A/N: You would not believe how long this has been half written and just staring at me mockingly... well, maybe you would...
Harry was determined to not think about what had happened in that shack. He’d made a statement to the Aurorers that came to ask him about it but he refused to talk about it with anyone else. Draco was still lingering but Harry was secretly glad for that. James was utterly enamored with the Incubus and it gave Harry a much-needed break from single parenthood.
In fact, the entire situation had given Harry an idea. He’d came up with it while watching Draco playing with James in the living room on the third day and (as he usually did) thought about it for two seconds before blurting it out. Draco was staring at him like he’d grown two heads. “I’m sorry, but what was that?” the blonde asked in clear disbelief.“I want you to be James’ Godfather,” Harry repeated.Draco blinked, still obviously caught off guard. “Why me? I would have thought your best friend the Weasel would already have that title.”Harry shook his head. “I never wanted Ron to be James’ godfather. I wanted it to be someone who I could trust to look after James if something happened to me. You’re a good wizard and you are an Incubus like he is. You can teach him things that I definitely can’t. Plus you actually know his father,” he added with a bit of a sour tone. He was still very frustrated with that little detail. He’d been trying to weasel hints and clues out of Draco for days now and only had gotten a few that were of any real help. He was determined to figure it out though. He was so done with this little game. The blonde studied Harry before looking back down at James. “You’re sure?”“I’m positive. You’re the best for the job,” Harry insisted.Malfoy still looked a little apprehensive but nodded. “Alright. Besides, you’re right. I’ll do a much better job than the Weasel,” he said with a smirk.“Oh shut up,” Harry said without much real venom. “You don’t have to be such a snob all the time.” Malfoy still looked smug but Harry decided to not worry about it. He wouldn’t be Draco Malfoy if he wasn’t smug at winning something over Ron Weasley. “I have to go out though. So, for your first duty as Godfather, you get to babysit.”Draco’s smirk fell instantly. “Why do I suddenly feel like I got roped into something I was not fully aware of?”“Slytherins aren’t the only ones who can be clever,” Harry replied as he grabbed his coat.“Clearly,” Draco said dryly. “Where are you going anyway?”“The office. I’m supposed to go back to work next month,” Harry answered. “I’ve decided to take an extended leave. Maybe I’ll go back to work after James is a bit older but until then I think it’s best to just stay at home.”Draco chuckled at that. Harry turned to give him a questioning glance. “Oh nothing. I just had the insanely amusing image of you as a stay-at-home mother. One of those ones from the fifties that the muggles were so fond of,” Draco explained with a wicked grin. “Do you have an apron by chance?”“Stuff it, Malfoy!” Harry snapped before leaving the house to go to the office. He was already regretting asking Draco to be James’ godfather. He was going to be entirely insufferable.Harry tried to remain oblivious to the stares he got as he made his way through the Ministry and headed up towards Shacklebolt’s office. There were whispers and stares. Harry figured it was both because of his unexpected parenthood and the recent ‘incident’ in the shack. Neither were things he was going to get into any conversations about. He was here simply to tell the Minister what he’d decided to do about being a single parent.Almost as soon as Harry got to the Minister’s office he was ushered in. If there was one perk that Harry actually didn’t mind from being ‘the-boy-who-lived’ it was he never had to wait to see the minister. Or really anyone for that matter. Secretaries all spotted him coming and rushed to inform whoever they worked under that he was here and usually he was let in with only a few minutes wait at most. It hadn’t even been that extreme as a child but after defeating Voldemort again well… Harry could see why Dumbledore was always so concerned with fame going to Harry’s head.Once Harry was shown into the office he took the seat opposite Shacklebolt. “Harry. I’m so sorry about what happened. We already have a trial set for-”Harry shook his head. “I’m not here about that.” He really didn’t want to go into the details of the trial about his rape. He didn’t even want to think about the fact that it had happened. “I’m here about that extended leave you offered me.”Shacklebolt frowned a little but then sighed. “I suppose this means you’re going to take it?”Harry nodded. “I wouldn’t be able to focus on work like this. I’d rather just stay home and raise James.”“Well, I’d be lying if I said I was completely surprised,” Shacklebolt admitted. “Especially with recent happenings. But whenever you’re ready to come back just let me know. We could always use your help, Harry.”“Course. I just have… too much stuff going on right now. And I’ve been allowing this bloody Incubus thing to go on way too long. There’s got to be a way to find him out and I’m going to do it no matter how long it takes,” Harry said firmly. “Between that and raising James I’ll be kept plenty busy.”“I can give you the registry we have on known Incubi but that isn’t probably going to help much,” Shacklebolt said. “Most aren’t known and they don’t exactly tell us when they reproduce. We’ve got the same problem with vampires and even werewolves to an extent.”Harry wasn’t terribly surprised by that. Vampires, werewolves, and Incubi weren’t exactly well looked on by the rest of the wizard community. Being forced to register their existence was bound to rub some the wrong way and he imagined quite a number would rather just keep it quiet. “When’s the last time the registry for Incubi was updated?”Shacklebolt reached into his desk and pulled out a depressingly thin folder. He flipped it open to the back and sighed heavily. “Nineteen Fifty Three. November sixth. That’s the date on the last added name here.”“That’s the whole registry?” Harry asked. There couldn’t be more than ten pages in the whole file.“I’m afraid so. And most of these names are probably dead by now anyway. You’re welcome to it though,” Shacklebolt said before handing it over.“Thanks…” Harry muttered. He still took it but he had a severe doubt as to its usefulness. Suddenly, a thought occurred to him. “Is James going to have to be put in here?” He wasn’t sure he would like that. Things like this were public record and having James’ name in a registry would make it very clear what had happened, something Harry had tried quite hard to keep a secret.“We have a special file on your family, Harry. It’s mentioned in there.”Harry was relieved until what he’d just heard sunk in. “You have a file on my family?” he repeated. “Why? What kind of file? Why didn’t I know about this?”“Calm down, Harry. It was decided to keep all information on you private for your own protection back when you were a child. Dumbledore thought it would be best and I happen to agree with him so I’ve continued it. Dark Wizards have a habit of getting spies placed in the Ministry and they would be all too happy to find out damaging things about you and your son,” Shacklebolt explained. “It’s very secure. Only a handful of people will ever see it.” Harry wasn’t sure if that made him feel all that much better about it.“Well, um, alright then,” Harry said as he got to his feet. “You know where I’ll be.”Shacklebolt nodded in agreement. “If anything World Ending seems to be happening I’ll be sure to give you a ring. You just focus on what you need to. Come back when you’re ready.”Harry nodded and left the minister’s office. He was glad that he could finally trust a minister. And that said minister was actually competent at his job. With leave taken and a new, although unimpressive, lead as to who the Incubus was that kept playing with him, Harry was in a little better mood as he made his way home. He’d figured out harder mysteries before. He just had to put more of his energy into it. Hermione would probably do wonders with the registry and put him on a decent track. He even had Draco sort of on his side possibly kind of. Surely that would be helpful… somehow… down the road. Harry shook his head to dislodge the useless thoughts. As soon as he got home he would call Hermione and go over this file. They would come up with something. They just had to.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
