Chapter 25
--
Raithos and Draco dressed in their very best the next day, black
tailored pants, silk shirts, velvet robes, and dragonhide boots. Hair pulled back in elegant ponytails,
silver clasps and jewelry. Today was a
very special day. Not only was it the
day Albus Dumbledore’s sentencing was to be carried out, it was the day Lord
Voldemort was making his first public appearance since his original reign.
p>
Raithos decided it was one of the happiest days of his
life. Now that his father had control
of the ministry and would have control of Hogwarts by the end of the day, there
wasn’t a need to remain in hiding. Both
he and Raithos would have extensive bodyguards with them all day, just in case.
Just after lunch, Raithos and Draco joined their fathers in
the entry hall of Riddle Mansion. The
Death Eaters acting as bodyguards for the day were there as well.
“Pops, you are looking splendid today,” Raithos said, as his
father came into view.
Snape had finally perfected the potion to fully restore his
father’s body. Gone was the white
haired, skeletal figure, and in its place was a regal man, with salt and pepper
hair. The red eyes remained, however.
“Well, now I see where my unruly hair really comes
from,” Raithos quipped with a smile.
The Death Eaters present broke intointo chuckles at that
statement.
Lord Voldemort cracked a smile at his son. “Yes, well, your mother never had any
complaints.”
Draco stepped up to the two. “Just for the record, neither have I,” he said, causing another
round of laughter.
--
The group portkeyed to Azkaban Prison, where they met up
with Minister Zabini and the wardens.
After exchanging pleasantries, Albus Dumbledore was brought before
them. The blue magic-binding haze was
still wrapped around him.
Raithos stepped up to the former Headmaster and looked him
in the eyes.
“Stop struggling, Albus. You cannot break the bind; I am much too powerful. It is no use wasting what little energy your
broken body has left to fight it, he said.
Dumbledore looked at him wearily.
“Shall we continue, Minister?” Raithos askeagerager to
witness the final fall of the one who had brought him such grief.
Minister Zabini stepped up.
“Yes. Let us get this over
with,” he said, gesturing to the Death Eaters.
Two of them stepped up and grabbed Dumbledore by the arms, leading him
deeper into the prison. The group
followed them, with Raithos and Draco just in front of Lord Voldemort and
Lucius. The four of them were surrounded
by Death Eaters.
The walk through the prison was long and dark. The air grew colder as they went, passing
cell after cell. One could tell who the
new prisoners were; they were the only ones who looked even the smallest bit
human. The others were shells, empty
vessels that had once contained life, intelligence, and awareness.
Raithos momentarily wondered how long it took before that
awareness disappeared, and whether or not Ron and the Weasleys had reached that
point. He hoped they hadn’t, not quite
yet.
The entourage finally stopped, in the middle of a large
corridor, lined on both sides with cells.
The wardens approached seven cells along the wall and yelled at the
prisoners inside to get up. Seven red
heads appeared at the doors, varying levels of consciousness and intelligence
apparent in their eyes and expressions.
There was recognition in all but two faces as gazes fell on Raithos and
Draco. Percy and Arthur were
zombies. They had fared the worst of
their family members.
Ginny and Ron seemed to be the most aware of what was going
on around them. They both gasped when
their eyes fell on Dudoredore’s glowing form.
However, while Ron looked resigned, Ginny looked hopeful. She smiled slightly and began murmuring
something unintelligible.
When their eyes fell on Lord Voldemort, they both shrank
back in fear. The red eyes were
unmistakable. Much like the green eyes
of his son. A person could find those
eyes on an animal and still know who it actually was.
Minister Zabini stepped up in front of the gathered crowd to
address the prisoners.
“My Lords wish for you seven to witness this event, the
destruction of your leader. But
before the fun begins they have a little something to show you. Lucius, if you would.”
The Weasleys, except Arthur and Percy, could not seem to
look away from the image in front of them as Lucius again performed the
recording spell. Ron’s already pitiful
expression grew even more miserable as he watched. The rest of the family looked on in shocked disbelief. Ginny kept shaking her head ‘no’, refusing
to believe the recounting of events playing before her.
As the images died away, Minister Zabini motioned towards
two of the wardens. They stepped
forward, wands ready. As they opened
their mouths to begin the curse that would rid Dumbledore of his magic, Raithos
stepped forward and said, “Stop.”
He stepped up to his former Headmaster, inwardly cringing at
the looks of undying hope on the faces of the Weasleys behind the old man.
He leaned in close, almost nose to nose with
Dumbledore.
“I’ve only one last thing to say to you, sir. Rule number one hundred and fifty five of
the Evil Overlord List: If I know of
any heroes in the land, I will not under any circumstance kill their mentors,
teachers, and/or best friends (1).
That includes parental figures.
You really should have done your homework.”
Raithos stepped back and motioned again towards the
wardens. The light that had sparked in
the eyes of the red-heads died out once again.
“Exinanio!”
A silver light began to drain out of Dumbledore’s hands,
fading into the air as it left his body.
He was still attempting to fight the bind, in a last ditch effort to
safe his magic. He knew that without
it, he was just an old man, with no chance at escape. He needed his magic for that.
>
Dumbledore couldn’t believe what was happening to him. Up until this moment he’d been certain
someone, anyone would step in on his behalf. He was a hero! He’d
defeated Grindewald, and was the leader in the fight against Voldemort. Someone should have remained loyal. He looked out at the Death Eaters gathered
around their lord and his son. He
spotted Severus among them.
“Severus! Thank god
you are here! Help me Severus, before
they complete the drain!” Dumbledore cried to his friend, his confidant.
Snape stepped forward to stand behind Raithos and Draco, who
were smiling slightly. He placed a hand
on each of their shoulders, and sneered at the old man before them.
“You old fool. I was
never on your side. You are the
one I’ve been spying on all these years!
I have never betrayed my Lords, and I do not intend to start now. Where did you think the images for the
recording spell came from? Who else did
you tell your story to? No one.”

Dumbledore fell to his knees, the meaning of the words rushing
over him. His friend, the one who’d
helped him these past months, had been the cause of his downfall.
The silver light thinned out, and finally ended. Albus Dumbledore, one of the most powerful
wizards of the age, was magicless. A
mere squib.
Raithos waved a hand and finally released the magic binding
spell. There was no reason for it
now. As the blue haze disappeared,
Dumbledoresed sed his hand and pointed it at Raithos and his father. He shouted the words to the killing curse.
When nothing happened, he dropped his hands and hung his
head. He remained there, motionless, as
the dementors entered the corridor.
Ginny and Molly Weasley began screaming and crying. The Death Eaters looked on expectantly. Lord Voldemort stood next to his son with a
smile on his face.
“I have been waiting for this for such a long time,” he
said. “Now you wilt wht what you truly
deserve, Albus Dumbledore.”
--
Ron Weasley surveyed the scene playing out before him. He’d watched the images played with the
spell from Malfoy. He’d watched as the
magic was drained from his mentor. And
now he was going to watch as the dementors took his soul.
He was reeling from the magnitude of information he’d
received in the past few minutes.
Dumbledore had been responsible for creating the Dark Lord. He’d also used Harry Potter, a poor young
child, to further his own aims. Albus
Dumbledore was the evil one in this situation, and the revelation almost caused
his legs to give out. They’d all been
so wrong, and now it was too late.
Ron watched as the dementors crowdrounround the broken old
man before him. He looked away as one
of them bent down to him; he still couldn’t bear to watch. He was reminded of his two brothers, who had
been kissed just a few weeks ago. It
seemed so much longer. He looked back
as applause rang out among the Death Eaters.
Minister Zabini was shaking people’s hands and bowing to You-Know-Who
and his son. The two Malfoys stood
proudly behind them. The wardens
carried Dumbledore down the corridor, and Ron idly wondered what they did to
people who’d been kissed. You heard all
about what happened when someone was kissed, but no one ever talked about what
went on after.
He could hear Ginny crying in her cell. It was quite a change from the screams that
he heard most days. He wondered what
she saw when the dementors were around.
His own visions were horrible.
Everyday he tried to get up the courage to kill himself; it was what he
deserved after all. He was such a
monster. He’d followed a monster.
Ron’s train of thought was broken as Raithos approached his
cell with Draco. They looked in, smirks
on their faces.
“Hello, Ronald. I do
hope they are treating you right in this fine establishment,” Raithos
began. Draco continued to smirk as he moved
behind Raithos, winding arms around his waist and resting his chin on his
shoulder. “I suppose you are quite
regretting your decisions earlier this year,’ Raithos continued. “What a shame you couldn’t see things for
what they truly were. You are a pureblood,
you know, and deserved so much more than this.
Alas, I cannot blame myself for the shortcomings of others.”
Ron stared at the two young men before him, searching their
eyes for any kind of sympathy.
“Please, I’ll do anything…just help me. I was wrong, so very wrong. I know that now. Anything…please,” he babbled, voice raspy from the screaming he
did at night, when the nightmares came.
Raithos seemed to ponder the thought for a moment. “Anything, Ronald? What if I told you that I would get you out of here, accept you
into my ranks, if you would kill off the remaining members of your family? Would you do that for me?”
His mother and Bill, who were in the cells next to his,
began shouting at him not to listen, to remember whom he was talking to. It seemed that the rest of his family
couldn’t get over their past ideas on right and wrong, who was evil and who was
light.
< !su !supportEmptyParas]>
Ron looked up and met Raithos’ eyes.
“Yes,” he whispered.
His mother screamed, and Bill and Charlie broke down. Raithos looked at him with an evil glint in
his eyes, and leaned in close.
“Too bad I wasn’t serious, isn’t it?” he asked, before
turning and walking away. Draco smirked
at him once again before following.
Ron collapsed onto the floor. His mother and brothers were still screaming and crying at him,
asking him how he could betray them like that.
The dementors crowded around his cell, and the visions came back. This time, however, there was a new
one. A vision of him with a murderous
look in his eyes, desperate for the chance to be free, willing to sacrifice his
own flesh and blood for his freedom.
He was truly a monster.
--
Later that day, a meeting of the governors was held to
address the issue of appointing a new Headmaster for Hogwarts. Lucius was there to ensure Raithos’ choice
was nominated. He was also to ensure
the governors knew whom it was that had chosen the nomination.
o:p>
Twenty minutes later, Severus Snape was elected Headmaster
of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
--
“I still can’t believe it.”
“I know, Minerva, it was a shock to me as well,” Severus
Snape said gently.
The members of the Order of the Phoenix were in the
Headmaster’s office at Hogwarts. For
over a half an hour they’d been discussing Albus Dumbledore. They were all outraged at his actions over
the past few decades, and felt horribly betrayed by the man they’d been ready
to follow even to their deaths. Now,
they were at a loss as to what to do.
“Severus, if I may,” Remus interrupteietlietly. s"> He knew he was still trusted amongst the
members of the order, and he still cared greatly for most of them.
Snape nodded, and Remus stood to move to the center of the
room.
“I know everything you’ve found out and seen in the last
twenty four hours is very overwhelming.
I feel the same way. It hurts to
know that someone we trusted so much, and for so long, was responsible for such
horrific acts. I cannot decide what the
rest of you will do, but I know what I believe at this moment.
“In the past few months I have gotten to know Raithos
relatively well. Severus knows him even
better, and he knows You-Know-Who and the Malfoys as well. They aren’t the horrible people we’ve been
led to believe. Yes, You-Know-Who has
done some tble ble things in the past, but all of them were due to Dumbledore’s
manipulations. Once he had his son back
in his life, he changed. There hasn’t
been a massacre in months.
“I know there have been more killings, but if you really
look at it, they were all in self-defense.
What else were they to do? Allow
Dumbledore to send people to kill them?
Ruin them? Anyone would have
done the same. This may come as a shock
to some, but I am fully prepared to ally myself with Raithos. There are going to be many changes to our
world, many of them good, and many of them because of him. They aren’t the evil people we’ve been
to
to believe.”
Throughout Remus’ speech the Order members had been
silent. Feelings of disbelief and anger
had turned into skepticism and curiosity.
The werewold a d a few good points.
“I know all of you need time to think about what it is you
want to do. I urge you to look at the
facts here, and base your decisions on that, not on misplaced loyalties. Severus and I will both be here for you if
you need to talk,” Remus finished.
After a few more moments of silence, people began to leave. Most were still lost in thought.
Remus walked over to where Snape was sitting at the
Headmaster’s desk.
“So it’s over,” he said quietly.
Snape was silent for a moment. “Not quite. There will
still be resistance to all of this. A
society doesn’t accept such a massive change of power without a little bit of a
fight. My Lords are taking steps to
ensure as quiet a transition as possible, but it will be hard.”
Remus took Snape’s hand in his own, more to comfort himself
than the other man. “What plans do they
have?”
Snape sighed and relaxed in his chair. “Mostly plans to change the public’s opinion
of them. The people have been told such
horror stories about the two that some believe they are true monsters, not even
human anymore. There are public
appearances scheduled, along with picture spreads and articles in the media, I
believe a New Years gala celebration is even in the works. True, the two of them are still as ruthless
and cunnas cas can be, but the public needn’t know the extent of that. The more normal they appear in public, the
more easily the public will accept them as such.”
“Do you think it will work?”
“Yes. The world is
as good as theirs.”
