In the morning Molly took the kids up to the drawing room to
help her clean. The first ting they
tackled was the doxies in the curtains.
It took most of the morning and it was soon lunch time. Harry got to meet Kreacher when the nasty
little house elf tried to sneak in mumbling nasty comments rather loudly. Hermione kept insisting he wasn’t in his
right mind and they should be kind to him, but it was hard to feel anything but
contempt for Kreacher.
“What are you doing Kreacher?” came Sirius’ voice from the
hallway. He and James were heading
upstairs.
“Cleaning Master,” Kreacher answered as he bowed low to the
floor. James snorted and held back a
laugh, upon which Kreacher made a nasty, not quite under his breath, comment
about blood traitors.
“Away with you!” Sirius shouted. “You were no doubt trying to take something
else; the tapestry I’d bet.”
Kreacher denied it and continued his mumbling. “That’s it,” James growled and grabbed the
rotten house elf by the arm and swung him hard into the wall a few times,
causing the house to shake a little.
Then he tossed the creature out of the room. Kreacher flew over the railing and landed at
the bottom of the stairs with a thud.
Sirius chuckled and shook his head. “Feel better?”
“A little,” James grumbled.
“That’s horrible!” Hermione shouted.
James sighed, really not in the mood to deal with her. “Hermione, the only reason you have a problem
is because it’s a house elf. If it was a
wizard saying those things you’d be first in line to go after him and you know
it.”
Hermione’s cheeks reddened, but she went quiet for a moment. Then she started to say something and James
stopped her. “Don’t give me that line
about how he’s not right in the head either.
You’d be surprised how lucid he is when he doesn’t know he’s being
watched.”
Hermione gave up and angrily plopped down in a chair with
her arms crossed. Molly brought up a
plate of sandwiches. The Weasley boys
dug in, but Hermione had apparently lost her appetite, and Harry was busy
looking at the tapestry.
“It looks old,” he commented.
“It is,” Sirius said as he stepped up behind his
godson. “It has almost every member of
my family on it.”
“Where are you?” Harry asked, scanning the bottom.
Sirius pointed to a burn hole. “As I said, almost every member. The blood traitors are burned out and
forgotten.”
“You’re related to the Malfoys?” Harry asked when he found
Draco’s name.
Sirius nodded.
“You’ll find all pure blood families are related to each other through
blood or marriage. Since pure bloods are
dying out it doesn’t leave many options to those who insist on keeping their
blood pure.”
“Are you related to Dad?”
“Yes,” James answered.
“I think I told you I looked into my family tree when I found out who my
parents were. Sirius and I are third
cousins.”
“What about Lucius?”
James and Sirius looked at each other. “Should you tell him or shall I?” Sirius
asked, trying hard not to smile.
“Let’s just not go there,” James mumbled as he averted his
gaze to his feet. “We’re okay with it.”
Harry let it drop, but he couldn’t help wondering. If his dad and Lucius were related, that
meant he and Draco were related.
The days at Grimmuald Place
seemed to slip by. Harry spent his days
either cleaning or playing games. As it
turned out, James knew quite a few card games, and the two of them tried to
teach Ron and Hermione. Draco even
played with them when he came with his father.
His favorite card game was Hearts.
James was a skilled poker player, and Draco learned never to play him using
real money.
One evening Harry made his way down to the kitchen and found
his dad lying face down on the table wearing only a pair of sweatpants. Sirius was seated at the end of the table and
Lucius was standing to the side lightly brushing over James’ back with a
feather duster.
“Just keep in mind that there are children present,” Molly
grumbled while she tended to dinner.
“Who needs sex,” James mumbled in a muffled tone without
raising his head. “This is so much
better.”
Sirius chuckled and started lightly running his fingertips
down the soles of James’ feet, causing him to whimper and twitch slightly.
Harry cleared his throat and stepped into the room. Lucius threw the duster away and it clattered
on the floor near the corner. “Why’d ya
stop?” James whimpered and reluctantly got off the table.
“I’ve ironed and pressed your clothes dear,” Molly said to
Harry as she started cleaning off the table.
That was when it really sank in for Harry. The lump in his stomach came back. Everyone else noticed and James helped him to
a chair. “It’ll be all right,” James
tried to reassure his son. “You were
defending yourself. Fudge might not see
things that way, but it isn’t up to him.”
“Who’s going with me?” Harry asked in a flat tone.
“You’ll be going to work with Arthur in the morning,” Molly
answered. “You’ll wait in his office
until it’s time for the hearing.”
Harry didn’t eat much, and hardly said anything the rest of
the night. He was sent up to bed early,
which was fine with him because he wanted to be alone anyway.
Despite not getting much sleep, he woke at six. He continued to lie in bed and stare at the
ceiling until Molly came to wake him for breakfast. He was surprised to see James, Sirius, Remus,
and Tonks waiting for him in the kitchen.
“We had to see you off,” Sirius grinned up at him from the
table. He elbowed James whose head
rested on the table, a little puddle of drool by his mouth.
“Ow….” James hissed.
He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “You know, there really should be a law
against making people get up this early.”
Remus chuckled and shook his head. “Getting up bright and early isn’t so bad.”
“Bite your tongue…” James grumbled, accepting a cup of
strong tea from Molly.
“Thanks for the effort anyway,” Harry gave them a weak
smile.
He couldn’t eat breakfast either. He managed to down a small glass of orange
juice when Molly insisted he have something.
He felt like he was going to be sick when Arthur announced it was time
to leave. Everyone hugged Harry goodbye
and saw him off.
The house was full of tension while they waited for
news. They all knew that if everything
went as it should all would be fine, but they didn’t trust Fudge.
They didn’t expect to hear anything until mid afternoon, but
Harry was brought back after just few hours.
It seemed the time of the hearing had been moved up. Thankfully Harry had been able to make it and
was only a few minutes late. The best
news of all was that he had been cleared of all charges. Harry also told them that as he and Arthur
were leaving he’d seen Lucius talking to Fudge.
Lucius came by after lunch.
“Hello beautiful,” he smiled and greeted James with a kiss.
Harry got up and put his plate in the sink. “So, what were
you talking to Fudge about?” he asked boldly.
“I was gathering information,” Lucius answered. “And James, I would like to see you
upstairs.”
Molly watched the kids, particularly Fred and George, to
make sure they didn’t follow James and Lucius to listen in to their
conversation.
James followed Lucius into the bedroom and shut the door,
spelling it so they wouldn’t be overheard.
Such precautions were automatic with the twins around. “All right Lucius, spill,” James sighed as he
took a seat on the bed.
Lucius sat down beside him.
“As I’m sure you know, Fudge is very displeased that Harry’s been cleared. He had high hopes of having Harry tossed into
Azkaban.”
James nodded. “Yes, I
think that much is obvious.”
“Well…” Lucius continued.
“I went to Fudge today under the guise of
bribing him as usual, and I got him to talk about it. I honestly don’t know how Severus does
it… Since I’ve gotten to know Harry I’ve
become fond of him, but I had to stand there and listen to all those horrible
things… Somehow I managed to not only
listen but agree. Anyway, Fudge thinks it’s
high time the Ministry took back control of Hogwarts.”
“Isn’t it the Governors job to monitor the goings on at the
school?” James asked, not liking the way the conversation was going.
Lucius sighed. “Yes, it’s
been that way for a long time, but most of the Governors are in Dumbledore’s
pocket; even after recent events. Fudge
knows this and doesn’t like it one bit.
He thinks Dumbledore is going to try and turn the students into soldiers
so he can take over the Ministry.”
James rolled his eyes.
“That’s insane! Did he say what
he plans to do about this?”
Lucius nodded. “He’s
going to choose the next Defense against the Dark Arts teacher and send them to
Hogwarts as a Ministry representative.”
James’ eyes widened.
“Are you fucking serious?”
Lucius sighed and lay back on the bed. “I wish I weren’t. You do realize the potential problems this
could cause?”
James crawled over to lie beside him. “I have a few ideas. What are we going to do about it?”
Things seemed more peaceful the rest of the summer. Now that Harry knew he was going back to
Hogwarts he was much less tense. Given
what he knew, James wasn’t so sure that was a good thing. He hadn’t told anyone what Lucius had
divulged. He didn’t see any need to
worry Molly further. She was practically
falling apart as it was.
School letters came out a bit later than usual, due to the
fact that Dumbledore was trying to fight Fudge.
He’d tried desperately to find another teacher for the vacant position,
but no one would take the job.
Molly took the clean laundry and went upstairs to get the
kids’ book lists so she could go out and get everything for them. She came back down moments later
beaming. “Guess who’s a Prefect!”
James tensed a little. “Who?” he asked.
“Ron!” she practically squealed.
James let out a deep sigh and relaxed. “Oh gods, don’t ever scare me like that
again…”
Lucius rolled his eyes.
“You are not normal…” he commented.
Sirius raised an eyebrow at him. “And you just noticed this?”
Lucius chuckled. “No,
I noticed about five minutes after I met him.”
James grinned up at the blonde and fluttered his eyelashes.
The kids came down just then. Ron looked like he was on cloud nine, but
Harry looked upset. Molly decided that
instead of a normal dinner that night they would have a celebration after she
got back from Diagon Alley.
“We’re you a Prefect Dad?” Harry asked his father.
The water Remus was taking a sip of was suddenly sprayed all
over the table. James motion to Remus
who was cleaning it up. “Does that
answer your question?”
“No, we were too busy causing trouble,” Sirius
chuckled. “Remus here was the Prefect
along with your mother.”
Remus nodded. “I
think Dumbledore chose me because he hoped I’d rub off on my two best
friends. I failed in that though. I was horribly corrupted by them instead.”
“James has a talent for that doesn’t he?” Sirius
commented.
“Well Draco is a Prefect and I’m thrilled about it,” Lucius
said. “More thrilled than Draco it seems.”
“I don’t envy that kid,” James sighed. “Those Snakes aren’t very forgiving.”
Harry seemed to cheer up as the evening wore on. James had an idea about what was bothering
him. Everyone had expected Harry to be
made Prefect. The fact that Ron was a Prefect
had completely blindsided everyone, including Ron.
James caught Harry on his way up to bed. “Be happy for your friend,” he said softly.
“I am…” Harry insisted.
James raised an eyebrow.
“Come on Harry, I know better.
You expected to be Prefect, though I don’t know why. You’re infamous for getting into
trouble. Yes, I know Ron gets into
trouble with you, but you’re kind of the leader. Remus was always getting into trouble with
me, but he was made Prefect. He said
himself it was probably only to help keep me in line. I don’t know why Dumbledore chose Ron, but
whatever the reason, this is his thing.
Remember last year when he was upset about always being in your shadow?”
Harry nodded. “Yeah,
I guess you have a point.”
“Of course I do…” James smiled. “I am a genius.”
Harry laughed and James gave him a fake hurt look.
Suddenly they heard a scream coming from the drawing room
upstairs. They ran up with a few others
right behind them. Molly was huddled in
the corner sobbing, and Ron’s lifeless body lay on the floor.
As soon as James stepped into the room Ron’s body
transformed into a large spider. James
shrieked and dove behind Remus shoving him forward. “Kill it!”
Remus rolled his eyes.
The boggart turned into a full moon and Remus sent it spinning
away. “A full grown wizard who’s faced
all kinds of things… screams and runs from a spider…” he mumbled under his
breath.
James frowned. “Those
eight legs are creepy!”
Lucius pulled James close.
“Don’t worry my love, I’ll protect you from the spiders.”
“At least somebody loves me…” James grumbled as he and
Lucius headed off to bed.
