James sat on one of the uncomfortable wooden chairs beside
Sirius at the large wooden table. While
the Order discussed business, he spent most of the time pouting. He was in a foul mood because witches and
wizards who only knew who Harry was because of his fame were on their way to
get him.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to go. He was stuck in the house because the stupid
cut on his foot hadn’t completely healed yet, so Lucius was using it as an
excuse to continue his over protective streak.
Normally James would have dug his heels in and gone anyway, but Sirius
was on Lucius’ side for some strange reason.
There had been quite a few volunteers, and majority ruled
when it came to picking who got to go. James
felt this was incredibly unfair seeing as how he was the boy’s father, but as
it was, he was voted out by an overwhelming majority.
His sour mood hadn’t gone unnoticed. Kreacher, the house elf who was normally very
unpleasant, was staying well away from everyone. Severus, who was usually a glutton for
punishment and always had a snarky comment on the tip of his tongue, was
unusually quiet. He didn’t even argue
with Sirius, even though James would’ve let that slide since he was so unhappy
with his best friend. Mundungus
Fletcher, who was supposed to have been watching Harry when he was attacked,
sat in the corner. He’d been
‘accidentally’ stepped on and elbowed a few times already and was keeping his
distance.
Lucius tried to make up with James by holding his hand and
squeezing his thigh, but James wasn’t having any of it. He ignored the blonde completely and kept
glancing up at the clock. Lucius
eventually gave up and leaned back in his chair with a blank expression. Sirius actually felt for him. He knew why Lucius was acting the way he was
because they shared the same fear.
As the hours ticked by James got more and more
restless. “You know Moody,” Sirius gave
him a weak smile. “He likes to go the
long way.”
“Yeah,” James agreed, though it didn’t make him feel much
better. Even though all the evidence
told them Voldemort wasn’t likely to try anything, he was still worried.
It was late when they finally heard the door open and the
sound of several people enter. The other
Order members joined them in the kitchen while Molly rushed up to show Harry
where he would be sleeping. The motherly
act only irked James more.
He was grateful that Molly and Arthur Weasley had taken such
good care of Harry when he couldn’t, but they were still acting like Harry was
their son, even with James sitting right there in the room with them. Normally he would have only been a little
irritated, but that night his mood just kept getting worse and worse.
As Severus stood up to give his report they could hear
muffled yelling. Severus paused, his
expression showing his annoyance. “I see
the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” he grumbled.
“It seldom does,” James shot back, knowing one of the Potion
Master’s sore spots was his own father.
He couldn’t help but sport a wicked grin when the usually stoic Severus
Snape let his mask slip for a moment. He
stared Severus straight in the eye. “Did
I hit a nerve?” he asked condescendingly.
“That’s enough James…” Remus interrupted. “We know you’re
mad at us, but that’s no reason to get pissy with someone who wasn’t even here
to vote.” James sighed and stared out
the window with his arms crossed for the rest of the meeting.
“Lucius, are you staying to eat tonight?” Molly asked as
nearly everyone else got up and left.
Lucius thought about it for a moment. “No, I don’t think I will.”
He got up and left as well, hoping James would be more
agreeable in the morning. Molly left to
go fetch the kids, and James decided he might as well get dinner started. It was late and he enjoyed cooking.
When Harry entered the room James was already in a better
mood. Harry hugged his father and
godfather, seeming more happy to see them than angry. Whatever he had been shouting about earlier
he had apparently gotten out of his system.
Dinner was fairly uneventful, except for Fred and George
trying to set the table using magic and ended up spilling a pitcher of
butterbeer and nearly stabbing Sirius with a bread knife. It was after dinner when everyone was feeling
relaxed and sleepy that Sirius decided to stir things up.
“You know Harry; I’m surprised you didn’t ask more
questions.
The tension in the air was suddenly heavy. Molly insisted that Harry be kept in the dark
for his own good just like Dumbledore wanted, but Sirius had a different
opinion. The two of them had argued back
and forth over who had Harry’s best interests at heart with both Harry and
James right there in the room.
“Wasn’t anyone going to ask me, his father, my opinion?”
James spoke up. “Or was I just imagining
my existence?”
“Sorry James,” Sirius frowned.
“Sirius is right, Harry has been through more than most of
us already,” James said. “It isn’t fair
to keep him in the dark.”
“I agree,” Remus chimed in.
“But I think we should only tell him enough to give him a general
picture of the situation.”
After seeing that she wasn’t going to get any support, Molly
gave in. She tried to send the rest of
the kids to bed, but Ron and Hermione argued that since Harry was going to tell
them everything anyway, they might as well be allowed to stay.
“So, what’s Voldemort been doing?” Harry asked straight
out.
“Absolutely nothing,” James answered truthfully.
“Nothing?” Harry repeated in disbelief.
“Well, he’s recruiting, but other than that he’s lying low,”
James explained. “He’s pouting because
his comeback didn’t go as planned. You
survived and alerted Dumbledore immediately.
Dumbledore is the only wizard Voldemort has ever feared, so you can see
why that’s a problem.”
“Ron and Hermione said something about the Daily Prophet saying things about
me. Why would they do that?” Harry
asked.
“Because Fudge is afraid,” Remus answered.
“Of what?”
“Dumbledore,” the werewolf sighed. “After You-Know-Who first disappeared,
everyone wanted Dumbledore to take the job as Minister, but he refused. Fudge has never forgotten that, and now he’s
become very fond of his power. If he
lets himself believe you then he’s in trouble.
It’s been about fourteen years since the Ministry has had to deal with
You-Know-Who, and no one is prepared.”
“If it makes you feel any better, your Great Uncle Hezekiah
is fuming,” James said. “Cornelius Fudge
has been declared ‘kill on sight’, trade has been cut off, and the city of Falas’
Dar, has been evacuated.”
“Trade?” Harry asked curiously. “I didn’t know Atlantis traded with anyone.”
“Oh yes,” James nodded.
“They’re kind of a superpower in the magical world. They mostly export things like jewelry, ink,
cauldrons, clothing, herbs, perfumes and of course incense. That brass scale you have was probably made
in Atlantis.”
“Oh. So cutting off
trade is bad for us then?”
“Extremely,” James answered.
“Wizarding Britain
is already feeling the effects.
Apothecaries can no longer get hard to find potion ingredients, and they’re
suffering. Witches and wizards who needed
those ingredients to make potions they need for their livelihoods are just
plain screwed…”
Harry’s eyes widened.
“Wow, all this over me?”
James gave him a soft smile.
“I told you, elves don’t turn their backs on family. It’s not just for you though. Hezekiah and Dumbledore… how can I put this
delicately since we’ve just eaten… Well,
let’s just say they’ve been close for many years and they have occasional
slumber parties.”
A shiver ran down Harry’s spine. “Okay, just spare me the details please. What about Hogwarts? Was Dumbledore able to get everything he
needed from them?”
“Of course,” James chuckled.
“Trade is being kept open for family and um… friends…. “
“Speaking of which,” Sirius interrupted. “your incense and Dwarven blasting powder
arrived yesterday. James, what do you
need blasting powder for?”
“Nothing,” James answered quickly.
Sirius raised an eyebrow.
“Uh huh… If you’re not up to
something I’m Queen Victoria.”
“Pleasure to meet you Your Highness,” James laughed.
“All right, now it really is time for the children to get to
bed,” Molly interrupted.
Everyone said their good nights and the kids went to
bed. Now that James was in a better
mood, he and his two best friends stayed up most of the night like they used to
do when they were in school.
