In all her life Hermione would never be able to explain how that lighter worked after so long but it did. It was the screams that woke her up first and that’s when she realized that her bedroom was too hot. The walls were glowing red and there was smoke in the air, she coughed and put her hand over her mouth. She rubbed her eyes hoping that she would wake up but the sting from the smoke told her that she was already awake and that the fire was real.
She stood from her bed and dropped instantly to her knees coughing more. Tears filled her eyes as she crossed to her fireplace but stopped as more screams caught her attention. Her patients were still alive out there and she couldn’t leave them to parish, she had to save them. She made her way to the door and touched the handle quickly to make sure that it wasn’t too hot. It wasn’t and she turned it but it was locked, she cursed herself under her breath and unlocked it. She pushed and pushed but it wouldn’t budge, she screamed for help, she moved lower and lower to the ground trying to get clear air. She could hear footsteps of her patients and prayed that they would make it outside to the safety of the grounds. Suddenly, something on the other side was hitting the door and she moved to the side just in time to have it slam open. Bellatrix stood there with fear and confusion battling in her eyes.

There was banging on his apartment door and then a spell that blasted it to pieces. Harry, Lucius, Draco and at least four Auror’s came barreling in to his private home. They found him asleep in his bed and looked confused, Harry and Draco looked annoyed and Lucius looked a little sick, there was something wrong. He questioned them but the Aurors ignored his questions and searched Severus’s belongings before turning back to Harry.
“I told you that he had nothing to do with it” Harry snapped “We’re wasting time!”
“Potter” Severus said “W-what’s h-happening?”
“Someone set the hospital on fire” Harry answered as they all started to leave with Snape in tow.
“S-Saint M-Mungo’s?” He asked though for some reason he just knew that that wasn’t the hospital they were talking about.
“Hermione’s” Draco said “A house-elf managed to escape and get to us, the rest are saving as many patients as they can”
“H-Hermione?” He asked and Harry looked nervous.
“I don’t know” He answered.
The beautiful hospital that Hermione had tried so hard to make a home was engulfed in flames by the time Snape and the others reached it. Ron Weasley apparated in minutes later and attempted to enter but was restrained by three Aurors all the while screaming for Hermione. Neville and Luna apparated in next and Luna was sobbing loudly as they looked through all the patients for the lone Healer that had been in there. Emergency Healers from Saint Mungo’s were popping in and out with injured patients and Angelina, the Weasley twins and Bridget were trying to get in.
“Look!” Angelina cried pointing at the second floor window where they could see someone standing and looking outside. It was Hermione, she was still in her pajama’s and she looked terrified, Harry could see her bottom lip quivering but he could also see determination in her eyes as she turned away from the window to face someone they couldn’t see.
“What is she doing?” Draco asked fear evident in his voice.
“She’s trapped, sir” Said a badly burned house-elf “I is trying to save her but the stairs is gone sir”
“NO!” Harry screamed “There’s another way…there’s got to be another way!”
“Give me my wand!” Severus roared “Goddamn it you fucking morons give me my wand!”
“I tries to stay with Miss Hermione and Miss Bellatrix” The elf said “But Miss Hermione says no…she tells Mimsy to take Miss Bellatrix and leave the house but…”
“But what?” Ron snapped.
“But Miss Bellatrix won’t come to Mimsy” The elf answers “She looks confused and tries to push Miss Hermione to me but Miss Hermione won’t leave her and then…then a beam falls and hits Mimsy with flames and Miss Hermione tells Mimsy to leave right away that they finds another way out together”
“Leave it to Hermione” Ron said with tears on his face. There was the sound of breaking glass and they all looked up to see Hermione falling from the second story window and plummeting to the earth beneath her, landing with a sickening crunch.

Bella pulled Hermione to her feet none too gently and pushed her in to the hallway. Hermione grabbed a blanket from a hallway closet and ran back to her bathroom, wetting it she wrapped it around the two of them. The entire downstairs was engulfed in flame and no matter how many spells she shot at the flames there seemed to be nothing that would stop them. She saw a house-elf apparating in and out of the burning building with the patients, they went in and out of rooms looking for a way out before the elf was in front of them.
“Take Bella and go” Hermione said to Mimsy.
“No” Bella said shaking her head looking confused and pushing Hermione to the elf.
“Bella” Hermione said “The elf is okay, she will keep you safe, just go”
“No” Bella said and again tried to push Hermione towards the elf but then there was a large crack and a beam fell down right on Mimsy. Hermione screamed in horror fearing for the elf and angry with Bella for not leaving.
“Mimsy” Hermione ran to the injured elf holding back her gasp at the sight of the singed flesh that was hanging on the elf’s face “Just go. Bella and I can find another way out, together. Just go and save yourself…that’s an order”
When the elf was gone she turned to look at Bella who was watching her closely and waiting for her to make a decision. Hermione realized that Bella trusted her, that she wouldn’t leave her behind to an uncertain faith because Hermione didn’t do that to her. Tears sprang to her eyes and she tried to keep them from flowing down her cheeks but she was scared and knew they wouldn’t get out. Bella took her hand and they walked to the end of the hall and looked out, Hermione wiped a tear away when she saw all her patient (minus Cami) was out of the house. She could also see her friends and Severus, she hated herself for not letting herself be with him now. She was so stupid, always had to be Miss Perfect and follow the rules.
“I apologize” Hermione said to Bella “I should have kept you guys safer. I should have…I should have done something different”
“You kept us safe when we needed you to” Bella surprised her by saying in the past week or two the woman had barely uttered a word and now when she spoke she was talking sense “We thank you, Healer Granger”
“I’m scared” Hermione breathed tightening her grip on the woman’s hand and turning her back to the window to look at her.
“I’ve never felt fear” Bella said honestly “Or love, compassion. Only hatred and the lust of power and yet I know when someone feels those emotions towards me or others” She looked behind her “Forgive me”
“For what?” Hermione asked, confused.
“This” She answered and in one swift movement Bellatrix shoved Hermione hard in the chest and sent her backwards through the second story window. Hermione didn’t scream as she fell and only gasped a little when she landed, her eyes were locked on the figure of the woman that watched her land before disappearing out of sight. Seconds later flames came shooting out the window and Hermione knew that Bella was dead.

Hermione sat in the living room of the one bedroom flat she shared with her boyfriend. The night of the fire she had fractured her spine, broke her hip, her ankle and an elbow. Her ankle and elbow had been healed quickly and only in a few days, her hip took a month of disgusting potions to fully heal and then another month of physical therapy to be able to walk normally on it. Her spine was a slow healer and she still had to take potions for it along with wearing a brace during the day with limited movement.
“You’ve got some mail” Severus announced as he walked in and kissed her forehead.
“Thank you” She said pulling him down for another much deeper kiss.
In the year she had spent a lot of time doing research for the potions lab in the ministry, she had decided though it broke her heart, that she would give up her healers license for a while. But even homebound she had made a name for herself and the ministry was counting the days until she would be able to sit in an office for them. Every one of her patients had made it out alive, they never found Cami or Bella’s bodies and many assumed that Cami had started the fire and then lost control of it. Her family tried to sue Hermione but the Wizengamont told them that they were lucky to not be prison themselves so not to push their luck. Hermione still did some therapy sessions with her old patients and made sure they were treated well but didn’t want to work at the hospital anymore.
“Who’s the letter from?” Severus asked as he put her cup of tea down in front of her “Another man that you’ve been seeing while I’m away at work?”
“How’d you guess?” She asked with a grin and he glared at her “No, I haven’t read it yet. Hold on” She opened it and nearly stopped breathing.
Dear Healer Granger,
I overestimated Bellatrix at the time of the fire or maybe I underestimated you. She was a mindless killer and yet she helped you, not to worry that frizzy little head I see in the window every afternoon. One year away from you with constant reminders of how you and your friends messed up her life and how her life should be and she is the Bellatrix LeStrange I read about. We will be seeing you…soon.
