Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or any of the characters within as they belong to JK Rowling. As such I am making no money from the writing of this story and it is purely for fun and enjoyment. |
I am unsure how to reply to reviews directly. If anyone knows, and would be willing to share the information, that would be great. Thanks in advance!
To answer some questions:
Right now I update every Tuesday. I am working hard to stay ahead of my chapters so this does not change.
I am unsure if this will be strictly a top/bottom story or switch. The characters have frequently taken control of the story themselves so I often just follow their leads while doing my best to keep them within my plans for the story. So far, Severus doesn’t seem to mind too terribly being the passive partner but that may change in the future. *wink*
Thank you so much for your reviews!

“Sirius, I know you can do this.”
Padfoot snapped his jaws at the vampire. Edge was not impressed.
*I’m trying.*
“Are you really?”
Padfoot shifted into Sirius who paced away a few strides. He turned back with the same frustration.
“Yes.” He snapped. “I am trying.”
Fingers ran through black strands as he paced the room. Edge waited quietly, arms crossed, while the man vented.
“It should not be this difficult, for Merlin’s sake. I can shift into Padfoot. I can shift into Cobalt. Why can I not shift from one to the other?” His voice began to rise with each sentence. “They are the same damn species. One is smaller, sure, but they are the same basic shape. Why can I not do this? Why does this even matter?” Sirius was just under yelling volume.
“Are you finished yet?”
Sirius whipped around. “NO!”
Edge raised an eyebrow in a very Snape like manner. Sirius glared at the vampire. He inhaled deeply causing his chest to expand and shoulders to shift back. Edge stared at the wizard in front of him who looked like he was about to explode. His expression and posture remained unchanged as he stared Sirius down; daring him. The air suddenly left Sirius’ lungs in a woosh and his entire body seemed to deflate.
“Yes.” He mumbled and collapsed into a nearby chair.
Edge waited a moment. He sighed and moved to the chair beside Sirius. A calming fire came to life in a suddenly appearing fireplace. Edge really loved the Room of Requirement. Every house should have one in his personal opinion.
“The point is to save you precious seconds should you need them. Not to mention protect you from being recognized by the Ministry. It would do no good to have access to both forms if you gave up your identity having to shift human between canines.” He kept his voice calm to not ignite Sirius’ frustration further.
“I know. Trust me, I know.” Sirius sighed and raked his hands over his face. “I know the theory. I should be able to do this without issues.”
Edge stared into the fire for a few moments as he thought. It was true that Sirius had the ability. He took to changing into Cobalt with flying colors and could still change into Padfoot with the same ease he could before. Normally, Edge wouldn’t push the shift between Cobalt and Padfoot this hard but the fact remained that Sirius was a fugitive. Maybe if he could get Sirius to relax they could make some progress.
“When did you become an animagus?”
Sirius blinked at him a few times then shrugged. “Fifth year.”
Edge gaped at him. “You were fifteen?” He had known Sirius had been an animagus for a while but had no idea it had been for that long. No wonder the man was attached to Padfoot. He had been shifting into the dog for over half his life.
“Yep.” A mischievous yet fond expression took over his features. “We discovered Remus was a werewolf in our second year. Of course we wanted to help any way we could. James was the one to come up with the idea. Took us three gruesome and tiring years to do it but we managed.”
“Who shifted first?” Edge could admit his curiosity was getting the better of him.
Sirius chuckled softly. “James, of course. Transfiguration genius, that one.”
Edge smiled watching Sirius as he relaxed. “That is Harry’s dad, right?”
“Yeah.” Sirius nodded. “Harry is a lot like James but different as well. He inherited most of his attitude from Lily. Sure Harry breaks rules and gets up to all kinds of mischief himself, but his reasons are more aligned with reasons Lily would have used.”
“What was she good at?”
Sirius snorted fondly. “What was she not good at would be the easier question to answer. She was brilliant in Potions. Admittedly, not as brilliant as Snape, but she was damn close. She excelled in Charm work though.” He sniggered. “Lily was a charming witch but she could hex you just as well if you made her mad.”
Edge smiled softly as Sirius talked about his late friends. “They sound like very nice people. You must have loved them very much.”
“I would have died for them.” Sirius’ eyes turned sad but he still carried a hint of a fond smile on his lips. “I hate that Harry never got to meet them.”
Edge had nothing to say to that. He gave Sirius a moment before speaking again. “I want you to try something different for me.”
“Okay.” Sirius shook himself a bit as though he was shaking of the long past memories.
“Start as Cobalt and shift into Padfoot.”
Sirius was silent as he stared at the vampire. He blinked. “How will that go any different?”
Edge shrugged. “I don’t know. It may work and it may not.” He stood and moved to the center of the room motioning for Sirius to join him. “You are obviously more comfortable with Padfoots form. It may be easier for you to go from the form you know the least into the form you know the most.”
“I can give it a try.” Sirius stated in a way that made it seem like he was just doing it to humor the vampire.
Edge remained silent as Sirius shifted into the large wolf form of Cobalt. He made note that the process took a bit more time than shifting into Padfoot took. Cobalt was a vision though. The dark fur gleamed blue in the light. His limbs were long and lean but still muscular. Cobalt shook out thick fur once the transformation was complete before pinning Edge with his eyes. Edge had never seen a werewolf with any other eye color than gold. Cobalt’s were blue and appeared to glow from within the dark fur that covered the rest of him. Edge could admit he was very much in love with those eyes. He would never tell the others though.
“Shift into Padfoot.”
The dark wolf huffed. He shifted slightly on his paws before he started to shrink in on himself. His frame became narrower, legs grew shorter, and his dark fur became shaggy instead of lush and smooth. Eventually, the smaller form of Padfoot stood in front of Edge with a wagging tail and happy, panting grin. Edge gave him a smile in return.
“Very good. My theory proved to be correct.”
Padfoot shifted into Sirius. “Guess you were right.”
“You need to spend more time as Cobalt, Sirius. Learn his form more and I’m sure the transition going the opposite way will become just as easy.”
“I don’t exactly have the same opportunity to be Cobalt. Not like I can walk around as a gigantic wolf in the school.”
Edge narrowed his eyes slightly at the change in Sirius. He had pulled in on himself some. It almost seemed like he didn’t like Cobalt.
“No, but you could still go on jaunts through the forest after hours. I’m sure Remus would be willing to go with you.” He shrugged paying attention to how Sirius’ scent changed at the mention of Remus. “Harry and I could join you if you wanted as well.”
Sirius remained silent. Edge sighed. When did he become a therapist?
“Is something wrong between you and Remus?”
“What makes you think that?”
Edge raised an eyebrow. Sirius sighed.
“I don’t know. It’s hard to say.”
Edge opened his mouth to respond but a silver stag bounced in.
“What…?”
“Harry’s Patronus.”
Edge looked from the stag to Sirius and back. “That boy really is more powerful than he looks.” He mumbled under his breath.
“Severus has been called.” Harry’s voice echoed from the stag. It was thick with worry and urgency. “He’s already left.”
Edge cursed as the stag disappeared. “Damn that man.” He looked at Sirius. “Talk to Remus alright. Sort this out. And spend time as Cobalt.”
Edge disappeared right as the last word was said.

Remus looked up from his grading as the door to his rooms opened and closed. He heard the tip tap of nails on the floor signaling that it was Padfoot. He smiled as he returned to the many sheets of parchment.
“In the bedroom, Pads.”
Sirius appeared in the doorway soon after.
“How did things go?”
Sirius sat on the bed with a heaved sigh. “Could have gone better I guess. I managed to change from Cobalt to Padfoot.”
Remus finished the current assignment sending them to be packed away to be handed back the next day. He turned to his mate. “That sounds good. Progress at least.”
Sirius shrugged. “Edge wants me to spend more time as Cobalt. Learn his form better.”
“Makes sense. It’s Friday night tomorrow. Could make it a date?” Remus tilted his head in question. His mate smelled off tonight.
Sirius looked over at Remus. “You really want to?”
“Of course.” Remus looked confused. “Why wouldn’t I? Probably wouldn’t hurt to learn my own wolf side better as well.”
Sirius quickly stood, agitated. “Why? Why do you smell so weird then?”
Remus sat back blinking at Sirius confused. “Smell weird? What do you mean?” He discretely sniffed himself. What was his mate picking up on that he wasn’t?
“It’s bitter and stale…maybe…” Sirius growled in frustration. “My head tells me regret but that doesn’t feel quite right.”
Remus sat silent a few moments before he sighed moving closer to Sirius. “It’s not regret, Sirius.”
“Then what is it?”
“Guilt.” Remus admitted in a soft voice.
“Guilt?” Sirius stepped away a few steps. “You feel guilt?”
“Guilt and regret smell very similar. Guilt often times leads to regret after all.”
“You regret turning me, don’t you?”
Remus looked up in surprise. Sirius’ voice had sounded so small. Remus felt like he had been punched in the stomach.
“No!”
“But you just said…”
“I feel guilt, not regret. And not because I bit you.”
“Then why?”
“You almost lost Padfoot because of me.” Remus sat heavily on the bed head in his hands. “Not one of us thought about what biting you would mean considering you are, were, an animagus. You went through pain you shouldn’t have because of that. You could have died, Sirius.”
Sirius watched Remus taking in his mates words. He breathed deeply trying to make sense of all the scents he was getting. It made him dizzy and he shook his head. “But I didn’t. Edge was there just as we planned.”
Remus shook his head. “I know that. I just hate what you had to go through.” Remus looked up at Sirius. “I’m sorry for freaking you out. I wasn’t even aware it was that noticeable.”
“So you don’t regret biting me?” Sirius questioned quietly.
“No, Sirius.” Remus stood moving to cup his mates face in his hands. “I do not regret turning you. I will never regret getting to keep you and not having to watch you slowly die on me. I may feel a bit of guilt at what you had to go through when it wasn’t planned for because of our oversight. That does not mean I have any regrets.”
Blue eyes stared into honey golden. Sirius could smell the honesty, worry, and care coming from his mate. The guilt was still there under the surface but felt shifted, as though Remus was now feeling the guilt for upsetting him. Had his mate always carried some kind of guilt with him and Sirius had never known? He covered Remus’ hands with his own.
“Stop feeling so guilty, okay.”
Remus smiled softly. “Your nose is really going to be something else when you get used to it. The guilt doesn’t register to me yet you can smell it.”
“I don’t see how Harry dealt with it all.”
“A vampires sense of smell, while very advanced, can still be considered dull when compared to ours.” Remus stepped away. “Do you want to run tonight or stay in?”
Sirius eyed Remus with a knowing smirk. “You want to run, don’t you?”
Remus shrugged. “You are the one that has been shifting the better part of the night.”
Sirius wrapped his sandy haired mate up in a hug. “Tomorrow night.” He nuzzled close nosing under his mates chin that was sparsely covered in stubble. “I want to remain close to Harry tonight. Snape got called.”
“Edge went with him I take it?”
Sirius nodded. He nudged Remus into moving so they could get ready for bed. “I would ask Harry if he wanted to run with us but he’ll want to remain in the snakes rooms until he returns.”
“You can’t still be mad at Severus surely?”
“I can be if I want to be.” Sirius stated stubbornly.
Remus rolled his eyes fondly. “The two of you are never going to get along are you?”
“Maybe.” Sirius curled close to Remus under the blankets as they settled. “I need to catch his scent good first.”
Remus laughed. “You are going to let your nose get you into trouble is what you are going to do.”
“It will be worth it.”

Edge twitched his long tail in his hiding spot. It has been hours now since he and Severus had arrived at the manor for the meeting. He had been able to catch Severus in time to apparate with him. Immediately upon arrival he flitted away from the man and shifted to enter the wards surrounding the building. He often found it highly convenient that wizards never warded against animals. A small patch of trees served as his hiding spot for the evening. They were far enough he would not be easily detected but close enough he could still pick up bits and pieces from the meeting.
“We are…new allies…”
The sentences were often splintered. It frustrated Edge but he knew Severus would be filing everything away into his own report. Edge’s job tonight was simply back up in the event that things went too far south. Snake face had yet to find the spy but he seemed to be holding off his search for now. There was no doubt in any of their minds that there would be multiple tests to try to weed out the culprit. Edge could only hope someone else screwed up enough to have the blame laid on them. As screwed up as that sounded, he could not allow Severus to lose his life.
Witches and wizards started exiting the manor slowly. Edge ducked down in his hiding spot to avoid being seen. Finally the dark form of Severus emerged from the manor. Thankfully he was alone. Staying close to the ground and sticking to the shadows, he slunk his way back through the wards and to the apparition point. He arrived shortly before Severus. Severus paused a short moment before turning on the spot. Edge reached the man seconds before he disapparated.
Edge stumbled as they landed but his leopard form was as graceful as ever and saved him from an embarrassing tumble through the grass. He shook out his fur before shifting and hurrying to catch up to Severus who was already well on his way to the castle.
“Things went well I take it?”
“If you mean that no one got tortured this evening, then yes.” Severus snapped. His body was tense and he was clearly in a hurry. His long, quick strides never faltered.
“What happened, Severus?” Edge received no answer. “Severus.”
“I do not report to you.” The dark haired man grumbled not stopping nor did he look at the vampire.
Edge huffed, irritated at being dismissed so rudely, but said nothing else. They had reached the castle at this point. Edge continued to follow Severus through the halls to the Headmasters office. Severus did not act as though he cared Edge was there. He was focused only on getting to his destination. What had Edge missed during the meeting? He remembered picking up mentions of allies. What kind of allies was snake face gathering now? Elves wouldn’t give him the time of day. Neither would centaurs or dwarves. Goblins always remained neutral. More vampires maybe? Werewolves? Both would be cumbersome to handle but not impossible.
“Ah, Severus, meeting did not go too bad I see.” Dumbledore sat calmly behind his desk as they entered.
Severus sneered and glared at the man. “He is gathering more allies as expected. He has reached out to the werewolves through Greyback. Some giants have joined as well.”
Edge winced. Giants. Giants could cause a problem. “Werewolves will only be useful to him on the full moons. Cobalt and Moony could easily handle a small pack each. I could handle any stragglers.” He ignored the glare sent his way by Severus.
Dumbledore nodded solemnly. “They will still cause a problem but they are limited as you said. My main concern is the giants. I had hoped we could convince them otherwise. Seems a few are not willing to let old grudges go.”
“Giants are easily confused.”
Severus snorted. “They are still giants. One swing can wipe out an entire army.”
“Only if they can hit you.” Edge retorted.
“Not all of us have super speed.”
“Gentlemen.” Dumbledore chided. “Now is not the time.”
Severus crossed his arms. Edge rolled his eyes at the other man. Something was bothering the spy but he would have to wait until later. Severus did not appear to want to share his concerns with the old man at this time.
“As much as your offers of help are appreciated, Edge, even you cannot be in multiple places at once.” Dumbledore continued. “We shall let Voldemort go forward with his plans for now.”
Severus stepped forward in protest. “If he recruits Greyback…”
Dumbledore held up a hand. “He is already aware of there being spy in his circle. It will do us well not to antagonize him too much. I am assuming only the inner circle was present this evening?”
“Yes.” Severus stepped back as he realized what Dumbledore was implying.
“All the more reason to let this go forward. While the news is unsettling, it can be handled, if done with care.” Dumbledore turned his blue eyes onto Edge. “Your skills will be helpful. I am sure you know how to prepare the others?”
Edge nodded. “Of course.” This meant more training. He was going to have to get them into a group going forward.
Dumbledore nodded. “Is there anything else, Severus?”
Severus shook his head. “That was all the new information.”
The Headmaster sat silent a few moments as he gazed at Severus. “Very well. I shall speak with the Order. Get some rest.” And with that they were dismissed.
Edge waited until the gargoyle had moved back into place before speaking. “He tried getting into your mind at the end there.”
“I am aware. He did not succeed.” Came the short answer.
Edge grabbed Severus’ arm. “Something is bothering you. Talk.”
Severus jerked his arm from Edge’s grip. His eyes were wide and he started shivering slightly. Edge cursed and apologized to the other man. Severus took a few deep breaths before glaring at the vampire.
“I am fine. It’s getting better.”
“I can tell.” Edge said. “Doesn’t change that something else is bothering you.”
“Nothing is...” He curled his nose. “…bothering me.” His voice was filled with distaste toward the word.
“Sure. That’s why you keep snapping at me. I’m not a fool, Severus. I’ve learned your tactics.”
Severus raised an eyebrow. “Oh really?”
Edge sighed and moved away from the snarky man. He leaned against the stone wall by one of the windows overlooking the school grounds. He could just make out the lake in the dark. “I’m not going to force you to tell me anything. Just thought I would offer some help if I could.”
No sound was forthcoming. Severus said nothing but he did not walk away either. He was taking the statement seriously. Edge would count that as a small win.
“You know, there was a time once, I thought I’d never get to see Hogwarts.”
“What are you talking about?” The confusion in Severus’ voice made Edge smile softly. “Animalis need magical cores to transition, you said that yourself. So you were a wizard before you were turned.”
“I was yes.” Edge continued to look out the window.
“Then you had to go to school. You’re no more than a century and then some old. Hogwarts was here at that time.”
“Yes it was. Doesn’t mean I came to school here.”
It was silent a moment. Severus huffed under his breath. “Then where did you go?”
“Ilvermorny.”
Severus scoffed. “You are not American.”
Edge chuckled. “You’re right, I’m not.” He turned to look at the scowling wizard. “My father had to move to the States for work. I wasn’t happy with it but I was ten at the time so what could I do. We ended up coming back halfway through my last year. Instead of going through the hassle of enrolling here, I took the necessary exams and tested out. About a year later they decided to move back to the States permanently. I declined and here we are.”
Severus stared at Edge searchingly. “What house?”
Edge raised an eyebrow. It was clear Severus was giving him a test. He smirked amused. “Pukwudgie and Thunderbird chose me. I chose Pukwudgie.”
A silent pause. “Why are you telling me this?”
Edge shrugged turning back to the window. “Felt like it. I want you to trust me, Severus. How else will you do that if I don’t share information?” He turned back to the professor. “I can let you in if that will help.”
Severus shook his head. “I don’t make a habit of going diving into people’s minds. Why is it so important to you that I trust you?”
“I don’t have very many people in my life and I like you.” The vampire stated plainly.
“You like me?” The disbelieving expression and deadpan tone of voice made Edge roll his eyes.
“Yes, you snarky bastard, I like you. Do you really think I would put up with the bullshit if I didn’t? Honestly, I could have just gazed you long ago and saved myself the trouble.”
“No you couldn’t.” Severus sounded sure and matter of fact.
“Oh?” Now Edge was really amused.
“Of course not. You would have the first time you met me if you could have.”
Edge laughed. It was full of amusement and blue eyes sparkled with it. Severus found himself smirking to hold off a smile. Was he really enjoying this?
“That is true.” Edge still chuckled softly. “Dante was always the expert with mind magic. My mind abilities are limited.”
“Animalis have different abilities?”
“Of course. They align with the natural abilities had when human. Harry’s best subject is Defense so it makes sense that he is better with the physical abilities of being an Animalis. He’s fast, strong, and instinctual. Everything he has learned has been through instinct and need which is why he just seems to master some skills out of the blue while others take him time to master.”
Severus hummed. Explained why it took so long for Harry to even realize when he was gazing someone and yet transformed in his sleep. “And your skill set?”
“Healing and transference. You already witnessed transference when I had Sirius transfer my magic to you.”
Severus glared while Edge smirked unapologetically. “And healing? How does that work for an Animalis?”
Edge nodded. “I can show you, if you will let me.”
Severus eyed the vampire suspiciously. He nodded slowly.
Edge walked over to the nervous professor. “I’ll need to touch you. Anywhere will work.”
Severus held out a hand. Edge held it gently between the palms of his hands. He sighed softly and closed his eyes. Severus jerked when the initial brush of magic coursed through him. It was warm, not intense like his first taste of the vampires magic was, but soft and soothing. It spread throughout his body slowly as though caressing him. A few short moments passed before Edge stepped away from him taking his magic with him.
Edge blinked glowing blue eyes until the glow faded. “How do you feel?”
Severus thought a moment. Light traces of magic hummed along his skin. He felt relaxed in a way he hadn’t felt in years. His muscles no longer ached from being constantly tense with stress. The normal aches and pains of being in his late thirties were gone making him feel more early twenties. He glanced over at Edge to find the vampire looking a little more tired than before.
“You don’t use the ability much do you?”
Edge shook his head. “No. It takes a lot out of me. The worse the damage the more energy and magic it takes. I relieved most of the after effects of frequent Cruciatus you have endured. You must feel many years younger now.”
Severus nodded. “You did not need to do that. Not if it affects you so much.”
Edge waved him off. “I’ve healed worse and been okay. Compared to healing Padfoot during the moon yours was nothing.”
Severus found he was grateful none the less.
“Greyback is what worries me.”
“Greyback is a werewolf I’m assuming?”
“Yes. Fenrir Greyback. He enjoys preying on children. I find it hard to believe you have not heard of him.”
“I had heard of a werewolf that turned small children mostly for the fun of it. I believe Remus mentioned a Greyback before.” Edge had been disgusted by the rumors he had heard of the werewolf. He had never paid enough attention to catch a name though.
“They would be one in the same.” Severus began walking down the hall toward his rooms. Edge stepped up beside him after a few steps. “He’s a monster of a werewolf if there ever was one. All the horror stories are because of those like him.” He shivered involuntarily. “He enjoys killing; makes a game of it.”
Edge growled softly under his breath. “If I come across him, he won’t survive the war.”
Severus paused looking at the dark haired vampire. “You mean that.”
“A rabid wolf needs to be put down.” Edge said simply as though he was discussing the weather.
No more words were spoken between the two men as they continued to the dungeons. Edge accompanied Severus back to his rooms where Harry was waiting. Harry was visibly relieved that Severus returned unharmed. Edge couldn’t help but smile as he watched the two interact with each other. Harry was in full mother hen mode. Severus suffered through it a few minutes before he had enough snapping at the young vampire to knock it off or he wouldn’t be fed for the next week. Edge could hear the fondness in the empty threat and apparently so did Harry for he grinned at his Potions Professor even as he relented.
Edge bid them both good night before making his way to his own set of rooms. He only made it halfway before changing his direction having no desire to be alone. Silently, he made his way through the castle like he was one of the many ghosts that floated along its halls. Quietly, he entered the Defense professors rooms and settled himself on the sofa by the fireplace. The small fire came to life again as he got comfortable. House elf magic he assumed. Edge soaked up the warmth from the fire as he listened to the breathing of the two wolves in the other room. He allowed himself to relax as he watched the flames dance.
The war was going to progress quickly now. They would need to train hard to be ready in time.
He felt the pull of the sun rising a few short hours later and allowed his eyes to close.
His Childe and his wolves were safe. Severus was safe. For now, that would be enough. He would worry about the rest at sundown.
