Draco’s stomach growled so loudly it woke Hermione up. He sighed and held her closer. At least if she put pressure on his stomach, it didn’t hurt so badly. He tried casting a tempus but the room refused to allow it, just like it had for the bluebell flame and any cleansing charms that weren’t specifically for to loo related activities. They could only conjure a trickle of water with their fingers, enough for a few mouthfuls at a time. There was no food and not even Dobby could be summoned. It seemed hopeless.
“Why?” Hermione whispered for the hundredth time.
“Maybe it’s trying to show us.”
“Show us what? That every strong love is doomed?”
The room shifted again, interrupting their candid discussion. It looked much more modern now, though there were still torches and candles. Some things really never changed. This room contained a desk as well as a small pallet of blankets on the floor and a picnic lunch. It made their stomachs ache.
“Oh Jules!” A pretty young woman cried as she walked into the room. “It is lovely.”
“I am glad you like it Cassandra,” the young man behind her said with a thick French accent.
“Jules?” Hermione asked incredulously. “As in Jules Verne?”
“You’ll love the other person,” Draco said in amusement. “Cassandra Vablatsky.”
“Oh no, not that woman who wrote Unfogging the Future!”
“That’s the one. I recognize her face from the back cover. It’s rumored that she’s Trelawney’s ancestor.”
They watched quietly as the couple ate and laughed and discussed their classes. They lay down on the blankets and kissed chastely. It made Hermione smile softly and Draco burn with envy. Jules was waxing poetic about Divination when Cassandra turned up her nose.
“Oh Jules, that old hag could not see her way out of a room full of windows.”
“So you are a seer now?”
Cassandra turned beet red. “N-no.”
Jules quirked an eyebrow. “You seem rather uncertain? Been having visions of the future have we?”
Cassandra paled and turned away. The suddenness of the movement alarmed Jules and made Hermione and Draco’s stomachs churn. This was yet another set of star-crossed lovers. They knew it. Cassandra apparently knew it too because she refused to look Jules in the eye when he questioned her again.
“Are you truly seeing things?” Jules asked softly.
Cassandra nodded her head. “I am afraid I have but I do not wish for anyone to know Jules. Please! They will treat me as a spectacle.”
“They will respect you as a gifted witch,” Jules corrected.
“It is a curse!” Cassandra cried.
“Why do you say this?”
“Because I have seen things…things I have no desire to see.”
“Would you please tell me these things?”
Cassandra turned away, curling in on herself. “Oh Jules, I have seen the end of us.”
“Nonsense. I am to marry you as soon as we are through here.”
“No…you will not,” Cassandra whispered. “I have seen this. Something terrible will happen and we will be forever separated.”
“This is not regarding that senseless purity of blood movement is it?”
“It is,” Cassandra said quietly. “I have seen it. The movement will cause a great war, one that a marked boy will have to fight. The world will change my love, but not this in this era. My own great-great-granddaughter shall prophesize it.”
“You mean ours.”
Cassandra’s eyes filled with tears as she shook her head. “No Jules.”
“Whose then?” Jules growled.
“Trelawney.”
“NO!” Jules yelled. “I will not stand by and allow him to gain your affections. You are my betrothed!”
“And he is my father’s apprentice. It is expected of us to marry.”
“Expected,” Jules sniffed. “And you will go along with it.”
“No,” Cassandra said softly. “I will not. He will never gain my affections.”
“So why tell me this? Are you trying to drive me away? Do you not love me any longer?”
“I love you with all of my heart Jules. That is why I am warning you. Trelawney will want a duel and he is well versed in the Dark Arts. Your refusal to use them will be your downfall. Should he challenge you, you will lose much more than me.”
“And you would take up with him.”
“I would be bound to him against my will,” Cassandra said in a strangled voice.
“Then run away with me,” Jules whispered. “We can go to France, start over.”
“I have seen it,” Cassandra said with a small smile. “We would be happy for a time with children and a little cottage of our own.” Her face fell into anguish.
“What is it?”
“They will find us, a blood spell I believe. There would be nowhere to hide. We could move to the ends of the earth and never run far enough.”
“I am not going to let you go easily Cassandra.”
She smiled. “I know. Let me tell you of the wonders I have seen. Hold me for the rest of this year Jules, create happy moments with me. Then you will see what we are up against my love…and we will see.”
They blinked out as Jules reached down to kiss her. Hermione swiped the tears from her face. That had been her and Draco not too long ago, though they were nowhere near as much in love as Jules and Cassandra. She never took much stock in Divination but she knew from the book that Cassandra was a powerful and well respected seer. She didn’t flaunt it like Sybil Trelawney. In fact, she seemed to hate it.
“She knew they weren’t going to make it,” Draco said quietly. “She knew it.”
“And she stayed as long as she could anyway,” Hermione whispered, saying what he didn’t. “I wonder if she told him her visions, if she is where he got all of his stories from.”
“She certainly was the inspiration for them,” Draco said with conviction. “I always wondered why he left the wizarding world. The duel must have happened very quietly.”
“Or ended with a threat against Cassandra. That was the only way he was going to let her go.”
Draco nodded. “Yes, I could see that as a motivator. It’s such a shame. They seemed so in love.”
“They did,” Hermione said. “You realize that apart, all of these couples went on to do great things. Well, maybe not Slytherin, but the others most definitely.”
“I do,” Draco said. “But if they did all of that apart, what could they have accomplished together?”
“I know what the room wants now,” Hermione said. “But it doesn’t realize that the world hasn’t changed that much yet.”
“Maybe it doesn’t,” Draco muttered. “Or maybe it’s an eternal Gryffindor and hopes that it can.”
Hermione sighed, snuggling into his arms again. “Perhaps my Gryffindor outlook is just tarnished with the horrors of war, but I’m not sure I hold the same hope.”
“That truly is a shame then,” Draco sighed. “Insufferable lot as you brash Gryffindor’s are, it’s never good to lose hope.”
AN: So for this couple, I sort of... ignored the dates. There is about 50 years in between these two (from what I can tell anyway) but we're going to pretend they co-existed. Any guesses as to what the room will throw next? As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. Snow storms pass quicker when you are reading them. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
