The rest of the morning went by quickly and soon Severus and Hermione found themselves eating lunch in the Great Hall. Severus kept glancing sideways at Remus, he didn’t want to tell him that they did it, not until they knew that the potion was stable. Albus kept catching his eye and grinning. Surely that man couldn’t know everything.
Severus looked at Hermione and noticed that she wasn't eating. He brought her back to her senses by placing his hand on her thigh. She smiled at him. She knew that he couldn’t overtly show his affection for her in front of the students, but subtle touches under the Head Table, passing grazes across her back as he guided her down the hall. Those were his way of showing her what he felt at that moment. He really was a romantic underneath that hard snarky exterior.
After lunch, the couple went back to the lab to check on the progress of the potion/blood experiment. Severus looked into the microscope and verified that the potion was still stable and that Hermione had possibly found the cure. The next step was to test the potion on Remus.
“Why don’t we invite he and Albus to join us for dinner at the Three Broomsticks?” Hermione suggested as Severus started bottling the potion. After going through all the arithmatic equations, they were able to calculate the dose for someone of Remus’ height, weight and length of time infected. A quick letter to the DADA professor and the Headmaster to invite them to dinner and Severus was off to class, leaving Hermione in the lab to record her findings.
The whole afternoon, Severus had a hard time being the greasy git everyone was used to. The seventh year Gryffindor/Slytherin class didn’t know what hit them when he actually awarded ten points to Gryffindor for a correct answer to a complicated question. Severus could help but let his happiness and pride come out and decided not to fight it. He had never seen so many dumbstruck expressions in one class, except maybe when he stood up for Hermione right after her accident.
Hermione had recorded all of her findings, including the dosage equations. Now all she needed was the proof that it worked. She couldn’t wait to hear Remus’ reaction to her news. Severus met Hermione in her chambers and they apparated to the tavern. Remus and Albus had not yet arrived so Severus guided her into the booth at the back of the pub.
They were enjoying a few drinks and enjoying each other’s company, ignoring the butterflies flapping around in their stomachs for what they were about to do. Hermione felt like it was all a dream, she was waiting to wake up and have to go make the potion all over again. Severus seemed to read her mind and reassured her that she had in fact found the cure for lycanthropy.
The couple was brought out of their quiet discussion when a smiling Albus sat across from them. His eyes twinkled like they always did. “I trust that we are meeting tonight because my two best Potions Masters have finished their research?” he asked quizzically.
“Yes, I think we have, Sir. But you must remember that I am not a Mistress yet. The only Potions Master here is Severus.” Hermione said humbly as she ran her fingers lightly across the back of Severus hand.
“Hermione, my dear,” Albus started, “if you did indeed complete your task successfully, there is no doubt in my aged mind that you will be given that title.” Severus agreed, making Hermione blush deep red.
Remus walked slowly up to the table, his face was pale and his eyes sunken in slightly. Severus thanked the gods that Hermione was able to finish the potion before the werewolf’s next transformation. Remus eased himself into the seat next to Albus. “So, of what do we have the pleasure?” he asked trying to sound aristocratic, but his weakened state obscured the effect.
Hermione smiled at him and pulled a small vial out of her robes and set it on the table. Severus grabbed it and placed it in front of the confused werewolf. “Happy Halloween, Remus.” Severus said politely.
“Halloween is still a few days away, and you don’t exchange gifts on Halloween. What is this?” he asked as he picked up the vial and eyed is suspiciously.
“That, Remus, is what I hope to be the cure for you,” Hermione said proudly.
Remus’ jaw dropped and his eyes became shiny with tears. “You’re serious? You did it?”
Hermione nodded. “I am almost positive that it will rid your body of the wolf genes and tyou you will no longer be in pain. That you will be human again,” she couldn’t keep her voice from shaking with emotion. “I am not sure if it will be painful, but the tests that Severus and I performed dissolved the wolf blood cells.”
Remus was overtaken with emotion. Tears flowed freely down his cheeks and the other two men at the table were fighting off tears as well. “Can I take it now?” Remus asked hoarsely.
“I would wait until we are in a more private setting, just incase it does cause pain or any adverse side effects,” Severus suggested halfheartedly. He really wanted to see if the potion worked, but he knew that if anything went wrong, Hermione would never ive ive herself if anyone saw Remus going through any possible pain.
Albus smiled and waved the waitress off that was coming toward the table. “I know of a certain house nearby that would be the perfect place to test this potion.” Albus’ smile brightened his eyes even more and Severus took the hint.
“I say we forego dinner for the moment, we are all a bit too anxious to see if this truly works.” He stood up holding Hermione’s hand and guiding her out of her seat. Remus nodded and had apparated faster than Severus could blink. The other three apparated and met Remus in the Shrieking Shack.
The four of them stood in the middle of the dusty old house, not knowing what to say or do. The silence dragged on and Severus couldn’t take it anymore. “Drink it man!” he said exasperated.
Remus slowly unstoppered the vial and brought it to his lips. He swallowed it in one quick swig. For a moment nothing happened. All eyes were on the werewolf, Hermione was asking Severus what was going on. Before Severus could answer, Remus’ body started shaking and his eyes bulged slightly. “Remus?” Severus asked, stepping toward him. Hermione pulled him back swiftly and Severus was glad she did, for Remus started transforming into a great gray wolf. Albus stayed rooted to his spot watching his friend and colleague change right before his eyes.
“How can this be?” Severus asked. “I was sure it would work.”
mionmione grasped his hand and said softly, “Give it a second, the wolf needs to let go of him. I was expecting this.”
Severus looked at her stunned and then he looked back to the wolf lying on the ground. The gray fur started to become finer and more blond. The body slowly elongated, legs stretching out straight and long. The wolf’s muzzle slowly shrank to the size of a human nose. After a few moments, a disheveled Remus Lupin lay in front of them. Severus went to move toward him again, but Hermione held him back. “Let him wake up on his own, it won’t be long,” she whispered through her choked sobs.
Sure enough, Remus’ amber eyes slowly opened andtooktook in his surroundings. He looked around at Albus, Severus and Hermione. His body protested all sudden movement, but he was able to get up and wrapped his arms around Hermione. “Thank you, Hermione.”
“Did it work?” she asked tentatively.
He kissed her briefly on the cheek. “I think so, but the only way to be sure is to look at the blood.” He started to pull her toward the passage from the shack to the Whomping Willow. Severus and Albus followed close behind. Remll bll but ran down the tunnel and out to hit the knot on the tree. The limbs stopped flailing and the four of them ran as fast as they could to the entrance of the dungeons.
Once in the lab, Remus pulled his sleeve up and waited expectantly for Severus to draw his blood. “You think that I am going to do that?” Severus exclaimed. “Hermione is the one who is comfortable poking people with needles.”
“Severus, please. It’s not like I am able to.” Hermione gestured toward the scarred flesh over her eyes. “All you have to do is prick his finger, all we need are a few drops.”
Severus clenched his teeth and looked at his friend. Remus needed to know, they all needed to know. Severus took out a knife that he usually used for chopping and pricked Remus middle finger, dropping the blood onto a slide and putting it under the microscope. He gasped at the sight, not only were the spiked cells gone, there were more red cells that there were this morning.
“Hermione, is this right? There are more red blood cells than there were in the sample this morning.”
She smiled as best she could. “That means that it worked, we just need to watch to make sure that he doesn’t have an over abundance or it will clot too fast.”
“How long?” Remus asked.
“Just a few minutes, if the cells were too multiply any more, it would happen in the next few minutes,” she answered unassuredly.
“Hermione?”
She turned toward her lover, “Yes, Severus.”
“I am so proud of you,” he whispered into her hair. She could feel his tears fall from his cheeks onto hers. She reached up and gently wiped them away from both their faces. “I love you,” he added when he kissed her fingertips as she passed over his lips.
Remus took it upon himself to look into the microscope, he knew a little about muggle chemistry, but still all he saw was what looked like Frisbees. Severus smiled at his confusion and moved him aside so he could look. The cells seemed to have stayed and not multiplied any more.
“Hermione, I think you did it,” he said proudly.
“Now we just have to wait a few days until the full moon to be sure,” she said as Remus crushed her in another hug. “Thank you, Hermione. Thank you,” he sobbed.
Albus quietly came up and put a hand on her shoulder. “Tomorrow, Miss Granger, your Potions Mistress Certificate will be here. Congratulations and thank you,” he said as he kissed her lightly on the cheek. “Remus, I think we better go get some food, my stomach is starting to protest and I smell haggis, mmmmm,” Albus teased as he urged the former werewolf out of the lab.
Once they were gone, Severus captured Hermione’s lips in a fierce kiss. “Love, shall we eat in this evening?” She nodded, smiling and he guided her to his private chambers.
A/N - Ok – I made an oops Thank you to ‘rhitmcshanm’ at Whispers for pointing it out. I said that Hermione was glancing at Remus during lunch, since she is blind, that is hard to do. This is what I get for not having a beta. Sorry, these thirteen hour days at work are killing me. My brain is befuddled enough, you add lack of sleep to it and BOOM! Thank you again. I have edited the first couple paragraphs so that Severus is now the one looking around and glancing at Remus. ;)
