Chapter 25
“Narcissa,” Remus said, nodding to where she sat at the other end of the table, “sanitized all the information we have on the bonds. Lucius and I doubled checked to ensure nothing slipped through that we don’t want Albus to see. Then we commandeered Hedwig and sent it off to Albus.”
“Our hope is he can help put something together we can’t,” Lucius added, looking around.
“We’ll keep plugging away, of course,” Narcissa tossed in, smiling.
After a nod of agreement, Bill said, “While we need plenty, maybe narrowing our focus might be for the best. It won’t give us all the answers, but might help.”
“What do you mean?” Sirius asked, not sure. Arm slipping around Harry, he pulled him close. Harry appeared as though he was listening, focusing on Bill, brow furrowed.
“We have the longest tether. While no one can recreate the relationships we have to manage the way we’ve done, the hints are there that everyone can use. I say everyone work on the tether and relegate what the other parts mean until later.”
Once he exchanged looks with Remus and Narcissa, Lucius gave a slow nod. “Yes—let’s go that route. Whatever we can put together from there will only help everyone and make our lives less complex.”
“We will,” Remus agreed, making a note of it on his ever-present parchment. “We’ll impart this to everyone tonight at tea.”
“You three will be at the Healer’s tonight, won’t you?” Narcissa asked while Remus took notes and conferred with Lucius.
“Yes,” Sirius told her. “And this one will take longer than normal because of the scan he wants to do.”
“We’ll plan for it,” Remus said, noting that as well.
Harry waited for a bit of a lull then said, quietly, “I have a suggestion about something. It’s an idea I’ve been tossing about, though I don’t know if it’ll work.”
“What about?” Remus asked, giving Harry a reassuring smile to encourage him.
“Not about the bond, but for Lucius during the full moon,” Harry explained, glancing at the man mentioned.
“Any and all suggestions about the topic are something we want to hear,” Lucius told him, wanting to find out what this was about. While the night had gone fine, they wanted a better solution.
A sheepish look on his face, rubbing the back of his neck, Harry mumbled, “It’s not something that will work right away as it’ll take time to do.”
“What’s that?” Bill asked, encouragingly, putting a hand on Harry’s back, giving it a reassuring pat.
“Sirius once told me they became Animagus to stay with Remus during the full moon because they couldn’t be infected if hurt. While it’ll take time and might end up for naught if they get the tether they need, it might be worth a try,” Harry explained then looked around.
“Damned good suggestion,” Sirius told Harry, giving him a squeeze. Looking around at everyone, he added, “I still have the books we used and can help. As old and powerful as Lucius is, he should manage quickly.”
Lucius didn’t even need to think it over. “Yes, I’ll try. It can only help.”
“We’ll set aside an hour or so a night to work on it,” Remus smiled, very pleased with the suggestion since it hadn’t dawned on either him or Sirius with everything going on. He then added, “That was very helpful, Harry. Thank you.”
“Anytime,” Harry replied softly, looking sheepish.
“Find the books for me today, if you would, Sirius, and I’ll start reading them tonight,” Lucius said, smiling as well. “If I can manage, it will be most helpful and I won’t end up concerned about accidental infection.”
After a nod, Sirius asked, changing topics, “Is Draco going to sign the papers for the internship, do you know?”
“My understanding is he’s signing them today,” Lucius snorted, looking amused. “I doubt there is any power out there which could deter him from this path. As Charlie is now his legal guardian, they can tend to it today.”
“Yup, another one!” Bill laughed, shaking his head. “They’ll make a good couple since they now have a mutual obsession.”
“He does sound rather enthused about this venture,” Remus added, sounding amused.
“It’s a rather dangerous job, but a good, respectable one,” Narcissa chimed in. She was still fretting over the danger involved, but wouldn’t say a word about it, counting on Charlie to protect her son.
Everyone then began to discuss other matters related to the mess to see what they could suss out though they doubted they would come up with anything new.
As Severus paced in the back room of the joke shop, he had a book open in his hands and was looking at it, but not reading like normal. Instead, his mind was on what he was trying to accomplish with the twins.
By now he was pondering what the two mentioned about being together for the rest of their lives. They were correct, of course. Like it nor not, and he sure didn’t, it was the truth. Eventually everything would come out. Would it be so bad to answer the questions from them to hear the information he wanted and needed to piece together so much? By now he was leaning towards it wouldn’t end up horrific since they couldn’t impart what they discussed or heard.
The downside was if he did figure out what he wanted to know he couldn’t pass it along to Albus. He was damned certain some of what he would learn Albus would need for so much.
Pacing faster, he thought over the quandary, but didn’t see a solution to passing it along. That bothered him. With a scowl, he threw himself into the nearest chair and put his book on the table. Head dropping back, he shut his eyes and let out a sigh. After ordering his thoughts, he focused on the problem and tried to sort it out.
He tuned out the noise from the front then honed in on the biggest issues. After a good fifteen minutes, he let out a resigned sigh. From what he could tell, he wouldn’t get what he wanted completely at this point, so he thought he should press on and get what he could. Once he heard what they had to say, he would then work on allowing him to tell Albus if it was something he felt the old man needed to know. It was best to know what they did then press on.
Once more picking up the book, he began to flip through it, looking for the spell he had been examining before. While he did, he began honing the arguments he would need for the twins. With those two it wasn’t as easy as with most, so he needed to prepare plenty.
After sliding into a corner during a lull in business, Fred put up a privacy ward then told his brother, “Right, I think it’s time to press Severus a tad more.”
“Agreed,” George nodded. “I say we make this more enticing by dropping hints about some of what we know.
“Oh yes! Perfect!” Fred grinned. “It should make him mental then move him in the direction we want.”
“It should,” George agreed, grinning himself. “We can see if Lucius has any suggestions on how to poke so we can motivate him in the direction we need since he knows him well.”
“We’ll compose something and send it off now,” Fred told him, summing parchment and a quill.
Heads together as they composed the letter, they worked on strategy of what they would do with Severus to move him the direction they wanted.
When Charlie handed the papers over to Lucius, he grinned. “We signed for the internship today. I read them through and there’s nothing wonky in them, just what we discussed.”
After seeing the huge happy grin on Draco’s face, Lucius smiled a bit then began to read through the contract. “It all looks good to me. What all are they taking on or are they only doing part with us picking up the rest?”
“Everything,” Charlie assured him. “All the classes. Once we have a workable tether, he’ll start in on regular classes and working with various areas. Until then he’ll learn the basics of dealing with dragons and the spells we use. That will keep him plenty busy.” When he saw a startled, concerned look on Narcissa’s face, he grinned then held up his hand. “Nothing to worry about. All of us will be right there with him and will keep him safe.”
“Good,” She sighed, though she was still concerned. After all, dragons were dangerous and Charlie had plenty of scars from dealing with them to prove it.
“Don’t worry, Mother; I’ll be fine,” Draco said. “Everyone makes sure I stay safe. I won’t be doing anything dangerous for quite some time.”
“I understand,” Narcissa told her son with a soft smile. It would just take some time to grow used to what her son was doing and the danger.
After a sip of tea, Charlie glanced around then asked, “Bill, Sirius, and Harry are going to the Healer appointment?”
“They left just minutes before you came in,” Remus said with a smile. “Nothing to worry about. As they are doing that scan tonight, they’ll be gone for quite some time.”
“Understood,” Charlie replied. Then he began asking about anything they needed to know so they stayed abreast of what was going on with so much.
After making copies of the information Remus sent, Albus passed them to the three people in front of his desk. For now it was just Minerva, Alastor, and Filius. Though Filius wasn’t a member of the Order, his expertise in this area was something they needed, so he talked him into it.
As the three looked at the cover letter Remus sent, he launched in. “This is all the information they have, other than some personal, private areas. As you can see, they have plenty of information, but haven’t been able to piece it together much other than some minor areas. As they need help, I want to see if we can give them a hand and can spot something they haven’t.”
“There is a lot of information there,” Filius mused distractedly as he flipped though the parchments. “I should be able to come up with something in a few days once I read through everything carefully.” He said as he read snippets of what was there.
“Take your time,” Albus told him. “Just so we can come up with something or see it in a way they can’t.” Looking around, he added, “The same with you two as well. I don’t think there is a spell to help, unfortunately, but we might see something which can give them hints or a hand.”
“I’ll do what I can,” Minerva assured him as she glanced through the parchments.
“I’ll see what I can dig up at home,” Alastor grunted, brow furrowed as he looked through what was there.
“Between all of us, I’m sure we can find something to help,” Albus nodded. He felt it was imperative to find something so he could talk or write to Severus so he could get a full assessment of what was going on. Because of so much, he needed to know so he could shift plans or find another way to go about what he was planning. That was needed, in plenty of ways.
With a tired groan, Remus took a seat in the chair by Lucius. Though not as worn out as the first few days after the full moon, he would tire more easily for a couple more days. As it was better, it wasn’t a hardship. Leaning over, he glanced at what his partner was reading then chuckled. “The letter from the twins?” He asked, though it was obvious.
“Oh yes,” Lucius told him, smirking. “Trying to figure out the best information to give them so they can get what they need at a maximum speed. With the spell he mentioned, they can get quite a lot of information we all need.”
“Agreed,” Remus nodded, putting a hand on Lucius’ knee, giving it a squeeze. Then he suggested, “We might want to also include suggestions regarding topics we need to know about to give them a guide of sorts.”
“We’ll include it,” Lucius nodded, highly pleased with the suggestion. Putting a hand over Remus’, giving it a squeeze, he imparted, “I’ll work on what they asked for and you can tackle the other.” Brow furrowed, he asked, “The three are going to come see us when they return, aren’t they?”
“Of course,” Remus told him. Then he asked, “Why?”
“We’ll have them look over what we come up with to see if they can suggest anything else. After all, Harry and Bill were more in the middle of the muddle and might have ideas we don’t.”
“Excellent suggestion! One we’ll use,” Remus smiled, pleased.
“Let me get this hammered out and send it off with an elf. I’ll ensure to add we’re coming up with suggestions about what to ask as well. We’ll send that off tomorrow while they’re at the shop so they don’t take more of a chance of Severus seeing it.”
“Another good idea,” Remus told him, adoring the feeling of Lucius’ hand over his. “Not to sound egotistical or smug, but we make a good pair when it comes to such matters.”
“We do,” Lucius agreed, looking a tad smug. “Quite efficient in tackling issues and organization.”
“We are,” Remus nodded, leaning against Lucius, smiling. Though, like everyone else affected, this wasn’t what he wanted and hadn’t even pondered any kind of relationship with Lucius, he adored it. It felt closer and more intimate than any other relationship, even the one with Tonks. As there was nothing he could do to change it, he would enjoy it.
Still smiling, Remus turned his head then kissed Lucius. The sensations a normal kiss between the two of them produced, the tingling and the hair on his body standing up, was something he loved in plenty of ways. Even the passionate encounters with Tonks hadn’t produced these kinds of sensations and feelings.
Lucius leaned into the kiss, an arm slipping around him and pulling him close. He, too, adored the feeling, more than he cared to admit. It was also fairly arousing. However, he wasn’t ready to take this a step further yet.
Remus broke the kiss off then smiled at Lucius. With a trembling hand, he reached out and stroked Lucius’ hair. Softly, he said, “That was rather nice.” He was aroused by it, but chose to ignore the reaction.
“It was,” Lucius nodded, straightening up. Though he wasn’t sure he could concentrate like normal, he would try.
Picking up the letter again, he began to talk with Remus about what he was going to suggest to the twins to see if Remus might know some as well. Though he kept thinking about the kiss, he pressed on.
Eyes locked on what Charlie was doing, Draco leaned against him, paying close attention as what Charlie was showing him he needed to know. They were going over his gear. It was things like the correct way to wear it and how to do repairs. The repairs he didn’t need yet, but wanted a foundation for when he did.
After Charlie finished, Draco nodded. “I think I understand the basics. You’ll probably need to show me again when I need it.”
“I will, no worries,” Charlie assured him. “It’s something that takes time to master. For now, we need to worry more about your gear and that you have it on right. It’s one of the first things they teach you so you stay safe.”
“Understood,” Draco nodded. Though Charlie was done showing him everything he needed, he stayed leaning against him. It felt good, but he wouldn’t say anything.
With a smile, Charlie put a hand on the small of Draco’s back then gave it a pat. “You’ll do fine. Each day we’ll ensure you have it right, so it becomes second nature soon enough.”
“Good,” Draco grinned. He was plenty excited about this and couldn’t wait to start learning what he needed to know.
After moving his hand from Draco’s back, he slipped his arm around him, holding him close. The sensations which came from the act made Charlie smile. It felt wonderful and he wanted to stay like this for a while. “Tomorrow you’ll get the books you need. Though you won’t have classes for a while, it’s best you start reading them. The more you learn now, the faster you’ll get through the standard classes and quicker you’ll get to the practical.”
“I’ll read a bit each night,” Draco promised, leaning more heavily against him. He too loved the feelings this produced.
Looking down at Draco, he gave him a squeeze. “Get your broom and we’ll go fly for a while. You need to keep your reflexes honed and this will help.”
“Right,” Draco grinned, standing. Yeah, he would love this! Suddenly, how bad the situation was seemed to slip away and he just looked forward to what he was now planning for.
Arms folded over his chest, Sirius shot Bill a worried look. They were in the Healer’s office waiting for him to finish the scan after tending to the normal. All had gone just fine up until now. Now—it was strange.
From what he could tell, the man had all the readings done on the joints, but was focused on Harry’s forehead. Since there were no joints there, he must have found something very odd. In fact, he seemed like he was using more spells than he had when he tended to the rest and it was taking far longer. Leaning over, he nudged Bill then whispered, making sure he wasn’t overheard, “Something is really wonky with this. It’s like he found something odd. I don’t like it.”
“Me either,” Bill told him, worry creasing his brow and guts clenching. Since this couldn’t relate to the arthritis, it had to be something else. And anything in that area probably wasn’t good. No, he didn’t like this at all.
Eyes locked on the Healer as he worked, Sirius tensed up as even the Healer looked concerned, summoning reference books and casting spells from them. “This isn’t good,” he muttered to Bill, growing more worried by the second.
“It’s not and I don’t like the conclusions I’m jumping to,” Bill mumbled back, fists clenched as he tried to focus to see if he could determine what the man might be checking for. Anything wonky in that area wasn’t good and could mean a serious health issue.
Though Sirius nodded to what Bill said, having the same thoughts himself, he cleared his throat then asked the Healer, “Is there something wrong?”
Shaking his head, the Healer cast the last of the spells he found then recorded his findings on the parchment he used. After helping Harry sit up, he looked over the sheet then sighed. Lifting his eyes, he looked between the three and said, “Gentlemen, I need to meet with you in my office to discuss something odd I found. My mediwitch will show you in. Give me a few minutes to find a couple of books then I’ll join you.” He then motioned for Madam Chari to take them to his office before heading to his library.
After straightening his clothes, Harry followed when the Mediwitch lead them out, but told Bill and Sirius softly, “This—I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Makes three of us,” Sirius muttered back, gut roiling as he thought over the implications. Yeah, this wasn’t good.
As he held the door open and motioned for the three to come in, Remus shot Lucius a concerned look. The trio were all pale and shaking slightly, looking mildly ill. Once they were in and seated, he sent an elf off for their tea so they could eat. As it was very late, almost ten, and he knew they hadn’t eaten before they left, he thought it was a good way for them to relax while they talked.
“I assume, from the look on your faces, he found something? The arthritis has spread?” Lucius asked, looking between Bill, Harry and Sirius’ pale faces.
“It’s not the arthritis,” Sirius said unevenly after a bracing sip of his beer. Right now he didn’t even want to think about eating as he was sure his stomach would reject it. The beer he needed to steady his nerves. “We need some help though, with research.”
Bill held Harry close, almost protectively, then added, “And, for now, we don’t want anyone else knowing what we’re about to tell you, not even those in the house.”
After shooting Lucius a worried and stunned look, Remus looked back at the three and nodded. “Our word; we won’t tell anyone. Now, what’s the matter? I assume it’s something huge and not pleasant.” Already his gut was clenching over what this could be, imaging the worst case scenarios.
“We need to find everything we can about Horcruxes,” Sirius muttered, shaking his head. “The Healer found one in his scar.”
Though Remus was puzzled as he hadn’t heard of one before, one glance at Lucius, seeing how pale he went, a sick look on his face, he muttered, “Oh Merlin.” Whatever would come of this wasn’t good.
