Chapter 25 Upping the Points
When Sky opened Severus’ laboratory door, she found Albus still talking animatedly with Godric Gryffindor. Rowena and Helga were both fast asleep in their frames. Sal’s frame was empty.
“Erm excuse me. Are you ready to come for breakfast Headmaster? Hello Godric.”
Godric gave her a cheery smile and said ‘Hi’.
“Oh my goodness, Sky. What time is it?”
“Seven thirty, Headmaster. Have you slept?”
“No. No I haven’t. And please, do stop calling me Headmaster. My name is Albus.” Turning to Godric he said his goodbyes and walked into Severus’ study.
Sky closed the door and sat down to wait for Severus. “Did you enjoy talking to them …Albus?”
“I did indeed. Thank you so much for allowing me to invade your home for the night. I have had the most marvellous time. Though I think I have tired them out with my incessant questions.” Albus gave a big yawn that he tried to cover with his hand, but failed miserably.
“You look like you could do with some breakfast and a good sleep.”
“You know I think you are right. I intend to do just that. After all, I am the Headmaster so I can do as I please just this once.” He gave her a wink and left to go for breakfast. Severus entered the study soon after Albus left.
“I thought you were going to get the Headmaster?”
“I did. He’s gone to get some breakfast then he’s going to bed. He stayed up talking all night.
“That is a shame. I was hoping he would cover my classes today so I could spend the day with you. What will you do with yourself?”
“I’ll carry on with finding out who sent that letter about me. Where is it by the way? I’m sure I left it in the bedroom.”
“I removed it. Sky, you cannot work on it in Hogwarts, not with the magic you intend to use. You’ll have the Ministry come down on us like a ton of bricks.”
“Severus, what is this Ministry that you and Albus keep going on about?”
He raised an eyebrow slightly at her use of the Headmaster’s first name.
“The Ministry of Magic is the wizarding world’s government. The first hint of dark magic and they will be able to trace it here. You would be arrested.”
“I’ll take it in the wall and do it then. They’ve never turned up there.”
“It would not matter if they did. They could not get in; besides, it is not possible for them to detect any magic from inside the wall. Otherwise they would have been flooding the area before now. Ready for breakfast?”
“Are you kidding? I’m famished.”
She jumped up, opened the door and stepped through the teachers’ entrance into the Great Hall, Severus hot on her heels. Both had worked up a healthy appetite with the nights’ strenuous activities.
Quite a few of the staff were watching with great interest as the couple devoured large amounts of food. Albus though appeared to be falling asleep, his head nodding as his eyes drifted closed. Minerva kept nudging him to keep him awake.
“Albus, what on earth is wrong with you?”
“What? Oh. Nothing, I just had a bit of trouble sleeping last night. I shall catch up after breakfast.”
“Really Albus. What with you almost falling asleep in your breakfast and those two eating as if it’s the last meal they’re likely to have for a week. What is going on?”
She received no reply and had to give the Headmaster another poke, telling him to go to bed. Sky heard the conversation and sniggered to herself. Severus kicked her under the table as he glared at the students.
Sky kicked him back a bit harder and got up before he could retaliate.
“I’m going to do that little job we were talking about. I’ll see you later.” She grinned at him.
“How long do you think it will take you?”
“I dunno. Half an hour to set it up. Then another five minutes to work the spell. The result should be instant. Why?”
“I would like to see what you are going to do. I have a free period at eleven. Do you think you could wait for me?”
“Yeah if you want. See you at eleven.”
She walked through the door back into the study and realised she had nothing to do. She had a desk, parchment and quills, but no one to write. The Founders would all be tired so she couldn’t go talk to them. Severus was teaching classes for the next two hours, and she didn’t know what he’d done with her letter and book. Was it going to be like this every day? She wouldn’t be able to stand it if it was.
Hearing noises she poked her head out of the door, into the dungeon corridor. The students were heading for the potions classroom. She quickly closed the door and brought up Severus’ image. He was sitting at his desk in the potions classroom but as yet the students were queuing up outside.
“Severus, can I come and watch you teach class. I’ve got nothing to do.”
He lifted his head and could see no sign of her. “If you promise not to interfere and it stops you from watching me through that infernal mirror, yes. Come through.”
Sky opened the nearest door and stepped into the classroom. “Hi. What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing. Just sit down and stay quiet.” Severus placed a piece of parchment on the floor near his desk and flicked his wand at it, transfiguring it into a desk and chair. It was slightly better than the student desks.
“You can sit there and observe. I have first year Slytherin/Gryffindor. Perhaps you could help keep an eye on them. Stop them from melting their cauldrons.”
“Okay. Can I help them if they get stuck?”
“No. If they listen and do what they are told they should not need any help.” Severus stood and went to admit the students. A soon as they were seated he addressed them.
“We have an observer today. Should the need arise, you will address her as Miss Morrrigan and show her respect at all times. Miss Morrigan will be watching for any mistakes you may make. Though I sincerely hope there will be none. After almost a year, you should be well able to understand the instructions you are given and be able to follow them without incident. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes Sir.” They all answered as one. No one ever disputed Professor Snape. Sky noticed that they all seemed terrified of him. ‘So this is how he acts when he teaches.’ Sky had thought he was only like this when he taught her.
Severus put the instructions up on the board, giving them ten minutes to copy it down exactly as he had written it. Passing Sky a piece of parchment, he asked her to retrieve the items from the potions cupboard and sat down to begin marking fourth year homework assignments.
He noticed that most of the boys’ gazes, young as they were, followed Sky as she made her way to the cupboard.
“You have exactly four and a half minutes left to finish copying this down.” He growled.
Heads were suddenly bent back over the desks, quills scratching at parchment.
Sky, placed the items from the list onto a small trolley, which followed her back into the classroom. The ingredients were all laid out neatly and in the order they would be required.
‘She did not even look at the board. How did she know what we are brewing?’ He wondered. ‘There again, with Salazar Slytherin as her teacher …’ He waved his wand at the board and it cleared.
“You may step forward and collect your ingredients from Miss Morrigan. As soon as you have what you need, return to your desks and begin. There will be no conferring so I expect complete silence.”
The students stepped forward with their lists, making a line in front of Sky. As each one told her what they needed, she passed them the correct amount. One young girl looked nervous as hell to Sky and her list was incomplete. She’d only managed to copy down about two thirds of the ingredients. Sky began to pass her the items she asked for and whispered quietly under her breath. ‘Instructus completus’. Instructions complete. The girl didn’t hear her but was amazed when she looked at her list for the next item and found it completed.
Sky kept her face neutral and passed the required items, moving her along ready for the next one. She had to repeat the incantation twice more before they were done and she could return the trolley. But Severus was none the wiser and the students had no idea what she did. She sat at her desk, her eyes roving over them as they sweated over their cauldrons.
Severus looked up occasionally but decided that Sky was keeping a good enough eye on them all for the moment. About half way through the brewing, he stood to make his way among the desks and motioned for Sky to accompany him.
Although he did not shout and act as nasty as he usually would, the Potions Master was still very strict and very picky. Sky noticed he was quick to remove points from the Gryffindor’s over the tiniest mistake; whether the potion was slightly the wrong shade or he considered it to be a little too thick or too thin. But when he was peering into the Slytherin cauldrons, most of which were much worse, he did not deduct points. In fact, he awarded them for substandard potions. Sky didn’t think this was at all fair. She walked back along the rows of Griffindors muttering quietly to her self. No one heard her say ’Reddo’ I return each time she passed a student who had points taken from them unfairly. Then she made her way through the Slytherins and muttered ’Capio’. I remove each time Severus walked between the rows of desks and awarded or removed points unfairly; she would follow and reverse the points. By the end of class, there were not many points left unaffected.
Neither Severus nor the students had a clue as to what she did. It would only be later that the lack of change would be noticed in the large glasses up in the main hall later in the day. She was pleased with herself by the end of class.
Severus was eager to get the students out of his classroom and accompany Sky into the wall. He wanted to see her perform her dark magic. He’d always been fascinated with dark magic and was quite adept at it himself. But she had received full tuition in the subject from Salazar and he could not hope to know a fraction of what she did.
“I am looking forward to seeing you work. Have you worked out exactly what you need to do yet?”
“How could I? Someone hid my book.”
“Ah yes. I am sorry about that. At the time it seemed like a good idea.”
“Severus, all you needed to do was ask me not to do dark magic in Hogwarts. I would have listened.”
Back in his study he removed the wards and unlocked the drawer where he’d hidden the book, removed it along with the letter and passed them to her.
“Here you are.”
“Thanks. Come on then. We may as well get started.”
She pulled open the bedroom door and entered the wall with Severus.
All four portraits were on the living room wall and all four Founders were sleeping soundly. Trying to be as quiet as they could, Sky opened the door again and they went down the stone steps that led to the wall laboratory. Severus closed the door behind them so as not to disturb the portraits. As soon as she approached the work table, Sky took a parchment and quill, writing down what she needed.
Pestle (Pewter) and mortar (Earthen)
1 basilisk scale (whole)
Hair from a vampire. (Male (cut into 4 equal pieces)
3 stamens from the Stony Cors flower (Finely ground)
Blood
Scraping from parchment
Severus leaned over her shoulder, watching her write. “Your handwriting has improved considerably since … basilisk scale? Where are you going to get one of … you have vampire hair? Sky, no one has ever been able to find the Stony Cors flower.”
“In the cupboard. Help yourself.” She told him distractedly and tapped her wand to the parchment.
Severus weaved sideways as the items she had written down whizzed past him and landed carefully on the table in front of her. He decided to leave the rifling of her potions stores until later. He wanted to see what she would do next. Sky dropped the three Stony Cor stamens into the mortar, the pewter pestle immediately starting to grind them down, taking her knife, she quickly and neatly cut the vampire hair into four and threw them in with the now finely ground stamens and banished the pestle.
Snapping her fingers, the mortar lifted just enough to accommodate a small flame beneath it. She swirled her finger above the mortar and the two ingredients began to mix slowly in a clockwise direction as Sky held the piece of parchment over the mix and started to scrape various parts the parchment, being careful to avoid the actual ink.
“Are you not going to add some of the ink?”
“No. Whoever sent this won’t have touched the ink. But they will have had their hands on the parchment itself.”
She cleaned the knife and held her hand over the mortar. With a quick swipe, she cut into her palm and let her blood pour on top of the ingredients and healed it again with her wand. Extinguishing the flame she set the mortar back on the table.
“Right. We need to let it cool. Did you find what you wanted?”
“What?” He looked at her confused for a moment. “No. I wanted to watch you. How long before the next stage?”
“Twenty minutes. Go on. See if there’s anything you want.”
Severus was like a child in a sweetie shop when he entered her store cupboard. “Are you certain you do not mind me taking some of these?” He called out.”
“No you go for it. But just remember that there will always be plenty in stock so you don’t need to worry about not getting what you need when you need it.”
He stuck his head out the door and stared at her, his mouth agape. “Are you serious?”
“Hmm hm.” Sky was reading up on the spell she needed to use and couldn’t see what the fuss was about. They were only potions ingredients after all. The extreme rarity of many of them meant nothing to her.
Fifteen minutes later, Severus emerged with a box full of phials and jars, small packets and tiny chests, all containing some rare ingredient or something that it was not believed really existed.
She laughed when she saw him. His face full of wonder at his finds. He looked as though he had just dug up some buried treasure. Sticking her nose into the box, she frowned.
“Severus. You told me that most of these would get me into trouble if they were found at Hogwarts.”
“Yes but I have ways of hiding them. And I have never heard of this one before.” He told her holding up a small purple phial. “And this one is near impossible to get hold of and I have been trying to get my hands on some of this for years.”
“Whatever. Just don’t blame me if you get caught with them.”
But he wasn’t listening to her. His eyes were greedily ogling the contents of the box he carried. Sky shook her head and rolled her eyes.
“Come on. Let’s go have a cuppa while we wait for this to cool.”
He followed her up the steps and placed his box on the kitchen table as Sky opened the cabinet and removed the tea tray, carrying it into the living room.
“Severus, come on.” She shouted, knowing he had his head back in the box.
“How will you know when it is cool enough?”
“I’ll know. My wand will warn me.”
They were halfway through their second cup when Sky’s wand started to vibrate softly against her wrist.
“You finished? It’s time.”
He followed her back down the steps and they both sat at the table in front of the mortar. It now contained a thick grey paste. Sky held out her hand and her wand moved into her palm. She laid the letter on the table and using a wooden spatula, took a large dollop of the paste and spread it onto the parchment, completely covering it. She held her wand over the top of it and spoke an incantation.
‘Nuntius. Quaro tuus nomen. Video tuus hominis.’
Messenger, I ask your name. I seek your person.
Severus raised his eyebrows. He’d never heard that incantation before and had to ask her what it meant. As they watched, her wand and the stone at her throat glowed and the glows merged as they reached the paste which then began to take form and rose up, separating from the parchment, changing colour, darkening until it was a pale greenish brown. The paste distorted and reformed until they could see the vague shape of a person in front of them. She held out her hand and a piece of blank parchment came from across the room and into her waiting fingers. Sky slid it under the letter and they watched as the paste once again changed shape. This time it was as though it was forming a tangle of letters. They appeared and changed too fast to be able to discern any distinct words but they kept on forming and changing and then suddenly dropped back onto the table with a splat. Covering them both in a gooey mess.
“Shit.” Severus grumbled as he jumped of his chair and dug in his pocket for his wand. He scourgified them both and sat down again. “Did you know that was going to happen?”
“No. I would’ve moved if I did.” She giggled. “You still have some on your face.” She wiped it away with her hand and wiped her hand on her jeans.
“Now what?”
“Now we find out who sent this.” She told him as she pulled the previously blank piece of parchment from under the letter and looked at it.
