The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 26
Maxi bounced about outside the school gates waiting for Lucy.
As soon as Filch opened the gate he ran inside, sending the caretaker into a fit and almost knocking Lucy on her back.
“Maxi calm down. Sit.” She commanded after he slammed into her hard enough to send her back several steps.
Maxi obeyed and woofed, lifting his chin to show her a roll of parchment stuck in his collar.
“A letter, couldn’t it have waited until we got home?” She started to walk out the gate, only for the dog to leap in front of her, blocking her path. “Maxi, now stop it. Mr Filch wants to lock the gates.”
Maxi barked again, still blocking her exit and fixing his eyes on the scroll.
“Oh okay, I’ll read it, but then we have to go home.”
Filch wanted to tell her to get a move on, but with the hound from hell standing there, he preferred to keep the high metal gate between him and it, he held his tongue.
“Mr Filch, you can lock the gate.” Lucy told him.
He notice her voice was rather subdued and she did not look up from the letter. “What about that thing, he’ll have to go.”
“No, he stays with me.” She said quietly, turning and heading back towards the castle. Maxi walked close at her heels, he knew something was wrong, he just had no idea what.
In the castle Lucy headed for the Great Hall, hoping to find the staff. It was empty so she made for the staff room instead and knocked on the door.
“Who on earth would be knocking on the door?” Filius asked himself, short legs moving quickly across the staff room floor. “Miss Grindelwald, I thought you had already left.”
“I was about to, but Maxi met me at the gate with a letter. Gran went to visit her sister today, and she’s ill, grans sister that is, and she wants me to stay here for a few nights so she can stay with her.” Lucy drew in a big breath having said her piece without drawing breath once.
“Oh. Well come in, come in. I’ll contact the Headmaster.”
She entered the staff room along with Maxi, who immediately caused a stir when the several witches and wizards already in there caught sight of him.
“Noooo!” Severus moaned despairingly when he saw the big mop heading right for him.
Maxi was pleased to see the dark haired one, he was fun.
“Maxi no. Come back.” Lucy commanded as soon as she realised where he was headed. The last thing she needed was to aggravate the Potion Master when she had at least two weeks of being cloistered in the dungeons with him. “Sorry Professor, I’ll try and keep him out of your way.”
“Out of my way, what are you talking about girl? Why are you here? More to the point, why is it here?”
Lucy showed him the letter, which he read, then groaned when he passed it back.
“Merlin help us all if that thing’s staying here as well. I suggest you take him to Hagrid once the Headmaster has finished arranging accommodations for you. He cannot be allowed to run riot through the school.”
Lucy nodded, but she had no intention of taking Maxi anywhere. If she had to stay on this great mausoleum all night, she wanted the dog with her. She felt safer with Maxi by her side, he could go to Hagrid’s during the day.
“Poor Batilda. I’ll have the elves set up a room for you immediately. I assume you would prefer the dog to remain with you.”
“Yes please Headmaster if that‘s alright. He can go to Hagrid’s when I’m in class, I’d just feel safer if he’s with me on a night.”
Albus nodded and patted the dogs head.
Within half an hour the elves had her settled in a small room near to the staff room. It contained a single four poster bed and side cabinet, an old but comfortable squashy armchair by a blazing fire, a chest of drawers, and a small en suite with sink, toilet, claw foot tub and overhead shower. There was even a large cushion on the floor at the foot of the bed for Maxi, along with a large meaty bone.
“This is great, thanks.”
The elves bowed and blinked out, leaving her to get used to her new surroundings.
“Why me?” Severus growled at the Headmaster.
“Because I am too busy dealing with the letters of acceptance from the new influx of students, and you already know where Hetty lives. Besides, the girl will most likely feel more comfortable with you, she already knows you better than the rest of the staff.”
“Fine, but ‘Hound of the Baskerville’ stays here.”
“Very well, I will inform her during supper, then the pair of you can go when you‘ve finished eating.”
Severus scowled all the way back to his rooms. Albus wanted him to escort Lucy home this evening to collect her things. Clothes, books, toiletries etc. Enough to last her until the end of the week. Hetty said a few nights, but that could mean anything from three nights to a week and all Lucy had was the clothes she stood in.
Lucy was enjoying tucking into fillet steak with the rest of the staff, she felt very adult. It was not at all like when she was confined to the hospital wing.
Maxi was being spoiled by the elves, he had his own bowl of best steak set near one of the fireplaces, a large dish of water, and another large cushion on which to laze while the humans continued to eat. He knew better than to beg. When he was a pup, the mistress would point her stick and send painful zaps to his nose if he so much as sniffed near the table when she was eating or preparing food. Besides, the little creatures made sure he had plenty to eat and he only had to woof for them to provide him with another bone.
He whined when Lucy said he would have to stay here while she went home to collect some clothes and the rest of her books. But the great wizard with the white hair said he could stay with him until she returned and Maxi liked the old wizard.
Madam Pince lent her a warm cloak, the days were warm but the evenings could be quite chilly, and Lucy hurried down the steps and across the grounds, trying to keep up with Severus.
He opened the gates and walked through, waiting for her to exit. Assuming they were walking, Lucy only took a few steps while he locked the gates, the next thing she knew he grabbed her arm and she was standing at her grans gate feeling like she was about to lose her supper.
“What did you do that for? I wasn’t ready.” She complained.
He smirked and walked up the path. “You will have to open the door, I assume the wards are keyed to you. I would be classed as an intruder were I to attempt to enter first.”
“Be my guest.” She mumbled quietly. After apperating her without any warning she would like to see what the wards would do to him. The door opened for her and they stepped inside. Torches lit as they entered the living room. “Help yourself to coffee or tea while I pack some stuff.” Lucy told him, turning and heading up the stairs.
Severus watched her go, then made his way into the kitchen. While the tea was steeping he decided to take a look round the living room. It was a typical old witches home, crochet doilies on the wood surfaces, an array of moving photo’s in silver frames on a sideboard near the window. Knitted throws draped the back of the sofa and chairs and most of the furnishings were dark. Everything was clean and of good quality and there were no threadbare patches on the carpets and cushions. He could hear Lucy moving about on the floor above. She was rather heavy footed and when she came back downstairs lugging a heavy suitcase she sounded like a herd of hippogriffs.
