Chapter 24
“We may have a solution to one of our more troubling problems,” Lucius told everyone as he read through the missive from the dragon reserve which just arrived.
“Which one?” Sirius asked, looking up from the mass of paperwork he and Bill were filling out. They would welcome any solution to the multitude of problems they were dealing with, honestly. The less they had, the better off they’d be.
“Schooling for Draco,” Lucius told him then passed the letter to Remus. Hands folded on the table, he explained, “The dragon reserve will take on the schooling, shifting him to apprentice status as long as he signs a binding agreement to not drop out or change his mind after the first six weeks. This will mean they take on everything when it comes to teaching him what he needs. He won’t take the NEWTS in the end, but will switch right into his career with grades recorded as an apprentice rather than a student.”
“If this is what Draco wants, it’s the better way to handle it and will take the pressure off all of us in the house,” Narcissa nodded, smiling a little as she thought about it.
“We’ll talk to him tonight to ensure he won’t change his mind as he’ll end up locked into this career path in a way he wouldn’t any other, but if he’s certain, we’ll go this way,” Lucius told her with a relieved sigh. “If he and Charlie sign off on it, this will only leave us Harry’s schooling to deal with.”
“And we can wiggle plenty with his career path, I think,” Bill added after signing another batch of papers then pushing them aside. “We just need to see what they toss our way. If we have an idea of what’s on the NEWTS, we can gear whatever that way and do without some areas then only teach theory on parts.”
“Doubt it’s going to reach the point we have to worry about the NEWTS, honestly,” Sirius added, pushing more papers Bill’s way then leaning back with a groan. “My thought is we’ll be long gone before it comes up.” Seated at the kitchen table, they had taken on tending to the basics with everyone else at work. This way they could work on plenty together and catch up the best they could without ending up disturbed too much. “We just need to make this look good is my thought.”
“More we didn’t think about,” Remus admitted with a slow nod after thinking it over.
“If it wouldn’t end up in Albus’ hands and him thinking something wonky was there, I’d say we just pull Harry out completely or have him drop out then go the apprenticeship route as well,” Bill sighed. “The minute those papers would hit, Albus would hear about it then he’d end up involved or questioning plenty.”
“Oh yes,” Lucius agreed with a heavy sigh.
“I have an idea here,” Sirius then said, pushing the paperwork back and looking around intently. Before anyone could ask, he explained, “Let’s call him over and explain the bit with Draco once we know for sure. It’s not a huge hardship there and would look normal. When we’re done, we’ll mention we think this is a good idea for Harry as well since it takes the pressure off us trying to meet certain requirements for school. It’s his reaction I want to see with that bit, honestly. As of now, there’s not much we can do with plenty, but the longer the tether grows, the more we can. While we might not hear the real reason behind whatever, we’ll pick up enough information that we can relate to other areas.”
“Good idea,” Bill nodded before anyone else chimed in. This he did like so they could judge the way the wind was blowing.
After a glance at Lucius, who looked at him nodding, Remus agreed, “We’ll go that route. You and Sirius have the experience needed to take on the apprenticeship. It would actually end up considered a very good solution to the multitude of problems facing someone homeschooled.”
“Instead of waiting, I say we do it today,” Narcissa tossed in, looking around. “We present what we have and go from there. It’ll blindside him plenty and no one else needs to know what we’re doing. With Fred and George trying to wiggle what they can out of Severus, we can toss them part of what we see to help.”
“And we may end up with hints of his other agenda,” Sirius added with a nod. “We won’t hear anything which can actually help a great deal, but will some. Anything leaning there is something we need.”
“More true statements,” Lucius agreed. “Yes, let’s do this. Now. We’ll send off any hint of what else we’re doing and focus on the papers for school and the bond when he comes in then dance fast to see what we can pry out of him.”
“Send something off and we’ll prepare,” Bill told them, starting to send the paperwork off to their room and summoning what else they needed. While they didn’t have much time to prepare, all of them were good enough at thinking on their feet to pull this off. They just had to work at it, nothing more.
“Yes, this is a good choice for Draco because of the complexity of classes he needs,” Albus nodded as he read through the letter from the reserve. “Even Hogwarts normally couldn’t give him some of the classes required, as Charlie knows, sadly. If he goes this route, he’ll end up with a better education than most, honestly. They’ll gear even the core classes he takes towards this specialty.”
Once he finished the letter, he pushed it back towards Lucius then folded his hands on the table and nodded, “If he’s willing, go this route. While all of you, with the help of some who come in, could cover some of the classes, the realism is this is a better way and he’ll pick up what he needs to know rather than have a generalized class where he has to learn more later on.”
“We thought so as well, but wanted your opinion first, Albus,” Lucius nodded, putting the letter aside.
“With the problems we have when it comes to Harry’s career path, we thought this might end up a better route for us as well,” Sirius then tossed out there to poke the old man and see what flowed forth from it.
“Sirius and I can easily take on what he needs since the training was so similar. The only issue is potions when it comes to teaching. If we go about it this way, we can do almost all by theory and not have to worry about the practical for the NEWTS. Since we aren’t sure he can even follow the career path with the bond, it’ll end up a load easier on all of us.” Then Bill waited for what Albus had to say before deciding what else to do.
“No, I don’t think that’s wise,” Albus told him with a shake of his head. “Go about Harry’s the normal route. If you do it as homeschooling, we can get him in and out of the castle for classes if you hit a trouble spot, such as in potions. By switching to the apprenticeship, we can’t do so. One never knows what might come about or crop up with so much. It also leaves the option open of Harry returning to school if he needs protection or whatever. Let’s leave his normally. While there are issues with some classes, we can handle them.”
Honestly? Sirius expected this, but was still stunned when Albus came across with it and the excuses. Though shocked, he would poke a bit more to see if they could glean more information. With a shake of his head, he told Albus, “I don’t think any of that is a good idea. While it could help, Harry being in that castle, since Bill and I would have to come with him, is a bad idea. Not only is the bond hidden, so it would look very odd and raise questions, there is the matter of running into three people who caused all out war in the house. We don’t need help making this worse, Albus. I think, with Bill and Harry agreeing, this is a better option. Pulling him out is easy enough, honestly, then we go from there.”
“Sirius is right,” Bill nodded, picking up on what he was doing and planning to push it from there. “While we have a better tether than everyone else, the fact remains it’s not good enough to allow Harry into the school on his own. We’d have to go with him. The talk that would arise from that isn’t something we need. Then there is the multitude of problems from the other students. Ron, Ginny and Hermione are only three of them. Children of known Death Eaters are others. Then there is the general gossip. The mere thought of trying is nightmare inducing! Not something any of us want to chance.”
“Well, yes, there are issues. The ones you mentioned are only a few,” Albus admitted with a soft sigh and shake of his head. “They aren’t insurmountable as we have plenty of time to sort them through before we take it on. I just don’t think the apprenticeship for Harry is the way to go, what with the situation what it is. If you take that step, there is no reversing it, then it leaves us with very few options when it comes to help if something arises.”
“Albus—the castle is a bad idea all the way around,” Sirius groaned, shaking his head. “I don’t care what anyone comes up with, it’s a nightmare waiting to happen. Especially since we don’t know what we’re dealing with when it comes to the bond and how it works. The nightmare we went through with Molly and that lot might end up tame if someone sets Harry off. If we go the apprenticeship route, we can go at our own pace with whatever and not end up locked into having set classes for anything. We might need that because of so much. I do think it’s the better route.”
“In some ways it may seem that way, yes,” Albus admitted with a nod. “In others it’ll end up a hindrance for plenty, especially if you need help with some classes.” Then he began talking them through what he saw as the problem areas and how it would hurt plenty.
Though they kept playing along, poking to see what information they could garner, Bill, Harry and Sirius kept glancing at each other, concerned expressions on their faces. To them, it seemed like Albus wanted Harry back in the castle and under his thumb despite the multitude of nightmarish issues it could cause. No, none of them liked this at all.
“Sirius,” Remus sighed, shaking his head, “you lot—you need out as fast as we can manage.” Albus had just left and those in the house were plenty troubled by all they heard from him. “He wants Harry around for something specific. I’m sure those plans are the driving force behind wanting him in the castle, not what he spouts.”
“I agree,” Lucius nodded, glancing down at the troubled looking Narcissa. “We set the goal of right after the start of term and press for it. Let’s get as much in place and tended to before then, but you need to leave.”
“We’ll plan on it,” Bill groaned, already envisioning the amount of work and planning they had to do before they could vanish and hoping they could press it as fast they could with some areas. “We just need to figure out as much as we can until then. Some of this—it takes time to get it through the proper channels.”
“Let me see what my Solicitor can do for part of this. The rest—we need to figure it out, like the bonds and what Snape knows so we can prepare. And both of those are nightmares we’re getting nowhere with.”
“True,” Remus groused, shaking his head. “Just—we need you out, soon. I don’t know what Albus is scheming, but I don’t like it. Let’s see what Fred and George can manage to wheedle out of Severus. We’ll take that and let Lucius deal with him, then go from there. Between the two, it should give us an idea of what is really going on.”
“Add in what we can glean for ourselves,” Lucius added.
“Not as easy as it sounds,” Bill pointed out, looking around. “We have no clue what to expect since we don’t know why we’ve managed what we have or how to make it better.”
“Another true assessment,” Remus admitted with a heavy sigh. “We’ll just go on as we are and hope something pops which will give us clues. All we can do. That and plan to get you out.”
Once more summoning the massive amount of paperwork they had so they could send it off, Sirius then began asking about impressions of what Albus said. While they all heard the same thing, each would have a different take or see it in a way they hadn’t. With as complicated as this situation was, all perspectives would help them.
By this juncture, Severus was seriously at a loss about how the get the information he wanted from the twins. He had used all his considerable powers of persuasion and normal tactics, though he was careful there so he didn’t invoke a backlash from the bond, and didn’t get anywhere. The issue came from the twin menaces wanting plenty in return he wasn’t comfortable giving up. Now they were at a stalemate and he didn’t know how to move it forward.
As he thought over the situation, he flipped through the books looking for the spell he had pondered. In his mind, this was the key to ending the stalemate. If he could find one the bond didn’t reject and he took no issue with everything which came along with it, he would apply it then go from there. All he planned for was what he said wouldn’t ever end up revealed. Everything else—it would end up decided when he received the answers to the questions he had.
After sending the book to the stack he had finished, he picked up the next one and began to leaf through it then looked up when he heard the twins approaching. Leaning back in his chair, he waited for them to come in, listening to what they had to say. From the sound of it they were just discussing the normal with the business and products they were working on, consulting a sheet Fred was holding when they sat down. “No issues?” He asked, though assumed there wasn’t.
“Nothing,” George told him, taking the paper from his brother.
“Just the normal,” Fred assured him with a sigh.
Then, eying the books all over, George observed, “You look like you’re staying busy.”
“Up to anything we know about?” Fred then inquired.
“I was thinking about what you want to know and the reverse,” Severus said after a bracing sip of tea. “My thought was finding a spell which will allow us to talk about whatever, but preserve the secrecy and wouldn’t allow us to impart what we hear. This way we are all protected.”
“Might be the way to go,” George nodded, liking the idea.
“If you can find one,” Fred pointed out, thinking like his brother. His thought was if it was out there and they could get him moving the way they wanted when it came to so much, they could manage to persuade him to talk to the others.
“Would you be willing to talk if I find a spell which will work?” Severus asked so he knew where he stood with the whole idea. If they were willing, he’d find something quickly then they’d press on.
“Something we can deal with,” Fred nodded.
“I agree,” George tossed in.
“You just have to find one and show it to us so we know what we’re dealing with,” Fred added.
“If we all agree, we’ll go for it. Provided you’ll answer our questions as well,” George told him.
“I will,” Severus assured them though still wasn’t enthralled with the idea. “As long as they don’t end up too personal,” he then added as he didn’t want to delve into some areas.
“We’ll have to define too personal when we start,” Fred nodded.
“Because what we give up will depend on what you do,” George told him pointedly.
“If it stays just between us, I don’t see where it matters,” Fred shrugged, planning to work with this the best they could to get the information they needed.
“Since we’ll be together for the rest of our lives and won’t want to make ourselves miserable, it’s not like we’ll use it to torment you,” George added, leaning back and crossing his legs.
“True,” Severus conceded, thinking over what they said. “When I find the spell, we’ll discuss it more then work out how we want to tend to matters.”
“Think you’ll manage?” George asked, curious.
“Finding anything close?” Fred then inquired, wondering if he would manage.
“Actually, yes,” Severus nodded. “It’s down to narrowing it down to the right spell. There are plenty in this class which will do the trick. I just want to make certain I find the best one for the situation, nothing more.”
“Let us know and we’ll work with you on what we’ll talk about,” both of them said together after exchanging a meaningful look when he wasn’t watching. Yes, this is what they needed. Once they knew, they’d push him to talk to the rest. It could only help plenty, for all of them.
With a nod, Severus then began explaining just what he was looking for. His thought on the matter was the more they knew, the more likely they would agree to what he wanted then give up much-needed information. Once they did, he would go from there on many matters.
Like normal anymore, Charlie was holding Draco after the teen fell asleep curled up to him. With a smile, he shut his eyes and gave a soft sigh. Draco agreed to take the apprenticeship and they were signing the papers the following night. While he liked the idea for a multitude of reasons, the one poking its head up most was he would have someone in his life who understood the allure of the dragons and would give him someone to share his passion with. He doubted he would ever find that any other way. While the relationship wasn’t what he wanted, the fact the two would share this was good with him.
When the clock in the room chimed the hour softly, he gave a sigh then turned over, making certain not to disturb Draco. Curling around the younger man, he held him close, head resting against Draco’s. Eyes drifting shut as he felt Draco curl up tighter to him, he drifted off to sleep, happy.
Eyes opening when the bed shifted, Lucius was slightly disoriented but quickly figured out it was just Remus moving around in his sleep. His partner was still sore from the full moon and was now shifting in his sleep more because of it. From what Remus said, it would work itself out in a few days then it would go back to normal.
Once Remus settled down, he curled up to him once more with a contented sigh. As his eyes once more drifted shut, he vowed to find a way to help Remus more the following full moon. While everyone told him there wasn’t much anyone could do, he would find something to assist. It would just take work and, possibly, throwing some money around. That he could and would do.
When Remus’ arm draped over him, he gave a small smile, feeling better. Soon sleep once more claimed him.
With a grumbling sigh, Fred shifted then looked over the sprawled Severus’ back to his brother. As expected, George, too, was awake. This was normal of course. As was the way they were in bed with Severus between them, both of them having an arm draped over the man. From what he could tell, Severus was in the middle of a nightmare of some kind, what probably woke both of them. Another glance at his brother and the two nodded then pressed tighter to the man between them, giving him a light squeeze.
Once Severus seemed to settle, the two nodded to each other then rested their heads back on their pillows, eyes going shut. Since it seemed to work and everything was calm once more, they would probably manage to fall back to sleep quickly. While this was odd, they were going with it and just adjusting.
As he listened to Bill and Sirius breathing deeply, Harry smiled, though he didn’t open his eyes. There was something about the sound of the two sleeping on either side of him which was comforting in a way nothing in his life had ever been. He didn’t know why for sure, though thought it related to the feeling protected bit, but he adored it. In fact, he looked forward to curling up with the two and hearing them fall asleep for this reason each night. It was like—he didn’t know how to explain it other than there was no feeling like it in the world. And he loved it more than he could ever explain.
When the two seemed to shift in unison in their sleep and press closer to him, their individual smells surrounding him, Harry gave a contented sigh. Yes, he loved this. Pressing back against Bill and giving Sirius a squeeze where his arm draped over his godfather, he snuggled in and seemed to melt into the mattress. Never before in his life had he slept as well as he had since the bond and being with the two. While he didn’t understand that either, he assumed it related to plenty else with the bond. It didn’t matter though because he liked it and would continue to.
Focusing on the breathing of the two, Harry soon drifted off to sleep, a smile on his face as he did.
