A few months pass and fortunately Voldemort still has not returned from his quest for the Elder Wand. Remus appears unexpectedly at the house one afternoon, to give her some photos of the twins that Andromeda had sent. As she's looking at them, he catches her eye and raises an eyebrow at her slightly swollen belly; it's not quite defined enough yet for him to be sure that she hasn't just gained some weight.
He has been the one person that she’s least looked forward to eventually having to tell; because other than her father, Sirius was Lupin’s oldest and closest friend, and she’s been afraid of what Remus’s reaction that she has fallen in love with someone else would be.
Sighing, she confirms his unspoken question, saying, “Yes, I am pregnant. But I can’t tell you who the father is. I’m sorry, Remus, it would just be too much of a danger for him for anyone to know. Even Ron and Hermione don’t know.”
He raises an eyebrow even more at this, knowing that the three of them have really never had secrets from one another. But, it reminds him that he has news of his own as well, and he smiles and says, “Actually, Tonks and I are expecting as well. Very soon, in fact.” A shadow of pain also crosses his face after he’s said this, and she wonders why he’d feel pain over it when clearly he’s also thrilled about it.
But his face grows serious again immediately, and what he says next isn’t what she’d expected, although in retrospect given McGonagall’s reaction, she knows she should have expected it. He says, “We must get you away from here, Evie. Just because nobody has checked here yet doesn’t mean they never will. The rumor of you being at the Burrow has been effective so far, they’ve tried there several times and we’ve fought them off, but eventually they’ll find out you aren’t there. What if Snape comes here and finds out that you are pregnant?”
Evie feels completely trapped and has no idea how to get out of this. Finally she says, “It’s no different, Remus – I can still hide like we planned, the cloak will still cover me.” She also has to fight off a semi-hysterical urge to laugh out loud and tell him that Snape already knows, it’s his child, dammit.
Remus shakes his head and says, “It’s not the same. If it’s just you, you’ll hide rather than fight. But if you know your child is at stake, you’ll likely take risks that you wouldn’t take just for yourself. And it’s not just that, it’s what they could do to you, the ways they could torture you. We’ve got to get you out of here, in fact go gather up some things and you can stay with us until we can find someplace better.”
She doesn’t move, clearly not wanting to go, and Remus says, “Come on, Evie – we can find someplace that your new love can still join you if that’s what you’re objecting to. We’ll keep the Order away if you don’t feel we can keep the secret well enough.” His face falls a bit as he says this, obviously he is more than a little hurt that she feels she can’t trust him with that information.
Casting about desperately in her mind for any other argument she can make, fearing that Remus will just take her anyway if she can’t convince him, she hears the front door open.
She immediately reacts, grabbing her wand and casting Immobilus on Remus. She gives him a strange beseeching look and tells him that she’s sorry, and he cannot comprehend why she’s done it; until Snape walks into the kitchen from the doorway just behind her.
Remus’s eyes widen and he begins to wonder whether Evie herself has somehow changed sides, or maybe is under an Imperius curse; her first action was to disable him rather than to protect herself, and it’s clear that she’s not the least bit surprised at Snape’s appearance, she hasn’t even turned to see who it was. He wonders if he’s about to die, and thinks of his own unborn child, that he may now never even see.
Snape’s reaction is purely and immediately back to his former self again; he walks up to Remus and sneers at him, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he says, “Well, well, well…Lupin. Here to console the grieving widow, are we? Hoping she’ll turn to you, now that she's had a bit of time to get over the death of your dear friend Sirius? I do seem to recall that you showed quite a predisposition towards her company, when she was a student...”
Remus of course cannot reply, as Evie had used the full immobilization curse on him; but he narrows his eyes warningly and is clearly furious over the insinuation of why he’s there.
Severus glares back at him, but realizing that Remus can’t speak he turns to Evie. He is still obviously very angry, feeling betrayed, and asks in a very tight voice what Remus is doing here, alone with her.
She looks at him steadily and says, “Legilimency, Severus. Even the slightest hint of a misunderstanding right now could have terrible consequences, for all of us. Please…please…take a look for yourself before you do or say anything else.”
She puts two memories uppermost in her mind in preparation; Remus’s arrival today, and the morning after she agreed to marry him, when she told him that she felt as though he was the part of her soul that she’d never even realized she was missing.
He looks at her for a long moment, tight-lipped, and then pulls out his wand and reluctantly casts the spell; not sure he really wants to see what he fears he might, but knowing that he has to know the truth all the same.
He watches the events through her memory, up to the moment he walked in; Remus bringing her the photos of the twins, telling her that he and Tonks (Snape didn’t even know they had married, it hadn’t come up in conversation since he and Evie had gotten back together and of course he’s also been away from the Order for some time) are expecting, her telling him that she cannot reveal who the father of her child is, even when she can see the hurt in Lupin’s face that he feels she doesn’t trust him enough to tell him.
He can feel her panicked, trapped reaction to Remus’s declaration that she must leave Grimmauld Place, can feel her fear that Remus might even take her bodily away, essentially kidnapping her (for her own good, as he saw it) if she couldn’t find a good enough argument to sway him. Her sudden terror that she could be completely cut off from him, unable even to tell him where she’d gone, and why.
And following that, her fear in knowing how frantic he'd likely be when he came here and found her gone, and her fear that he might jeopardize his own cover too much in trying to find her; especially if he naturally assumed the Death Eaters had taken her. And finally the other memory she’d also pushed to the forefront, so that he’d see again all the love she felt and still feels for him; clearly wanting him to see beyond any shadow of a doubt that no-one can take his place in her heart, now or ever.
He closes his eyes as he withdraws from her mind, the raw emotion in her memories melting his heart and erasing his anger and doubt completely; making him feel very ashamed that he doubted her, even for a moment.
Without opening his eyes, he reaches out for her and she comes into his arms immediately. He crushes her to him, as Remus can still only watch and try to make sense of what he’s seeing. He has little doubt at this point that it is Severus’s child she is carrying; he can’t doubt the love he’s seeing between them, but he still has plenty of doubts about how it came to be.
Finally Snape looks at her and, his voice breaking, he says “Evie…” She puts a finger to his lips and nods, she knows he’s trying to apologize and she is telling him that it isn’t necessary, she understands fully why he reacted that way.
Looking into his eyes, she says, “Severus…you have to tell him; in fact you’ll probably have to show at least some of it to him or he’ll never believe that you haven’t just influenced me at a weak point, or worse, have me under some kind of magical coercion. I know you don’t want to, but he’s not Sirius or my father, and you know he isn’t; you kept his secret when he was teaching at Hogwarts, and even made his potions for him, he told me.”
Snape looks down at her and caresses her face gently, and finally nods. She’s right, and however much he doesn’t want to have to share anything of himself with Remus, the only alternative would be for them to keep Remus a captive, or else risk that he’ll tell the rest of the Order and they’ll be after both of them relentlessly (to get Evie away from him). Remus isn’t going to take Phineas’s word as McGonagall did; nor does he have access to Dumbledore’s portrait to confirm it like she did.
Snape releases her and goes over to Lupin, looking him in the eye. He says, “I know you have no reason to trust me, and every reason not to. But I also know that whatever our past differences, you are a man of your word, and I know that you are only worried about Evie. If you will give me your word that you will look at what I have to show you, before deciding that Evie is in danger and trying to Apparate her away, I’ll have her release you. Blink once if you agree.”
Remus gives him a penetrating look, and then looks over at Evie, who looks back at him pleadingly; then finally looks back at Snape and blinks once, slowly.
Evie releases the spell, and Remus just waits, not saying anything even though he can now. Snape says they should go to the study, where the Pensieve is. He begins pulling out memories, muttering an incantation over each one as he drops them in; still making it so that each can only be viewed once (fortunately Remus does recognize the incantation himself, so does not worry that Snape is trying to alter any of the memories he’s pulling out).
Severus gives him what he feels is the minimum needed to convince him. Dumbledore’s curse and the explanation of why Snape must kill him; the events the night he killed him, including Dumbledore’s plea to him; the night that he called Evie a true friend and admitted to Dumbledore that he despaired of losing her friendship over what he must do, and Dumbledore’s promise to him that he’d make sure Evie had to hear him out afterwards; Dumbledore’s portrait’s reaction, a smile and congratulations, when he told Dumbledore that Evie was pregnant with his child. He considers for a moment and then adds one more; Evie telling him that she loves him and will marry him, love and tears shining in her eyes. He knows that last probably isn’t necessary, but he can’t help it; he wants Lupin to see it for a combination of reasons, some worthy and some not.
Turning back to Remus, he says, “That should be enough, for now. You should know how uncomfortable I am with this as it is. If it isn’t enough, there is more that Evie has seen, that explains where my loyalties lie and why; but I do not want to share them if I don’t have to.”
Remus looks at Evie and she nods slowly in confirmation of what he’s said. Snape says he’ll be in the kitchen if they need him, and leaves; and Remus goes over to the Pensieve, immersing himself in Snape’s memories.
