Chapter 25
Beta'd by the most wonderful, amazing and stupendous Tenchi. Woman, you are the best and love you for all you do for me!
Watching as two Hitwizards led Snape away for transport to Azkaban, Amelia looked at Rufus and shook her head. It wasn't enough, she knew that, but it was the best they could do. And she felt sick over it. Not only had this gone on for years, but it was a case, if there ever was one, that warranted the ultimate punishment. That wasn't going to come. She knew what they did was for the best, to take out a menace that had been lurking under their nose who wrapped himself in goodness and righteousness, but it rankled. Quietly, she told Rufus, “It's not enough. It never will be. We can't take back what he did and give the victims back what they lost, let alone free them from the memories of the vile acts.”
“I feel like I need every cleaning charm there is,” Rufus admitted, looking down after he folded his arms over his chest. “We did the best we could, Amelia. Nothing we did, no matter what it was, would be enough in this case. He—bloody hell. Like most that do this, he perfected what he did over the years and made sure his victims were intimidated enough that if they did remember they wouldn't say a word. All we can do is what we are; making sure he is never a free man. And going after the one that protected and enabled him.”Nodding slowly, Amelia sighed. “So much needs changed. We all know what he was like when he taught. Everyone let it go on since he started, never looking into it. That needs to stop too. So much of our Ministry and the school system needs to change so this never has a chance to happen again.”“It probably already has,” Rufus told her honestly, still staring at the floor. Shaking his head, he sighed, “I doubt he's the only one that ever used his teaching position to extract sex from students. We both know what these perverts are like. Hopefully, someone can push the Board of Governors to put rules in place to allow them to do something when accusations are made, background checks, something more to protect students.”“I'm going to send a private memo to Wienstein and Angus about that to see what they can push the Board to do. With all that's going on, it will probably work. Either that, or make the suggestion public so that the Board can't forget it. It'll only help.” Shaking her head, Amelia stiffened then said, “Alright, enough grousing and wallowing, we have work to do. Get one of the Aurors to alert us when Snape is secured. Once he is, we arrest Albus. I'll get the warrant while you attend to that. Send Wallias a message to let him know that it's coming and to prepare. I want him in custody as fast as we can manage it. And I want both of us there when we take him. He may go quietly, but I want him aware that both of us know what's going on and are behind this.”Face taking on a firm look, Rufus nodded, “Consider it done.” Quickly, he swept out to attend to that task, looking forward to putting the cuffs on the old man and seeing the look on his face as he did it. The time for retribution had come and he was looking forward to watching it.
Looking around, Albus sighed. Everything was packed and ready to go, all contained in one small satchel. Sighing softly, he ran the plan through his head once more. It was a simple one, of course, so that nothing could go wrong. Fawkes would take him to the continent, a small place in Paris a friend of his owned. From there he would work with what he could to find Harry. He would have to hide, of course, and be more covert than he was used to, but he would manage. While doing that, he would gather those that resided on the continent for help in doing what was needed. It wouldn't be the same as what he had here or as good, but he could manage. Then he just had to wait for this storm to blow over before returning. It may take a year or so, but it would eventually. As it did, he would work behind the scenes to help put someone in place that would deal with him. He knew several that would take his word for what was going on once he laid out the evidence he had.
Sighing, taking another quick walk around the house to make absolutely sure that he had everything, he kept a running list of all he needed to do while in exile. There was so much there and even more riding on him pulling it off that he had to make sure that it was done just right. On top of that, he was sad that he was having to run. It shouldn't have come to this. There was second guessing, of course, as anyone would expect, wondering where he had gone wrong with his plans to have brought about this result. He also made a mental note to see if he couldn't ferret out just who in Merlin's name was helping Harry. Honestly, he had no idea who would have the clout or power to get Harry in to see the French Minister then hide him. Only a few names came to mind as those that might be able to pull that off, but they weren't ones he was even considering. After all, Harry wouldn't have anything to do with them and considered them, rightfully so, the enemy. When he was sure he had everything, he sighed. Pulling out his wand, he activated the wards that locked the house down then called Fawkes. Grabbing the satchel, he held onto the phoenix's tail and waited. There was a flash bang, as always, but they didn't go anywhere. Frowning, looking at the bird, which appeared ruffled and disgruntled, he wondered what was going on. Shaking his head, he encouraged the phoenix to try again, but the result was the same. Just as he was about to try to detect what was going on, the wards shimmered then fell.Startled, he drew his wand and cast several spells to detect what might be going on. It was then his heart quickened. It was the DMLE locking everything down, pulling down his wards. Oh, this wasn't good!
Stepping into the house behind the mass of Aurors and Hitwizards, Amelia looked at Albus as Wallias and Rufus held him at wandpoint. Eyes flitting to the satchel and the phoenix that was flapping around in a panic, she said, softly, crossing her arms over her chest, “Going somewhere, Albus?”
“Amelia,” Albus sighed, shaking his shaggy head. “I was relocating, yes.”“Oh, I don't think so,” she told him with a grim smile, straightening up and stiffening her spine, “Albus Dumbledore, you're under arrest. The list of charges will be read to you when we get you to the Ministry. I would suggest that you don't try to fight. We have a warrant that states we can use all the force we need to take you into custody.” Glancing at the equally grim Rufus, she said, “Take his wand and secure it.”“Gladly,” Rufus told her, stepping forward and relieving the aging wizard of his wand once he was certain Wallias and all the others were making sure the man couldn't do anything. Once in his possession, he sent it on to the Ministry, securing it in a locked location.Glancing around, Albus sighed. It appeared that every Hitwizard and Auror the Ministry had on staff was here, including several retired ones. If it was only a small number of them, he would attempt to flee. This—no, he couldn't manage. Not only did they put up the wards to ensure there was no escape in any way, but also magic dampening ones. It was best to go peacefully then work from there. Shaking his head sadly, he held out his hands for the cuffs. “You don't know what you're doing, Amelia. You are giving someone an advantage he doesn't need.”Snorting, Amelia said, “At this time, you need to worry more about what trouble you're in, Albus, than any of your plotting.” Looking around, she said, “Take him and secure him. I want him under Hitwizard watch. Call in the best solicitor we can get our hands on to represent him.” Seeing nods, she stepped back and motioned for them to get on with it.Signaling all his crew forward, Wallias took one of Albus' arms and had Rufus take the other. When the head of the Aurors nodded to him, he activated the Portkey to take them directly to the secured area they had set up ahead of time. Finally, the end was in sight. When they left, Amelia sighed and shook her head. Looking at those that remained, she said, “The team charged with gathering evidence get to it. The rest of you head back to the Ministry. I'll have the wardmasters lock everything down. By the book, ladies and gentleman. We don't want to give him any advantages in court.” Seeing firm nods, she swept out then Apparated away. There was still much to do tonight. First, she had to alert Angus and Wienstein that the old man was in custody. Then came working with him. That would be the worst. However, it felt good to do this and made it seem like they were finally doing the right thing, even if it was far too late for those hurt the most by this mess.
Flanked by Angus and Rufus, with Wallias and all his crew standing behind them, Amelia looked at Albus. The old man had conferred with the solicitor provided him and was now ready to talk. Motioning for the man to get on with it, she waited.
“What are you proposing here?” Albus asked, folding his hands on the table looking between the two. He'd had the charges read to him, something he knew wasn't good, so he wanted to see what they were going to offer before pressing on.“We aren't proposing anything, Albus,” Angus told him softly, but with a bite to his voice. “There is no deal and won't be one. All we're doing here is giving you an idea of what we're charging you with, nothing more than that. You'll be in front of the panel you were once on in the morning and I'm asking that no bail be granted as we're still looking at charges coming your way. That's all there is to it.”Sighing, Albus shook his head sadly. “I understand the evidence you have on some of this, from what you presented. Most you won't get anywhere with as those memories can't be used in court. I would suggest that we see what we can manage to put this to rest. There is more at stake here than you could ever imagine.”With a feral smile, Amelia pushed over a copy of the legislation she got through to use with Snape. “That's where you're wrong, Albus. I managed to get that through to prosecute Snape.” Seeing him take it, and look startled, she said, “Yes, Albus, we can, and plan to, use those memories. Not only that, we have plenty of witnesses. Snape gave you up to save himself from being Kissed. Arabella Figg gave us everything she had. Moody talked to save his pension. The list goes on and on. We have plenty to use to prosecute you. And we will do so. By the time we're done, you're going to finally learn that you are not above the law.”“You do not get to plan for people to die, Albus, especially a teenage boy,” Rufus told him, voice a low snarl. “That is just one of the charges. There are plenty more. Everything you've done will come out, whether we can prosecute for it or not. And we're making damned sure everyone knows what you did.”Folding his hands on the table, Cuthbert Lucas, the solicitor of record for Albus, looked at those across the table and asked, voice soft, “Is there any chance of a deal of some kind?”“No,” Angus said firmly, shaking his head. “We are not dealing. At this point, the investigation is still ongoing. What charges you see so far are the ones we're sure we can win. There are plenty of others we're still looking into. We just wanted him in custody so he couldn't take a runner. As he was doing just that, it shores up us getting him no-bailed. With all that's going on, no one, anywhere, is going to ponder a deal. And I plan to go for a full trial, unless he pleads guilty to every charge we level at him. That's all there is.”Sighing, Albus looked across the table and said, “Look into Voldemort being back. Do what you will with me, but someone needs to keep an eye on that. He is back and gathering his followers. Harry has to face him. What's in his scar has to be removed.”“Don't worry yourself about your plots, plans and schemes, Albus,” Amelia told him coldly. “You need to worry about the years you're facing in Azkaban. Mr. Potter is to be left alone, by everyone. You've done enough to him. Don't draw him into your schemes or try to point us that way. We have plenty to worry about here that we're not going to chase shadows on your word, something that is almost worthless at this point.” Lifting her chin, she added, “Now, unless you have something more to add, we're going to book you and put you in a cell.”Looking crestfallen, Albus shook his head, “Just keep an eye on the signs. He's back and gaining power.”“We'll take that as a no,” Angus told him, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. Though he wanted the man to lay out why he did this and what 'evidence' he had pointing there, he wasn't going to do that. No, that would jeopardize the trial and he knew Lucas wouldn't allow it. Standing, he said, “Book him and put him in a cell. Make sure he's under Hitwizard watch.”“Just keep an eye out, promise me that,” Albus said, standing as the Hitwizards cuffed him once more. “You need to talk to Harry and convince him to come back. He has to fight this battle. You don't know what's at stake here.”Though she wanted to respond, Amelia didn't. Instead, she stood and walked out, followed by Rufus. Once the door was shut, she said, “I think someone needs to get him checked by a Mind Healer before trial. I understand he thinks he has evidence for this and there is what Snape said, but to cover our hindquarters, we want to make sure there isn't senility involved.”“I'll make sure of it,” Angus said with a firm nod. “Though, after that, I'm sure Lucas will insist anyway. Alright, we have him. Now we press on. I'll go brief Wienstein and get on the paperwork. We'll have him in front of the panel first thing in the morning then move forward from there. Now we concentrate on Fudge.”Pleased that this was finally falling in place, Amelia nodded. “I'm going home. If you need me, Floo.” Seeing nods, she strode out. Maybe, for the first time since this mess started, she might be able to get a full night's sleep. She wasn't counting on it, but she thought that she might rest better than she had up to this point. After all, they were doing what they should have so long ago.
Coming into the small living room area where Black and Lupin were playing chess with Narcissa seated on the couch, Tom cleared his throat. When the three looked at him, he said, a grim smile on his face, “I have some news I want to pass along. I'll send it to Lucius with an elf when I'm done.” Seeing the wary looks, he said, glancing around, “Snape pleaded guilty to all the charges and is in Azkaban for the rest of his life under Dementor guard. He gave up everything he had on Albus to save himself from being Kissed.”
“Still too good for him,” Sirius snarled, shaking his head. He was relieved the man was paying though. That was one less problem to worry about.“You'll get no argument from any of us, Sirius,” Tom told him softly. Smirking, he pressed on, “And they arrested Albus just as he was about to flee the country. From what I was just told, he's in custody at the Ministry under Hitwizard watch and will go in front of the panel in the morning. They are pushing for no bail on him. So, he's in custody and won't be getting out any time soon.” Smiling, he said, “Harry is safe from him, at least for now. I just thought you would all like to know.”Pleased with that, Sirius nodded. “Good, Bastard needs the book thrown at him.”“From what I was just told, that's what's going to happen. My contact passed along that they are making it clear no deals are being offered to him. And they want him to go to trial. That's going to bring everything out.”Smiling, Remus nodded but said nothing. That pleased him. It didn't undo the damage and horror Harry had to live though, but justice was coming, for what it was worth. In the future, that would mean something to Harry. Now? No, there was too much hurt there for that to happen. It would come though and Harry would like it.
Holding his young man close, with Harry’s head resting on his shoulder, they were sprawled out on his massive bed, the Gothic one he had wanted, while Padfoot snoozed on the foot of it. He glanced at the note an elf had delivered not long ago, pleased with what it contained. Good! Running his fingers through Harry's hair, he said, softly, “I'm going to save all of this, including the papers, for you to look at some time in the future. I know you don't want to now, but you will.”
Nodding, Harry sighed, “At some point I probably will. Just don't expect it any time soon.”“I think, right now, you're doing what is best,” Lucius told him softly. “For now, you need a chance to deal with the upheaval. Later, you need to face it, Harry, all of it. It's going to hurt, anger you, cause a myriad of emotions, but you need to do it. Some you won't like, but I guarantee there are parts you will. You don't know what you've caused in Britain. And what's coming of it you'll adore. You know Tom and me. We're working with what's happening, planning to put in place a system that works and is fair. You've helped us with that, immeasurably. You've also brought your godfather's case to the forefront and I'm betting he's going to get a pardon.”“That's the good part,” Harry admitted, draping an arm over Lucius and holding onto him. “It never should have happened.”“No, it shouldn't. And I can almost guarantee it won't ever again,” Lucius told him firmly. “I'll be there with you every step of the way, that I promise as well. It's not going to be easy. I won't lie to you and say it will, but you'll get through it. What's coming won't be worse than what you've been through.”“I know,” Harry said softly, shutting his eyes. “I just can't face it now. Give me a week or so and I'll see what I can start doing there.”“We have all the time in the world to do that,” Lucius told him softly, holding him close. “I just don't want you to hide forever. That won't do you any good. You didn't go through all of this just to hide yourself from the world. You've given yourself a new life, so it's one you need to enjoy. That, more than anything, will prove that nothing any of these fools did could break you. It just means we press on and enjoy from here. There's no more drama from that side, no more being drawn in, no more manipulations. Oh, I'm sure there are going to be new problems and issues will come up, but we'll deal with them.”“True,” Harry told him, voice slightly firmer as he thought about all he could do now that he wasn't being drawn into so much. “I think, maybe, next week we need to start exploring. Well, me, Sirius and Remus. I've heard so much about France, but have never been here. And I want to go to Paris to see what all is there.”“And that's something you can easily do,” Lucius assured him. “We'll make sure someone goes with the three of you to keep you safe. A glamour is a good idea for now. Soon you won't have to employ that. It's your new life, one you had to suffer plenty for to get, so it's time you enjoyed it. Narcissa can easily help you find many things to do. She's well acquainted with all that France has to offer in the way of entertainment and things to see. Ask her and I'm quite certain she'll be happy to show you many things you never knew were there.”“I think I'll do that,” Harry told him with a smile, looking up at him.Rubbing his young man's head, Lucius said, softly, “This weekend, we want to go to Calais for supper, once Draco is home. All of us. Including Sirius and Remus. It'll do all of us good to go out.” Lowering his voice, he said, keeping it soothing, “Draco comes home tomorrow. We're going to bring him over here once he knows what is really going on. There won't be anything foolish on his end, I promise.”“I'll handle it,” Harry sighed. He knew this part was coming, but was apprehensive about it. After all, Draco was Lucius' son so he was going to be involved here. It was just the unknown coming up to it was all.“We'll deal accordingly, but I assure you that there won't be problems,” Lucius told him. Kissing Harry on the top of the head after he nodded, Lucius began to rub his back. “On the upside of everything, we're together. Nothing, nowhere, is going to separate us now. Once this mess starts to settle in Britain, I'm moving everything here, other than some items to make it look good. Narcissa and I have already discussed that and she approves. So, we'll be together just like we talked about. Once things settle, we're going to divorce. That will take time, though.”“I understand that part, don't worry about it,” Harry said, smiling a little. Softly, he told him, “Of all the rottenness here, this is good. It's not going to be easy, what with this mess, but we get to be together. That's worth it.” Shutting his eyes, he sighed then added, voice quiet, “I love you, Lucius. And thank you for everything. You're wonderful.”Smiling at that, giving Harry a squeeze, Lucius told him, “And I you, Harry. And there is nothing to thank me for.”Shifting around, Harry lifted up slightly and kissed Lucius, wrapping his arms around him. After breaking it off, he rested his head on his shoulder then said, “You know, for an evil git, you're great.”Giving an amused snort, Lucius smirked, “I have my moments, especially with you.” Changing topics, he asked, “So, what have you decided on the living room and decorating? You told me you have something in mind, but aren't sure about it. What's that?”Snuggling up close to Lucius, Harry began to tell him about the odd idea that had come to him while looking through some magazines and turning it into something that looked like a rustic interior. Though there were plenty of problems and he was trying to deal the best he could, being held by the man he loved seemed to make them slide to the background. He felt safe with Lucius and was sure that it would all work out in the end. It would just take time. That he had, plenty of it.
