Chapter 24: Halloween party Part I

Severus' POV

As I got ready for the dance, I remembered my earlier conversation with Lily. I had agreed to meet her in the three broomsticks when Alex would be having her fancy lunch with Black's parents. Regulus had told me that his mother had insisted on meeting Alex before giving her approval for them to attend the Malfoy engagement party together. Lunch in the most expensive restaurant in Hogsmade had been his parents' way of trying to impress Alex. I knew she wouldn't be impressed by it, Alex didn't judge people by their money.
Lily had sat down next to me, I felt as if we were eleven once again. 'What's wrong?' she had asked. I shrugged 'I don't want to talk about it' I had told her. She had simply put a hand on my arm, making me look at her. 'I just want you to know that you have friends who love you ,and care for you. ' she had said. This hadn't been what I had expected. 'Whenever you feel ready to talk, come and find us.' She had said. 'Even if you don't feel like talking to us, don't push us away.' With that she stood, She made to leave me, but turned around 'Alex thinks you're mad at her, she worries about you.' she told me. 'Also, she thinks you don't want to take her to the party.' I had told her to sit down again. I hadn't told her about that night on the Astronomy tower, but I assured her that I still wanted to take Alex to the dance, and I was still their friend. I had just been struggling with myself for quite a bit. I stayed with Lily the rest of the day, we did everything we usually did when we were in Hogsmade. Until she had announced that she had to get ready for the dance.
I looked myself over in the mirror once more before heading downstairs.
Alex and I had agreed to meet at the door to the great hall. I took my mask with me, but didn't put it on just yet, thinking it would be very difficult for Alex to find me in the sea of masked people.
I needn't have bothered. She was already in the entrance hall when I got there. 'You look beautiful' I told her, as I took her hand and brushed my lips over her knuckles, like I had seen others do before. She smiled at me, and winked 'You don't clean up too bad yourself Mr. Snape'. We walked into the great hall, where the band was already playing soft music.
Alex quickly found Lily, who was, to my great dismay, James Potter's date. As usual Potter was flanked by his wingman Black, who seemed to have no date at all, and was completely fine with that by the looks of it.
When I got back with drinks, Black had gone, and Alex was talking animatedly with Potter and Lily.
As the band started a waltz, Potter asked Lily to dance. Alex looked at me expectantly. 'I'm a lousy dancer' I told her honestly. She got up and held out her hand for me. 'then it's a good thing I know how to dance' she said, dragging me towards the dance floor. When she put my hand on her waist, I looked down at her. 'Keep your eyes on mine' she said smiling. I couldn't help but return her smile. She led me trough the dance without seeming to do so. When the song was over we got back to our table, where Regulus was sitting alone, looking at the dancers. 'I thought you couldn't dance?' he asked me, winking. 'I can't, but it would seem Alex can.' I told him. He laughed 'is there anything she can't do?' he asked me. I shook my head. 'So how did it go with your parents?' I asked him, curiously. 'Just like I expected, she won my mother over in record time, and before we started dessert, her political insights made my father fond of her.' he told me. As the band started the next song, Regulus asked me 'can I borrow your date for this dance?' I nodded at Alex 'you'll have to ask her yourself.'
'Do you mind?' Alex asked me when Regulus held his hand out for her. I shook my head. I had never minded Regulus, I knew he saw Alex like a sister. There would never be anything romantic between them. Also, I had a nagging suspicion that Regulus was gay. I had never confronted him about it, and I never would, if he wanted to talk about it, he would tell me.
'Not jealous of him then?' The seat next to me was filled again, this time it was Black. I had no idea what he was doing here, or why he was making small talk with me. 'What do you want Black?' I asked him, not willing to put up with him. 'I was just wondering why you aren't jealous of my brother touching her?' I looked over at them again, Alex was laughing at something Regulus had said. 'He's not in love with her, so he's no competition, you are.' I explained. 'How are you so sure he's not in love with her?' he wanted to know. I had no idea where this was going. I didn't want to share my suspicions about Regulus with his brother, so I got up, and walked over to the bar for another drink.
Regulus joined me soon after 'Alex just went outside for some air, she asked to tell you.' I nodded, and made my way to the rose garden outside. I had just made it outside when my vision blurred, and I felt my heart rate rise. I also heard someone screaming. When my vision returned, Black was at my side again 'Where is she?' he asked. I shook my head, and we both took of towards the sound of the screams.

AN: One more and I made the challenge I set myself today!
