“You know, I think someone might be trying to kill you.” Matt said as he and Hermione walked to Hogsmeade.
“I hate to admit it, but you may be right. But why me?” Hermione asked.
“Well, is there no one you can think of that would want to off you?” Matt asked as they window shopped at the various stores.
“No! I mean the war is over. Most of the Death Eaters who were after us are all either imprisoned or dead.”
“What about, you know, him?” Matt asked.
“Who?”
“You know, the, uh, ex?”
“Ronald? Oh well…I mean we’re not on speaking terms, I don’t think he would want to go that far…” Hermione wondered if Ron was even up to the task of capturing a dragon’s flame and encasing it in a spell that would slowly cause a glass egg to rupture shortly after it was given to her.
“But his brother, Charlie, doesn’t he work with dragons? I thought I read an article about the entire family visiting Egypt about five or six years ago and they mentioned briefly what everyone who wasn’t at school was doing.” Matt said.
“Well, yes that’s true. But I don’t think Charlie would send Ronald dragon’s flame if he knew he was going to attack me, of all people, with it. We just don’t have enough to go on.” Hermione said.
“Well, you’re right there. We don’t have enough information. Pansy’s not exactly either of our biggest fans, but I don’t see how she’d get dragon flames inside the school, either. Least of all without someone noticing.” Matt said eliminating someone else from their suspect list.
They wandered the village for some time, eventually stopping at the Three Broomsticks to get some refreshments. Matt bought them two Butterbeers with ginger as he wanted to try her version of the drink. The couple sat and talked about their lives, sharing stories of their previous adventures.
“You actually wrestled a Venomous Tentacula?” Hermione asked, shocked.
“Well, it was a mutant version of the plant. Joe Pachi, one of the other students in my year, had been feeding it a mix of regular food and some special chemicals that drastically altered it. Think Little Shop of Horrors.” Matt replied. “Unfortunately, Cass, David and I had to bring down the greenhouse on top of it to try and kill it. And when that didn’t fully do it, we then had to use a really bad combination of herbicide potions and fire to kill it.”
“What do you mean, ‘really bad combination’?” Hermione looked at him, amused.
“Uh well, you see, it had some additional side effects…”
“Such as?”
“Well, it, uh grew. And we kind of went from ‘We killed it’! To ‘Oh God, oh God, we’re all gonna die’ finally finishing on… it exploding. It somehow missed me, but next time you see Cass, just tell her green’s really her color.” Hermione gave Matt a look after that statement that said, ‘If I do that I’ll get jinxed into next week and I’ll take you with me.’ Matt simply replied with a toothy smile.
“Ginny was saying I should have you show me the infamous Shrieking Shack.” Matt said as they exited the Three Broomsticks.
“Sure.” Hermione said with a smile and took Matt by the hand, leading him through the village. He smiled and was content to hold her hand, the surprisingly intimate gesture did not go unnoticed, and Matt turned a little red.
Once they arrived at the building, Matt whistled.
“The most severely haunted building in Britain.” He observed from the fence line some distance from the shack itself.
“It’s not really haunted, you know.” Hermione said.
“Oh? How do you know?” he asked with genuine curiosity. Hermione grinned and launched into an explanation of how she, Harry and Ron had discovered the true origins of the Shrieking Shack during their third year at Hogwarts.
“Wait, so it was really just a werewolf safe house?” he asked.
“I’m afraid so. But Dumbledore fueled the rumors to keep Professor Lupin safe…” there was a sad tone to her voice now. Matt put his hand on her arm and gently rubbed it to comfort her.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered. “He sounds like he was a great teacher.”
“He was.” Hermione said with a smile. Matt moved closer and put his arm around her shoulders and she instinctively leaned into him.
“So, what else did you get up to in your third year, beyond taking way more classes than you possibly could have? I’m still a little fuzzy on how you pulled that off.” Matt inquired. Hermione bit her lip before explaining about her time turner and how she and Harry used it to save Buckbeak and Sirius Black.
“You actually got to travel back in time?! I’m so jealous!” Matt said and gave her a playful nudge.
“It’s not as much fun as you’d think. I had to be incredibly careful to make sure I didn’t run into myself or accidentally change something. It was very stressful.” Hermione said.
“I’ll bet; it sounds like you had a real trial by fire year.”
“No, that was probably fifth year, literally.” Hermione looked down at her chest.
“What happened fifth year?” Matt asked.
“Um, not right now, ok?” Hermione asked, feeling suddenly very vulnerable.
“Sure thing.” Matt put a comforting arm around her again.
“Do you want to get a bit closer, to the shack, I mean?” she asked, a feeling of déjà vu coming over her.
“Yeah, I’d like that.” Matt said and the pair slipped around the fence and walked up to the shack itself. A chilly wind blew, and Hermione moved in close to Matt for warmth. She looked up into his eyes again and took a deep breath. She needed to know, finally, and now was the time to ask.
“Matthew, I need to ask you something.” Hermione began. Matt felt butterflies in stomach as it clenched. She was close to him, just like in the corridor the week prior and she was using his full first name, a sign of seriousness.
“Anything.” Matt said with a consenting nod.
“What are your feelings towards me?” she asked quietly, so only he would hear. Even though there was no one around it was an intimate conversation all the same.
“My feelings towards you?” Matt repeated and Hermione nodded. He swallowed and took a breath to steady himself. “Hermione, I’ve liked you ever since that day I met you outside the Great Hall. Sitting on the steps with you, you were the first real friend I had made since I woke up in a very distant place. I knew I liked you, and liked you, liked you. You know? You’re insanely smart, logical and an amazing friend. So, you’re like a ten out of ten and that’s before I mention how beautiful you are on the outside, too. Packaging matches the personality.” He mentally congratulated himself. He had successfully told her how he felt about her and did not completely screw it up, a first for him.
“Oh, Matt.” Hermione said and flung her arms around his neck and hugged him.
“I suppose I ought to ask you how you feel about me?” Matt half stated, half asked. Hermione knew it was her turn, and she had been wanting to get this out in the open for a while.
“Well, you’re incredibly kind and extremely sweet. You make me laugh, which is rare. You’re not mean except when someone threatens one of your friends. And I really love all that about you. You’re not like anyone I’ve met before, you’re different in a good way. Not to mention, you are very handsome. And I think I like you, like you too.” Hermione said blushing furiously.
“Hey Hermione?” Matt began,
“Yes?”
“I’d like to be more than friends if you’d want to be more than friends?” he asked, finishing his thought.
“Are you-are you asking me out?” Hermione knew it was inevitable.
“I am. Hermione Granger, would you be my girlfriend?” Matt asked and even though they shared mutual feelings for one another, rejection was still possible; so, Matt braced himself if she decided to reject him.
“Yes.” Came her reply. Matt grinned ear to ear and she beamed at him right back.
“Would it be ok if I kissed you?’
“Yes.” She replied and leaned up. Matt leaned down and their lips touched. Their arms wrapped around each other, and their kiss deepened. They stayed like that for some time, holding one another and enjoying each other’s company until Matt had to get her back for her party.
The freshly minted couple returned to the castle with just enough time to get to the Room of Requirement. Matt stopped at the doors of the castle to put his plan into action. He stooped down, pretending to tie his shoe, so Hermione took a step or two ahead of him. Just as she turned back towards him, Matt popped up with a handkerchief and wrapped it around her eyes.
“Matt! What are you doing?!” Hermione asked, confused. He did not immediately respond as he grabbed her shoulders and spun her around on the spot, once or twice clockwise then the opposite as she giggled at his antics.
“You’ll see.” He said cryptically before running his hands down her arms. He gently took Hermione’s hands in his own and stepped backwards. “You’ll have to trust me on this, ok? It’s a surprise.”
“Ok?!” Hermione had little choice but to agree. He led her through the castle, being sure not to let her trip and fall. He even remembered the trick steps on the staircases, helping her jump it so she did not fall through and get stuck or injured. The last thing Matt wanted was to take her to the Hospital Wing before her party.
They arrived on the seventh floor with just a few moments to spare. Matt was careful to not let go of her hands yet, knowing she would pull the blind fold off at the first chance she would get. He was excited to see her reaction and it had been nice leading her through the castle while holding her hands. Hermione had caught that he was gently caressing the back of her hand every so often as well. It was a small comforting gesture, and she had to admit, it was nice.
“Where are we?” Hermione asked, feeling very confused.
“You’ll see in a minute. I promise.” Matt replied, he had double backed on their trek here once or twice just to be certain that her sense of direction would be muddled. He did not want to risk her knowing where she was going and figuring out his plan too soon. He finally let go of his new girlfriend’s hand and opened the door to the room. Matt then returned his hands to her shoulders and gently pressed her forward.
Once Hermione was fully in the room, Matt having been making gestures to everyone to be quiet as they walked in, Matt closed the door behind him.
“Ok, go head take off the blind fold!” he said to her. Hermione reached up and slid the cloth off her face and gasped as all the people in the room shouted “Surprise!”
Hermione gaped in shock at all the people there. Harry, Ginny, Neville, Luna, Ernie, Hannah, even Draco made an appearance. In the middle of the room was a large table with a variety of foods and off to one side was a smaller table with a large cake on it, with candles.
“Oh, you all remembered!” Hermione said, beaming and her eyes a little watery.
“Well, once Matt figured it out, he wouldn’t let us forget.” Neville said with a smile.
“Do you want to eat?” Matt asked Hermione. The scent of the food wafting through the room prompted a response from Hermione’s stomach. They had been out all afternoon and only had breakfast and some butterbeers on their stomachs.
“That would be lovely.” Hermione said with a slight blush. Matt grinned and took her by the hand to the table. Everyone followed suit as they sat down to eat and talk. The group laughed as they shared stories, mostly of how Hermione would often save Harry from disaster with her quick thinking and logical nature.
“If it hadn’t been for Hermione, I couldn’t have gotten through the Triwizard Tournament.” Harry said, crediting Hermione.
“Oh, Harry! You’d have been just fine.” she said with a blush.
“No, seriously Hermione, you really were there for me when no one else was. If you hadn’t helped me with the summoning charm, I couldn’t have gotten past that first task.” Harry insisted.
“Alright, I guess I did help, didn’t I?” Hermione smiled.
“Hear, hear!” chorused Harry and the others. Hermione was not used to being the center of attention like this, but she found she was ok with it, since it was her birthday.
After everyone was quite full, Matt pushed over a small table laden with gifts. Harry had gotten her a new quill set and matching bag to carry everything in. Luna had gotten her a pair of earrings, shaped like a flower in a pretty shade of blue. Ginny got her a very pretty red jeweled necklace, like one she had lost when hunting for Horcruxes with Harry and Ron. Neville had gotten her a new scarf, which shifted between the various Hogwarts house colors and emblazoned with the school’s seal.
“This last one is from me.” Matt said as he handed Hermione his gift. She looked up at him in confusion as she opened it. It was a revised and updated edition of Hogwarts: A History. She quickly thumbed through the book and was shocked to see that House elves were now included and that not only was Harry Potter mentioned, but she herself was as well.
“How did you get this?” Hermione asked.
“I had to pull a few strings, it’s technically not out yet. It’s an advance copy. I even got the person doing the revision to sign it.” Matt replied grinning. Hermione turned to the cover and sure enough the revising author had indeed signed it specifically for her.
“Oh Matt!” she exclaimed and leapt into his arms, not holding back any, she kissed him right on the lips. He was all too happy to return the affection before they realized everyone was watching them.
“So, you two are finally together?” Harry asked, smirking. Ginny was grinning ear to ear and even Neville and Draco were smiling.
“Oh, uh, well, yes, you see…” Hermione said blushing sheepishly.
“It’s official as of today.” Matt finished for her, taking her hand in his. There was a round of applause for them, leaving the couple blushing.
After the cake and the party was over Matt and Hermione slowly made their way back to Gryffindor tower.
“Thank you.” Hermione said as they climbed back through the portrait.
“For what?” Matt asked.
“For the best birthday I’ve ever had here.” her reply was quiet and sweet.
“You’re very welcome.” Matt said and leaned down to kiss her. Hermione was happy to respond, and they shared several more kisses before bidding each other goodnight and slipping off to their beds.
