Chapter 26 Whispers in the Restricted Section
Nina hung back a while before heading for dinner that evening. She wanted to make sure that she didn’t run into the Potions Master on the way. When she walked into the Hall and looked up to the head table, it was to the twin glares of both the Headmaster and the Professor.
Albus had wanted time to think about how he would handle his Potions Master before speaking to him, he had not been expecting to suddenly find himself sitting in front of Severus fireplace.
Severus had been pacing his office grumbling to himself about Albus, and Nina and he was planning on having words with her about her blatant disregard of his feelings. He was not been happy about the sudden appearance of Albus. They had argued, and both of them blamed Nina for this.
She walked as slowly as she could towards the table, stopping to talk to Hermione and hoping that she, Harry and Ron would ask her to sit with them. They didn’t. They thought that she preferred to sit with Professor Snape. She had no choice but to go and face the music. She had been hoping that the Headmaster would calm Severus down and everything would be alright when she originally Apperated the Head master to him. It seemed a good idea at the time.
She made her way to her seat, avoiding their eyes and hoping that neither of them would give her a telling off in front of the whole school.
They didn’t. In fact Snape ignored her completely. Albus gave her a terse nod and nothing more. All of the staff could sense an atmosphere and conversation was at a minimum.
She was determined not to let Severus or Albus see how uncomfortable she felt. Instead she quietly ate her dinner, pretending outwardly as if it was the most interesting thing in the world.
But her stomach was in knots and she was finding it hard to swallow.
When dessert came all she could think about was how to get away from the table without either of them collaring her.
Nina kept her eyes glued to the Griffindor table, waiting for Hermione, Harry and Ron to finish. The moment she saw them getting ready to leave the table she planned on making a dash for them. That way the Headmaster and the Potions Master might not be able to get her alone.
At least while they were ignoring her she had a chance of escape. She thought.
But Severus was taking a lot of notice. He could feel her tension and discomfort. ‘Serves her bloody right.’ He had been watching her from out of the corner of his eye, had noticed her looking to her friends. She was coiled, ready to spring. He had a pretty good idea that she wanted to make a quick getaway. It didn’t matter. He could wait.
As soon as she saw Hermione reach for her bag Nina didn’t hesitate. She was standing outside the Great Hall doors, waiting for them.
“Hi. Can you use some company?”
She smiled and tried to appear casual.
“Yeah. Herm’s going to the library and were gonna practice some quiddich moves if you fancy coming.” Ron told her.
“Your welcome to come to the library with me.”
Nina would have loved to have gotten out of the castle and as far away from Severus and Albus as possible. But her last experience at the quiddich pitch had not been a good experience for her so she opted for the library.
“I’ll go to the library thanks. I’ve only been there once.”
“You don’t know what your missing.” Harry told her. “We could give you a flying lesson if you like.”
That really made Nina’s mind up.
“Err, no thanks. Maybe another time.“
“Suit yourself.” The boys told her. “You don’t know what your missing though.”
Nina thought she did.
“See you later.” She told them and took Hermione’s arm. She wanted away from the Hall, and quick.
“Oh wow.” Hermione looked at Nina wide eyes. I wish I could do that. But warn me next time will you.“ She laughed.
“Yeah. Sorry. I just thought it’d be quicker this way.”
“Is something wrong Nina? You seem a bit on edge.”
“No.” She squeaked and coughed. “I just wanted to get here and look at the books. Are you looking for anything in particular?” Nina wanted to change the subject.
“Yes. I need to go into the restricted section. I’ve got Arithmancy homework due next Tuesday and I want to get it out of the way. What about you?”
Anything really. I just thought I’d have a look around. What’s the restricted section for?”
“Its more advanced magic. Only sixth and seventh years are allowed in there. And staff of course. You should be okay. You’re seventeen and kind of a student. I mean you do go to some of the classes now don’t you. Come on. Just watch out for Madam Pince. She watches everyone like a hawk.”
Hermione led her to the caged door leading into a large area of shelves that was fenced off from the rest.
As soon as they entered they could feel the magic emanating from the hundreds of books in there.
“Can you feel that?”
“Yes. It’s because there are so many dark magic books in here. Whatever you do, don’t open a book without checking with me first. A lot of them are very dangerous. Some fatal. Only the Professors are allowed access to those. They’re chained to the shelves so you’ll know not to try and take one.”
Hermione went off to browse through the Arithmancy section as Nina looked around in awe. As before, she walked up and down aisle after aisle, running her fingers along the spines of the books. She didn’t dare try to pick one up. Not after what Hermione had said. Instead she contented herself with just touching as many of them as possible. Trying to imagine what was inside them.
That was when she realised that every book she touched seemed to speak to her. Whispers in her head.
“She is here. It is her. The Assimilator. She has come for her magik. The light one. The Dark one. Creator. Giver and taker of souls. Come child. Touch. Let us feed you. Share our knowledge. We give it freely to you. Only you.”
Nina was in a trance. It was as if the voices were hypnotising her. Calling to her. Their voices intermingled. All of them whispering at the same time. As they spoke her feet took a faster pace as she stooped and stretch to touch them. When she couldn’t reach the higher shelves it seemed that the books reached out to her, leaning themselves towards her until her fingers brushed against them. She had no control. Her mind was too full of the voices to give any coherent thought to what she was doing. She just followed. Followed the calls and whispers of the books as they drew her to them.
Snape had seen Nina Apperate with Hermione. The boys had gone off on their own. He also knew Miss Granger habits. He had been teaching her for almost six years. He headed for the library.
When he entered Hermione was sitting alone at a table, books open and covering the table as she took notes and turned pages.
“Miss Granger.”
She jumped. She had not noticed the shadow of Professor Snape looming over her as she concentrated on the figures dancing in front of her.
“Professor. You startled me.”
“That was not my intention Miss Granger. I believe Miss Manohel accompanied you here this evening.”
“Ye Sir. She’s in the restricted section. I have told her not to take any of them down without coming to me first. She is just looking at them.”
“Thank you Miss Granger.”
Severus stalked off to find her. She would not get away from him now.
He entered the restricted section and began to walk slowly down the centre aisle, looking left and right down the rows of shelves, knowing that she would be down one of them. He did not expect what he found.
He was three quarters of the way down and had just turned his head to the left when he saw her.
She was almost running long one of the row, her hands reaching up as far as they could as she brushed them along the row of books. She reached the end and tried to reach the top row. When her fingers did not attain their goal the books, books that were securely fasted down both by muggle and magical means, stretched themselves over and down to her, reaching out for her, brushing themselves just for an instant against her fingers as she hurried on to the next. Her face and hair were damp with perspiration as she moved on from book to book with a fevered expression on her face.
He stood, staring at her, his mouth open in amazement.
As she approached him he could see her eyes. They were glazed, unfocused. She was not in control. The Dark magic had taken over.
Nina was so tired. She wanted to stop, wanted the voices to stop and leave her alone. But they wouldn’t. She wanted to put her hands over her ears to shut them out but they didn’t let her as they whispered to her and made her come to them. All of them. She was hurting. Her arms, oh they ached from stretching and reaching. Her back and legs ached from bending, and still they called to her. Her mind cried out for them to stop and still it went on until she no longer had the energy to ask them to leave her alone. They had taken her over and she had no choice but to follow.
Severus whipped out his wand and sent his Patronus to Albus.
He wanted to just grab her and pull her out of there. But the Dark magic was strong. It had got it’s grip on her and Severus knew that he could not help her on his own.
He ran back into the main area of the library and told Madam Pince to clear everyone out of there immediately. The librarian did not argue and quickly gathered up the few students in there and ushered them out, telling them that the library was closed until further notice.
“But Madam Pince. My friend Nina is still in there. Please. I have to go to her.”
“Miss Granger. I shall inform Professor Snape. You are to go to your dormitory. now.”
Hermione had no choice but to go, but she hated leaving Nina behind. She was just heading down the main staircase when she saw the Headmaster coming towards her at quite a pace. He was followed by Professors MacGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout and Sinistra.
“Headmaster. The library. Madam Pince has closed it and Nina is still in there.”
“We are aware of the situation Miss Granger. Please go to your common room.”
They did not stop. The Headmaster had spoken to Hermione as they rushed passed her, leaving her on the stairs with a worried look on her face.
She knew that something was terribly wrong, but she had no idea what. Instead of heading for Griffindor tower, she decided to go find Harry and Ron and tell them what had happened.
Severus was still watching Nina when Albus arrived with the other Professors.
“She was like this when I found her Albus. She does not seem to have any control over what she is doing and I am at a loss as what to do. The Dark magic that surrounds her is overbearing.”
Severus was sweating with the exertion of trying to keep the magic at bay from himself.
The group watched Nina for a moment as she ran along the aisles touching every book. She did not miss a single one. They could see the exhaustion on her face as she was compelled from one book to the next.
“I confess that I too, am at a loss. The power is overbearing.”
Severus felt ill. He was close to panic now. ‘If the Headmaster did not know how to handle this then there was nothing that they could do.’
Then he remembered something that Kali had said to them earlier about being the keeper of the Dark Magik for Nina.
“KALI!” He roared.
Kali appeared instantly.
As soon as she saw her Miss Nina, she muttered some words as she stepped to the front if the aisle where Nina was manically touching the books. Or the books were touching her. It was impossible to tell any more.
“The Professors must move away. Is not been safe for yous.”
Kali stood with her little scrawny arms held out in front of her as she spoke in a language that none of the others present could understand, as house elf’s started to appear at her side by the dozen. Within a minute there seemed to be the entire population of Hogwarts elf’s standing as close as they could to Kali, crowding around her, taking up her chant and holding there hands in front of them as the Professors were pushed back out of the way.
Not all of the elf’s were facing the same direction. Groups of them were turning away from Kali and holding out their hands to different parts of the restricted section. But not one of them was without contact with another elf. Each had some part of its body touching another so as to maintain the link with Kali.
They moved slowly as Kali, still chanting, a look of total concentration on her face, walked slowly towards Nina.
Nina was still fingering the every book that was there. But her movements had slowed a fraction, as Kali and the elf’s that were nearest to her drew closer.
The books that had been until now reaching out to her with ease, began to struggle as they strived to gain access to her.
Kali was moving slower now as the elf’s chants became faster but quieter.
The Professors looked on amazed and helpless, as the elf’s weaved their own special magic. Magic never before witnessed by another living soul as they worked as one to assist Kali.
Not all of the elf’s were facing Nina and Kali. Groups of them were aiming their magic in different directions, covering every part of the library. Not a whisper left unchecked.
Nina leaned against the shelves on front of her as she tried to lift her hands and touch the books, but her arms were so heavy, too heavy for her to do anything but let them hang limply by her sides. The books had quieted somewhat. Their whispers becoming quieter and quieter, there pull easing in her head as something else entered. More voices. Strange voices. Chanting over and over. They were drowning out the noise of the books as they told the whispers to let go of her, as still more chanting was drawing her towards it. Telling her to let go, she must rest, come to them instead of the whispers.
‘Yes. She wanted to rest. Her legs, she could not feel her legs. They were there, she knew they were, but they wouldn’t hold her up any more.’
She couldn’t see through the haze in front of her. A lone voice was calling her name. ‘Is that my name?’
Miss Nina. Let go Miss Nina. You must let go.”
She tried to turn her head to the voice, the familiar voice that was calling her name. But her legs would not hold her up any more and her head was spinning.
‘Why was her head spinning?’
Nina thought no more as her eyes closed and she tumbled to the floor.
Kali was ready. Faster then the blink of an eye she was beside her Mistress before she hit the floor. Holding her little arm in the air as she caused her Miss Nina to stop and lay back on a pillow of air and drift toward the little elf.
Kali floated her charge in the direction of the other elf’s as they all stood facing them, waiting until Nina and Kali had come out of the aisle, before they surrounded the two of them.
The Professors had seen as Kali had brought her out of the aisle and he and Minerva started to go to her until both felt a restraining hand on their arms.
“It is not yet over.”
The Headmaster told them. Nodding in the direction of the elf’s.
They stepped back and waited again.
The elf’s had arranged themselves into what looked like an impenetrable barrier around Nina and Kali. They were chanting again but it was a different chant to the last one. This one sounded soft and mournful sounding to the Professors. Some chanted high and some low and between them they produced a beautiful but most haunting melody as Kali began to sing. All the time looking at her Miss Nina lying on the floor. Tears flowed down Kali’s cheeks as she sang her sad, haunting song. A song that that resounded gently throughout the library, a song that could break the heart of any who listened.
Kali’s voice began to fade as the chants of the elf’s slowly died.
In two’s and three’s they lowered their heads and winked out, then larger groups began to disappear.
Severus’ expression turned from one of worry and concern, to one of absolute horror as he looked at the scene in front of him. All of the regular house elf’s were gone now. There was only Kali, who stood weeping, as she looked down at Nina laying still and silent on the floor.
He sank to his knees, unable to support himself on his legs as the realisation hit him. The terrible, horrible truth. She was dead. Nina. The most wonderful, beautiful, aggravating, cheekiest and loving creature that this world had ever made in his opinion, was dead.
A loud choking sob escaped him. Followed by another. He could hear someone crying behind him. He did not turn to see. He couldn’t tear his gaze away from Nina.
He heard a voice. It was calling him. He ignored it. He wanted to stay here, where she was. He heard someone call him again.
“Leave Me Be.” He snarled. The voice persisted.
“Master Snape. Master Snape. You must come to her. Is your turn. Only you can save her.”
He shook his head. ‘What the hell were they talking about? It was too late to save her. She was gone.’
“Professor Snape. She is needing you now. Kali can do no more. Only you can help her now.”
Severus watched Kali, his face a mix of grief and puzzlement, as she strode purposefully up to him and tugged at his robes.
“You must be coming to her Sir.”
She whispered as she still tugged at him.
He got to his feet and let the elf lead him to Nina. He closed his eyes. He didn’t want to look at her this close. He would see that she wasn’t breathing. He would not be able to bear it.
“Please. The Snape must open his eyes and see the one he loves. If you do truly loves her Sir, you must look at her. You has to tell her. Hold her and lets her feel it.”
Severus opened his eyes to meet Kali’s.
She lowered hers to Nina and back to his, indicating that he should do the same.
He turned his eyes to the woman on the floor, his eyes riveted to her. Kali pulled at him, wanting him to kneel beside the still form.
He did, His gaze never faltering.
He reached out a hand and touched her cheek. It was so warm. He brushed his finger along her slightly parted lips, those beautiful lips as they let past them the smallest breath of warmth. He moved his hand to her other cheek and stopped. He brought it back to her lips. Again, that faint warm breath across his fingers.
“Nina?” He choked. “Nina?”
He put one arm under her shoulders and pulled her to him, holding his lips a hairsbreadth away from hers. ‘Yes. Yes, he could feel it. He could feel her breathing. She wasn’t dead. Not yet. Nor would she be if Severus could help it.’
“Kali. Tell me what to do. Please tell me what to do.”
Tears were falling down his face but he did not care. All he cared about was that she lived.
“You is already doing it Sir. Show her. Hold her close and let her feel your love. Make the balance equal. Love is the one pure light. It balances the Dark. Let her feel your love. If it is true, she will live.”
Severus held her tightly to him. Kissing her. Small feathery kisses, on her head, on her cheeks, on her hands as he lifted each one in turn and kissed every finger. The arm holding her could feel as her shallow breathing became stronger with every kiss he placed upon her, stronger with every tear he shed for her.
“Sir?”
He kissed her forehead.
“Sir?”
He looked down. His eyes locking on to hers in disbelief.
“Nina. Oh Gods Nina.”
He sobbed as he held her tightly to his chest. He didn’t ever want to let go. He wanted to keep her like this forever.
“Pmf shmp mphh”
He loosened his hold and looked at her again.
She took a big gulp of air.
“Are you trying to suffocate me?” She asked him.
Severus half laughed, half cried as he held her in his arms and rocked her back and forth until she fell into a natural exhausted sleep.
“Ahem! Severus.”
He lifted his head to see Albus standing before them, his own eyes filled with tears as he held out a hand and placed it on the potions Masters shoulder. Albus had sent the other Professors off to see to their houses when Severus had made his way to Nina. Understanding his need for privacy, and getting a promise from Albus to let them know if Nina would be alright, they had left.
“Kali says that she will be just fine my boy. Just fine.”
Severus hung his head, buried his face into Nina’s neck and allowed himself to cry openly. No longer able to hide his emotions.
