Chapter 24

Looking between the three adults across from him, Draco didn't know what to say or think at this point. He was—well, this was blindsiding. So much he assumed or thought on so many topics was wrong if what he was just told was accurate. Shaking his head, he asked, voice uneven, “You've been friends and, in father's case, lovers since school? Well, other than Severus.”
“Yes,” Narcissa told him with a smile. “We had appearances to keep up, Draco. That's all it was. James, Sirius and Remus, but especially the first two, did everything they could to protect your father when it came to the first war. And your father did the same for them. Information was passed both ways so everyone could protect themselves. Sirius and James made sure that Lucius knew when raids were coming or where not to go as the Aurors were doing a sweep. If he hadn't known, he could have been in real trouble. And Lucius passed information to them to get some very dangerous people in custody.”“Even in school it was that way,” Lucius assured his son, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, hands clasped. “I guarantee you that Sirius wasn't about to let anything happen to your mother. If someone picked on Narcissa, he and James handled it in such a way that it was a lesson no one was apt to forget.”“I always thought that was you,” Severus said, looking at his old friend as he remembered some of what was done to those that messed with Narcissa.Smirking, Lucius explained, “No, it wasn't. Those two, plus Remus, were far better suited for handling such matters. Especially when it came to Bella. Their 'creativity' in what they did was far better at driving the point home than anything I could have managed. We just let everyone think it was me because of my reputation and how it would help certain matters. I was the instigator, though, for many things. What they didn't see and had no way of knowing about, I passed along. That or when I thought a lesson needed driven home. Bella—that one was obvious. It was best to let someone not in our house handle her. Whenever they were done, people definitely quit the shenanigans, that's for certain.”Shaking his head, taking that in, Draco said, tone uneven, “I thought that Sirius was the black sheep of the Black family because of him siding the wrong way.”“They may have thought that way, but I adore my cousin,” Narcissa told her son gently. “Sirius isn't like the rest, something that was always wonderful. We just had to let everyone think I toed that line.” Softening her tone, she said, “How could I not like someone that has always adored your father and was my protector? That's what he's like, Draco. Not what everyone has always fed you. He's a joker, no one will tell you otherwise, but he is wonderful. I've been over to see him many times since he escaped. Including in the last week.”Rubbing a trembling hand through his hair, messing it up, Draco was still trying to process all he had been told. Swallowing thickly, he glanced between the other three, he didn't know what to say or ask, honestly. And he wasn't even sure he heard some of it right as it made no sense to him. After a couple of moments, he asked, “Potter is involved in this? As in your lover as well, father? When did that start? I mean—Merlin, he's my age!”“Yes,” Lucius said softly. “That didn't start until the beginning of this summer, I assure you. Lover—let's say not that yet, but it's going there. That's all the details I'm willing to give on that end of the issue.” Glancing at Severus, he added, “What you've seen with Harry and Severus is just what it is, Draco. Harry's made it very clear that he has no interest in Severus beyond what we've told you. That's why Severus is becoming something akin to a guardian to him, because that is the type of relationship it is. Not the kind you have with Severus.”“Earlier today, before I came over here, Harry bluntly stated that I'm not his type,” Severus told Draco. “He's made that clear to everyone involved in this. It's always just been a case of him being someone I look out for, nothing more. That's all it's going to continue to be as well. I was chosen for the position that's coming because Harry trusts me.” Lowering his voice, he added, “And when it comes to the relationship with your father, keep in mind that I'm only one year younger than he is, so it's not that odd. Black is the same age as I am. So, if you wish to grouse about that, it would be the same as grousing about us.”“I never thought of it that way,” Draco sighed with a shake of his head. “Merlin, this is strange.”“We've tried to keep you out of so much of this to protect you. None of us wanted you drawn into this mess, son,” Lucius told him. “We're to the point, though, that you have to know not only to protect yourself, but to not make matters worse. What is coming with the Dark Lord is bad. Very bad. He's far more unhinged than he was in the last war. None of us want you drawn into that. Harry—Draco, he's not what he seems or what people perceive. I can plainly tell you he loathes Albus Dumbledore and has every reason in the world to feel that way. He's a young man your age that has been manipulated, used and many other things all his life. What you thought you saw of him is wrong. I can easily tell you that. As can your mother and Severus. He is like many of us that have to show one thing to the world to protect themselves, but what is beneath is different.”Nodding, Draco processed that, not sure what to say.“We need the rivalry to stop, Draco. Not only because it affects the dynamics of several relationships, but because we may need help protecting you,” Severus told him. “Before you say it, Harry's been talked to as well. His opinion is the same it's always been; as long as he's left alone and no one starts anything with him, he's going to be fine with it. I'm not saying best friends with you, obviously, but you won't get any issues from his direction. Which means we need it to stop on your end. There's nothing to be jealous over. Harry will never have a relationship with me like yours. He's not getting favoritism in what's coming. That's coming about because it's warranted. We also need you to understand and accept this because if something happens, Black has agreed to allow you to go stay there so he can protect you until it either blows over or we can find somewhere better to put you so you stay safe. To manage that, we can't have some of this continue. You know us, Draco; we would never put you somewhere you weren't safe or with people we didn't trust. To manage this, we can't have all-out war breaking out between you and Harry over issues that shouldn't be such.”“Understood,” Draco nodded. Glancing between them again, he asked, brow furrowed, “You said where Black lives is the headquarters for the Order? If something happens, won't I be in danger there?”“Absolutely not,” Lucius told him with a firm shake of his head. “We made damned sure of that. Not only have your mother and I, both, been over there multiple times, Sirius has agreed to let you stay in his room, with a partition up for privacy of course. Four of us have fortified that room to the point that no one can get in unless Sirius or Harry let them in with their wand. Even then, that applies to only Severus, Remus and myself. Once we get this worked out and have your assurances that you won't do something foolish or try some kind of stunt, I'm going to have him add you and your mother to the wards so you can get in. All three of us can assure you that if Sirius says he'll protect you, he would defend you to the death. That's the kind of person he is. Though we haven't discussed it with Sirius and Remus, the three of us here have agreed that if Sirius needs somewhere to put Harry for a time, he's going to come to Malfoy Manor. This works both ways, Draco. We don't want Harry drawn into this nightmare nor do we want you in that position either. You both deserve to live your lives without having to concern yourselves with dealing with a madman. That we fully and completely plan to ensure doesn't happen. And, to do that, it means we're getting out when we can manage. The how with that is up for debate now as we have no idea what's coming with that or even the most basic of plans to do so.”Taking that in, Draco sighed. It was so much that he didn't know what to think. However, he said, “Understood.” Looking around, he asked, “Does this mean I have to deal with Granger and Weasley? Potter is friends with them. That I don't think I can handle.”“No,” Severus said with a smirk, leaning back and folding his arms over his chest. “Harry cut them loose this summer. I can safely say, without revealing any huge secrets, that they were never as close as Weasley and Granger thought they were. In fact, I know he was fed up with so much they pulled with him over the years. They finally piled the straw on that broke the camel's back this summer and he's done. The only two Weasleys he wants anything to do with are Fred and George. That's all.”“I always thought the three were very close. I mean—that's what everyone said,” Draco imparted, confused, brow furrowed.“I think that came from the end of the other two, not Harry. Harry is—well, he's a loner for the most part. He has friends, no doubt, but they aren't close. From what he has told me, he prefers it that way. In fact, he's told me, many times, he just wants everyone to leave him alone because he trusts almost no one.” Lowering his voice, he added, “Draco, I can count the number of people in this world Harry actually trusts on two hands. You father and I are two of them, though your father is still working on that end of the spectrum with him. Black and Lupin are two. There are Fred and George. Then Lovegood and Longbottom. That's all, Draco. Molly and Arthur Weasley are trying to work on that end and build the trust, but I'm not sure they can manage. Most that will attempt it with him will fail. He's not what you thought, that I promise.”“Merlin,” Draco muttered, shaking his head as he tried to sort through all this and meld it with what he thought he had seen over the years.“It's a lot to take in, we realize that,” Narcissa told her son soothingly. “And we're all going to admit that we should have talked to you before it came to this point. We just put it off, not wanting to force you to realize just what it's like. Now, well, we're to the point that we have to, Draco. So much is riding on this that we can't let it go on any longer.”“I'm glad you did,” Draco sighed. “At least I know the truth.”“We also want you to know that part of what's coming with Harry will hit the papers,” Severus told him. With a shake of his head, he added, “It shouldn't because of his age, but some of it will. Other parts are going to because there will be people prosecuted over bits of this mess. What we want you to do is if you have questions about what you read, ask us. We'll fill you in on the truth. As you know well, the Prophet isn't good at telling the truth anymore. We will. Though we may not give you all the details as some are very private and you don't need to know them, but we'll give you the basics so you understand.”Looking between the three again, Draco asked, “He's actually not going back to school, becoming emancipated and all that? Really?”“Really,” Lucius told him with a firm nod. “It's warranted, Draco. In fact, it's long overdue, some of it. We can all assure you this is not favoritism or him getting something because of who he is. It's something needed. In fact, it took a great deal of work on the end of many of us to get it to this point. Trust me when I say this is what's best for Harry, for many reasons.”“Your father and Severus, both, worked very hard to get Harry these things. Sirius and Remus had to as well. It's not being done for no reason,” Narcissa assured her son. “Though I don't know all the reasons behind it, I know enough to promise you that they came about because it's what's in Harry's best interests, not because he's getting special treatment.”“I assume it's huge because of so much,” Draco told them, brow furrowed. “I mean—those wards alone going. Then the emancipation and not going to school. That tells me something big happened.” With that, he was fishing for some kind of answers, though didn't expect them.“It's huge,” Severus assured him with a nod. “We won't go into the reasons why, just that it is. When bits come out, you'll figure parts. That and we'll explain. For now, just take our word for it that this is big and is needed.”Taking that in, Draco sighed. He wanted to know what was behind it, of course, just to know, but knew better than to push.“How about this—rather than keep asking questions, we allow you to see what kind of relationships there really are between us?” Narcissa asked her son, smiling.“I would like that, but how?” Draco asked, looking at his mother.“We have a way,” Severus told him with a smirk. Looking at Lucius, he nodded to him, a signal to go get the mirror. When Lucius left to retrieve it, he said, “Just take in what you see and go from there. All we ask.”“I can do that,” Draco assured him, though was bewildered.
Counting the dragons on the bed, Sirius nodded. An even dozen. Perfect. He thought that was plenty for them to work with. Looking over Harry's shoulder, he watched him apply the basic locomotor charm to one of them, something he had just taught him. From what he was seeing, Harry already had it down pat and it was fully functional. Good. “I think this will work fine,” he told Harry. “Let's get the locomotor charm on, then we'll start layering the rest that initially came on Elliot. That should give us a good base to work on.” At the moment, they were just doing busy work while waiting for Lucius to contact them. As what he planned wasn't strenuous or taxing, it was perfect and not something that would be bothered if they were interrupted.
Putting the dragon down on the bed, Harry grinned as it walked around.“I'll show you the modification on this one later as it's used to move objects around. Since you picked it up so fast, you shouldn't have a problem with that one either,” Sirius told him, slipping an arm around his waist and pulling him back against his chest, holding him there. He was about to press on and explain the differences when the signal from the mirror went off.Feeling Harry stiffen up, as they both knew what this was about, he gave him a reassuring squeeze then activated the mirror with his wand. Grinning as he could see the four sitting there, he asked, “And I assume all went fine?”“We're good, Sirius,” Lucius said with a nod as he took in the scene and the various dragons roaming on the bed as Harry worked with one. “And I see you're hard at work creating mischief.”“Of course,” Sirius chuckled. Looking at Cissy he said, “Cissy! How is my favorite broad in the whole world today?”Snickering at not only the look on Draco's face, but hearing him about choke, Harry shook his head while he applied the charm to another dragon.“I'm fine, Sirius,” Narcissa smiled, giving her blindsided son a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “I can see you're incorrigible as ever.”“Of course,” Sirius told her with a winning grin. “That never changes, you know that!”Letting out a long-suffering sigh, Narcissa shook her head, but smiled. Looking at Harry, she asked, “You're not letting him talk you into too much that will get you in trouble, are you, Harry?”“No, we're fine there, Narcissa,” Harry told her with a grin. “By the way—thanks to you and Lucius for the presents. They were great.”Seeing her husband nod while smirking, she replied, “We're glad you enjoyed them. We both though you could not only use them, but they would look good on you. They fit, I assume? Severus gave us the measurements for them and we made sure the right charms were in the boxes for that.”“Fit perfectly,” Sirius assured her. “And he looks great in them.” Snickering, he added, “And Ron about died of jealously over what he saw, you can trust me there.” Glaring at Lucius, he told him, “And, yes, I mentioned the broom. So, no thoughts of revenge over it!”“He did,” Severus assured Lucius, smirking. “And the look on Weasley's face was priceless. That you can trust me on!”“Good,” Lucius said, leaning back and looking smug.“Alright, before we go any further, there are a couple of things I need to pass along before I forget,” Sirius sighed, scratching his chin. Seeing nods, he continued, “First, Remus will be up here when he finishes filling out some paperwork. Snape?” Seeing the man look at him, he told him, “We need you to come back over later. You usually do, but there are a couple of chunks of paperwork we need you to sign. Also, check your home before you do. Remus got several things from Harry's solicitor about the upcoming hearing. That's what he's filling out now. We imagine you received the same thing. They are for after it's put in place, so this is telling us that it's a sure-fire bet it'll be approved.”“Understood,” Severus told him firmly with a nod. “What kind of paperwork, do you know?”“Nothing taxing,” Sirius told him honestly. “Mostly the normal stuff that comes with it. He's set it up to where you and Remus get a key to Harry's vaults and can sign for something if Harry can't. That we do need. Others are more along the lines of accepting responsibility for things like medical emergencies and such. I'm sure you know the drill with that. From what Remus' letter said, he just wants this all in place so he can present it at the hearing so everything is handled at once.”“I'll check then sign and come back over,” Severus assured him, pleased with this.Looking at his long-term lover, Sirius asked, “He's asking if you'd be willing to do what you do for me, Lucius. As you're involved and someone we all trust, he wants to not only give you a key to the vaults, but have you check over any investments. From what he said, most of what's there are stable areas, but he wants oversight so there's no question. As with my funds, your name won't come into it. The three of us thought that might work well as you may be able to get into things if this mess heads south like it did the last war. Besides, you know what the hell you're doing with that shite where we don't.” Glancing at Snape, he added, “I doubt even Snape does when it comes to that end.”“I don't,” Severus admitted with a shake of his head.“Shan't be a problem,” Lucius told him with a dismissive wave. “Have Harry sign what's needed then get Severus and Remus to witness it. Once you send it off, I'll get with Amos to set up something like we have with you. I'll take it from there.”Listening in, Draco's eyes were wide. The part with the money was enough to tell him there was definitely trust on all sides with this. Sputtering, he didn't know what to say.Hearing Draco, Sirius chuckled, “You'll get used to it, Draco. Nothing to worry about.” Nudging Harry, he asked, “Right, Harry? Harry was as blindsided as you were when he found out about me and Lucius. We won't even talk about how uptight he was when he met your mum.”“I was,” Harry admitted with a grin, sitting the last of the dragons down when he finished the charm.Shaking his head, Draco looked between his parents and Severus then to the two in the mirror. They were all completely relaxed with the situation. It was almost unfathomable to him. Not to mention that Potter and Black were, obviously, very close, what with how Black was holding onto Potter.“We were telling him how you and James used to get even with people for me when it came to Narcissa,” Lucius told Sirius smugly, an evil smirk on his face.Chuckling and grinning bigger, Sirius told him, “Bet your arse we did! No one picked on Cissy! I don't care who they were. That included batty Bella. They did, they dealt with us. And Merlin help them if we had to step in.”“Oh so very true,” Lucius said smugly. “It was rather enjoyable to watch many get their comeuppance for that.”“They were my knights in armor, though it was rather tarnished and banged up,” Narcissa admitted with a soft smile.“We were more fun than the ones in shiny armor,” Sirius laughed. “You loved it too, Cissy, admit it.”“Well, yes, I'll concede that,” Narcissa told him, smile growing. “It was rather like having a small army taking care of me.” Patting Draco again, she assured him, “It's just how we told you, Draco. You can see that for yourself.”“It's—strange,” Draco admitted, shaking his head, eyes locked on the mirror.“You'll get used to it,” Sirius shrugged, looking over the dragons then picking one up to check the charm. “Good. It's on right. Let's press on, Harry.” Grabbing the list, he checked the next charm they needed to apply. Not sure what to make of this, Draco asked, more to give him time to take it all in, “What are you doing with the dragons?”“We're trying to recreate the behavior of something Harry has,” Sirius told him. “What we're doing is layering the charms that were initially on it. Then we're going to add the ones we put on before pressing on to the ones your dad helped Harry with. After that—we're going to see what we can manage. It's our hope that two of the charms will do the most work, but we're not counting on it.” Looking at the mirror, he explained, “In the end, we want a stuffed dragon that acts similar to a real one, though is more like a pet than a dangerous creature. It's just going to take time to figure it out and get it there. Your dad came up with the idea of using it as a Charms assignment for Harry so we can put effort into it. Harry, Remus and I will be doing most of the work, though Snape is going to give us a hand as well as he's seen what we're shooting for.” Grinning, he added, “When we're done, we're going to sell the template and make a ruddy fortune!”“They will, I assure you,” Lucius said with an amused snort and nod.“If we get it done, we'll give you one so you'll be the first, well, besides Harry, to own it,” Sirius told him with a grin. “You'll love it, trust me! Ask Snape.”“You will,” Severus snorted, looking amused. “If they can pull this off, everyone is going to want one.”Pressing on, figuring that acting and talking normally would be the best way to go about this, Lucius asked Sirius, “When you get time—can you add Narcissa and Draco to the wards on your room? That way, if something happens, we don't have to scramble at the last minute to get things in place.”“Gotcha, will do,” Sirius told him with a firm nod as he walked Harry through how to do the next charm. “Remus and I will take care of that tonight.” Looking at the still shell-shocked Draco, he said, “You're safe here if you have to come. This room is better protected than a fortress. The same with the house. Nothing's going to happen to you and we won't do anything, I promise. Your mum would hurt me if we did. And she can be plenty evil when she wants to be, this I know well! She knows some of the most vile hexes ever invented. I don't want to be on the receiving end of them. Your dad and I have felt plenty when we irked her over the years. I don't want to feel worse!”“We have,” Lucius admitted with a snort, shaking his head.Looking at his mother, who had a slightly smug look on her face and was smiling, Draco let out a chuckle then said, “Understood.”“We're going to add Harry to the manor's wards as well. That way, if you need him out of there for some reason, he can come over here. My room is about as fortified as yours so he can easily stay in there until whatever happened blows over,” Lucius told him.“Never thought of that, but good plan! Go for it!” Sirius told him with a firm nod.“In the next week or so, as things settle on your end, we're going to bring you over for dinner,” Narcissa told her cousin. “It'll be late, of course, but we'll manage.”“Oh, nobby fare! Good! Haven't had that in a while,” Sirius grinned, nudging the chuckling Harry. “We'll manage, Cissy. Just give us plenty of notice before hand.”“He's always like this, Draco. You'll get used to it,” Lucius smirked, nudging his son. “He's not serious most times. When he has to be, he is. Other than that, he's fun to be around.”“I understand,” Draco said softly, watching them work. Curious, he asked, “Potter, is it true that you're done with the other two parts of the trio?”Knowing who Draco was talking about, Harry told him, firmly, “We're done. They want to be puppets and act like idiots, let them do it with someone else. I have too many other things to worry about that I don't want that crap added in.”Taking that in, he then asked, “And you're not going back this year?”“Nope,” Harry grinned as he worked with the new charm on one of the dragons. “I'm staying right here. Sirius, Severus and Remus will be my teachers, for the most part. Your dad is going to take on a couple of the classes, at least that's what they told me.” Looking up at the mirror, he said, “You're on your own there this year. Good luck with that!”Chuckling a little, Draco told him, dryly, “I think I'll manage.”Sirius was about to say something else when he let out a loud yelp. Head whipping around, he glared down over his shoulder and snarled, “Stop that, you evil little shite! No biting!”“You sure we shouldn't give him realistic teeth, Sirius? That could be funny,” Harry asked, snickering, knowing by now what was causing the reaction because Elliot had been in a 'mood' since they started working with the dragons.Looking at Harry, both eyebrows arched, Sirius told him, firmly, “No realistic teeth! He is not getting realistic teeth any more than he's getting real flames to belch! As often as he bites me, not to mention he chewed on my head last time you enlarged him, he does not need realistic teeth! And whatever his problem is today, it's making it worse than normal.”“He doesn't like the other dragons. I've told you that,” Harry said distractedly as he applied the charm to another one then set it down on the bed.“Harry, he has fluff for brains, literally. He cannot be jealous or territorial, either one. He's just being a rotten little shite, that's all,” Sirius told him, tone exasperated.“This didn't start until we duplicated the dragons. I swear, that's what it is,” Harry told him as he applied the charm to another one.Sirius was about to reply when Elliot bit him again, right on the arse. Let out a yelp then snarling, he told the dragon, “Knock it off! Whatever your problem is with me today needs to stop!” Looking at his now snickering godson, he sighed, “Do something with him, if you would! I'm tired of being bitten.”Grinning, Harry leaned forward then lifted the back of his shirt before saying, “Come here, Elliot.” Normally, he wouldn't do this and wanted Elliot to stay hidden. However, since they were recreating behavior in the other dragons, he was willing for him to be seen as most wouldn't know why he had Elliot. Feeling the stuffed dragon scoot up his back, he straightened up then went back to applying the charm.Confused, Draco looked at the mirror then around to those by him before asking, “What's going on?”“Elliot having issues with you today, Sirius?” Lucius asked, completely amused, crossing his arms over his chest.“More than normal,” Sirius sighed. “He hates all of us, I get that, but this is worse than it usually is. And I am not buying your theory on the charm applied to him to keep people from taking him. I swear, he hates everyone but Harry. Hell, he tried to eat Snape's wand and has bitten Remus. It's more than a charm, Lucius!”Confused, Draco shook his head. He knew Potter had an owl named Hedwig, everyone had seen her after all, but didn't know who Elliot might be. Finally, he asked, “Who, or what, is Elliot?”“It's the object they're trying to recreate with the dragons,” Severus explained with an amused snort. Trying to think how to word it, he finally imparted, knowing it wasn't something that would embarrass Harry, “It's a toy Harry has.”“What kind?” Draco asked, curious as to what kind might be a biting toy. Toys were odd things, something even he still had several of, such as a fanged Frisbee, so he didn't think it was something that a little child would play with. He wanted to know was all. Before any of them could answer, Elliot scooted further up Harry's back and stuck his head out the neck hole of Harry's shirt. Watching the stuffed dragons mill around on the bed, he let out a low growl. Sliding fully out of Harry's shirt, he perched on top of Harry's head and watched the dragons walk, wings outstretched and fluttering. Smoke curling from his nostrils, his eyes locked on the dragons. After a few moments of watching them mill around, he reared up on his hind legs, wings outstretched, let out a loud roar, head swaying as he did, then launched himself off Harry's head and dove towards the stuffed animal, belching fake flames as he did. Once close to the stuffed dragons, he tore into them, biting and snarling.Sitting there, eyes wide, Harry watched Elliot rip into the dragons, shredding them. Ducking as a ripped off wing flew at his face so it didn't hit him, he then picked up the dragon head that landed in his lap and looked at it before glancing back over his shoulder at Sirius.Watching Elliot annihilate the small herd of stuffed dragons, Sirius shook his head then glanced at Harry, both eyebrows up. Smoothing down his goatee, he went back to watching the stuffed dragon rip the others apart. “He has issues,” was all he was finally able to utter.“So, that's Elliot?” Narcissa asked, shoulders shaking as she tried not to laugh.“That's Elliot,” Severus nodded, rubbing a hand over his face as he watched the stuffed dragon mangle the others.Watching what was going on, Draco shook his head then said, “How did Potter get his hands on a real baby dragon?”“It's not real, Draco, it's stuffed. It's the same kind as those that it's 'killing',” Lucius told his son, snorting softly.Eyes wide, Draco looked at his father, then said, “That's a stuffed animal? It acts real!”
“We know. That's why they're trying to recreate it,” Lucius nodded, snorting a little louder at the stuffed dragon and what it was doing.
