LEECH
Chapter 26
With great difficulty, Severus kept his distance from Kathy for the next few days. Wanting to give her space and unwilling to force his company on her. He was also a little afraid that she might not want his friendship, that she was happier not seeing him.
Albus too gave her a few days grace, but he knew he could not leave things too long, there was still a war to win.
Kathy on the other hand was at a loss. She wanted nothing more than for Severus to come and see her, she wanted to tell him she was sorry, but was scared to approach him, and now he was avoiding her like the plague.
She’d reacted badly toward both him and Albus and she doubted either would ever forgive her, no matter what Molly said.
She missed their company on an evening, the acceptance and sense of belonging they gave her. She especially missed Severus, the kiss they’d shared still caused a reaction in her whenever she thought about it, which was often.
In the end it was Kathy who made the first move. It took a lot of guts on her part since it was not in her nature to approach others for any reason. She had a deep seated shyness, a fear of rejection, that she tried hard to disguise, it had taken David weeks to persuade her to go on a date with him, and a further two weeks to get her to go out with him a second time. Now she was afraid of any negative response that Severus might give if she tried to speak with him.
Kathy spent the whole of the next three days making cakes and pastries. She made a casserole and popped it in the oven, when it was time for Severus to return from his morning classes, she placed a large tray with several cakes and a fruit pie on the floor in front of the locked door that led from her living room to his office.
At the end of the afternoon classes she did the same with the beef casserole.
Once she knew supper in the hall was over, she placed the jam roly poly at the door.
At the end of three days Severus thought he might go insane. Every time he entered his office he was assaulted by the aroma of pies, cakes and other foods that smelled so delicious he was hard put to eat anything once he reached the Great Hall. The food in there suddenly started tasting like cardboard. He knew the food was fine, but the mouth watering smells coming from Kathy’s rooms was ruining his taste buds and spoiling it for him. The aromas drifted through to his private quarters and he found himself dreaming about food when he went to bed at night.
When he returned after supper on the third day during which he’d barely eaten, again, he caught the aroma of cinnamon baked apples and his resolve broke.
He closed his eyes, breathed deeply, and let out a groan. “That woman will be the death of me.” He grumbled, removing his wand to unlock the door.
Kathy was standing with her ear to the door and could hear him groan. She quickly grabbed the dish of baked apples and ran with it into the kitchen, plonking on the table, then busied herself at the sink, humming casually as Severus marched into the room. She pretended she hadn’t heard him enter as she rubbed at a particularly stubborn piece of food stuck to an oven tray, but she genuinely jumped when his voice bellowed directly behind her.
“What do you think you are playing at?” He demanded.
Kathy dropped the tray into the sink with a splosh and tried to calm her heart, it was threatening to beat its way out of her chest. She turned. “Washing up, what does it look like.” Her voice held more bravado than she actually felt.
“Not the pots, this. Are you expecting an army?”
“No, not that its any of your business.”
He gaped at her for a minute. “Not my… of course its my business. You have been cooking all day every day, why on earth would you need all this food?”
“Oh, the elve’s got me this.” She stepped over to a tall cabinet. “It keeps everything fresh until I need it. They called it a cooling cabinet.” So I can make as much as I want, when I want, and put it in here.”
“You still don’t need it all, so why?”
“O don’t know, its something to do. Besides, Molly told me that if I take something to the next Order meeting, it would save her a lot of extra work.”
“Meanwhile I have to suffer because of it. You must stop. Immediately.”
Kathy looked at him aghast. “What?” She planted her hands on her hips. “I will not stop, its got nothing to do with you what I do with my time. Anyway, how does me baking make you suffer?”
“Because I have to smell it you foolish woman. It fills my office, drifts through to my study, my living room. Its driving me bloody insane. I cannot even enjoy my meals in the Hall because of you.”
“Ridiculous.” She snapped.
Severus was about to make some scathing remark when his stomach, almost starved of proper sustenance over the last few days, gurgled loudly. He clamped a hand over it, hoping to stay any more sounds of protest from the offending organ. It did not obey, instead sending out a cacophony of grumbles, rumbles and gloops. “Damn.” He muttered under his breath.
Kathy stared at him for a moment, then she giggled and took pity in him. “If you’re hungry… “ She waved a hand over the dishes on the table.
He scowled at her, but pulled out a chair and helped himself to a large helping of the beef casserole, along with a hefty chunk of bread. By the time he’d finished and followed it with two of the cinnamon apples, his mood was greatly improved.
Kathy put the rest of the food into the cabinet and settled down in the living room with a book, pretending to read.
Severus gave a loud belch of appreciation before standing and poking his head through the door. “Is it alright if I make a cup of tea?”
“Yes please, I’m about ready for one myself.”
He frowned, if she wanted one, why didn’t she make his at the same time? He made the tea anyway and took the tray through to place on the table between them. “Thank you for the meal, it was most enjoyable.”
“You’re welcome anytime.” She said casually, not looking up from her book.
He studied her silently for a while. “What are you reading?”
“What?” She asked, taken by surprise.
“The book, it can’t be very interesting, I wondered why you continued to read it.”
Kathy glowered at him now. “Who said its not interesting? Its very interesting as a matter of fact.”
“Really.” He drawled, relaxing into the chair and raising an eyebrow at her. “Then perhaps you would explain why you are reading it upside down.” The corners of his mouth twitched.
The look of horror on her face when she looked back at the book was enough to allow the twitches to win out and a smile spread across his face.
“It is not upside down.” She told him after examining the book.
“No it isn’t, but you had to check to be sure.” Severus said no more. Her red cheeks and the fact she refused to argue further was proof that he’d won this round, although he admitted to himself it was a close match. Actually he found her devious method of drawing him in very… Slytherinesc, and he’d got a good meal out of it so he was almost willing to call it a draw. But only almost.
