Shiloe smiled around at all his anchors. “I suppose you’re wondering why I gathered you all here.” He said.
“Aw!” Sirius pouted. “I was going to say that!”
Shiloe shot him a withering look, then turned to Blaise. “He’s right above Harry.” He told the teen.
Blaise snorted. “Under Luna?”
“Just so.”
“Hey! I have no idea what you’re talking about, but that sounds uncomplimentary, and I resent it!” Sirius complained.
“If you want to be placed in the pecking order with the other adults, you can act like one for two seconds!” Shiloe said sharply, and Sirius cleared his throat.
“Sorry, I’ll be good for the rest of the day.” Sirius said.
“Just until I say otherwise will be fine.”
Shiloe turned to Remus. “We need a clear-cut pecking order for Blaise.”
Remus paled. “Oh, Gods, I should have been out here with the group more! I didn’t realize he hadn’t picked up on it!” He turned to Blaise. “I am so sorry!” He took a deep breath. “Alright, are you ready for an information dump?” He asked.
Shiloe smiled and sat back, seeing that an hour and a half before lunch had been about accurate, as Blaise needed time for all this to sink in after it was imparted.
Blaise nodded.
“Here’s how it goes for me:” Remus began. “Firstly, Shiloe is above everyone, his word is law, because he can kill us with barely a thought, he won’t without extreme reasons, but he can. Then, we have Lucius, who has the most political power in the group, I even consider myself below him and one other, we’ll get to that in a bit. Lucius is the public spearhead of anything political we need done, he’s the wealthiest of the group—besides Sirius, who is lower because of maturity level—thank you, Padfoot. Shut up.” He added over Sirius’ outbursts of ‘Black is a wealthier family, thank you very much!’
Blaise snickered, and Remus looked put-upon.
“He’s probably going to go ballistic when he hears where he falls.” The werewolf warned the group, and Sirius shot him a glare.
“Now, the other one above me is only there because he has valuable skills I lack, therefore I defer to him to ensure that I can benefit from them.” He nodded to Severus, who gave him a nod back and a small, smug smirk as he crossed his arms in front of himself.
“Snivellus is—”
“Silencio!” Shiloe cocked an eyebrow at Sirius, who was still silently ranting. “Go ahead, but we are not going to sit here and listen to that, nor are we going to stop every time Remus’ pecking order ruffles your delicate little feathers.” He said sternly. “Go ahead, Remy.”
Remus looked at Sirius, who looked irate, and gave a small sigh before continuing. “Next up is me, as the Alpha. I don’t consider myself above those two because they have things I don’t, but everyone else in the group is either younger, acts like it,” He pointedly nodded to Sirius, “or is acting like they want to defer to me, and I am fine with taking that role. Their standing may shift, for those I don’t know that well, but for right this second, it stands as follows: Bill, as the eldest of the Weasley brood, and the one with the most experience wrangling teenagers of various ages, Charlie next, for the same reasons, Charlie is exactly equal in standing to Sirius, who acts like a teenager, needs to be occasionally reined in, and likes to cause chaos. After that, we have the school-age adults. Viktor, being more well-versed in dark magic is better able to defend himself than a Hogwarts student, which puts him just above Cedric. I consider you, Blaise, to be the next in line.”
Blaise’s eyes bugged out. “Me?!” He asked. “But I’m weak, I’m a beta, I’m—”
“More than capable of defending yourself and the others of your age.” Remus told him. “You have the wolf, it will enhance your abilities and I’ve taught you a bit more of how to use it, you are capable.” Remus repeated.
Blaise took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay.” He said, only a hint of nervousness bleeding through.
“Shiloe and I actually had to discuss the last bit, since I couldn’t really relate to the other kids. So it was a joint effort. Draco is the next after you, he can hold his own with his background, but has no creature inheritance yet, if he is even slated to get one, and so needs only a little help. Then Neville, he’s getting better, but still needs to be protected, and everyone should take care with him, as he needs to be built up some more to stand on his own. Last is Luna, everyone needs to protect her strongly, because she is a clairvoyant, and that is powerful, but very vulnerable due to the frequent disconnect from the reality we perceive, since they are getting so much more sensory input. The absolute bottom of the power structure is Harry. We all need to look out for him and watch his back, because as strong as he is, he is also very fragile. He wouldn’t like to hear it, but he has been made very meek and passive by his upbringing, and while he is good at hiding it, he’s not supposed to need to keep up a mask all the time. That’s why we are here without Shiloe sometimes, so Harry can get to trust us.”
Blaise nodded. “Alright. It will take a while for all that to settle, but I think I can remember the basic outline.”
“Just when you are here, watch who defers to who.” Remus said.
Shiloe lifted the silencing spell on Sirius, who shouted, “Whom, Remy, how many times do I have to tell you?!”
That broke the tense atmosphere and everyone laughed.
“Alright, so I’m going to let Harry out for a while so he can see everyone again.” Shiloe said, getting up and taking Luna with him. “No offence, but someone needs to explain that there’s another Pack meeting going on, and I’d rather it not be me this time.”
Draco smirked. “Afraid to get yelled at?” He teased.
“Something like that.” Shiloe muttered as he left the room with Luna.
Luna smiled. “I’m glad you trust me now.” She said happily.
“You didn’t give me much choice.” Shiloe told her.
Luna just nodded and waited while Shiloe fell back and Harry surfaced.
“What’s going on? Luna?”
“Pack meeting. There was some business that needed to be handled, but now that it is sorted, Shiloe wants you to spend some time with everyone again.”
“Oh.” Harry said.
“Come on, they’re waiting.” Luna dragged him out of the room.
Harry looked around as they came out, and his mouth dropped open. “You weren’t kidding! Everyone is here!” He took the seat between Luna and Neville that Shiloe had been at and smiled at Lucius. “Did you bring Aquila?” He asked.
Lucius looked surprised, but recovered quickly. “I did. Do you want to see her?” He asked.
Harry nodded eagerly.
Lucius smiled indulgently and brought her out of her bassinet and carefully made his way to Harry. He placed the baby in Harry’s arms and helped him support her properly.
“She’s so tiny.” Harry commented.
“She is growing quickly, though. She will be beautiful when she is older. And Shiloe says she will be a Veela.” Lucius told him.
“Oh! Do they run in your family?” Harry asked.
“Yes, they are the most prevalent creature in our line.” Lucius explained.
Harry looked down at her with a small smile. “I don’t know whether to say ‘that’s good,’ or ‘I’m sorry.’ On the one hand, she’ll be beautiful, but on the other, she’ll be beautiful.”
“You have pinpointed the reason for my trepidation.” Lucius said with amusement.
Harry handed her back over. “When will you know what colour her eyes will be?”
“By a year they are starting to settle. We will know for sure only by three years or thereabouts.”
“Weird. Wonder why it takes so long to find out. You’d think there’d be a spell or something—”
Cedric laughed, and Harry looked over curiously. He got himself under control and told Harry, “Oh, there is a spell to know what genetics a baby has, and it tells you everything. Including body shape, eye colour, whether they inherited the gene for male pattern baldness, everything.”
“So we could ask Madam Pomfrey—”
“We will not.” Lucius said firmly.
“Why not?”
“The spell is invasive.” Cedric said. “The baby has to let the Healer’s magic go in and examine their DNA, and if they don’t trust the Healer, they can easily blast them into a wall in response to the spell.”
Harry’s eyes went wide. “Can the parent cast it?”
“They can, and it would be welcomed, but the average layman can’t read it. It comes out with sets of alleles, and decoding those will give you the pertinent information. It’s used in cases of sick babies with no reason to be sick only, and if it needs to be used, then they can go looking for that information for a small extra fee.” Cedric told him.
“Oh.” Harry said softly, then looked fondly down at Aquila. “So we don’t want to cast it on her.” He handed her back to Lucius. “She’s adorable. Did Shiloe get to see her?”
Lucius nodded. “I came fully an hour before he asked us to, and he spent some time down on the floor with her, then we talked while I fed her.”
Harry frowned. “Why didn’t Shiloe feed her?” He asked.
Lucius cleared his throat. “I am weaning her, but this feeding was one only I could do. She will have a bottle after lunch.”
Harry’s face flamed as he caught Lucius’ drift. “Oh! I didn’t realize that was possible!”
Lucius gave him a small, indulgent smile. “Not everyone chooses to do it that way, it was an understandable mistake.” He said evenly.
“So why are you all here?” Harry asked.
“We needed to discuss pecking order in the pack. Blaise was unsure of where he stood and who he should protect.” Remus answered. “It was mostly my fault for staying in my room so often.”
“Still can’t believe I’m below Bill!” Sirius muttered.
Bill snorted. “We should probably eat lunch now. It seems some of us are getting a little testy. Shiloe said he set everything up, all you need to do is tap the table, Harry.”
Harry tapped the table with his wand and plates appeared in front of everyone, with their favourite foods artfully arranged on them. Harry smiled widely and dug into his shepherd’s pie.
“So what’s up with the whole ‘pecking order’ thing? Why is it so important?” Harry asked once he had eaten a bit.
“It’s so I know who I’m supposed to protect.” Blaise answered.
Harry frowned. “Protect?” He echoed.
“Oh, right, you don’t know yet, do you? I’m a werewolf.” Blaise told him.
“Ohh. I get it, then. You needed to know where you stand in relation to everyone else.” He nodded, then frowned. “Well where do I fall?”
“You’re directly under everyone else.” Bill said. When Harry visibly bristled, he added, “All that means is that we’re all supposed to protect you and look out for you.”
“I can protect myself!” Harry protested.
“For the most part, yes, that is true.” Severus said evenly. “But there will come times when you cannot, and that is where we come in. When you are overwhelmed, we will act for you and with you, to help ease your burdens. You will never be alone again.” He told Harry.
Harry was silent for long moments, playing with his food, before he finally looked up. “Thanks, then. I suppose if I’m going to need it, even if I don’t think I will, it would be nice to already have a support system in place.”
Severus inclined his head and they all continued to eat.
