A/N: Sorry, everyone. Life, and my ex, have been a bitch lately. Also was on vacation, but I'm back now and will get back to writing again!
Severus knew things had been going too well.
He was thankful that he he had not shown up at his house with all his posessions in tow, when the Aurors brandished their wands at him and demanded that he relinquish his own wand. His things were still safely at the Malfoy Manor, and thanks to their little afternoon spanking scene, Lucius was far more cooperative and accommodating.
Unfortunately this was not the case for the Ministry.
He did not resist when they arrested him, nor when they locked him into an interrogation chamber, strapping him to a metal chair under a harsh wizard light as if trying to recreate the old Film Noire of the Muggle culture. He said nothing but waited, knowing that this had been likely to happen once he came out of hiding. He had to first give Potter's plan a chance. He only hoped he was not destroying his own chance at freedom in doing so.
When he saw that Harry was with Shacklebolt, Severus felt a jolt go through him, one which he scarcely recognised--hope. Still, he couldn't help but scowl at the entire situation. He granted Kingsley a small nod, keeping his voice deadpan, neutral. "On your orders, Minister Shacklebolt?" If his lip curled slightly, it was beyond his control.
Kingsley sighed, his shoulders slightly stooped despite his impressive size. "Not exactly, Severus. I wanted you brought in for questioning because I could really use your help. I did not, however, intend for you to be arrested."
Severus raised his wrists where the enchanted ropes held him tight and raised an eyebrow sardonically.
"Tell them to release him!" Harry demanded, and Severus could help the way his pulse quickened at the outrage in Harry's voice. He didn't think he would have ever heard another wizard stand up for him like that, and particularly not Harry. It was a far cry from the betrayed outrage Harry had shown when he'd thought Severus had killed Dumbledore.
Kingsley nodded to the Aurors. "Go ahead and release him. I'm sure Mr. Snape will cooperate with our needs." He gave Severus a hard look. "Won't you?"
It wasn't really as if he had a choice, but Severus wisely decided not to say that. "Of course."
He waited for the Aurors to murmur the counterspell. However, they remained silent. Kingsley frowned. "I said, release him."
"Sorry, Minister, but it wasn't on your orders that we arrested him to begin with, although you will certainly be allowed to question him for your ongoing investigations."
Severus felt rage starting to rise up within him and concentrated on staying silent, knowing an outburst now would only further endanger him. Fortunately, there was someone else in the room free to express himself. Harry strode up to the Auror who had spoken and stood nose to nose with him, glaring. "Under whose orders then? Kingsley's the Minster of Magic, for cripes sake!"
The auror seemed confused and taken back by being confronted by the Hero of the Wizarding World, Severus thought with amusement. Less amusing, however, was his response. "There was a report that Mr. Snape abused his power both as headmaster at Hogwarts last year and as a professor previous to that. There are a few charges against him, none of which have anything to do with the war. There is rumor of misconduct with minors--serious charges."
"Lies," Severus ground out, unable to hold himself back any longer.
"Who is accusing him of this rubbage? Dumbledore trusted him--yeah, he might have a sharp tongue, but Snape never had any 'misconduct'--you want 'misconduct', you should be arresting Deloris Umbridge--do you see what she did to me?!" Harry was uncovering his wrist, showing the faded letters to the Auror, 'must not tell lies . . ."
Kingsley, put a hand on Harry's arm, trying to calm him. "Harry, I'm sure the truth will be uncovered--I'll look into it, I promise."
Harry rounded on him next, eyes flashing, two spots of colour on his cheeks revealing his anger, "No. You don't understand. I need him back at my place tonight. If there's a bond or something, fine, I'll pay it. He'll come and sit for trial, or whatever. But all I can say is you'd better have a reason to have arrested him beyond 'hey, so and so said', or I'm going to countersue the lot of you!"
All sets of eyes stared at Harry in shock, not least of all Severus, who was impressed despite himself. He never would have dreamed Harry would show such passion--for him.
The Aurors looked to each other uncertainly. Kingsley folded his arms, nodding at Harry. "That certainly seems like a reasonable request to me. Whoever has filed these charges can be assured that we will conduct a full investigation. But I do not see Mr. Snape poses any kind of immediate threat to anyone, and is in fact assisting Mr. Potter in his full recovery from battle fatigue. I am sure that Mr. Snape will appear when called before the Wizengamot, won't you?" He stared hard at Severus.
Severus knew when to back down, when to acquise. "Yes. Of course." He even managed to keep the ire out of his voice.
"No bond will be necessary, I think," Kingsely continued, pulling out a form of some kind and presenting it to Harry. "Harry, you'll promise to make sure that Severus is present for his time as well, yes?"
"I will," Harry assured him, keeping his voice steady. It was still obvious that he was angry, but he signed the paper, standing near as the Aurors waved their wands, releasing the bindings holding Severus's wrists. He stood quietly, allowing the paperwork to be signed as well by the Aurors and Minster, allowing no hints of the fury that was brewing beneath the surface. When it came to his turn to sign, Severus did so, barely glancing at the Aurors. To the bloody underworld with them.
Severus remained silent until they finished releasing him, quietly following Harry out of the chamber and into the lift. Kingsley stayed behind, most likely to grill the Aurors and dig deeper into the mess. Once in the lift, however, Severus snarled, smacking his hand against the wall as it vibrated, sending up back up to the main hall of the Ministry. "I knew it! I knew they would be out for me if I returned."
Harry was silent for a moment, and Severus wondered if he had spoken too rashly, if he had upset the young man and damaged the fragile new bond between them. Just before the doors opened, however, he heard Harry mutter, "I guess I should have known too. Nothing in my life is ever easy."
That made two of them, Severus thought, but then they were heading out into the crowded entranceway, and the dreaded crowds. He was torn between keeping his head down and trying to be invisible to sending glares in every direction, but before he could decide which to do, he felt Harry's hand tentatively take his own. Oh, Severus thought. Back to their public image and the date. That was probably the best route, truthfully. He smiled at Harry, relaxing.
A few pictures were snapped of them, a few wizards asked for autographs, and Harry signed them, then begged off any more, stating that it had been a long day, there had been some business to iron out, and he needed to get home. Once they were out of the Ministry and safely back at Grimmauld place, Severus pulled him in for a kiss. "Thank you," he said. The words felt strange in his mouth, but they were the truth. He was thankful, that Harry had been there, that Harry had steered them out of that bloody mess. "It's almost frightening. You're becoming more Slytherin by the day, with your handling of the public."
Harry blushed, shrugging. "Survival, I guess. I'm just tired of them running my life." He scowled then. "I can't believe they arrested you. That's just . . ." He made a frustrated noise, opening the door for Severus. "I mean really! You Know Who would still be running around if it hadn't been for you!"
"We're still in the middle of a witchhunt--literally," Severus commented, as he followed Harry into the kitchen dining nook. There was a formidible stack of letters on the table along with paper and pens for replying. "I see you've been busy today."
"Yeah," Harry said in a low voice. He sounded tired. The nagging thought came to Severus, that he would need to speak with Harry about Lucius, what their arrangement had been, what it still could be. Soon, he promised himself. They had both encountered enough trouble today.
Harry sat down at a clear spot, motioning for Severus to join him. Kreacher soon appeared, with roast and small Yorkshire puddings to serve for both of them. Harry looked at Severus apologetically. "He knows what kinds of food I like and cycles through them. If there are certain dishes you like, you can let me know and I'll tell him to fix those as well. You're staying the rest of the night, right?"
Severus slid gracefully into a chair, folding his hands as he gazed across the table at Harry. The young man not only seemed in favor of spending more time with him; he seemed desperate for it. Never, in all his most outlandish fantasies, would Severus have imagined that Harry Potter might actually desire him. He nodded at the young man. "I am. And roast is fine. If I think of anything I want in particular, I'll let you know." Truthfully the simple fare would probably be easier on his stomach than the gourmet meals at the Malfoy estate.
The food arrived shortly thereafter. As they began eating, Severus couldn't help but notice Harry giving him little glances every time he thought Severus wasn't looking. It was amusing but also somewhat annoying. After watching Harry squirm in his seat one too many times, Severus set down his fork. "Have I gravy in my hair or something?"
Harry's lips twitched and he almost choked on his bite. "No. I was just wondering--did you manage to get your stuff back to your house? And . . . other than the whole Ministry thing . . . did your day go all right?"
The question brought a flush of guilt, which was ridiculous of course; they had no official agreements between them. They were merely dating, Severus reminded himself. He shrugged. "My things are still at the Malfoy manor. And yes, other than that fiasco, the day was fine. Lucius sends his regards, by the way."
"Hmm," Harry replied, not sounding pleased by either the news of his things nor the regards. "He's not giving you any trouble? Or asking for any favours or anything?
It wasn't really Harry's business, Severus mused, but on the other hand, it was actually rather nice that he was concerned. That was definitely new for him. "He wasn't pleased that I was leaving, and I wouldn't put it past him to request a favour for it at some point. But for now, things are well."
Harry took a big bite and chewed on it for a moment, nodding. Taking that cue, Severus began to eat, but as soon as he did, Harry asked, "So are we dating? Like, for real?"
Severus swallowed hard.
It looked like it was time for The Talk.
