Ancient Prophecies Brought to the Present
An early August afternoon found James Potter strolling lazily across the lawn of Hogwarts with a small bundle cradled in his arms. He headed towards a small hut near the edge of the woods. As he approached, a large man stepped out through the door. “Hello James, what brings you here?” Hagrid grinned at him.
“Not much,” James grinned back. “Just making the rounds to everyone who wants to see the baby.”
“Can I hold him?”
James laughed softly. “If only I had a sickle for every time someone has asked me that these past few days… What is it with people and babies?”
“I don’t know.” Hagrid mumbled as he frowned and looked at the ground.
James smiled and shook his head. “Of course you can hold him Hagrid. Just be careful.”
“Of course!” the giant’s face lit up. “You know I’ll be careful.”
James handed the tiny baby over, helping the larger man position his hands to hold the tiny bundle. James couldn’t help but laugh at the site of such a large man trying to hold something so small.
“Isn’t he cute,” Hagrid cooed at young Harry.
“Only the most adorable baby ever born, next to me of course,” James grinned as he slipped his shirt off. “Bloody hell it’s hot.”
It was then that the giant noticed the bandage on the small of James’ back just under his dragon tattoo. “Did you get hurt?” he asked curiously.
“Huh? Oh, no…” James reached behind him to slowly pull off the bandage revealing his newborn son’s full name and birthday in black ink. “I just got it done this morning. I still need to go pick up the salve for it.”
“Oh,” Hagrid nodded, not knowing quite what to make of the new addition. “It’s nice that you did that.”
James caught movement out of the corner of his eye and turned to see what it was. He saw a wizard dressed in Lilac robes with short wavy hair and a stupid grin on his face that showed off his dazzling white teeth. He was being followed by a group of witches, one of them holding a notepad and franticly writing things down. “Who is that?” James asked in mild curiosity.
“Oh, him,” Hagrid growled. “That’s Gilderoy Lockhart.”
“And he would be?”
“He’s just some bloke that’s getting famous from selling books. He’s been hanging around here while he writes another one. It looks like he’s being interviewed or something.”
James tilted his head and studied the man. “Those women seem to be rather infatuated with him.”
“Yeah, we’ve been having a lot of women trying to get a glimpse of him all summer. It’s getting on my nerves.”
“And nobody says anything about him hanging around here?” James asked with a raised eyebrow.
“No. The Ministry thinks that we should be honored to have him.”
James couldn’t help but laugh. “He doesn’t seem like anything all that special to me. But maybe…” A Cheshire grin appeared on his face.
“What are you planning to do?” Hagrid asked, sounding a little worried.
“You’ll see…” James whistled and a house elf appeared by his side.
“Master called?” she squeaked.
James nodded and carefully took his son from the giant’s arms and handed him to the elf. “Mitsy, you take care of Harry for a bit. He needs fed soon, and probably a diaper change wouldn’t hurt. I’ll be back in a bit. I’m feeling an evil streak coming on.”
The house elf nodded and disappeared with the baby clutched tightly in her arms. James silently moved towards the crowd on the lawn like a predator stalking its prey. He stopped only a few feet away and summoned a radio to appear in his hand. He set it on the ground and turned it on just loud enough for the group to hear. Then he started dancing to the music, swaying seductively from side to side.
Of course it wasn’t long until he was noticed. Gilderoy was in mid sentence when the witch interviewing him looked up from her notebook. “Who is that?” she asked with a hungry look in her eyes.
Gilderoy looked up at the wizard dancing only a few feet away from them with an annoyed expression. “I have no idea,” he answered in his usual upbeat tone. “I’ve never seen him before in my life.”
The group moved over toward James. “Hello there,” the witch smiled at him.
James stopped dancing and put on his best innocent and charming smile, acting like this was the first he’d noticed the group. “Hello there.”
“Who are you?” Gilderoy blurted out impatiently. He hated it when anyone took the spotlight from him.
“I’m James Potter,” James answered, holding out his hand.
Gilderoy smiled and shook his hand. “Lovely to meet you. I’ve heard a great deal about you.”
“All good I hope.” James grinned innocently. Only his eyes revealed his true intentions.
The man shrugged. “Let’s just say that lucky for you even bad things are good publicity.”
James chuckled and shoved his hands in his pockets. “Lucky for me a bad reputation doesn’t really matter to me. So Mr. Lockhart, I hear that you’re writing another book.”
“Oh please, call me Gilderoy. And yes, I’m writing a book on how to get rid of household pests.”
“Really? Do tell.”
James listened quietly as the man droned on and on about his book. What James noticed that the others did not, was that he seemed to have no idea what he was talking about. He was just blowing a lot of hot air. But James let him continue on, all the while flirting shamelessly with the group of women around them. He was enjoying the fact that this man seemed to be desperately trying to get the focus back on him. But no matter what he did all eyes were on James’ well muscled body.
“I heard you and your wife just had a baby,” one of the women chimed in.
James nodded. “Yeah, he’s with my house elf being fed and changed.”
“That’s a shame,” Gilderoy jumped into the conversation. “I would’ve liked to see the little one.”
“I’m sure,” James mumbled under his breath.
“What was that?” the wavy haired wizard asked.
“Nothing…” James gave his best fake smile. “I was just clearing my throat.”
“Oh Mr. Potter, could we get a picture of you and Mr. Lockhart together?” the witch with the notebook asked excitedly. “I could put you into the article I’m writing.”
“No!” Gilderoy shouted suddenly. “Erm… What I meant to say was that I don’t think that Mr. Potter here really wants anything written about him. I mean from what I’ve heard about him he likes to be very private.”
James turned to the man and grinned evilly, then turned back to the group of witches around them. “What he said. I mean, why on earth would you want me in an article about him.”
“Well,” the witch nervously bit her lip. “Mr. Potter, you are very well known for your wide knowledge of the dark arts. I was thinking you could do a little critique of Mr. Lockhart’s book. It’s just an idea…”
James pretended to think about her proposal for a minute. “I suppose I could.”
“Great!” the witch squealed with delight. “So can you go over his book today, and then meet me here again tomorrow?”
“It would be my pleasure,” James flashed his charming smile.
With that the group of women bid their goodbyes and took off down the lawn toward the front gate. James waited until they were out of earshot and turned to a rather upset looking Gilderoy. “Glamour charm, am I right?” he asked with a raised eyebrow.
“What are you talking about?” Gilderoy asked nervously.
“I’m talking about the fact that you put some sort of glamour charm on yourself so that women would be infatuated with you. That way you could throw down any mindless drivel you want and have them eat it up.”
The man looked down at the grass with a defeated frown. “You’re going to tell everyone aren’t you?”
James shook his head with an amused grin. “No.”
Gilderoy shot his gaze up and looked at him in surprise. “You’re not? Not that I’m complaining, but why?”
“Because you stupid ass,” James laughed. “I’m quite content to sit and wait for the day when you fall flat on your face. And believe me, that day will come.”
“What are you going to do about my book? That reporter from Witch Weekly is going to expect something from you about it. Are you going to lie?”
James shrugged. “I’ll think of something to say by tomorrow.”
“Then why did you agree to do it?” Gilderoy asked confused.
“I just wanted to see you sweat,” James answered with a big grin before turning around to walk away.
He had only gone a few steps when Gilderoy pulled out his wand. He pointed it at James’ back and had just barely opened his mouth to utter the spell when James whirled around; throwing a white ball of light at him. The ball of light hit Gilderoy square in the chest, throwing him back a few feet. James quickly strode over toward him and put his foot on the man’s throat causing him to choke. “You’ve just answered my other question Mr. Lockhart,” he spoke sternly. “Oh, and try that again, and I just might have to kill you.”
James lifted his foot and stormed away, heading for the castle. He headed straight for Dumbledore’s office, finding Mitsy there with Harry. The headmaster had the week old baby on his lap. “Hello,” James greeted him cheerfully.
“Hello James,” Dumbledore replied. “I was wondering when you were going to bring Harry by to see me.”
“You know, nothing was preventing you from coming to see him during the past week.”
“James, that isn’t fair,” Dumbledore sighed as he stood from his desk. He moved over toward James and handed Harry back to him.
James pulled his son close to his chest. “I suppose it isn’t,” he admitted. “I shouldn’t hold things you did in the past against you. If I’m going to hold a grudge against you, it should be for things you’ve done in the present.”
The headmaster shook his head sadly. “I guess it’s a start. Anyway, if you’ll excuse me, I have business to attend to as usual.”
James walked down the marble staircase right behind Dumbledore. He said goodbye to the older wizard with a feint smile, then headed back outside. He walked towards Hagrid’s hut to say goodbye to him as well, but found it empty. He smiled down at Harry in his arms. “He’s probably doing something in the dark forest,” he spoke softly. “I haven’t been in there in years.”
He wasn’t sure why, but James started walking into the forest. He strolled down the narrow paths listening to the quiet of nature, but at the same time keeping an eye out for any threats. Hours later James found himself deep in the heart of the forest.
“Welcome again wise one,” he suddenly heard a voice from behind him.
He turned to see who it was and saw a centaur standing a few feet behind him. “Hello Jabez,” he greeted the creature.
The centaur approached to stand in front of James with a thoughtful look on his face. “The humans have long had a prophecy of their own...” he started speaking in a far away tone. “They say that England’s king will return when his people are in great need. These are dark times indeed, and here you stand before me wise one. Tell me, is the bundle you hold so protectively in your arms the young prince?”
James chuckled softly. “And they say centaurs aren’t very perceptive.”
“So it’s true then?” Jabez asked eagerly.
James grinned wickedly. “I’m not saying a word. You’ll just have to wait and see for yourself. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s lots more people I have to visit.”
Without another word James disappeared into thin air leaving the centaur alone gazing into empty space. Jabez stood there for a moment longer before turning to go back to the rest of his kind. “I will never understand that one,” he muttered to himself.
