's more. Fred and George know that.”
“Sure, sure.”
Wrapping an arm around his shoulders, I said, “If you're so worried about them, then you wouldn't have agreed to help.”
Lee wrapped an arm around me in return, scrunching me close. “It's not them I'm worried about. It's the size of the hole in my purse once I've bought the drinks.”
Chuckling, I leaned in to rest my head on his shoulder. Lee, as I had come to know and love, harbored no ill will to me, and he wasn't serious about his inquiries. He liked to throw me for a loop every now and again, and it reminded me of someone I knew. Or maybe a couple of someones.
“You may be doing that anyway once they realize what's been pulled over them,” I grinned, my mind speeding ahead to watch the prank in my mind's eye.
“Without a doubt.”
