Chapter 24
Dust specks floated through the few sunbeams that managed to fight their way through the dingy windowpanes and tattered curtains. Harry watched their dance through drowsy eyes, smiling for no apparent reason at all. He was warm all over and he was curled up in his mate's arms. His day couldn't get any more perfect than it was right at this very second. He was warm and last night had been the most amazing night of his life. His mark felt... right. It was comfortable, like an old shirt that fit just right. He hoped that his mate felt the same.
As he edged toward fully awake, Harry glanced around the room for the first time. He hadn't really cared much last night, but now, he found that he was curious. He only had a vague idea of where they were, and what he could see was limited. He didn't want to move too much, just in case Snape was a light sleeper. So he contented himself with peering around what he could see of the room.
Behind him, Snape lay awake, watching the back of Harry's head. The boy had not moved yet, and was probably still asleep, and Severus didn't want to wake him yet. Worry gnawed at the back of his mind. He wanted to talk to the boy, no, the young man. After last night, he had no right calling Harry anything resembling a child. Dear Merlin, what have I done? He is still a student, but I... What if he doesn't want to ever speak to me again? I wouldn't blame him in the slightest. I'm his teacher, he's supposed to be able to trust me. He opened his mouth to say something and the part of his heart that was afraid of being hurt stopped him. I'll wait until he wakes up on his own. Maybe then I'll be ready to have this conversation.
At least Harry had stayed. He could have run away. He was old enough to apparate, so it wasn't like he was trapped here in this house, or even this bed. Snape found his arms tightening and forced himself to relax. He didn't want to accidentally wake his boy. Assuming he still wants to stay with me, after what I did... He held his breath, hoping that the teen would remain asleep, but apparently, he had felt the change in the older man's grasp because he rolled over to face him. Snape's breath caught in his throat and he swallowed angrily.
“Good morning, Sev'rus,” Harry whispered softly, his voice thick with emotions he was fighting to control.
“Good morning, Mr. Potter,” Snape replied, trying for distance, just in case Harry had been waiting for morning to leave him.
“So, now we're back to formal?” Harry asked. “After last night? I didn't think it was that bad...”
Snape looked down at him, shocked at the tears he heard in his mate's voice. He couldn't think of Harry in any other way, now that they had come together so perfectly. “I... There was absolutely nothing wrong with last night. Everything was... There was nothing wrong with last night.”
“Then why are we back to formal?” Harry whispered. “I'm sorry, I just don't understand. If everything was fine last night, why are we back to formal?”
“I'm sorry, Harry. That is not what I meant,” Snape backpedaled quickly. The last thing he wanted was to hurt Harry.
“What did you mean then?”
“Can we just start this morning again, please?” Snape asked, unable to find a suitable response to Harry's question. Before the younger man could say anything, Snape leaned down and kissed him deeply, warmth stirring deep in his groin. He pulled his suddenly very forgiving and very willing partner close to his body and ran his hands down his bare sides. Harry moaned into his mouth and started grinding against him. “Good morning, pet.”
“Good morning, Sev'rus...” Harry gasped.
“How did you sleep?”
“Best I've had in a while. How about you?”
“Surprisingly, yes. I slept very well,” Snape replied with another light kiss. Harry kissed back, giving wings to his heart. The niggling doubt started pulling at his mind again. He was sleeping with one of his students, the most famous of his patients even, and Dumbledore knew about it. How on earth would he be able to go back to work after this? How could he continue to see Harry in class every day, knowing what he looked like naked, knowing what he sounded like during sex, during climax?
“Severus? Where are you?” Harry's soft voice brought him back to the present and the fact that he had stopped kissing the boy.
“What do you mean, where am I? Have you been stricken blind suddenly?”
“No, I can see just fine. But, you were here and kissing me, and then your brain went somewhere else and it suddenly felt like you didn't want to even touch me anymore. I just wanted to know where you went. Was it something I did?” Harry asked softly. His eyes were open and earnest, like he honestly wanted to know.
“Harry, you realize that we have some things to consider now. Things like you being my student, and I being your teacher. Things like you being underage an-” his list was cut short by a soft fingertip against his lips.
“Things like you being a Deatheater, at least in name, and having to report to my mortal enemy on a regular basis. Things like this incredibly illegal dark magic bond. Yeah, I know. But, can you honestly tell me that the bond doesn't feel like it fits better now? Like maybe... Merlin's beard, Sev'rus, please don't just say that it can't work because there are so many marks against us. Please” Harry begged quietly. Snape stopped breathing for a second. Harry was fighting for him. Harry was fighting for them.
“Harry... I didn't say that I wanted this to end. I just wanted to make sure that you understood that this was not going to be easy. I wanted to make sure that you wanted this...” Snape said. His heart was breaking at the pleading in his mate's voice. He reached up and brushed some hair out of Harry's face. “And I can see now that you do. I am sorry.”
“He really hurt you, didn't he? Alexander, I mean,” Harry whispered. Snape stiffened a bit. He rolled away and sat up on the edge of the bed with his back to Harry, who regretted opening his mouth immediately.
“I will thank you not to mention him ever again, Mr. Potter,” Snape said, his voice tight. Harry nodded, even though he knew that his lover couldn't see him from where he was sitting.
“I promise. I'm sorry, Severus... I didn't mean-”
“Enough. I'm going to see about breakfast. You should rest.” Snape got to his feet and grabbed a robe from the back of a nearby chair. He walked out of the room without looking back at the bed. He pulled the door closed behind him, so he didn't hear to quiet beginnings of Harry's tears.
