Chapter 25 – Trail by fire

A scream of pure fury was heard across the whole of Hogwarts and down into Hogsmead. It even caused the Death Eaters on the other side of wards to pause in their continued attempts breech the wards. Shimmering wings ripped themselves out of Harry’s back as he shook in fury at the sight of his mate’s form hanging limply. Everyone present could feel the magic and the rage rippling around the young man. Luna and Draco stayed fixed behind Harry acting as his anchors but both showed concern on their faces for Severus.

“Why? WHY?! Why would you join that mad man?!” Harry screamed. “I know you felt loyalty towards Dumbledore McGonagall but cant you clearly see he’s gone off the deep end?!”

Minerva glanced at Albus briefly to see that he had stopped dancing around like a madman and was grinning maniacally. “He’s only eccentric, and loyalty isn’t something you can talk about, is it now Mr Potter? How could you turn your back on him?!”

“Are you daft woman?! He’s mad! He used me and wanted me to be just a perfect weapon! Even Hogwarts turned on him!” Harry turned his attention from McGonagall as she was clearly a lost cause and focused on Colecrow. “What about you Professor, what caused you to suddenly join the monster raving loony party?”

Colecrow threw her head back and cackled. “Stupid Potter. I never left his service! I’m loyal to the Dark Lord until I die”

Harry growled as he realised that McGonagall had hired a Death Eater. A quick glance in her direction was enough to glimpse the smug look that adorned her face. ‘She knew’ he thought.

Harry heard Fawkes voice clearly in his mind and felt a sense of clam wash over him. ‘Breath my lord. You need to keep a calm head as they try and make you loose yourself. You must focus, control your magic.’

Glaring at Colecrow Harry sneered at her, “You can’t be that much of a loyal Death Muncher that I haven’t even heard of you before”

This didn’t have the desired effect as she merely cackled again. “Silly Potter, you didn’t think I’d come as myself would you? HA! I took a page out of my masters book and had fun with my name” She raised her wand and everyone tensed, bracing themselves for an attack that never came. Using her wand she scrawled her name ‘TARA COLECROW’ in flames in front of her. With another swish the letters started to rearrange themselves until they formed her true name, ‘ALECTO CARROW’

“That’s right boy!” She screamed “I’ve been right under yours and dear Sevy’s noses all this time, nearly succeeded in giving you an ‘accident’ a few time as well.” She gave him a smug look as she pointed her wand at Severus. “I don’t know why you’re posturing boy! We know you’re weak and that your magic is off due to the spawn you’re carrying. So you won’t be able to stop me when I do this… CURIO!”

The red spell had barely left her wand before Harry let out a primal scream and flames enveloped his body before shooting out straight for Carrow. She hardly had time to gasp let alone defend herself before the flames over came her. She only screamed for a few second before she was silent and collapsed to the floor. The flames didn’t stop until she was nothing but ash on a patch of burst grass.

McGonagall was beyond shocked. The boy shouldn’t have been able to levitate a feather let alone cremate a human being! Both Albus and Voldermort look shocked and angry and she knew the anger was going to focus on her as Carrow was nothing more than a pile of ash now.

“You told us he was weak! You told us he was vulnerable! Stupid woman! CURIO!” bellowed Dumbledore.

Voldermort rolled his eyes. Couldn’t they understand that they had bigger things to worry about? They had clearly made a mistake, not that he would ever admit it and now had an enraged and pregnant phoenix. To top it off their exit was blocked by the wards. “Focus old man!” He sneered.

While everyone was distracted Harry decided to use the diversion, ‘Fawkes, get Sev! Go!’ There was no hesitation in the birds moves as he quickly flashed to Severus’s form and flashed away again.

Dumbledore screamed in frustration as he removed the curse from Minerva. “Look what you’ve done now Minney! We’ve lost the big bad bat! You are such a disappointment, never should have trusted you with something so important.”

Minerva righted herself and glared at Harry, “This is all your fault Potter! Avada….”

Before she had a chance to finish the curse Harry muttered in latin and stomped his foot hard on the ground. The earth itself cracked from where his foot landed straight to Minerva. Opening the very ground under her feet causing her to fall in a pit of flames. Her screams were cut off as the ground closed again.

Using Minerva’s death as a distraction Dumbledore fired off a silent slashing hex aimed at Harry’s stomach. Luckily for Harry, Draco hadn’t taken his eyes off the enemy and deflected the spell back to old Dumbles.

“Gah! Meddling kids!” Dumbledore groused.

Unfortunately this caused Harry to redirect his attention back towards them. ‘Draco, Luna, you know what to do. Keep them back while I gather the energy I need.’ He spoke to them in their minds.

‘Understood’ was their simple combined response.

Voldermort sick of being passive said, “I don’t know what you did Potter but it doesn’t matter. You will be taken out no matter what and I’ll be the one to do it.” He, along with Dumbledore started sending a barrage of spell at Harry.

Harry closed his eyes and focused on his core and his phoenix magic. Meanwhile Draco and Luna were chanting under their breath while holding up some mini wards that they had created.

Back in the entrance hall Severus started to regain consciousness. He found himself on the floor with Hermione Granger at his side. “Oh thank goodness Sir! I healed the bump on your head as well as some other spell damage”

Severus shot up and instantly regretted it as his head span. “What happened? The last thing I remember is setting the wards…. Oh my god! The attack! What happened, where’s Harry?”

Hermione had tears in her eyes as she answered, “It’s still going on outside, Harry sealed everyone in here before going outside with Malfoy and Luna. Sir, there’s been dreadful screams and then Fawkes brought you here. You’ve not been here long before you woke up Sir.”

Severus leapt to his feet and launched himself at the doors and commanded them to open. As he made it out of the castle and down the steps he could see Harry gathering magic behind the some sort of shield that was being battered by both Dumbledore and Voldermort. ‘NO! My mate! How dare they attack him! He shouldn’t be trying to use his magic! It wont work!’ he screamed in his mind ‘HARRY’ as he raced to his mate’s side with his wings ripping from his back.

‘HARRY’ echoed through his mind as he felt his mate approaching. It was in this instant that everything happened. He’d gathered the correct amount of power, which had taken less than a minute. He opened his eyes that were now completely red, his magic reached out for Draco, Luna and Severus’s magic and combined with some of theirs with his. The ward dropped as a wave of flames and magic shot out towards Voldermort and Dumbledore.

Both tried unsuccessfully to defend themselves against the onslaught. They seemed to be surrounded but a funnel of magic. Nothing could be seen apart from the magic, although screams could be heard from within. Suddenly 6 orbs of light could be seen zooming towards the funnels of magic. One went inside Dumbledore’s and 5 went inside Voldermort’s. Screaming from both increased before going deathly quite.

The funnels seemed to take this to mean that their job was complete. All that was left were a pile of clothes where the dark lords once stood. While the magic fuelled funnel encompassed the wizards, Harry and Severus changed into their phoenix forms. Surprisingly enough and for the first time Draco and Luna also both transformed into a phoenix. When Harry notice he trilled at them with amusement. Once the magic dissipated they all reverted back to their human forms.

Harry approached the bundle of clothes that use to be Voldemort and crouched down, pulling a baby out of the bundle and carefully wrapping the baby in some of the left over material.

Severus approached the other bundle in awe, “Harry, what did you do?”

Harry smiled at him, “I used some of my phoenix essence to revert them back to a purer state” He paused and a frown appeared on his face, “It also appears that both of them had a split their souls some how. That’s why it took so long because those orbs were parts of their souls. Looks like Voldy was a naughty one, I think I counted 5 orbs.”

Draco peered over Harry’s shoulder “What are you going to do with them?”

“Find a nice loving home for them and hopefully they wont turn out like they did. And if they do I’ll stop them before they hurt anyone. We know to keep an eye on them now. It also helps that some of their magic fuelled the transformation. Their magical core has been cut in half. They’ll still be powerful, just not stupidly so now.”

Severus handed baby Dumbledore over to Draco, who didn’t look to happy with this and Harry handed baby Voldermort to Luna. Severus then wrapped his arms around his mate. “Let’s get you inside. Then you can explain what happened, how you can do magic again and why I woke up with Miss Granger tending to me?”

Harry had the decency to blush as he was escorted back into the castle.
