The fifth year Hufflepuff/Ravenclaw class was grating hard on Severus’ nerves. The dunderheads just would not absorb the fact that dragon scales are different than dragon skin, especially in potions. The mistaking use of one for the other could render cataclysmic results. Severus sat brooding over their latest essays while said dunderheads were trying not to melt any more cauldrons. Two students had already gone to the hospital wing because they were smart enough to try to catch the molten pewter before it hit the floor, with their bare hands, nonetheless.
A quiet hissing sound was irritating the potion master’s sensitive ears. He looked up sharply to see the face of Andrew Haskins blanch and his eyes growing wide. Just what Severus suspected – cauldron number three. “Mr. Haskins, at least you learned something from the other two that I have sent to Madam Pomfrey, you didn’t try to catch it. Detention tonight with…” Severus thought hard about this. He wanted to spend time with Hermione. They were getting very close in their research for Lupin and Hermione’s first treatment for her eyes was to be this evening. “…with Filch, and clean that mess before you fall in it!” he snapped, satisfied with himself that he didn’t have to change his plans for the evening. He didn’t feel like spending his evening in the company of this year’s Neville Longbottom. No, Andrew Haskins was more like the equivalent to three Longbottoms. Too bad, he didn’t have a partner such as the Gryffindor had; Andrew’s partner, one Miss Newcomb was not much better than Andrew himself.
Severus lowered his head trying to concentrate on the essays once more, his red quill making this particular essay bloodier than the Bloody Baron. A small noise came from a door at the side of the classroom, followed by a cheerful yelp. Severus raised his head toward the door, as did the rest of the class. He knew that Hermione was working in the lab, but he couldn’t expose his feelings of excitement or intrigue in front of the class, they would most assuredly think that hell had frozen over.
Not a second after Severus looked at the door, a disheveled Hermione burst through it, chanting, “I did it! I did it!”
“Miss Granger,” he hissed. “I surely hope that whatever you did, gives you ample reasoning as to why you disrupted my class.” His voice was just how Hermione remembered it from when she was a student, and honestly it was turning her on. She knew that Severus thought he had to keep up his bastard demeanor for the students to respect him. Little did he know, that it wasn’t respect he was getting, it was utter fear.
“I apologize Sev… Professor Snape. I just thought you would like to know that I think I have completed our research.” She couldn’t hide the sound of pure joy in her voice or the bright smile that graced her face.
If any of the students would have been looking at their professor, they would have seen the same smile on his own. “Class dismissed. Miss Fredricks please oversee the cleanup. I hope that you are all gone when I return,” he said with a scowl as he stood from his desk and swept from the room into the lab.
Once the door closed behind him, he grabbed Hermione by the waist and twirled her around the room. “You really think you did it?” She nodded and he put her down gently. “How? What did you do differently? And what was the noise that I heard?”
Hermione found her seat and plopped herself in it facing Severus. “Remember the explosion?” She gestured to her eyes.
“Honestly…”he sounded exasperated.
“Well, I had added the dragon fang at the wrong time. Once I found the correct timing and added the dragon fang, I was lost as to which ingredient would generate the blood bonding. Then this morning it hit me – a 2:1 ratio of dragon’s blood and unicorn blood. Such a combination would bind the potion to the infected blood of the werewolf. Add two drops of phoenix tears and Viola!” She gestured to the simmering cauldron in front of her. Severus looked into the bubbling brew. It was the color that they had predicted. It was the assumed consistency. He was truly amazed by this woman. To think that she was able to do all of this without the use of her eyes was astonishing.
“Have you tested it?” he asked, trying to hide his own excitement, but failing miserably.
“That is why I interrupted your class. I need you to look in the microscope and tell me what you see. I have a vile of Remus’ blood saved in a stasis spell on the shelf.” Severus got up from the stool he had propped himself on and grabbed said vile.
“I have it, now what?”
“Put a few drops on the slide and take a look.” He did as she instructed. Severus was never one for use of Muggle instruments. Hermione had introduced him to certain chemistry type tools and he was still learning about them. He had found that the microscope was one of the easier to use and understand.
He looked through the lens and saw what looked like red discs surrounded by ugly spiky blobs. “What am I looking at?”
“The red discs are the red blood cells and the porcupine looking things are the wolf cells.” Severus harrumphed in acknowledgement. “Now take a drop of the potion and add it to the blood.”
Severus slowly added a drop of the potion and watched through the lens. “Holy shit, Hermione! You did it!” He watched as the spiky wolf cells shrank and rapidly dissolved in front of his eyes. “Have you told Remus?”
“Not yet, I thought you might want to be there when I do. But, I want to make sure this is stable. I want to check it in a few hours to make sure that the blood doesn’t coagulate or break down on its own.”
Severus walked over to the glowing woman and wrapped his arms tightly around her. He couldn’t express the love and pride he felt at that very moment. He always knew that she would be able to cure Remus, but under the circumstances, he had his doubts that it would have come this quickly. He placed a small kiss on the top of head and she snuggled closer into his embrace. It had been a week since they told each other they loved them, but Severus was still reveling in every little smile, embrace, kiss. He thanked the gods over and over for giving him another second chance at something.
Her voice broke the silent emotional exchange, “Do you have the rest of the morning free?”
“Hm-hmm.” He didn’t want to break the hug and kept his face buried in her hair.
“Can we go for a walk?”
“I wish we could, love, but the rain seems to have different plans,” Severus said softly. Hermione had been in the dungeons since before breakfast. He had left her rooms after waking up and didn’t see her again until he found her hunched over her research in the lab, accompanied by Winky who had looked nervous as she handled the small vials of ingredients. “Are you ready for tonight?” he asked as he ran his fingers through her long hair.
“As ready as I’ll ever be. Do you really think it will work?”
“I would bet all the galleons in Gringotts.” He really did seem sure of himself.
“Let’s not go that far. I want it to work, but I’m scared. What if it doesn’t work? What if it makes it worse?”
He placed another kiss on her head and gently placed his hands on her cheeks, making her face him. “Hermione, trust me.”
