Rodolphus pulled Roark down onto one of the chaise lounges, slipping an arm around his shoulders to draw him against his side. Harry and Rabastan, both looking at Roark with slightly worried expressions, sat down on the loveseat beside the chaise.
"Calm down, darling," came his deep murmur into his ear, "or you're going to blow every light in this house, or end up setting something a fire."
A soft snort sounded, drawing everyone's eyes to the source. Kili grinned at their arched brows. "Sorry," he said, not sounding sorry at all. "It wouldn't be the first time someone was upset, or angry enough that they blew every light in the house. Nor, I'm quite sure will it be the last. As for setting something a fire..." he let that one drift, throwing a grin at his father. "Well, some of us CAN be extremely emotional about some things."
The Admiral had to chuckle as he too looked over at his youngest brother, a graying brow arched. "All too true, Ki," he said as Thorin gave an unrepentant shrug.
"Hey, not my fault. Some foolish idiot decided it was a good idea to try to kill my son and my youngest nephew in front of me. Fury doesn't even come CLOSE to describing what my emotions were that day. What I WAS really surprised about though, was that I didn't set fire to the Square, or turn the bastards into human fireballs...and trust me, I WAS tempted."
Suddenly Roark let loose a laugh, "Na, Commander. Much more fun to do it the physical way. After all, why waste magic on something that your fists can do a better job of."
Thorin chuckled. "Exactly."
Rodolphus could only smirk, his arms tightening as he felt him relax into his side. "Well, regardless of what is said here tonight, I want you, love," he pressed his lips to his temple, looking around at the Durin's, then at Adama. "And it will not change what I feel for Roark one bit."
Roark lifted his head, pressing his lips to his jaw. "Nor will it change what I feel for you."
"That's good to hear from you both. Sebastien, what have you got for us?" Lt. Commander Roark Durin asked of his cousin from where he sat beside his sister Kalista, who was, even now looking between to two on the chaise, the two on the loveseat beside them, then to Adama, a frown beginning to curve her brow. : Lis? What is it? :
: This is not going to be pretty, brother mine, : she murmured into his worried mind. : HE is not going to change his mind any time soon. Harry and Roark are going to be needing us before this is over. Especially Roark. This is going to hurt him very badly. :
: Then we will of course be there for both of them. Roark will have the support of this family, if his own will not give it. :
"Just what we were expecting to find," Sebastien answered as brother and sister spoke privately. "And something that we did NOT expect."
"What do you mean something you didn't expect, son?"
"Their blood work came back yesterday afternoon, and as we expected, there is no doubt that they are cousins twice removed. There was, however, something else that showed up in Roark's blood work. Something that should NOT have been there. An abnormality that shocked the HELL out of us," he looked over at Severus.
"It's why we were so late getting home last night," he said as he picked up where Sebastien left off. He turned his head, dark, silky black hair, falling into his face. "Adama, when James and Lily brought Roark home, did any of you attempt to do any kind of an investigation into where Roark may have come from?"
"Of course we did, and as I told him this morning, we also tried to find out who his birth family may have been, but the young woman who had put him up for adoption in the first place asked that his files be sealed, then vanished. We never were able to find her."
"That woman was my cousin, Leta Lestrange. She was the daughter of one of my father's younger brothers." Rodolphus told them. "From the letters Bas and I found in the family box, she felt that she had no choice. Her own husband had been killed in the raids on Leo, and what she would be getting from the Warriors Pension, as he was only a Sergeant, would not have been anywhere near enough to support her, AND a newborn," he shook his head.
"Really, she did the only thing she could..." Rabastan spoke up. "Making the only real choice that she could in the circumstances. She decided to place him for adoption, but she refused to give him to just anyone. She investigated...found the Peverell Potters, having heard they were looking to adopt another child as Lily apparently could not have another. According to her letters, she spoke with them several times and determined that they would be perfect for Roark. After the adoption had been finalized, she returned to Aquaria heartbroken, where she was killed in a Cylon Raid not long after."
"Did she write anything about who his father may have been?"
They both shook their heads as Rodolphus answered, "She didn't know. In one of her letters, she did explain that her twin sister, Selina...that was the name of Roark's mother, that the man she had been in a long-term relationship with had decided to keep the relationship, then their marriage a secret, as he had not yet had time to speak with his own family, having had several children from a previous marriage."
A sudden sharp gasp sounded into the silence of the room and had everyone turning to look at the now very white-faced Admiral Roark. "Roark?" Thorin was up and at his brother's side in a heartbeat, squatting beside his chair to lay a hand on his forearm. "What is it?"
"What did you and Severus find, Sebastien?" he asked his son in a sudden husky voice, a sudden surge of hope filling his eyes and nearly bringing Sebastien to his knees before him as well.
"We know who his father is," he said with a tip of his head in acknowledgment of the unasked question, which now had Thorin drawing in a deep breath.
"WHAT?!" came the cry of shock from Roark as more than a few of the Durin's tensed, each beginning to see exactly where this was now headed...and what Sebastien's head tip to Roark Sr. actually meant. "My father? But...HOW? WHO?" he looked around the room as more than a few of their emotions were beginning to overwhelm his fragile shields. "Is he...still alive, Sebastien?"
"Oh yes, Rory. Your father is still very much alive. As for the how...As I said, Severus, Schyler, and I found something in your blood work...Something that we recognized. Something that should NOT have been there."
"We ran the test three more times just to be sure what we were seeing," Schyler said as he looked over at him. "The results were the same each time. There now was no doubt."
"After that, I took the results," Severus picked up softly, a hand wrapping around Dacian's wrist, squeezing it, warning him to remain silent...to wait, "matching your blood work up to others that we had on file. There now was no doubt."
"No doubt of WHAT? Sebastien?" he asked, looking around the room as the emotions intensified. "Why do you all feel so...hurt? So...ANGRY?" he asked as he looked around the room again. Ethan. Roan. Dacian and Gabriel. His gaze swung to Desmond, to Damien, to Colten, Dylan, Payton, Logan, and Christopher. Then his silver eyes swung to look at several of the cousins.
Kili was fairly dancing in place. Aiden, his brothers Tyler, Dante, and Kaden, then over to Roark, on to Greyson, Taylor, and Gwydion..."Sebastien...WHO IS MY FATHER?"
"Your father, Roark Peverell Potter, is none other than Admiral Roark Killian Durin."
