Chapter 24
To say Draco was having a bad day was the understatement of the century. Well, it was more than one day, actually. Since the day before, his whole world had crashed down around his ears. Most of the money his family had was gone, either now in a trust that they couldn't touch or reverted back to its original place. Many of his prize possessions were gone, such as his Hand of Glory, because of how much they cost, when they were bought or were given to him by whom. And he wasn't sure what his father could do to right the mess.
Since then, they had been to Gringotts, a visit that only confirmed what they knew. His father had spent some time figuring out just what they had retained so they knew what they had to work with. Then to invest some in areas he knew would give them good, quick returns. It would help the situation they were in. As he had to be along because of the one vault that was now his, the insignificant amount contained in it something that made him want to grind his teeth, Draco had listened in. What he heard infuriated him and he was vowing revenge over it. The sum allocated to them to live on was paltry compared to what they were used to. By the time they were done, he was shaking from anger. Then, after that, his father was summoned. While he didn't know exactly what went on, he did know the shape he was in when he returned. Though Draco hadn't seen the after effects of torture curses first hand before, he knew enough to recognize some of them when his father finally showed back up. It appeared the Dark Lord was highly upset by what went on. More revenge was coming over what his father went through. After that, though he wasn't supposed to, he listened in to his parents talking. His suspicions about torture were confirmed. Then he overheard his father talk about having a mission for him, something the Dark Lord wanted him to take on. Though his father and mother didn't like the idea, he was more than willing to do whatever the Dark Lord wanted. He would be proud to take on whatever was, especially if it involved getting revenge on Potter for all of this nightmare. While Draco knew that Potter wasn't completely to blame, as he's not the one that set all this in motion, he held his share and he planned to ensure he felt it. He would let others take on Black and Lupin, but Potter was his. Since Potter had refused his handshake on that first train ride, he had wanted to make his life as miserable as possible and get revenge for the sting to his ego. Now matters had grown worse. It was one thing to turn down his friendship, but a whole other to pull all this out. And he was positive Potter had put the bug in Black's ear over some of it, helping to push it along further. He would pay for it if Draco had his way. With a sigh, Draco looked in the mirror after getting dressed. It was time for breakfast, of course, so he had to go downstairs. He just didn't want to as he wasn't sure how much more he would hear that would set him off, but he had to. Not only did he need to eat, as he sure wasn't used to missing meals, but they had an appointment with their Solicitor that morning. So, he needed to know what they were going to try for before they left so he was prepared. All he hoped was worse wasn't waiting on him when he went down. If there was, he wasn't all that certain what he would do or if he could control himself.
“There isn’t much wiggle room here, Lucius,” Bartan Singleworth told his client with a heavy sigh. “On the end coming from the House of Black, there is none at all. Sirius is well within his rights to do what he has done, as I'm sure you know. And there is nothing we can pull out that will stop him. The most we can do is go for a delay, but that won't help matters as the initial papers were filed and everything was locked down. From what I can tell, the only wiggle room we have is from the end relating to your father's will. And it's not much.”
Lucius was about to take any loophole he could get and run with it the best he could, so he asked, “What can we wiggle with?”“It has to do with the wording of your father's will,” Bartan told him, shuffling papers around to find the right one. When he did, he said, “The way it reads is that as long as you're married and have a legitimate heir, you get your inheritance. For once, Pureblood was not included. I'm sure that was just a standard oversight, but we can take it and go. What I see we can do is wait for the papers to all go through on Narcissa, something that won't take long, then you both get remarried. That will satisfy part. I'm sure another heir isn't in offing, but we might manage to negotiate something when it comes to Draco. If we can manage to get his bastard status revoked and only that, it will once more release the funds. It's about the best I can do, Lucius.”“If all we can manage is the release of the funds from my father's will, I'll be quite happy,” Lucius admitted, mind already working on how to manage. However, anything to do with Draco and his bastard status was going to be the fly in the ointment. With a sigh, he asked, “Were you able to start the most basic of any kind of feelers to Sirius? Anything at all? Or isn't Sirius willing to bend?” He hoped there was some bend, anything, because, if there wasn't, they were in a world of trouble. This nightmare had hit the front page of the Prophet that morning and those on the paper had run with it, pulling out every juicy detail they could to trot out there for all to see. They even proclaimed in a big, bold font about Draco being a bastard. It helped nothing and made everything all the worse with what he was dealing with. If that end wasn't enough, they also touted out information he didn't know; such as Sirius taking back over the seats on the Wizengamot. The Dark Lord would not like hearing that tidbit of news. As it was, with him having the most power on the panel, they could push plenty through. If Sirius did as was said in the papers and took over his seats then merged the houses of Black and Potter, that power would shift. No, not good at all.“I sent something off right after you contacted me yesterday. The reply I received is one that means Sirius is willing to negotiate. It's only on one matter and one matter only. That's all. And, with the way it was worded, he's not going to negotiate much. Stephen Bloode explained that the 'negotiation' is a take it or leave it matter. You either accept or it all plays out as it is.” Bartan told him with a sigh and shake of his head.“Did he give any clue what the one area he's willing to give on is?” Lucius asked, not sure what one it could be, though he hoped against hope that it had to do with Draco.“Draco's bastard status,” Bartan told him simply. “I should be getting the papers today which lay out the most basic of what Sirius wants. Once I do, I'll send for you then we'll go from there. As I said, it was made quite clear there is little to no negotiation on any of what he proposes and this is the only area he's even willing to give a little. Nothing else.” Eyes flitting to Narcissa, he sighed, “Narcissa's status is officially gone and, from the papers I saw, her and Bella's vaults are being reabsorbed by the House of Black. The goblins have to sort through communal property and anything else dealing with the monetary. There is no getting them back.”Lucius had assumed the part about Narcissa going in, so he wasn't overly stunned, but it was a disappointment. However, he was heartened by the part dealing with Draco. Good. If he could just get that part rescinded, they would be in better shape, far better. At least his part of the fortune would return. They needed that money, so he would agree to about anything. “Get the terms then let me know. We'll press on from there.”“I should have something this afternoon. My secretary will contact you when I do.” Then Bartan pressed on, adding, “It's also my understanding that we won't be dealing with Sirius himself. His Solicitor is the one that will be handling all of the negotiations with Sirius' approval. I don't assume that's a problem?”“None whatsoever,” Lucius assured him, actually giving a sigh of relief. Sirius was volatile enough that being locked in a room negotiating with him wouldn't end well and whatever he may try to work with would end up binned because he was bound to set Sirius off in some way. Going about negotiations without Sirius' involvement told him he might have a better chance of succeeding.“Now, let's go over some strategy. I'll push for what I can, Lucius, but I don't think we can do much. The most I can succeed with is tying this up for as long as I can. That might be the best advantage we have for getting even a tidbit of wiggle room.” Then he began to lay out the strategy he had for the negotiations. While Lucius was up for almost anything to help, all he really cared about was Draco's bastard status. If they could get that revoked, he wouldn't try for anything else. While he desperately needed Draco labeled legitimate for the monetary end, he loved his son and wanted it for that reason as well. So, he would push this.
Sirius couldn't help himself and grinned when he read through the paper. It was perfect. Though he really didn't like the Prophet, and how they went about reporting, what was laid out made him happy. Everything was out there for the whole world to see. All the juicy tidbits and just what he had done. Oh, it was bound to have repercussions, for plenty, but it was legal and in place. There wasn't a damned thing that anyone from the other side could do about it. Even if he, Remus and Harry were killed, those orders were in place and would go into effect. The other side of this mess could go off his nut all he wanted, the funding was gone. Forever if he had his way when it came to the biggest sources of it.
After tossing the paper aside, he pulled Harry close and kissed him on the temple. The two of them were still lounging in bed, though it was mid-morning. Remus would be back up shortly, once he sorted through the mail. Since all of them assumed there were plenty of bits in it they needed to tend to, read, whatever, he was taking care of it for them.Arm draping around Sirius, Harry looked at the paper, grinning just a little at the headline there. It screamed about how the House of Black was making waves. In his mind, waves was a minor way to describe what happened. More like tsunami. It was good, though, as it was out there for everyone to see. He thought that it would mean none of those involved could end up hiding what really happened. After curling up tighter to Sirius, he said, chuckling just a little, “Plenty can't be happy about any of this and it's going to make someone else go completely mental.”“I don't care and he is,” Sirius chuckled, giving him a squeeze. “We're out and protected, that's all that matters to me. Let everyone else take on that evil arse. It's their job, not ours. We have enough to worry about when it comes to all we're dealing with. I'm sure the other end of this nightmare will try to pull us in, at least in some way, but we'll get by.”“We will,” Harry nodded. Then he looked up as the door opened. As expected, it was Remus. And he was carrying a bunch of mail.Though he was nice and comfortable, Harry sat up when Sirius did, waiting to see what was headed their way with this mess. He was sure that's what all of it was about in some way or another. After giving both of them a kiss, Remus flopped on the bed by Sirius and crossed his legs. Once he quickly sorted through what he had in his hands, putting the most important first, he told them, “We have several bits here that you have to tend to, Sirius. I left everything downstairs that either I’ll handle or it's just not important.”“I figured I'd have a shite-load,” Sirius admitted. “All right, what do you have for me?”“Let's start with the one that's going to factor into the others,” Remus told him, unfolding the one on the top and handing it over for Sirius to read. “It's from Rufus.” As Sirius began reading, he explained, “He wants a couple bits from you to push what he needs. They aren't anything overly trying and will play right into what you're going to push for with Lucius.” A glance told him that Harry was looking at him for an explanation, so he pressed on, “He's looking for an excuse to arrest Draco. My opinion, from what we know of him, is it won't take one. Draco is going to walk right into whatever Rufus wants because I don't see him not running his mouth. If he manages, Rufus wants to know if Sirius will add the caveat that Lucius not only has to stop funding You-Know-Who, but give up information on that side, everything he has, to get his son out of trouble.”“Yeah, Draco is going to walk right into the plan,” Harry muttered, grinning just a little.“He will,” Sirius agreed with a nod, tone distracted as he kept reading. “Is that about the gist of the whole thing?” He then asked, not wanting to plow through all of it if he didn't have to.“Pretty much,” Remus assured him. “Just read the parts with the highlights. That gives you most everything you need to know. If you don't have a problem with any of what he proposes, I'll send it on to our Solicitors and let them take it from there.”Once he found where Rufus highlighted, Sirius quickly read through it then nodded. “Nothing here I have a problem with.” When he finished reading, he tossed it to Remus and told him, “Send it off and tell them I approve using those parts. It shouldn't be too big of a deal for them to work in to what else is there.”“I'll handle it with other bits I have to send off,” Remus smiled, setting it aside. “The rest are from your Solicitors. Lucius has already put out feelers about what is negotiable.”At that, Sirius grinned evilly and took them. They were a quick enough read through that he plowed through them rapidly. “They're handling it just how I want them to, so no problem. They're also making it clear that I won't be there for the negotiations. I'm damned sure that Lucius thinks it'll be easier without me around. He's plenty wrong there. They aren't going to give any at all, on any of it. Period. He will either give me what I want, or Draco remains a bastard. It's that simple.”“I'm sure Lucius will give up about anything to get Draco back his status and the fortune that comes with it.” Remus told him with a smile, taking the papers back and setting them aside with the others.“My guess as well,” Sirius told him, holding Harry close, rubbing his back. “Anything else we really need to worry about?”“Nothing pressing, no,” Remus told him, relaxing himself. “Everyone, including Albus, sent along what they've done to prepare. It's more so we're aware than a need to know issue. I'll read through what is there and fill you in. It's just not something that matters much, though the information may come in handy at some point.”“You do that,” Sirius told him with a nod. “This afternoon. Just get off what we need for the Solicitors then we're going to sit outside for a while and just relax. It's a nice enough day that we'll enjoy it. Besides, it's the first full day in the new house. We need to explore, discuss whatever for bits we have to get and plenty of other areas. No need to stress ourselves out with this mess when we don't need to.”“A wonderful plan, Sirius,” Remus agreed, looking forward to just relaxing in a way they hadn't for a while.
As they walked down Diagon Alley after finishing with the Solicitor's meeting, Draco was glaring at everyone that dared look in their direction. Unlike most times when you thought everyone was staring at you and gossiping, this time they really were. Most of the fools didn't try to even hide that's what they were doing, staring openly while cupping a hand over their mouths and leaning in close to the person next to them. Most were even holding a copy of that damned paper while they did.
He was normally able to ignore much of what was going on or looks and whispers, putting on a stoic front like his parents, but he couldn’t this time, though. How overt people were, combined with what he had heard over the last two days made it to where it wasn't possible. It was a battle to even keep his temper in check and refrain from whipping his wand out then starting to throw spells. As his father stopped to talk with a couple business associates of his, Draco kept glancing around. Like since they came out of the offices, there were plenty gravitating close and gossiping. While he could only imagine what they were saying, he really didn't want to know. Instead, he tried glaring and staring them down. It didn't work, though. Rather than backing away or going about their business, they just seemed to get a knowing look on their faces and went right back to it. That—it was beyond infuriating. When he normally had to deal with stressful situations, he found someone to take his temper out on. As that was usually an occurrence at school, there was never a shortage of those he could use for such cathartic endeavors. He wasn’t, though, and he had to be careful anyway, what with everything going on. Then a situation presented itself that he couldn't resist. He watched part of the Weasley clan, with Molly leading, and Granger come close by. He wasn't sure why they were in the Alley or who the two with them were, but he couldn't fight off the normal impulses, especially after what he thought were knowing looks tossed in his direction. After gritting his teeth, he gave a glance to his parents. They were busy talking to—he couldn't remember their names, just that his father did business with him. Eyes narrowing, he started to shift in the other direction, moving towards where the big brood was standing. This would definitely help his temper. He just had to make sure he wasn't caught.
As she pretended to talk to Molly like they were gossiping or something, Tonks, dressed like an old woman, leaning on a cane, was keeping close watch on all the goings on in the Alley. For the most part, it wasn't anything to worry about. Then she saw the Malfoys. And that was something to worry about. At the very least, they needed watched because of all that had happened in the last two days. After a quick signal to Kingsley, who was disguised as well, Tonks focused on the Malfoys while he kept watch on the rest of the Alley.
As they moved along, she noticed Draco sidling in their direction, trying to stay unnoticed by everyone, including his parents. As they all had been briefed by Rufus the day before on what he wanted, though he didn't tell them why, she mumbled, making sure to act like she wasn't paying attention to Draco, “Just let it go, whatever it is. We'll make sure no spells are tossed about. Let him flap his lips. It'll give us the ammo we need.” Hearing murmurs of agreement with everyone acting like they hadn't noticed him yet, she then said, “Molly, stick close to me. He's more likely to say something if he thinks you aren't paying attention.” Then she signaled Kingsley the direction to look. Her partner would catch on quickly to what she was going for.Kingsley did, stepping closer, drawing Molly away to give Draco all the rope in the world he needed to hang himself with. That was their orders, as they weren't supposed to engage, and he was more than willing to let it go on. After all, the catch they would get with this would give them leverage in many ways.Draco made his way slowly in that direction, keeping an eye on the adults. When he felt they were far enough away that he wouldn't be overheard and didn't see them paying attention to the ones around his age, he stepped closer then hissed, clutching his wand, “I want you lot to deliver a message to Potter from me.”“Get lost, Malfoy,” Ron sneered, clutching his own wand.“We don't want you around,” Hermione sniffed, making sure Ginny didn't engage. She was still underage, so she would get in trouble if she did magic. No sense chancing it.“Shut up Weasel and Mudblood,” Draco snarled, lifting his wand. “Tell him that I'm coming for him. The Dark Lord wants me for a mission and I'll relish whatever it is. Potter is in my sights. I'll make sure I deliver him to the Dark Lord. Mark or no Mark, I'll be a Death Eater before school resumes. Then all of you in that castle need to worry. Pass that along.”Kingsley had to fight the urge to grin hugely at what he heard. That was more than enough to land Draco in Azkaban for the foreseeable future. A glance at Tonks showed her grinning as well. So, before it could escalate, he dropped the glamour and she changed back. Then he moved towards Draco, showing a deceptive speed, he had the brat's arms pinned behind his back and cuffed in seconds. “Come along, Draco, you're going to the Ministry.”Taking up a position by her partner, Tonks began reading Draco his rights, ignoring his sputtering and threats about his father. As she finished and Kingsley Apparated him away, she turned to Narcissa and Lucius. Though she tried not to look smug, she didn't quite manage. Then she told them, “You can meet us at the Ministry.” Before they could say anything, she, too, Apparated away. Oh, Rufus would be pleased with this turn of events.
