He wiped her tears away, flashing her a look of concern as she struggled for the words to speak.
“What’s wrong?” asked Draco, worried. “What happened to you?”
Astoria took in a shaky breath, saying nothing. Instead she held out her left forearm, exposing the source to her distress. Etched deep into her skin was a mark – the Dark Mark, they called it.
The young man glanced at it for only a second before pulling her into a tight hug. He stroked the back of her head, soothing her as she sobbed into the fabric of his designer cloak. She thought to stop, to turn away and go home, but somehow Astoria found herself at his doorstep the moment her initiation was over. He offered her comfort that no amount of junk food or angst-ridden music ever could. Yes, they had only shared that moment at the Ministry Ball and a cute little dinner date in central London, but she felt close to him.
“This is the last straw,” he told her. “I won’t put up with it anymore. None of us should.”
“What do you m – mean?”
Draco pulled away, wiping the remainder of her tears. “We need to stop this.”
“Stop what?”
“Him,” he said defiantly. “We need to stop Voldemort.”
She stared at the handsome Pureblood blankly. “We can’t. Our only hope in doing that died at the Battle of Hogwarts.”
“That’s not true,” Draco countered. “Harry Potter died at the Battle of Hogwarts, yes, but we still have one thing left.”
“And what’s that?”
He took several moments to respond. “I read about it a few weeks back in my father’s study, in a book filled with all sorts of Dark Magic,” explained Draco. “It’s old magic, before Merlin’s time, and it’s called the Occidius Curse.”
Astoria narrowed her eyes. “I’ve heard of that.”
“I know. We all have. It’s said to be the product of lore and madness, a figment of the imagination – but some say it exists.”
“What does it do?”
“It drains your magic,” he answered quietly. “The fourth Unforgivable Curse – so lethal, it hasn’t been written about in over two thousand years.”
She blinked hard. “And you think we can use the Occidius Curse to take down Voldemort? If that’s so, why hasn’t anyone used it already? I’m sure Dumbledore knew about it.”
“I’m sure he did as well,” agreed the young man. “But Dumbledore had Gryffindor blood. He would never resort to an Unforgivable Curse. He put all his cards in Harry Potter’s basket.” Draco gave her a knowing look. “We tried the Gryffindor way once.”
Astoria nodded. “Now it’s time for Slytherin.”
He gave her a look that said it all. “I’m going to promise you something.” The young wizard held their hands together, lacing his fingers with hers. “I will find a way out of this,” he said carefully. “I will make sure you never have to do what I’ve done.”
“What have you done?” she asked, testing her limits.
Draco looked her dead in the eye, as though he were contemplating whether or not a response was necessary. “I’ve killed.”
And that was all she needed to hear. The pain in his voice was evident. She wouldn’t press him for more. Not then, anyway. “How will we do it? How does the Occidius Curse work?”
“I’m not quite sure, but I know it involves more than one caster,” he explained. “Of all three blood types, if I’m not mistaken.”
“Pureblood, half-blood and Muggle-born.”
Draco nodded. “I already have two blood types covered.”
“Pureblood and…?”
“Half-blood,” he finished. “Which leaves one more.”
Astoria connected the dots. “Muggle-born,” she concluded. “But what sort of Muggle-born would be strong and skillful enough to cast an Unforgivable Curse at the Dark Lord?”
“Leave that to me.”
It felt as though a tidal wave of information swept over them as they sat in the tent, regaling their separate tales. Astoria informed Sasuke of the conversation she had with Draco many moons ago and he informed her of a horcrux nobody knew to exist.
“It’s impossible,” she said, shaking her head. “Your way won’t work. There’s not a chance in the world Harry Potter left a horcrux. It goes against everything those Gryffindors preach.”
“It does,” he agreed, keeping calm. “But he was also a seventeen-year-old boy with minimal skill and little hope to defeat the Dark Lord. It’s perfectly plausible for him to have left behind part of his soul in case things didn’t go his way.”
Astoria crossed her arms. “Fine. Say he does have a horcrux. How do you propose we find it?” she challenged. “And also, those things contaminate your soul. Even if we do bring him to life, he won’t be the same.”
“This is true,” he agreed again. “But don’t you think it’s worth a try? I know it sounds ludicrous but so does the Occidius Curse. Did Draco ever show you the book he was talking about?”
She shook her head, feeling slightly stupid. “He didn’t.”
“Well, unlike him, I have something to back my plan.” Sasuke held out a small key, smaller than any she had ever seen. “This is the key to a journal,” he said. “A journal that once belonged to Harry Potter’s mother, Lily Evans.”
“So?”
“Our Chosen One found this journal during his travels to Godric’s Hollow. He kept it, up until his final breath, and when his and the Dark Lord’s wands connected to form Priori Incantatem, they were both sent into a parallel world, an in-between of sorts,” explained Sasuke. “Voldemort found his way out, but Harry remained there. Part of his soul died with his body, and part of it is still in that parallel world.”
“How do you know this?”
“Because I was there,” he said. “I was there in the Forbidden Forest that night. I saw it happen.”
“You saw him die, yes, but how do you know he’s stuck in the twilight zone or whatever it’s called?”
Sasuke ignored her juvenile behavior. “My people practice a different sort of magic. My family in particular have practiced clairvoyance for many a century.”
“You can see things others can’t.”
“Exactly,” he nodded. “And once I took hold of that journal, I could feel it, coursing through my fingers and into my own soul. I knew it was him.”
“How do we do it?”
“I have already contacted his soul using my own practices,” he informed her. “All that’s left is to find a –”
“ – Sacrifice,” finished Astoria. “But who?”
He gave her a steady look, determined in every sense of the word.
Suddenly Astoria understood. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “No, no, no!” She ran to him, slamming her fists against his chest and shocking even herself as tears began to stream down her face. He took the first few blows, holding her down for the others, against the wall. “I won’t let you do it,” she cried, face covered in tears. “You can’t.”
“It’s not your choice,” he told her carefully. “In fact, the choice isn’t even mine.”
“What?”
Sasuke let go of her. “I gave the journal to Hermione Granger. Like you said, the risk of waking a contaminated soul is too great to go unnoticed. I figured the choice is best left to someone who was close to the Chosen One, someone who would know what he would have done in a situation like this.”
Astoria wiped her tears away. “And if she decides to use it?”
“I’ll sacrifice myself.”
She turned away as more tears began to fall. “This isn’t what I signed up for,” the young woman argued. “I didn’t agree to kill off more innocent people. We started an uprising to put an end to this madness.”
“Nobody said I was innocent.”
Astoria faced him, staring between his eyes with conviction. “You would really do it,” she said, sounding utterly disgusted. “You would offer yourself up like some sort of lamb and let them kill you.” The witch tried to steady her breathing. “How can you be so content with dying when you have yet to truly live?”
“I don’t understand. I’ve lived honorably for twenty-four years.”
“That’s not what I meant,” she said, stepping away from the wall and into his personal space. “And you know it.”
Sasuke swallowed hard.
“Draco told me everything. I know your secret,” she said. “I know you knew of me before. I know it all.”
“You don’t,” he said confidently, staring off in the distance. “Even I didn’t know it all until I saw you again.”
Astoria exhaled. “Why can’t you just give in?” she asked, feeling stupidly desperate. “Are you ashamed of me? Is that it? Am I not pure enough for your affection?”
“Pure?” he repeated, finding her eyes. “That has nothing to do with it. I swore an oath to the Japanese division of the uprising, an oath that forbids marriage and any sort of…sexual acts. You know that. You knew that coming into this.”
The young woman digested the information, giving him a slow nod. “I did know it,” she admitted, stepping even closer and keeping her eyes on him the entire time. “But pardon me when I say fuck your oath and fuck your honour.” Astoria pushed him onto the floor; watching as he fell backwards and positioning herself on top of him, in straddle position. “But first and foremost, fuck me.”
Before he could do anything to stop it, she crashed her lips against his in a kiss she had only every dreamt of. Everything with Draco disappeared into the background, shrinking in importance until it was down to nothing. All that mattered was the young man below her, the one that started to kiss her back.
Author's Note: I know some of you are frustrated with Astoria and Sasuke's role in this fic, but please have faith. This is 100% Dramione. We know Hermione's history with Ron. I just thought it would be interesting to shed some light on Draco's relationship history. As for the Astoria/Sasuke elements, well, I guess that's just something I added for me and for anyone else who finds it interesting. They're important characters to the plot and without them, Draco and Hermione will never reunite. So, please, be patient and keep reading. Thank you for staying loyal :)
