“Come on Mione, show me!” Ron pleaded excitedly.
“For the hundredth time Ron, NO!” Hermione shrieked. Harry had told Ron as much as he could at lunch the day before and he hadn’t stopped hounding her about wanting to see her animagus form since. She refused to show it to him until they were safely in the DADA classroom for Harry’s lesson.
Ron pouted. “Why are you being so secretive?”
Hermione growled and turned around. “Because I am SUPPOSED to be. Have you forgotten every bloody thing Harry said?”
Ron huffed. “Fine then, make me wait.”
“I will,” Hermione snapped and marched into the great hall for dinner. If he begged her one more time she was going to hex him to bits.
‘He’s like a dog with a bone, that one,’ Draco said.
‘I’ll say,’ she growled back. ‘Did you get a chance to talk to him?’ Draco was supposed to speak with Snape about the bites. They were worried that it would upset their bond.
‘Yes. He said not to worry. It wouldn’t be anything pressing but he would discuss it further tonight. I think he’s waiting for Melody.’
‘That makes sense. Did he say why she didn’t show yesterday?’ She asked. Melody had failed to show up to their lesson. In her absence, Snape decided that research took precedence that night and had taken Draco’s list. He’d gone to the Manor to retrieve the books Draco wanted while the couple spent their time pouring through texts on the effects of bezoars on different potions. They didn’t want any mistakes when the time came to administer Merlin’s potion.
‘He got a floo call from Harmony when he got back to his study last night. Apparently, Melody was so tired after her last set that Alex slipped her a dreamless sleep potion. She slept the entire day. I’m sure she’s a bit put out about that today.’
Hermione bit back a grin at that. It seemed that Alex was just as devious as Melody was. She hoped she didn’t actually rip his fangs out of his head. She wouldn’t put it past her though. That woman had a temper.
“Why does Ron look like a kicked puppy?” Ginny asked, seating herself next to Hermione.
She bent over to whisper in her ear. “He’s angry because I won’t show him my form.”
“Good grief. Doesn’t he realize that it would be dangerous?”
“He’s too excited to care,” Hermione sighed.
Harry plopped down next to them. He looked tired. Ron had been chattering non-stop ever since he’d told him they’d be working on animagus forms. “I think I should have just made it a surprise.”
“You think?” Hermione snapped, irritated by the red head’s constant badgering. Harry gave her a wary glance. “I’m sorry Harry, but my patience is wearing thin.”
“I know. It’s just a bit longer though,” Harry said softly.
Hermione nodded and started trying to eat. It was hard with Ron glaring at her like she’d stolen his last chocolate frog. She’d managed to get down half a sandwich before she couldn’t stand it anymore. He’d started mumbling. “That’s it,” she hissed as she pushed her plate away and got up to leave.
“I’ll go with you,” Ron said, getting up.
“You do and you’ll be missing a limb!” Hermione growled as she leveled her wand at him.
“But-“
“No buts Ronald. I said later and I meant it. Leave me alone until then,” she said tersely and then stalked off. She was so angry she was practically sparking magic when she reached the DADA classroom. She knocked a bit harder than usual and was permitted entrance.
“You need to calm down sweetheart,” Melody said softly as she watched the angry witch stomp in.
Hermione screamed in frustration. “How can I calm down when Ron won’t leave me be for five seconds? He walked into the girl’s loo this morning to beg me to show him my form!”
Melody chuckled. “Well, you can hardly blame him for being eager. Still, I think following you into the bathroom is a bit much.”
“Damn straight.”
Melody guffawed and even Snape smirked a bit at that. “Oh sweetheart, I think I’ve rubbed off on you.” She was wiping tears from her eyes.
A knock on the door stopped Hermione from replying. Draco walked in after Snape permitted him entrance. “Still hungry?” He asked her, producing a wrapped sandwich from his pocket.
“Yes.” She thanked him for the sandwich.
“Weasley is a piece of work,” Draco said, shaking his head. “So, before he gets here and stands vigil outside the door until Potter comes for his lesson, let’s settle some things. Melody, has our bond changed?”
Melody cocked her head. “You bit each other didn’t you?” They nodded. “I see a second blood bond on top of the one you unwittingly made in the bathroom and the one at your wedding. It just looks a bit stronger, nothing too bad. If you start obsessing over each other, let me know. We can do the vampire binding to quell it. It’s the one Alex and I used.” She showed him her wrist. On closer inspection, they could see that it was a different type of knot than the one they had. “We’d need to actually be hand fasted to be bound magically like you two. It’s why Sev and I can still combine magic easily.”
“Are you saying that we can’t dual cast with anyone else?” Hermione asked, conjuring a glass of water to drink.
“No, you can still dual cast; you’ll just be extremely limited, probably to offensive spells only. You won’t be able to produce a shield like you did a few weeks ago with anyone else. The biggest problem with you two is that you can’t connect with a phenom because you’ve got more than just a fidelity bond on you. I actually chose not to be magically bound to Alex for that reason. We’re separated too often and it would make it really damned hard to cast with Sev. We still achieve balance, can still share but I can also share easily with others, even Potter if need be.”
“Well that’s going to put a damper on things,” Draco said softly.
“While you two will be limited to using each other, your situation gives you advantages we won’t ever have,” Melody said.
“Like what?” Hermione asked.
“Well, for starters, you will be able to share magic over a great distance instead of having to be in the same area. Sev and I can cast if we’re in the same room. You two can cast if you’re in the same country.”
“That’s impossible,” Draco said incredulously.
“Not for you two. You’ve been bound mind, body, and soul Draco. You’re practically invincible as long as you’re both alive. That brings us to my next concern. I only noticed it after your attack the other day Hermione. You’re going to have to deal with each other’s pain and fear and the instinct to protect each other. If I kick one of you, you both feel it. Therefore, if one of you is compromised, the other will have to fight twice as hard not to be in the same shape.”
“How are we going to stop that?” Hermione asked softly.
“Well, stopping the knee-jerk reaction to respond to distress is a matter of conditioning. Sev will have to teach you that because I obviously haven’t managed to get it down. The pain is something you already have the knowledge to stop yourselves. You said you could disconnect your senses. You’ll have to learn to do this both ways while still being connected to each other. It’s going to be extremely intense learning it and extremely dangerous. You weren’t out very long last time but if you disconnect from each other and yourselves, well I think you know what could happen.”
“Merlin,” Draco breathed.
“Oh it gets better,” Melody said with a laugh. “You’ve got to manage the connection while blocking and shielding during a bout of legilimency. You know the red eyed bastard loves to play about in people’s minds. Hermione will need to hide in the back of your mind, help you shield and direct, and keep herself shielded from any pain you might experience at his hand without giving herself away. It’s much more extensive than simply blocking your thoughts. You’ll also need to learn to do it both ways because there could be a time when the roles are reversed.”
“That sounds impossible,” Hermione breathed.
“Well, it won’t be easy but we’ll both help you as best we can. Sev is better at Occlumency than me and the Dark Lord combined but I’m better at legilimency. Between the two of us, I think we can make it work. We’ll need to work non-stop until you get it down. You’ve only got until the Easter break to master it. You’ve also got to control your reactions to being separated as well as your magical flow over that distance. I should say that your combined lessons with Harry and Ginny are at an end after today.”
“How on earth are we going to do this?” Hermione asked numbly. “We’ve got school work and then we’ll have to be holed up in the ROR all of our spare time. Then there is still the potion to look after.”
“You have Sev’s help with the potion. I think school work can take a back seat for now. Do enough to keep your grades up but say goodbye to being weeks ahead and extra credit.” Melody chuckled when she saw Hermione’s horrified look. “War is coming sweetheart. Consider it a sacrifice. Besides, you could ace your newts today.”
Hermione nodded slowly. She could do this. Grades were important but lives were more important. “What’s my excuse to everyone? They’ll be searching for me if I suddenly disappear.”
“We’ll think of something,” Melody said. “I have a feeling that I’m going to have to bring some more coffee for you two.” She chuckled. “But for now, we have a bit of time to work on your protection instincts. When you called for help the other day, Draco just about lost it. You’ll have to control that. It won’t do to react that badly if you’re in the middle of a duel…or in the presence of a certain scaled lord.”
“Where do we start?” Draco asked.
“We’ll start with hand to hand combat. One of you will stand by while the other watches and ONLY watches. No interference. You’ll also have to deal with their pain. We’ll work on blocking it later but for now, it is important that you get used to it. It’s almost a given that your concentration will slip at some point and you’ll have to deal with the consequences. Hermione, you first.”
Hermione nodded and stood up. She wasn’t near as good as Melody and was a bit frightened to face her. Melody smiled softly. “Don’t worry. We’ll start at your level. I’m not that cruel.”
They took their defensive stances and started sparing. Draco couldn’t handle sitting still so he settled for standing up and leaning against his godfather’s desk. Snape kept a wary eye on his godson to make sure he was handling everything alright. He knew this would be difficult for the boy. He was fine until Melody landed a particularly brutal kick to Hermione’s solar plexus.
Draco sprung forward to help her but was held back by his godfather who had suddenly jumped his desk and grabbed him in a bear hug. “Do NOT react. She’s fine. You’ve got to trust her to take care of herself.”
Draco growled in frustration and shot off a few sparks. In response, Hermione started glowing a bit.
“Shit!” Melody shrieked. “Dial it down now! You two flare together and you’ll tear down half the fucking school!”
Draco took deep cleansing breaths as Hermione got up and walked over to him. He embraced her gently and shivered as they glowed so brightly that their eyesight was momentarily taken. This was going to be much more difficult than they’d originally thought. After they regained control, he’d realized something very profound. “Why did we flare?”
Melody sighed. “Draco, the reason that no one person possesses as much magic as you two have is because it is extremely hard to keep that much power under control. Even normal people that aren’t particularly powerful have flares in extremely emotional circumstances. Have you ever seen someone make it snow when they were in a bad mood or perhaps have their hair crackle in anger?”
Draco nodded. “One time, Pansy was so angry her hair stood on end.”
Melody nodded. “It’s the same principal. Your emotions are tied to your magic, just like your intent. You have to be angry, want to kill to cast the killing curse. You have to mean it. With you two, it is even more important that you control your emotions. You won’t make it snow a bit, you’ll cause a blizzard. Your hair won’t stand on end, everyone else’s will. If you flare, you’ll take out the school instead of a few sparks flying through your fingers.”
“So being emotional is a big no no,” Hermione said softly.
“Exactly. Now, since Draco’s reaction was so strong, I’m calling in reinforcements. Sev, get Celeste and I’m going to call Alex. At least we can throw a shield strong enough to contain you two until we can get you outside if something horrible does happen.”
It only took a few minutes until Celeste and Alex stood in the room with them. Melody glared at Alex a moment before she resumed her defensive stance. “Now Hermione, this time, block your body. Don’t let me catch you wide open like that again.”
They started again and Hermione kept up rather well. Draco had taken to gripping the desk behind him to keep himself grounded. The wood digging into his hands gave him something to focus on until he realized that he was hurting Hermione’s hands as well. He balled his hands into fists and started tapping his feet nervously. She was doing well but Melody was still landing far too many kicks for his comfort. Suddenly, Hermione slipped and Melody caught her in the rib. It was an accident but he heard and felt the crack.
He lost it at that point and sprung forward to grab her. Snape caught him in another bear hug as Alex flew over to repair her rib. “It’s a shallow fracture. Just a flick and it’ll be fixed,” he said as he repaired it. “There, how does that feel?”
“Twinges a bit but I’ll be fine,” Hermione gasped.
Draco was shaking, trying to contain the swell of magic that had sprung up in him.
Melody eyed him warily. “Can you hold it?”
“I’m trying,” he growled as sparks flew from his fingertips.
“Let’s switch,” Melody said softly. “A different focus might help.”
He nodded and walked jerkily over to the middle of the room to face her. Hermione kissed his temple and reassured him that she was fine before she limped over to the desk. Alex started checking her over to make sure nothing else had been hurt while she watched her husband face Melody down.
The redhead had started out much harder with him, forcing him to give her his entire focus. His magic started calming down about five minutes into the spar. Kicks got harder, punches weren’t thrown as much, and blocks were more forceful. Hermione found that she was having an extremely hard time staying over to the side. She could feel every hit.
She fidgeted more than once and even jumped forward to stop a particularly brutal hit to Draco’s thigh. Alex put a hand on one shoulder and Snape put his hand on the other. Her blood father leaned down and whispered in her ear. “Draco can do this. Trust him.”
She nodded and watched as the fight ensued. It was almost time for Harry’s lessons to begin and they were still going at it. She was finding it very hard to keep her magic under control. She could feel his fatigue and wanted nothing more than to make it stop. In a lightning fast move, Melody swung around and threw a kick straight to his chest. Draco gasped and staggered a bit.
“NO!” Hermione screamed and lunged for him. Snape held her fast and her magic lashed out, stinging him. Draco’s responded immediately and flared dangerously.
“Fuck! Shield!” Melody yelled as their magic sparked again, meeting in the middle. All four adults threw up shield charms and watched in horror as Draco flew through the door and landed with a thud against the far hall wall. Hermione landed against the opposite wall on the side of the classroom.
“Shit, shit, shit,” Melody breathed as she ran to check on Draco. Alex zipped over to check Hermione. They were alive but unconscious.
“What the bloody hell was that?” Ron yelled as he, Harry and Ginny stared wide eyed while Melody checked Draco’s pulse.
She closed her eyes in frustration as she fought to figure out a good explanation for their predicament. “Just get in the damned classroom Weasley,” she bit out and proceeded to try and wake Draco.
“Here, I’ve got it,” Alex said behind her, having already levitated Hermione over to an empty space on the floor. He secured Draco’s neck with magic and levitated him back into the room. Melody made sure no one else was watching and closed and warded the door. The three bewildered students had already filed in and been restrained to desks to keep from interfering.
“Well?” She asked Alex.
“The shields held,” Alex said after a moment. “They’ll be sore all right but amazingly, nothing is broken. I’m sure they’ve both got concussions though. They’ll need to be monitored all night.”
“Thank Merlin,” Melody said. “Now we just have to avoid getting killed when we wake them up.”
“WHAT?” Ron screamed. “What do you mean?”
Melody stomped her foot in frustration. “Damn it Weasley, can’t you keep your fucking trap shut for two fucking minutes?”
Ron’s eyes widened but he wasn’t deterred. “What happened to them?”
“Magical influx.” She shrugged her shoulders. “It happens sometimes.”
“What?” Ron asked, confused. Harry and Ginny remained silent. They knew exactly what it meant. Melody had explained what excess power did to a person.
“It’s a medical term, Mr. Weasley,” Alex said softly. “They had a fight and their magic responded. Luckily we were all here to take the backlash. They’ll be fine but you might want to duck and cover when we wake them up.”
“Why?” Ron asked softly.
“Oh, you’ll see here in just a sec,” Melody said. “Potter, Miss Weasley, can you take Mr. Weasley to the very back of the classroom and erect the strongest shield you can manage please?” They nodded and she waved her hand to remove their binds. They grabbed a protesting Ron and pulled him to the back of the classroom, shielding him as best they could.
“Alright, who wants ground zero?” Melody asked softly.
“We’ll take it. We’re a bit better built for this than you are,” Celeste said softly, referring to their vampire characteristics.
Melody nodded. “Well Alex, care to join me?”
He nodded and then trotted with her to the middle of the classroom, throwing a shield up just behind Severus and Celeste. “You’ll not want to touch them,” he said and Severus nodded.
He and Celeste stepped back a few feet to the side and took a deep breath. Snape gently levitated Draco’s hand into the air. Celeste levitated Hermione’s hand and they had them touch in midair. They cancelled the spell immediately and threw up a strong shield. The couple flared even brighter than before and was lifted off the ground from the force of it. The wave of magic smashed through Severus and Celeste’s shield, knocking them into Alex and Melody’s shield. Their shield faltered a moment before it slowly crumbled. Alex had stepped behind Melody to absorb the force of the blow as they were thrown backwards. The wave of magic hit Harry and Ginny’s shield and shook, finally blinking out just as their shield dropped. All three students were thrown into the wall.
Alex got up and shook himself off, jogging over to the couple and reviving them. They blinked their eyes slowly and squinted up at the worried vampire. “Welcome back.”
“How bad?” Hermione scratched out.
“Well, the school is still in one piece,” Alex offered.
“Shite,” Draco breathed and tried to get up, only to groan and lay back down.
“I wouldn’t suggest moving too quickly. The shields held but you’ll both be pretty sore for a while.”
“Where is everyone?” Hermione whispered, groaning softly when she tried to raise her head to look around.
“Unconscious except for your friends. They took a hard hit but they’ll all be alright. It takes a lot more than that to hurt them.” He gave a crooked grin. Then he flashed over to Snape and Celeste and revived them. He walked over to Melody who groaned a bit and blinked.
“Did we live?” She asked.
“Yep. It’s pretty damned hard to kill you,” he said softly. She chuckled and groaned again as she hauled herself off the floor. He walked over to the three dazed students. “Are you alright?”
“Think so,” Ginny said, rising to her feet. “That was some reaction.” She gingerly helped Harry off the floor. They both hauled a pale and terrified Ron to his feet.
“Bloody hell,” he squeaked.
“Hey you two,” Melody said, kneeling by Severus and Celeste who were trying to get their heads to quit spinning. “Do you need something to help you out or can you bounce back?” She obviously meant blood and made a point of glancing at her wrist before she looked back at them.
“We’ll be fine, thank you,” Celeste said softly. Severus nodded his head in agreement.
“Good,” Melody said before walking over to the couple on the floor. Alex had gone back over to cast a few pain relieving spells so they could move. “Morning sleepy heads. Perhaps you’ll take my warning to heart now?”
They both gave a painful nod and sat up. Melody and Alex helped them up and into chairs. “You’re both lucky,” Alex said. “Just a couple of concussions. I don’t recommend doing that again though.”
“It was an accident,” Draco said, rubbing the back of his head. “Trust me, I didn’t plan on it.”
Snape walked stiffly over to them, Celeste trailing him. He summoned a few bottles of the same pain potion he’d given them before the holidays and directed them to drink them. “I believe that we need to have a discussion on self-control. Mr. Malfoy, you will direct yourself to my office and begin your lines. Miss Granger will be joining you shortly.”
Draco nodded and gingerly walked from the room, happy to have an excuse to leave. He made sure his connection with his wife was still open. ‘Are you alright love?’
‘I’ll be fine. I just hope Melody can explain our way out of this.’
‘We can only hope. See you in a minute.’
When Draco shut the door, a very pale Ron rounded on her. “What gives Mione?”
“What do you mean Ron?” Hermione asked tiredly. Even with the extra strength pain potion, her head was still hurting.
“What was that? You threw Malfoy through the door!” Ron asked wide eyed.
“Actually Mr. Weasley, I’m afraid that was us,” Melody said, saving Hermione from any further explanations. “Magical influx happens when your emotions overpower your magical control. When we saw it happen, we reacted and threw up shields. We got a bit carried away. I’m so sorry Miss Granger.”
“It’s okay. I understand,” Hermione said. “I’m sorry I got so upset.”
“It’s understandable,” Melody chuckled. “He’s very good at being a jerk. I can see why you’d be so angry with him. So, how are you feeling right now?”
“Woozy,” she said honestly.
“Hmm. Sit there a minute and see if it gets any better. If not, I’ll have Alex carry you into the office and give you a thorough examination.”
“You’re going to lock her in a room with a vampire?” Ron squeaked.
“Oh give it a rest Weasley,” Melody snapped. “Alex wouldn’t harm her. He’s a doctor for fucks sake.”
“A doctor?” Ron asked in confusion.
“Yes. A doctor, a muggle healer? Actually, he’s been trained both ways.”
“Why? Better hunting?” Ron asked in confusion.
Alex huffed. “I wasn’t always a vampire Mr. Weasley. In fact, it is a recent development. I was a first responder at the scene of a car wreck and one of the victims was a vampire. She latched on to me after I revived her but decided to gift me with vampirism in her gratitude for trying to heal her.”
“Oh,” Ron said. “But you could still bite her.”
“Actually, I couldn’t even if I wanted to Mr. Weasley. I’m afraid she’s not to my tastes.”
“Treacle tart with clotted cream,” Hermione said dreamily.
“Pardon?” Alex asked.
“I taste like treacle tart with clotted cream,” she said, the pain potion making her a bit loopy.
Alex laughed. “Well, everyone does taste different. Even the same person will taste different to two different vampires.”
“Lime cordial, my favorite,” she said, thinking about how Draco tasted.
Alex cocked his head and Melody whispered what happened into his ear. “Ah, I see. I believe you have a rare sensitivity to pain potions Miss Granger. How about we take a walk into the professor’s office?”
“I don’t want to walk,” she pouted.
“Would you like me to carry you?” Alex asked in amusement.
“No. I want to stay here and watch,” Hermione stated softly.
“Miss Granger, you still have detention to serve,” Snape drawled. “The only reason you are here is to show Mr. Weasley your form. Although, given recent events, I’m not sure that is a prudent idea.”
“But she promised,” Ron pouted.
“Oh fine!” She yelled and jumped up, swaying slightly. Alex moved to steady her and she shrugged him off. “Just…don’t let me fall,” she said softly before she jumped in the air and morphed into her hummingbird form. She and Harry had discussed it in length and decided that this form would be most useful on the run. It would make sense to show it above the other two.
“Blimey!” Ron exclaimed. “That’s brilliant! Wait, it was her the other day with Roman. No wonder she likes that bloody bird so much.”
The tiny red hummingbird flew unsteadily a few feet until she spun in a circle and started falling. Alex caught her gently and set her on the floor. She transformed back and held her head with her hands. “Ow, ow, ow!”
“Come on Miss Granger,” Alex said softly. “Let’s get you into that office so I can have a look at you.”
“Only he’s allowed to do that,” she snapped, her mind foggy.
“Well I’m sure he’ll oblige you but as your doctor, I need to make sure you didn’t knock something loose.”
“Just read the runes,” she said as she stumbled out the door.
Alex turned back around. “Where is the hospital wing? I’m going to need a few potions for this one I think. She’s delirious.” He had simultaneously covered for her snafu and drove home that she was ill in one sentence.
“Actually, I should have everything you should need in my office,” Snape said, rising from his spot behind the desk. “I’ll take you there now. Professor Bach,” he said, eyeing the students. Harry and Ginny were deeply concerned and Ron was bewildered. “Try to keep them in one piece.” He turned and stormed out, Celeste hot on his heels.
“Satisfied Mr. Weasley?” Melody griped.
“I didn’t think it would hurt her,” Ron said softly.
“She’s got a concussion. Of course morphing would hurt her. Don’t expect her back in the tower until Monday. She’ll be under 24 hour watch and then she’ll be monitored closely the rest of the weekend for residual flaring.”
“Does that have anything to do with her and Malfoy being sick?” Ron asked, earning an elbow from Ginny.
“Mr. Weasley, has it ever occurred to you that I could be the enemy and you just gave me a valuable piece of information?”
Ron paled. “Oh no.”
“Exactly. I’m afraid you’ll need to take a vow of silence before we go any further.”
“Alright,” Ron said shakily, not even thinking twice. He took the vow in short order.
“Great. You might want to brush up on your occlumency skills too,” Melody said thoughtfully. “Now, let’s get started. I know you’re all anxious to find your forms.”

Alex had ended up carrying Hermione to Snape’s office. She’d been too dizzy to reach it on her own. He sat her down gently in her husband’s lap. They flared softly the moment they touched and she sighed into Draco’s shoulder.
“Feel better?” Alex asked softly and she moaned as she nodded. “So he tastes like lime cordial does he?”
“Yes. Oh no! I can’t believe I said that,” Hermione moaned, remembering what had come out of her mouth.
Alex snickered. “Well, they think you’re delirious. No harm done.”
“You hope anyway,” Hermione grimaced. “Wait, why am I not to your tastes?”
“Because you are bound to another,” Alex said. “Bound people taste like shit.”
Draco eyed his godfather. “Did we really taste that bad?”
“It wasn’t pleasant,” Snape said, wrinkling his nose. “Miss Weasley, on the other hand, tasted like beef wellington.”
“So tasting like food is normal?” Draco asked.
“Yes.” Alex said. “Although the bloodlust is its own trigger, the taste is what makes it almost impossible to stop even after you’re sated.”
“You managed to do it,” Celeste said softly.
“I wasn’t all that interested in food in my life.” Alex shrugged. “Not that it wasn’t hard to control, but it made it easier to stop. Melody was probably the most difficult. She tastes like cherry cobbler and vanilla ice cream, my one vice.”
Snape laughed. “Well, that proves that the same people taste differently to different vampires. I thought she tasted a bit like a chocolate truffle.”
“Will everyone taste good?” Draco asked in bewilderment.
“I should think not,” Snape said. “You taste good to each other because you are bound to one another. I imagine everyone else will just taste like blood, coppery or metallic I’m told.”
“What does Celeste taste like then?” Alex asked with a gleam in his eye.
Snape frowned. “I wouldn’t know. I don’t make it a habit of consuming blood.”
“Pity,” Alex said. “Makes it that much hotter.”
Celeste turned beet red. “That’s enough.”
“Oh all right,” Alex sighed and flicked his wand, running diagnostics over Draco and Hermione. “It’s just a concussion. I imagine all that nonsense earlier was from the pain potion. What the hell did you put in it anyway?”
Snape smirked. “It’s a derivative of the standard potion, designed to increase the pain relief with fewer side effects. In Hermione’s case, it still doesn’t quite work but it’s better than the original.”
“Merlin what does she act like on the standard potion?” Alex asked in astonishment.
Draco barked a laugh. “She’s a loon, puts Peeves to shame she does.”
Hermione moaned in mortification. “It’s like it takes away my inhibitions.”
“Well, you might want to look into creating a potion that is tailor made to her,” Alex told Severus. “They’ll only get more beat up from here. Melody was going easy today.”
“That was easy?” Draco wheezed.
“Oh yes,” Snape said softly. “At her best, she can very nearly beat me. The only reason she can’t is that I am too fast for her to catch.”
“Then how did she get caught by those muggles in the first place?” Draco asked.
“A lead pipe to the back of the head does wonders for subduing your opponent,” Alex growled. “After that, well, how can you effectively fight what you can’t see? She didn’t take it sitting down, that’s for sure. She’s actually killed more than one of those men with a well-placed punch. That’s how they learned to attack in numbers. She’s only got four limbs.”
“How did they stay secret for so long then?” Hermione asked in bewilderment.
Alex smiled grimly. “She had help hiding the carnage. As for how, word didn’t spread that quickly. Americans tend to be a bit jaded. Any wild story is given about as much merit as the tooth fairy. Still, there are those who join just as an excuse to beat up helpless women. When they did manage to get something from Harmony, it only enhanced the greed.”
“I hope those muggles had fatal accidents,” Draco growled.
“Well, they won’t have full use of their bodies ever again,” Alex said. “In fact, I’d say they’ll have a grand time spending the rest of their lives drooling in a home for the mentally handicapped, a very ill reputable one.”
“That’s horrible!” Hermione gasped.
“I beg to differ,” Snape said softly. “Miss Granger, their associates all died or disappeared and they were still willing to go back. You need to open your eyes and see the big picture. Death Eaters will be no different. If you aren’t going to kill them then you need to incapacitate them badly enough that they can’t come back to fight you. That is the reason Dolohov is still lurking about. He won’t hesitate to attack you again.”
“It will be different next time,” Hermione said softly. “But won’t we need to be careful? If we were to take someone out like that…”
“Yes, you’ll need to subdue your efforts. I’d say that you’ll need to keep it under wraps until the final battle. Then, all bets are off, to coin a muggle phrase.”
“Will we really be able to shield the entire castle?” She asked.
“And more,” Snape whispered. “The problem is that it requires extreme concentration to execute and focus to maintain, two things that are hardly in abundance during a fight. You’ll more than likely have to relegate your powers to protecting individual groups rather than the whole. After all, Potter still needs the Dark Lord to think he’s won if he’s to walk to his doom.”
“This had better work,” Hermione said, a tear trailing down her face.
“Faith Miss Granger,” Alex said softly. “Faith.”

“How are the heads?” Alex asked merrily as Hermione and Draco trudged into the DADA classroom at 6:30 the following Monday morning.
“If they had more sleep, they’d be better,” Draco growled. “Why exactly are we here so early?”
“Training of course,” Melody said, grabbing her metal case from behind Snape’s desk and plopping it on top. Alex came over and ran diagnostics. Nodding his head in approval, he sat back down in the corner.
“How are dolls going to help us train?” Draco asked. “We’ve already mastered intent.”
“These are not just intent dolls,” Melody scoffed. “They do so much more. They take concentration which is what you need to work on most, is it not?”
“My concentration is just fine,” he sniffed.
“Really?” Melody drawled and cast a few spells over the dolls. “Let’s see then.”
The couple shrugged and morphed the dolls to look as they did at that moment. Then they had them leap off the desk and take a bow. They went into a waltz for a few minutes and then bowed again.
“Very nice,” Melody said. “No, do it while you’re dancing with each other.”
“What?” Hermione asked.
“You heard. You dance with Draco, and you make the dolls do the same movements. You’ll need to concentrate on both the dolls and not stepping all over each other. Begin,” she said as she flicked her hand and the wireless popped on.
It was a simple waltz and Draco hesitantly took Hermione in his arms, making sure to concentrate on the doll mimicking him. They had a few false starts but they managed to make them flow smoothly. Their dancing was a bit stilted.
“Now, don’t stop while I’m speaking,” Melody said, smirking when they missed and stumbled a bit. “I want you to continue dancing until both you and your dolls look flawless enough to compete in a contest. Before you ask, the purpose of this exercise is to maintain two conscious levels of concentration at the same time. Also, the dancing will take the place of your normal workouts in the mornings. We’ll do this for as long as it takes because you need two conscious levels on top of the one your mind already contains. One is reserved for your thoughts, one for the other’s thoughts, and one for your actions to the surrounding world.
“After you’ve mastered this, you are going to switch dolls through your conscious minds. This will help you when navigating in a fight. If you can flawlessly meld your conscious thoughts together, then you can fight more efficiently and shield more people while protecting yourselves. It looks like fun now but you’re going to hate dolls, dancing, and probably me after this.”
Two hours later, two very tired students were just about tripping over themselves trying to dance a simple two step. About half an hour into their workout, they’d discarded their robes. Hermione had stripped down to her bra and underwear and transfigured them into a sports bra and boy shorts. Draco had yanked off his tie and both his shirts. They’d even taken off their jewelry, the sweat getting underneath them and chafing.
They’d made good progress though. Despite their extreme fatigue, their dolls remained steadily dancing. Melody looked at her watch and flicked the music off. The couple fell against each other in relief. “That was very nice for a first time. We’ll be doing this every morning until you can operate those dolls whether you’re sleeping or in a heated duel. You’ll also come in during lunch to work on legilimency techniques and after classes to work on occlumency with the professor. Detention tonight will be spent in research and then Sev and I will start working on long distance lending.”
“And when are we going to do homework or sleep?” Hermione sighed tiredly.
“Homework will have to be done while you’re researching and you can sleep when you’re dead,” Melody quipped. Draco and Hermione blinked at her owlishly. “How much longer until Easter break?”
“Seven weeks,” Draco said softly.
“And how much do we have to accomplish by then?” Melody asked softly.
“Too much,” Hermione sighed. “I don’t know if we can do this.”
“You can and you will. If anyone on this entire planet can do it, you two can. After you get the dolls down, which I don’t think will take you that long really, we’re going to work some more on your combat training. You’ll also move on to blocking senses in tandem after you’ve mastered your mind connection. Trust me, it’s a lot but it isn’t impossible. Keep fighting and you’ll get it.”
“People will be suspicious,” Draco said.
“They will, which is why you need to approach Zabini and Nott today. I have a batch polyjuice potion brewing but Sev has a few bottles in store already. You can run your first test after class. I’ll make up an excuse. One sip and Crabbe will turn for all of five minutes but it’s enough to tell. After all, he downed it a lot at the first of school. He won’t think twice now.”
Draco nodded. He’d used Crabbe and Goyle as look outs while he’d tried to work on that cabinet, the cabinet he hadn’t looked at in a month. “Shite!”
“What is it now?” Melody asked, packing the dolls away.
“I have to work on that fucking cabinet,” he growled. “Can we skip distance lending so I can go to the ROR tonight. I’ve got to at least show a bit of progress.”
“Sure, but just this once. Now, you’ve missed breakfast and class starts in fifteen minutes. You have two options. Number one, Sev’s office has a secret entrance into the classroom and one into his personal quarters. He’s granted you permission to shower in there and I can call Dobby to get you a quick bite to eat. Number two, you can scorgify yourselves, eat a slightly longer breakfast, and figure out how to shower in between classes because I’m not going to excuse you past your experiment.”
The couple debated for a few moments. They desperately wanted a shower so they decided to take option number one. When they walked through the entrance to Snape’s office, they had to bite back a gasp. They could hear a soft moan coming through the door to his quarters. Not wanting to interrupt anything, they loudly cleared their throats and knocked on the office door. “Professor?” Hermione called loudly. “Melody said we could use your quarters for a quick shower before class.”
“I can hear you just fine, child,” he said as he stalked through the door. To their relief he was fully dressed. He merely cocked an eyebrow and pointed them to his loo. They ran straight there, trying desperately not to look around. As they shut the door, they heard Snape chuckle and Celeste’s answering snicker.
They stripped quickly and hopped in the shower together, regretting that they needed to be bathed, dressed, and fed in a mere quarter of an hour. It was only when they emerged from the shower that they realized their grave mistake. Most of their clothing was still back in the classroom and the items they’d had on had disappeared, all except for their shoes.
“Damn it!” Draco hissed. “Godfather?” He called as he cracked the door. “We seem to have a problem.”
“Actually, you’re very lucky. Melody managed to snatch your clothing before the first student walked in this morning. I’m sure you know her, Miss Parkinson,” Snape drawled and smirked when he heard muttered curses. “However, Dobby has seemed to tune himself into your needs. A new set of clothes arrived as soon as you two stepped into the shower. Your jewelry is in here in the office with your breakfast.” He handed two sets of neatly pressed uniforms through the crack in the door. “Hurry.”
They skidded into class with one minute to spare; both of them had soaking wet hair that hung in their faces, especially on the right side of their faces. It seemed that the sticking charm was no match for two hours’ worth of dancing and a shower. It hadn’t completely washed away but they’d need to make a mad dash for some makeup after class. They were earning some very strange looks from their fellow classmates. What kind of excuse would they have for this?
Snape came bursting into class, Celeste padding after him obediently. Melody sat at his desk reading a magazine, looking as if she didn’t have a care in the world. Alex was nowhere to be found. Snape crossed his arms and glared at Melody for a few moments until she sighed heavily and put the magazine away.
“Very well,” she said softly and slammed the golden barrette down on the desk before she stormed to the front of the class. The class gasped as Snape viciously set fire to the little golden hair accessory. “That was a bit dramatic, don’t you think Professor?”
“No.”
“Whatever. Now, if any of you had bothered to come to class early, you would have all been the victims of my next lesson. As it is, I did catch two of you. Malfoy, Granger, well done. You both made it to the showers and back in ten minutes. That’s got to be some sort of record. Anyway, since you’ve already experienced the lesson, I want you to run an errand for me. It’ll take both of you.”
She motioned them up to the front of the class and gave them each a piece of paper and instructed them to deliver them to McGonagall and Dumbledore and then subtly pointed out the little Celtic knot on the papers. She continued on as they walked out of class. “Now, today we’re going to be working with the dolls again…”
They could hear groans sounding out across the class as they shut the door. They sprinted behind an alcove and placed their wrists on the papers. “Gryffindor’s rule!” They said together and watched as words formed on the paper.
“She could at least change the phrase,” Draco growled.
Hermione laughed. “But then she couldn’t get a little jab in on you. What does this say?”
“I think they are two halves of the same note,” Draco said and bound the notes together.
Hey kiddos,
Sev sent word that your beauty marks were showing. Best go touch those up right now. You really did well this morning. Take this time to get a cup of coffee down you because this is going to be a very long day.
Take care
Draco quickly rolled up the notes. “Well, let’s get our faces taken care of and then we can grab that cup of coffee, I don’t think she meant for us to be gone that long.”
Hermione nodded and they looked around, making sure no one was watching. They transformed into birds and flew to the tower. Even if they had an excuse to be out of class, it wouldn’t do for anyone to see them together. As birds, no one seemed to take notice. Not many people looked up except for in the Great Hall. They put their makeup on in quick order and Draco made them two cups of coffee. They sipped them slowly as they headed back to class, making sure to cast sensing charms in every direction. They figured that it was worth the risk since their marks were covered now. He cast a drying charm on their hair and then cast another one to make her riotous curls fall in soft shiny waves. She smiled and nodded her thanks. “How do you know all these hair charms?”
“You learn a few things when your mum is obsessed with being perfectly coifed in public.” He shrugged.
“Do you miss her?” She asked quietly. His mother had made Snape put a few memories of a fight with Draco in her head to keep her away.
“More than I can say. But she’ll remember everything soon enough.” He looked over and gave her a sad smile. “Yours will be back before you know it.”
She nodded. “It’s one of the things that keep me going.”
“Anything else on that list?” He asked slyly.
“My boyfriend,” she said quickly. “He’s amazing, a muggle you know. I love his tattoos and his tight white t-shirts and his amazingly tight denims.”
“Sounds like a ponce,” Draco smirked.
“He can be,” she said, nudging him a bit. “What’s on your list?”
“My family,” he said firmly. “Mother, godfather, my future wife…and children.”
“Children?” She breathed out.
“Not right away,” he clarified. “Someday though, when this war is over and we graduate. I’d like to travel a bit, just me and her.” His eyes glittered in joy when he looked at her. “Then we can both have a career and eventually, children. I want at least two but as long as we have one healthy child, I’ll be more than happy.”
“It’s a lovely plan,” She sighed softly. “I hope it comes true.”
They rounded the corner that lead to the DADA classroom. Gulping the last few dregs of coffee, they vanished their cups and knocked on the door.
“Enter!” Melody chirped.
When they walked in, it took everything they had not to burst out laughing. Ron and Pansy were standing at the front of the class beside their dolls. They were barely touching fingertips and trying to sway with a very slow rumba. Their dolls were wavering back and forth with their waning concentration.
Finally, Pansy let out a screech. “This is impossible. I can’t take it anymore!” She stomped back to her desk and sat down in a huff. Ron wiped his hands on his pants and shot her a disgusted look before he walked back to his seat. Melody had turned around to hide her grin and Snape wore a very tiny smirk as he leaned up against the wall in the back of the classroom.
“It’s not impossible, Miss Parkinson,” Melody said in a low voice. “You’re just not capable of concentrating on anything other than your feelings.”
“How in the world am I supposed to dance with that oaf and work a doll at the same time?” She pouted. “It’s hard enough without moving. Trying to do it at the same time is impossible.”
“It is not impossible. Malfoy, Granger, you’ve arrived just in time. None of your classmates can seem to get past their feelings for one another to concentrate on the exercise. Would you care to demonstrate that it is possible?”
“I’ve just showered,” Draco sneered.
“You can shower again after class, both of you,” Melody said tersely. “For now, ignore the fact that you can’t stand each other and complete the assignment.”
“Fine.” He roughly grabbed Hermione’s hand and yanked her to the front of the classroom. Their dolls jumped to attention and morphed into themselves as they were, in there school uniforms. They took up a traditional stance and jumped as ‘Unchained Melody’ started playing. They sighed heavily and spun into a slow waltz. Their dolls never faltered once as the class watched with gaping mouths.
It was extremely hard not to look into his wife’s beautiful golden eyes as they danced. Instead, he set his face in a grimace and looked over her shoulder, pretending to make sure his doll didn’t get off beat. Fed up, he settled for speaking with her through his thoughts. ‘Won’t it be nice when we can do this without looking like we’d rather throw up?’
‘I think I’d settle for being in the same room without the glares. I’m not sure what I’ll do when I can sit in your lap anytime I want.’
Draco bit back a smirk and ended the song in a beautiful dip. He snapped her back up and they jumped apart like they’d been burned. Hermione brushed off her robes and ran to her seat. He looked at his hands and rubbed them on his pants before he trudged back to his seat. The class gaped for a moment until Melody drew their attention.
“There, see? Two members of the opposite sex in rival houses with a less than pleasant past and they were able to concentrate on their dolls. Suck it up people! Next, Bulstrode and Potter.”
“Easy for you to say. They had a waltz,” Pansy grimaced.
“Your point Miss Parkinson?” Melody snapped.
“Well a waltz is easy isn’t it?” She hissed.
“So is a rumba,” Melody said slowly. “You believe it impossible to do more than move around in circles?”
“Yes!” She growled.
“Very well, Potter and Bulstrode, come up here and choose a song at random. Make it a fast one,” she said, her eyes narrowing as stalked back to Snape. They had a very terse and heated conversation before he shook his head no. “Chicken. Are you such a coward that you’re scared of what a few teenagers think? Will dancing make you a ninny in their eyes?” She hissed. No one else but Hermione and Draco heard it.
“If this got back to him,” he started.
“Then it does. Teaching your class doesn’t make you any less of a man. Besides, I know you Sev. You are a very masculine dancer and one hell of a lead. You make it look effortless and it will shut that fucking twat up. I’m going to hex her into the next century and blame it on you if you don’t.”
“You owe me,” he hissed.
“Yes, I figured becoming your slave would pay you back nicely,” she said dejectedly. “I’ll be completely at your mercy come Easter you know.”
Snape pinched the bridge of his nose in exasperation. “Very well.”
“Thank you,” she whispered as she turned back around. Snape followed resignedly. “Now, Professor Snape and I will show you that it is entirely possible to do this. Potter, what’s the song?”
“I think it’s a fast one. They’re all in Spanish,” he said, holding one out.
“Ah, yes it’s fast. Thank you Potter.” She levitated the gramophone over to play it. She and Snape stood their dolls up and changed them into their replicas. The music started with a fast heavy pulse and Snape stood in a rigid pose. “If you don’t relax Sev, I’m going to dance like we’re at the club.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Try me,” she said in a deadly tone.
He could see her eyes spark in fire behind her ever present sunglasses and sighed. He relaxed a bit and took a firmer hold. Suddenly, he turned her out and back and led her into a salsa. A few sparks flew from her fingertips and she smiled wickedly. He remained stoic as he led her through some rather complicated steps. She swayed her hips a bit in a spin and he growled lowly. Draco heard her challenge him right before he picked her up and spun her around.
Suddenly, sighs sounded out throughout the room. All the females and even most of the males were staring at Snape like he was a giant package of candy floss. Hermione realized that Melody had challenged him to be himself and that meant that his thrall was in full force. She smirked when she realized how brilliant that idea was. When he cut it off, they’d be horrified that they drooled over their teacher and vow never to speak about it.
The dance continued and their dolls followed in precision movements along with them. They still looked every bit as wonderful as they had on that dance floor at Fangs and Thangs. Hermione sighed and revisited her memories of that place. Draco had held her close and looked at her like she was the only woman in the room. It had been so wonderful not to have to worry about being found out.
Before she realized it, the dance ended and Snape had dipped Melody so low that her head almost hit the floor. Then he lifted her back up, spun her out, and stalked to the side of the classroom to take up his old position. Celeste rubbed up against him and let out a small howling bark. He looked down at her and smirked before his mask settled back into place.
“Now then,” Melody said, smoothing down her hair. “It can be done. Potter, Bulstrode, take your dolls.”
No one else managed to complete the assignment so Melody assigned two feet of parchment on how concentration affects spells. Draco had Crabbe stay behind to take the polyjuice potion under Melody’s watchful eye. It worked flawlessly. He looked himself over, making sure that no tattoos or stray hair colors showed up in his new clone. Five minutes later, Crabbe changed back.
“Why was I you Draco?” He asked confused.
Draco looked at him a second and raised his wand. “Obliviate.” Crabbe stumbled out the door to his next class, thinking he’d just been staring at the new professor for a few minutes.
“I’d say it was a successful test,” Melody said, nodding her head in approval. “You will let your wife know?”
He smiled. “She already does.”
It took him a few hours to get Nott and Zabini alone. He weaved a tale about how he had hit a snag in his project for the Dark Lord and had no time for Pansy busting his bollocks. He explained that he wanted them to transform into him at night and feed her a bunch of lines about how he was busy but he still wanted her.
“Well mate, you must not want her that bad if you want us to be you,” Zabini said with narrowed eyes.
“Of course I don’t want her,” Draco snorted.
Nott cocked his head. “So if I could convince her to dump your sorry arse…”
“I’d owe you.” Draco shrugged. “I don’t have time for her leeching onto me.”
“But you have time to drag Granger all over the DADA classroom before breakfast,” Zabini snickered.
Draco made a disgusted face. “I didn’t really have a choice. Bach not so subtly hinted that I’d get detention if I didn’t. I can’t afford to lose the time.”
“Uh huh,” Nott said, his arms crossed. “You know, judging from the way she made that doll move that first time, I’d say she’s got some moves.”
Draco snorted, trying desperately not to react. “She didn’t step on my feet; that’s about all I can say.”
“Oh come on Draco. She might be a mudblood but she’s still got a pussy. Can’t you imagine her wrapping those long legs around you?” Zabini teased.
“That’s disgusting,” Draco grimaced. “She’s tainted.”
Nott chuckled. “Tainted or not, that girl is probably a firecracker between the sheets. I wouldn’t mind getting some of that.”
“You just worry about getting Pansy out of my hair and I’ll put a good word in for you,” Draco said, his hands clenched into fists in his robes pockets. If Nott tried something with Hermione, he’d kill him.
“Sure thing Draco. Maybe I can convince her to tup me sometime,” Nott replied.
“You do that,” Draco said softly and watched as Nott walked off.
“You might fool him with that disgusted act Drake, but I can see through it,” Blaise said softly. Draco fingered his wand. “Before you decide to obliviate me, I’ll make you a deal.”
Draco took out his wand and leaned against the wall of the abandoned classroom they were in. He crossed his arms and quirked an eyebrow. “I’m listening.”
Blaise eyed his wand for a few moments. He knew that Draco was not someone to fuck with. He’d been there several times during Lucius’s “lessons” and had seen what Draco could do. “I’ll help Nott out with Pansy.”
“Wonderful,” Draco drawled. “Get on with it.”
Blaise gulped as he saw Draco’s wand twitch. “What have you got going on with Granger, Drake?”
“Nothing.” Draco shrugged his shoulders and let his wand drop towards the nervous black boy. It was now aimed right between his hazel eyes.
“You’re lying,” Blaise said boldly and fidgeted a bit as Draco’s eyes narrowed. “Whatever is going on, it’s got to have gotten you into their good graces though. I don’t blame you, putting your eggs into both baskets.” He paused and nodded to himself when he saw Draco’s face soften just bit. “I want a good word in with them too. I’ll exchange my silence on whatever I happen to see if you’ll negotiate my innocence to the winner.”
“What if I just take your memories?” Draco drawled.
Blaise gave a grim smile. “You’ve slipped more than you can imagine Drake. Your hands ball into fists whenever someone mentions something bad about Granger. You stare at her with hot eyes when she walks into a room. Hell, even the new professor is putting you two together. You can’t take every tell away Drake.”
Draco took a deep breath. He didn’t realize he’d been quite that obvious. He’d have to be much more careful. Not everyone in Slytherin was as observant as Blaise but enough clues and others would start to notice. He rubbed his lips in consideration. Harmony had said that he could have a strong alliance if he was careful with his words.
“Am I to take it that you aren’t confident the Dark Lord will win?”
Blaise smirked, realizing that Draco was considering it. “Drake, it’s been six years. The Dark Lord has been here in some form or another and Potter’s managed to hold him off every time. It doesn’t exactly instill confidence.”
“If the Dark Lord were to hear your doubts, he’d kill you,” Draco said in a deadly tone.
“If he were to hear that you were more interested in someone with a less than stellar pedigree instead of the gift he’d promised you, he’d kill you too.”
Draco smirked. “Yes well, he won’t hear that, will he?”
“You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” Blaise shrugged.
“You know I could put you in St. Mungo’s and no one would ever know,” Draco drawled, uncrossing his arms and trailing his fingers down his wand.
“You need an ally Drake. Not even Bach can save your arse all the time.”
“Who said she’s saving my arse?” Draco snapped.
“She covered for you both this morning, walking in with wet hair at the same time. Showering after touching each other indeed,” Blaise snorted.
“Actually, we both had just showered.” Draco smirked a bit.
“I’m sure you had a grand time,” Blaise purred. “What’s Bach got in helping you out?”
“Haven’t you heard? She’s Snape’s lover. He’s my godfather. She’s doing her duty.”
“She’s not Snape’s lover. She’s too gaga over that vampire.”
Draco shook his head. “She’s his lover. Period.”
“Whatever you say Drake. My silence and help for my freedom, what say you?” Blaise asked softly.
“You’ll fight on whatever side I want you to Zabini, or say goodbye to your memories. All of them.” Draco said in a deadly tone.
“What side is that going to be Drake?”
“I’ve grown rather tired of people dictating my life for me Blaise. On which side do you think I have a better chance of that happening?”
“I hope your skills are up to par Drake, because if he ever finds out, you’ll be dead before you can take a breath to explain,” Zabini whispered.
“Oh I doubt that,” Draco drawled. “I want an oath Zabini. Your help and silence for my influence.”
“Done.”
