Harry woke the next morning dreading breakfast. He had no idea how things were going to go, how people were going to act, and it worried him a little. He showered, dressed, grabbed his bag, and headed to the Great Hall. He was surprised to see he was one of the first people there. He sat down at his House table and started eating. As more and more students arrived, he watched them. Some looked terrified of him, others angry or sad.
“Good Morning Harry.” A dreamy voice said from behind him.
He turned with a smile, “Good Morning Luna. Join me?”
“Wish I could, but your morning is going to be busy and I don’t want to interrupt.”
“Maybe lunch then?”
“Sure Harry. I’ll see you then.” Luna waved and headed off to her table.
Harry was about to resume eating when Draco walked up to him.
“Good Morning Lord Potter.”
Harry looked at him confused. The rest of the school watched and listened.
“Good Morning Lord Malfoy. Join me for breakfast?”
“Gladly, first things though. I, Draco Lucian Malfoy, heir to the Ancient and Noble House of Malfoy, pledge myself to you and your cause.” Draco held out his right hand.
Harry stood, “I, Harrison James Potter, Lord of the Ancient and Noble House of Potter, do accept your pledge and welcome you as a friend.”
The two boys shook hands then sat down.
“Am I going to be doing this all day?” Harry asked.
“No, just once more for Blaise when he gets here. The others who are thinking of joining you will do smaller acts to show you they want to be on your side and will make the pledge later once you get to know them better. I basically set the tone for what is expect from the other old family lines.” Draco replied with a chuckle.
Blaise arrived shortly after and Harry repeated the acceptance ceremony. He thought he was done when the twins walked up and he had to do it two more times. Harry couldn’t help but smile when he finished with the twins. He watched them walk back to Gryffindor table and caught Ron’s gaze. He saw fury burning in those blue eyes that once looked at him in friendship. Harry’s smile fell. He knew then that Ron was not helping as he claimed and Harry’s gut feeling about the letters he sent were right.
‘Oh Ron, the spotlight isn’t worth it.’ Harry thought as he finished his food and left. It was double potions with Gryffindor that morning and he was both looking forward to and fearing the class all at once.
“Harry!” Harry turned and saw Dean and Seamus jogging to catch up to him.
“We want to talk to you later, in private.” Dean said as he walked next to Harry.
“Sure. We can meet at my room after dinner if you want and talk then. That way we have plenty of time and don’t have to rush to class.”
“Thanks Harry.” Seamus said with a grin.
The boys walked into Potions and took their seats. Everyone was waiting for Snape, catching up with friends, when Ron walked up to Harry.
“Can we talk later?” He asked, trying hard not to glare at Draco.
“Sure. I have some time before dinner tonight we can talk.” Harry replied with a cool voice.
Ron nodded and sat back down just as Snape walked in.
“Today I will be testing your abilities to adjust to a potion gone wrong.” With a wave of his wand each desk had a set of instructions placed on it.
“You and your partner will brew a simple healing potion. Each set of instructions has one step that is written wrong. This will test your abilities to correct a simple mistake. If you make this potion correctly, it should be a pale blue color. Begin.”
One person from each table went to gather ingredients. When Harry returned, Draco was smirking.
“What?”
“I know this potion by heart. I had to make it once a day a few summers ago, I kept getting hurt and Father was fed up with calling Snape every day for one. The stock pile we had was quite impressive.”
Harry rolled his eyes, but followed the directions given by Draco. By the end of the class, they had a perfect potion.
“Well done you two. Bottle it up and I’ll send it to Poppy.” Snape said when they turned in their vile.
There were a few others who had come close, but most of the class failed miserable. Neville and Ron somehow managed to turn their potion red and Pansy and Crabbe’s was thick and a sickly yellow.
“For those of you who failed, I want a foot-long essay on why it is important to be able to fix mistakes. Dismissed.”
The class departed. Harry and Draco parted ways, Draco to Ancient Runes, Harry to Care of Magical Creature. They met up again at lunch. Luna joined them, making Harry do the acceptance ceremony again.
“This is getting silly. Do I HAVE to do this every time?” Harry asked.
“If you want it to stick, yet. It’s an alliance ceremony and those who say the oath are bound to help you any way they can. Only those who mean it will make it. If it’s broken, bad things befall the one who broke their word.” Draco said.
“Words mean nothing if they are empty. Those most loyal to you will not hesitate to take the oath.” Luna said dreamily.
Harry shook his head and finished eating. He and Draco were walking to Transfiguration when they were confronted by none other than Lavender Brown.
“Traitor! How could you leave us and go join them?” She screamed at Harry.
“I didn’t join anyone. I made my own side.”
“You’re still a traitor!” She pointed her wand at Harry.
Harry stood still as Draco drew his wand.
“Really Lavender? If I was a traitor would Hermione and Ginny still be friends with me? How about the twins, Neville, and Luna? Put your wand away and think rationally about this.” Harry said as he looked her straight in the eye.
“You cursed them!” Lavender made a move to hex him, but was knocked sideways by a spell.
Draco and Harry turned to see who had hexed Lavender and saw Astoria standing there with her wand drawn.
“Bad form Brown. Harry was unarmed.” She said calmly as she put her wand away then turned and left.
“I take it that was one of the small acts you were telling me about?” Harry asked as he and Draco continued to class. Lavender was being helped by Parvati.
“Indeed, it would be.” Draco replied as they walked into class, taking the seats next to Hermione in the front.
Before Harry knew it, it was time for him to have his chat with Ron. They both had Defense as their last class of the day, so Harry waited for him outside the door.
“This way.” He said when Ron finally walked out.
Harry led him to his quarters. He whispered his password to Godric before showing Ron to his office. When they walked in, Draco, Ginny, and Hermione were all sitting, waiting for them. Hermione had a self-writing quill and parchment floating near her. Ginny was sitting at a small table with a leather-bound book on it. Ron could see that the pages were empty.
“Have a seat Ron.” Harry said before he sat down at the desk.
Ron took a seat.
“Today we speak with Ronald Weasley, disowned member of the House Weasley.” Ginny said. Ron saw her words appear in the book.
“Attach notes from noting quill.” She said and sat back.
“Speak you piece Ron. Note, every word said in this room is being recorded in that book.” Harry pointed to the leather book.
“This is to protect everyone in this room from lies being spread. Now, what do you want?”
Ron swallowed hard, “I want to back on the team.”
“After what you said?” Harry raised an eyebrow.
“I was wrong, oh so very wrong for what I said. I don’t know what came over me but I would never wish harm on my family like that.”
“But you did. You also are claiming to be the new savior since I have gone over to the Dark.”
“That interview was all lies! Everyone knows that you will be the one to save the world. Or you were going to be. If you would just come back to the Light,”
“No.” Harry’s voice had gone cold.
“I am done being a pawn. Any move I make in this War will be because I decided to make it, not because someone else did. I will not go back to Dumbledore and be his Golden Boy.”
“Then you are a fool. He has done everything for you!”
“The only thing he has done for me was leave me in a home that didn’t want me.”
Ron saw red, “Fine. Be that way. I tried. I sent you that information about the Horcrux’s. I tried to be nice. You turn you back on our friendship and take up with the snakes. I WILL be the savior you won’t be and everyone will love me while you will be remembered as the boy who left.”
Harry watched with sadness filling his heart, “You turned your back on me last year. You never apologized for that. You want the spotlight so badly you can have it. But know this Ron, it comes with a price. It comes with knowing that you will most likely die at the end of this. That Dumbledore is going to knowingly send you into dangers that you shouldn’t be in. It’s knowing that you are going to leave your family with a gaping hole because you are too stubborn to admit you were wrong.”
Harry watched as Ron stood slowly, “I will pay that price because I am not a coward like you.”
Ron walked out, slamming doors as he went. Harry rested his head in his hands. He had hoped that Ron would admit his wrong doings and start to make amends. Instead, he left. He left his former friends and sister mourning him. They knew that this was going to get him killed and he wouldn’t see it before it was too late for them to do anything. The group spent the last of the time before dinner composing themselves. They still had to meet with Dean and Seamus later and they needed to pull it together. Harry silently told his friend good-bye before he let the tears fall for the death of his first friend.
Hey everyone! I know this chapter ended on a kind of sad note, but I wanted to get across just how much Ron turning on Harry really effected him. Thank you for all the reviews. Some of them make me giggle with the comentary about Ron and Dumbledore.
