“Bring him in girl.”
Hermione sucked in a lungful of air when she heard Ferdinand shout. He could help. Maybe. She levitated Draco inside the Shrieking Shack and maneuvered him to the bed. He still wasn’t breathing and his face was turning blue. She vanished his shirt and nearly threw up at the sight of the jagged hole in his stomach.
Ferdinand muttered a spell and Draco arched off the bed, coughing and sputtering. He must have shocked his heart. She dug furiously through her bag, trying to find a healing potion designed to fix puncture wounds but she didn’t see one. She did find a blood replenisher and quickly dumped it down Draco’s throat.
“Drink,” she ordered when he started spluttering.
Draco managed to down it and then collapse, passing out from the pain. He looked terrible and she was sure he wouldn’t last much longer. Ferdinand was muttering spell after spell while fiddling with something in his hand. She kept digging in the bag, careful not to disturb all the scales they’d collected, 54 in all, each labeled and categorized by dragon name. If Draco survived this, they would be rich indeed.
“How is he?”
Hermione nearly fell off the bed when Snape’s voice sounded behind her. She quickly scampered out of the way as he went to check on Draco. She was never so glad for him being there.
“Nasty puncture wound,” Ferdinand muttered, still casting several spells before stepping back. “Broke his ribs. Weak charm on his leg is holding it together but it’s still got wounds from the bone popping through.”
“What happened?” Snape hissed. He had a bag hanging over his shoulder, which he promptly sat on the bed and started digging through.
“The Horntail,” Hermione said softly. “Mean son of a bitch. I held it still while he shackled it. I kept it busy while he harvested but it broke loose. I think the hole is from the shackle busting. The leg was either the force of a foot or a tail, I don’t know. I was just trying to keep it from crushing him to death.”
Snape cursed a blue streak and poured two potions over the hole before muttering something long and melodic. She watched in awe as the hole started knitting back together. Draco moaned in pain but held still when Snape put a hand on his chest. After several minutes, the hole was closed, though still bright red and angry.
“Clean him up,” Snape ordered. “I can’t do anything else for a few minutes and that blood is in the way.”
“Yes, Master,” Hermione said automatically, conjuring a cloth and some water in a basin.
She carefully vanished the rest of Draco’s clothes, not really caring about Ferdinand being there. She gently washed away the blood, surprised to find several purpling bruises. She hadn’t thought he’d been that beat up. Judging by the way she felt, she’d be solid black in the morning. She didn’t care though. If he pulled through, they’d have done it. Well, most of it. They still had to pay, but the hard part would be over. Luna would be at Hogwarts by the afternoon and she could speak with her about the Quibbler issue then. A letter to Skeeter would get the Prophet story rolling. She could help Draco read over the proposals Sunday and pick which one would be easiest to pass.
Planning calmed her down, allowed her to think clearly. The mission had been exhilarating and completely terrifying and successful. With 54 scales, they should be able to buy the rare ingredients that Snape needed to complete several expensive potions. There might even be a little left over to start up the apothecary. If not, they’d have to find another ingredient to harvest until they could complete the contracts for the dragon reserve.
“You may stop,” Snape said gently, startling her from her task. She hadn’t realized that Draco was completely clean.
“Yes, Master,” she said, vanishing her supplies.
Snape cocked his head. “Are you hurt?”
She shrugged and winced. “I’ll be fine. He patched me up during the mission.”
Snape frowned but nodded just the same. “Let me finish him up and then I’d like to inspect your wounds.”
She nodded and watched as he performed spells to mend Draco’s ribs and rubbed salve over the wounds in his injured leg. Then he scanned his entire body with a spell that showed a 3-D image of the inside of Draco’s body. There were a few spots where he was bleeding internally, mostly from his side. The rest looked fine. His leg was still shattered, barely held together with her weak spell. His ribs had spider web cracks in them. Snape took out a bottle of skelegro and dumped it down Draco’s throat.
Draco’s eyes flew open and she was sure he’d spit it out but Snape put his hand over Draco’s mouth and left had no choice but to swallow. She almost laughed at the green tinge Draco’s face turned. Skelegro was disgusting stuff. He’d be right as rain in a few hours but it had to have been bad if he’d had to drink it. Normally, skelegro was only reserved for growing bones. She supposed he’d just about have to start from scratch the way it looked.
“Stay still,” Snape ordered before kissing Draco softly on the forehead.
“Granger,” he rasped.
“She’s here,” Snape said, stepping out of the way so Draco could see her.
“Her back,” he whispered. “And waist.”
Snape frowned and advanced on her, quickly pulling her out of the chair and spinning her around. Before she could so much as squeak, he had her nude.
“Merlin,” Snape croaked. “What happened?”
“Claw in the back,” she muttered. “And the Vipertooth grazed me.”
“More like took a hunk out of you,” Snape growled. “Go lay next to Draco.”
“Yes, Master,” she said, stumbling over to the bed. Now that the adrenaline had worn off, she was quite tired.
“I drained the poison,” Draco said. “But it’s still not healed.”
Snape hummed and nodded. “You’ve done well but she’ll need to sleep for the rest.”
“Why?” Hermione asked, trying to sit up.
“Because cutting away the dead flesh is going to be excruciating,” Snape said. “And growing it back is worse.”
“What are you talking about?” she frowned.
“I lied,” Draco said softly. “The claw took out a good portion of your back. And the tooth… I glamoured it so you wouldn’t freak out.”
She frowned and looked down at her hip. Blood drained from her face as she saw the ugly black strips of flesh hanging from the oozing hole in her hip.
“Merlin,” she whispered. “It doesn’t feel that bad.”
“Dark magic,” Draco said softly. “It’s good for more than just destruction.”
“Sleep,” Snape said. “Both of you.”
“But the scales,” Hermione protested when she noticed Snape raising his wand.
He smiled. “We’ll look at them later. Now, Sleep!”
---
She saw the horntail twist and lunge. The chain creaked and she threw everything she had at it, hoping it would be enough. The chain snapped and Draco let out a blood curdling scream.
---
“DRACO!” she screamed, sitting up to try and get him away from the dragon.
“Easy,” Snape said soothingly, coaxing her to lie back down. “You’re both fine.”
She took a deep breath and tried to get her bearings. She was in a bed. It smelled musty and the hangings around it were in tatters. She turned to see Draco looking at her curiously. He looked better than he had, some of the color returning to his face.
“Sorry,” she said sheepishly.
He grinned. “You called me Draco.”
She frowned. “I didn’t call you out for yelling Hermione.”
“Touché,” he said, his grin still present. “So, how did we do?”
“Fifty four scales,” Snape said, a tinge of pride in his voice. “Scales from common dragons are going for around 500 galleons a piece. But you two managed to get scales from dragons thought not to exist anymore. Those could be worth thousands.”
“Is it enough?” Hermione asked.
“We’ll have plenty to buy the ingredients I need,” Snape said. “And we can easily harvest those that I can’t buy. We’ll need more to get an actual apothecary but for now, it’s enough.”
“Thank Merlin,” Draco said, grabbing Hermione and pulling her into his chest. “I’m looking forward to a stiff drink.”
She giggled and snuggled into him. “I second that.”
“You two will be doing no such thing,” Snape chided. “You might have done well, but that does not excuse you from your punishment.”
“WHAT?” they yelled.
“We damn near died and you’re still going to punish us?” Draco continued.
Snape smirked. “I was going to punish you before you went but I thought you’d need your strength. And it seems as though we will have to wait a while. So, part two of your punishment, you must remain sober until you are healed.”
“That’s not fair,” Draco yelled.
“Punishment isn’t supposed to be fair,” Snape drawled.
“But can’t we just settle up?” Hermione pleaded. “We did well, right?”
Snape smirked. “We’ll turn you Slytherin yet. But no. Punishment first. Then reward.”
“Wait,” Draco said. “We’re going to get a reward?”
Snape nodded. “But first, you must go back to school. I don’t think they’ve sent out a search party yet, but if you aren’t back by nightfall, they will.”
“What time is it?” Hermione asked, sitting back up with a wince.
“Half past five,” Snape said softly. “You were out for a few hours.”
She looked down at her hip, noticing that it was heavily bandaged. “How bad is it?”
“The skin should be viable now,” Snape said. He walked over and removed the bandages with a flick of his wand. “You’ll need to limit your activity until Monday at the earliest.”
She studied the skin, a bright patch of pink on her hip that covered from her hipbone to nearly the crease in her leg and a good hand width wide. The new skin was soft and tender to the touch, making her wince when Snape ran a finger over it. She could also tell it was rather thin and fragile.
She bit her lip and studied it. “Do I have to keep anything on it?”
Snape handed her a small jar of balm. “You’ll need to smooth this over it once an hour and keep it covered with a bandage. I recommend wearing a skirt to prevent any rough clothing on it. Your back is in better condition so you can go two hours between applications. I’d skip the bra.”
“Wonderful,” she said dryly, wondering exactly what her back had looked like.
“I like it,” Draco said with a smirk.
“You,” Snape said pointedly, “will need to stay off that leg until Monday. It’s better but any sudden movements could shatter it again. You’ll also need to take another dose of strengthening potion to sort out your heart.”
Draco frowned. “What’s wrong with my heart?”
“Ferdinand had to shock it to restart it,” Hermione said softly. “Did he damage it?”
Snape shook his head. “No. He did what was necessary. However, it has left your heart rather weak. A few doses of strengthening potions will correct it.”
“Nice,” Draco said dryly. “So, I suppose we’re dismissed?”
Snape nodded and pointed to a nearby chair. “I’ve taken the liberty of summoning you some clothing since your other garments were either destroyed or vanished.”
Hermione picked up the clothes and sorted through them, frowning. “You didn’t retrieve any knickers.”
Snape smirked and redressed her hip with a flick of his wand. “You don’t need them, especially with that newly healed skin.”
She rolled her eyes and slid the dress on, hissing when it hit the skin of her back and then her hip. “I see your point.”
“Where is Ferdinand anyway?” Draco asked.
“Still hanging about,” Ferdinand called from the shadows. “But I prefer to give my children their privacy.”
“I’m afraid we owe you one,” Hermione said quietly.
“Send my newest child recruit to meet me when she gets in and we’ll call it even.”
“Are you really going to turn her?” Hermione asked curiously.
“If she agrees.”
“Won’t she be kicked out of school?” Draco asked as he tugged an undershirt on.
“Hogwarts allows werewolves to attend,” Snape cut in. “There are no laws forbidding vampires. However, the sunlight would prove problematic for attending classes.”
“And that is why any turning will happen after she graduates,” Ferdinand called. “But that doesn’t mean I can’t spend a little time with her, educate her before the fact. It is so much easier when they are prepared before the turning.”
“Would have been nice,” Snape growled.
Ferdinand chuckled and stepped out to where they could see him. “But you did so wonderfully.” Snape snorted. “Come now. You’re living the life you were meant to have.”
“In the bloody shadows,” Snape growled.
“It’s not so bad,” Ferdinand said softly, running a fingertip over Snape’s jaw.
Snape’s eyes fluttered and then he pulled away. “Now.”
“Yes,” Ferdinand said, his smile falling. “I suppose so. You do have lovely slaves.”
“They’ll be lovelier when they learn to behave,” Snape said darkly, though there was a hint of affection in his tone.
Ferdinand chuckled. “Come now, child. You don’t want them too compliant. Where is the fun in that?”
Snape smirked. “Indeed. Slaves, come here and wish your Master goodbye properly.”
Draco took a step towards him and grunted, quickly switching to his other foot. “Shit that hurts.”
Snape frowned and flicked his wand. “Try now.”
Draco took a tentative step forward, stumbling when his foot didn’t touch the ground. “What the hell is that?”
“Modified cushioning charm. It will keep the weight off your leg while allowing you to walk. Do try not to strain it. It breaks down after a few hundred steps.”
Draco nodded. “Just teach me how to reapply it so I can get to my dorm and I’m good.”
“You will both eat first,” Snape snapped, nevertheless writing down the spell on a slip of parchment and handing it to Draco. “And then you will go straight to bed. I will see you tonight.”
Hermione made it to him first, bending gingerly to kiss him on the cheek. “Goodbye Master.”
Draco mirrored her. “Goodbye Master.”
Snape nodded and rose, kissing them both on their foreheads. “Be careful in the tunnel. Do not break that skin apart.”
They nodded and slowly made their way back towards Hogwarts. Hopefully no one noticed their absence.
