A/N: I bet you thought I forgot about this story... well I didn't I just lost my HP groove for a while. It's still not fully back but it's better than it was. I do apologize for the wait though.
“What about this one? Reginald Rossmoor?” Harry asked as he bounced James on his leg somewhat absently. He was being frustratingly fussy and Harry would really rather him be asleep but that was apparently not happening anytime soon.
“He’s dead,” Draco offered. “I think his heir is still around but last I heard he was in Africa terrorizing muggles.”“He sounds charming…” Hermione muttered. The pale Incubus cast Hermione a bit of a glare. “If you keep saying that I will leave,” he stated. It had been with quite a few protests and the guarantee of an unbreakable vow that Hermione and Ron would tell nobody about what he told them or about his heritage but Draco had agreed to help Harry as much as he could with identify James’ father or, as Draco called him, James’ sire. The unbreakable vow he’d taken prevented him from telling the hero directly but that didn’t mean he couldn’t inform them of the status of other Incubi that he was aware of.“Are you sure this… Rossmoor didn’t come back?” Ron asked, eyeing the blonde with no small amount of suspicion.Draco rolled his eyes. “For one thing, the Rossmoor line are a bunch of idiots. Also filthy gingers like some other family of idiots I know. I doubt very much they would produce a black egg like James’. So lay off, Weasel.”“Moving on!” Harry said before Ron could start on the retort he was clearly ready with. “Delinus Hargrove.”“Don’t know the Hargroves personally,” Draco said casually.Harry nodded and put a line through that name. Since Draco did know Harry’s Incubus not knowing any Hargroves eliminated that one quite soundly. “So… how many are missing from this registry?” Hermione asked. She still had a slight frown on her face but at least she was attempting a civil tone unlike her husband.Draco studied the paper that was on the coffee table for a moment before shrugging. “I’d say about half the families in the UK are on it,” he answered. “But there’s no source of any better list so you should feel lucky there’s even that many.”“How about Sidonius Balder?” Harry asked. The blonde paused for a moment and seemed to think. “He’s dead. None of his heirs survived but one of his children did,” he supplied after a moment.“What’s the difference?” Ron asked with a frown of confusion.Harry couldn’t help but be confused as well but just shifted James in his lap as he allowed the Incubus to answer. “The difference is… an Heir is your direct genetic offspring. Like I am to my father. And James is to his. We were born with minimal inclusion of our ‘mother’s biology,” Draco explained though he looked awkward while doing so. Harry thought he might have even seen a slight blush on his face though obviously Malfoy would deny it if brought up. “A child is the more… traditional sense. Just because we can reproduce mostly by ourselves doesn’t mean we can’t find a female human or a succubus and go through the whole… human version of events.”“So one is only half Incubus and the other is full Incubus essentially,” Hermione finished. “And you said one of Balder’s children survives?”“Survived,” Draco corrected. “Dead now. Line changed names a few times but it still exists.”“So, if this line is now partially human does that mean that it couldn’t have… done this to Harry?” Ron asked with a vague gesture across the table at Harry was still dealing with a stubborn James. Harry did his best to not be offended. The whole situation was awkward for everyone involved after all. Ron was at least trying to be sensitive. He was just bloody horrible at it.“Well, really it depends on how many generations removed it is. Chances of the Incubus trait popping back up gets lesser and lesser with more human blood included. Supposedly mixing with another magical being like another Incubus or a Veela or something tends to trigger the resurfacing of it but I’m not sure how true that is,” Draco explained. “One of the descendants of Balder could very well have been born with the Incubus trait and sired James.”“I don’t suppose you know who Balders descendants are?” Harry asked. The Incubus gave him a dry look. “You do know he died about three hundred years ago, right? After that many generations of being diluted with humans… no my family stopped keeping in touch with them,” he said.“Let me guess… they’re not worthy of your company since they’re not Pure Incubus,” Ron said with quite a bit of sarcasm.Malfoy fixed Ron with his best superior glare. “Why would we associate as Incubi with those that aren’t?” he asked. “You’re lucky I’m even talking to you, Weasel.”“Okay okay,” Harry said before the fight could break out. He felt like he was constantly refereeing the two of them to avoid any major missteps. “So, Balder is possible but we’ll have to look into it further. I think that’s a good enough start for now.”Draco nodded some and got to his feet. “Then I’ll be going. The quality of air has gone down in here,” he said not without distaste. The three of them didn’t even attempt to stop him as he left the house and probably immediately Disapparated back to his mansion.Hermione smacked Ron lightly across the shoulder. “Ow! What’s that for?”“Did you really have to keep fighting with him?” she demanded. “He’s our best shot at finding out who James’ father is!”Ron scowled and folded his arms over his chest. “I can’t help it if he’s still a complete git. Besides, not like he’s actually being very helpful,” he muttered. Ron had been against Malfoy being involved in the search from the very beginning especially since he already knew the answer and wouldn’t tell them. Ron refused to care that Malfoy took an unbreakable oath not to.“He’s more helpful than this list,” Harry pointed out as he pushed the paper away from him slightly. “Couldn’t you just ignore that he’s here for a few hours?”“Maybe if he wasn’t being so… so… Malfoy,” Ron said.Harry hadn’t been aware that Draco’s last name was now a verb but decided it was best to not mention Ron’s ridiculous excuse. Draco had actually been mostly reigned in while he was there. He hadn’t been able to help himself when it came to insulting Ron or his family but then again Ron hadn’t exactly taken the high road either. “You know, you two really do need to stop fighting at least until we get this straightened out,” Harry said as he got to his feet with a squirming James in his arms. “It’s not helping anything.”Ron frowned even more but didn’t bother responding. Hermione got up from her seat and pulled Ron up with her. “I’ll start seeing what I can find about Balder, Harry. I’ll let you know the moment I find something,” she said.Harry nodded, not doubting that for a moment Hermione would be able to figure something out. After seeing both her and Ron out of the house and then locking the door, Harry carried his son to the nursery to try yet again to get him to sleep. “You sir, need to actually go to bed this time,” Harry said. “You’ve been up far too long and you’re getting grumpy.”James continued to fuss even as he was put down in the crib but Harry didn’t indulge him this time. Eventually James would tire himself out and drop off to sleep. Harry gently closed the door behind him and muffled his son’s cries a bit. He could still hear that James wasn’t passed out yet but Harry resigned himself to just waiting it out.He went back to the living room to clean up the files and research spread across the coffee table. He quickly locked it all up in the safe in his office. It was not information that he wanted anyone but a trusted few to know he was researching. It would invite just too many questions. By the time Harry had cleaned up, James had quieted down quite a bit and Harry was sure he was well on his way to finally falling asleep. As Harry went to the kitchen to do some cleaning up he noticed through the window that there was something moving in the shadows outside. He quickly grabbed his wand and went to the backdoor. He doubted very highly it was his Incubus as that man was always far stealthier but Harry wasn’t about to take a chance that whoever or whatever was in his yard was harmless. Harry slowly opened the door and stepped out onto the porch. There was slight movement in the shadows and Harry shot a stunning spell directly at the movement. There was a small cry of someone being startled and then the sound of a collapse. Harry was actually a little surprised he’d hit anything at all but went over to investigate anyway. When he reached the bushes it only took a second for him to recognize the bespectacled man lying there. He sighed heavily.Martin Kinney was a reporter. A spectacularly bad reporter at that. He seemed to want to be the next Rita Skeeter but had none of the talent for snooping that she did. He’d been in trouble lots of times for breaking and entering and stalking. He did have Rita’s ability to take everything out of context and just make up things on the fly even though he had no sort of magical quill that Harry was aware of. Harry should have known that Martin would smell a story and try to snoop around. Though he was terrible at actually doing it his instincts were fairly good when it came to knowing where potentially damaging stories were. He had been the main culprit behind several stories and interviews with women claiming to be James’ mother.Harry didn’t bother to revive the reporter and simply called the office to have some Aurors pick him up. He wasn’t going to give Martin the chance to try and ask questions that he would then make up the answers to. He just wanted the man off his lawn as quickly and harmlessly as possible. What Martin seemed to constantly forget was that Harry had connections far reaching in the Ministry and he wasn’t afraid to use them to avoid the media. Shacklebolt sent two Aurors to pick the reporter up and drag him away in only fifteen minutes. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
