The faint strains of music from the kitchen radio drew a wry smile from the exhausted Lyra as Sirius held his hand out to her. She knew the song in an instant, for it was the one they had danced to on their wedding night what seemed like a lifetime ago. “Are you kidding, Sirius?” she said, though her smile widened as his fingers threaded through hers.
“Not in the least,” he said, one dark brow lifted teasingly, though his eyes softened when they came to rest upon the shape of their baby kicking away inside her. “I want to dance with you, Lyra.”
“You really think I can dance with this?” she said with a loud laugh as she heaved herself out of the chair despite her protests. “Sirius, no matter what you say I have all the grace of a mountain troll right now.”
“And all the beauty of a Veela, sweetheart. I’ve never seen you look lovelier than you do now, and I want to dance with my beautiful wife.”
Lyra’s heart sang with his artless, sincere words, and she saw nothing but him as he turned her on the point of his finger to face outwards, leaning against his broad chest as they swayed in time to the music. It struck her then, as the spring sunshine shone defiantly through the grime of the narrow window, that everything they endured was worth it for these few precious moments, simple though they might seem to anyone else. Sirius’s free hand rested against their baby, and he sang quietly along to the tune, crooning out promises of a love and future that was embodied by all that was beneath his hand.
Tears of joy shone in her eyes, but then without warning a fierce cramp ripped through her abdomen that took her breath away. She drew a sharp breath and pushed back against her husband, clutching at the chair in front of her for support as the tide of pain slowly receded.
Sirius whitened. “You okay, sweetheart?” he said slowly.
Lyra swallowed hard, her fingers still tight against the wooden chair as she felt a rush of warmth between her legs that could only signify one thing. “I’m fine,” she said, staring down at the floor as her waters pooled. “But I think we’re about to have a baby, Sirius.”
“Oh, Merlin!” His composure rapidly slipping away, he broke for the fireplace and snatched up a handful of Floo powder. “Who do you want to go with you?”
“What do you mean?”
“To the hospital, Lyra! Most of the Order are here, so just say who you want -”
Sirius trailed off abruptly, for she was furiously shaking her head from side to side. “Sirius, I’m not going to St. Mungo’s! I can’t do this without you, and there’s no way you can walk into the hospital. Like it or not, I’m having this baby right here, and right now.”
Even as she spoke another cramp began to build, and Lyra instinctively knew the baby intended to waste no further time in making its appearance. Her tolerance strained to its limits by the intense pain, she knocked the Floo powder out of Sirius’s hand with a loud, carrying groan that brought footsteps hurrying down the hall.
“Look, we haven’t got time to argue about this!” she said impatiently, seizing at his arm as his eyes darted anxiously from side to side. “Molly’s here, we can shout if we need her – but we made this baby together. We can deliver it together too. Sirius, I trust you! Can you Apparate us all upstairs?”
He drew a deep breath as half the Order burst through the door. “I swore a vow never to let you down, Lyra. Of course I can.”
“Sirius, Lyra!” Remus hurtled towards them, his wand outstretched. “Is everything okay?”
“Sure,” Sirius said with a wry grin. “Apparently we’re having a baby, Remus. Molly, can you get everything ready while I take Lyra upstairs? I don’t think this baby wants to wait much longer.”
As he spoke, Lyra doubled over and his smile slipped away. He clearly understood the wordless appeal on her pale face, for without needing to ask he took her into his arms, drew a deep breath and Apparated them both into the bedroom they shared.
The hours seemed to blur seamlessly into one, stretched out in a building crescendo of pain beyond anyone she had known before, but with Sirius at her side and the awareness that each contraction was one closer to meeting their child, she drew on a strength she never knew she had until finally, as the last rays of sunset bathed the bedroom in a brilliant amber glow, a shrill and mewling cry filled the room.
Lyra slumped back into the pillows, her eyes round with awe as Sirius straightened to his full height, a tiny bundle in his arms and the stunned elation on his taut face the perfect mirror of all she felt. “It’s a boy, Lyra,” he said softly, shaking his hair out of his face as he cocked his head to stare down at the clenched red fist now waving in the air in front of him. “Lyra, we have a son!”
She couldn’t speak past the lump of emotion that constricted her throat, overwhelmed by the force of the love now soaring through her veins. All she could do was hold out her trembling arms, her mute entreaty for their son one Sirius instantly understood. Gently lowering his head to deliver the tenderest of kisses to the black hair their son had inherited, he sat next to her on the bed and delivered the baby to her – and Lyra would have been content to stay locked in that moment forever, the bliss of cradling their firstborn son against her chest all she could ever need.
When the little boy had been fed and dressed, a gentle knock on the door drew Sirius towards it as Lyra carefully laid the baby in the waiting cradle next to their bed. As her husband opened the door, she caught a glimpse of Remus Lupin, his eyes wide in thrilled anticipation as he nervously peered into the room beyond. “We noticed it had gone quiet up here, Sirius. Is everything alright?”
“More than alright, old friend!” The two men silently embraced, and when they broke apart tears shone in Sirius’s eyes. “Remus, why don’t you bring everyone up to come and meet the Order’s newest member?”
The werewolf briefly clasped Sirius’s shoulder and then hastened back downstairs, leaving the three of them alone for a few more moments.
“You still like the name we chose?” Lyra said quietly, still bending over the cradle to touch their baby boy’s impossibly soft skin. He had fallen asleep in her arms and the transfer had not stirred him, his vivid blue eyes closed for now as he slumbered in peaceful oblivion of the turmoil outside the house they called home. “I think it suits him, Sirius.”
“No doubt about it. It’s perfect, just like our little boy.” He followed her across the room and drew her into his arms, covering her lips with his in a brief kiss that told her everything she needed to know about how he felt. Secure in all it offered, she leaned against him and allowed him to steer her back into their bed, lowering her exhausted body into the newly clean sheets that awaited her as footsteps drew near.
Sirius turned towards the door with their son in his arms as a quiet procession slowly streamed into the room, a dozen pairs of eyes wide with silent awe as they settled upon the tiny baby whose shock of black hair peeped out from beneath the knitted bonnet atop his head. Lyra’s heart was pounding fit to burst, consumed by the love she felt for the both of them as Sirius inclined his head.
“Guys, I’d like you all to meet our son,” he said softly, the pride that blazed in his voice no way lessened by the low tone of his words. “Leo James Black, seven pounds and three ounces of hope to hold onto.”
She exhaled, the name they had agreed upon from the very start a perfect fit for their precious son. A ripple of approval spread through the bedroom as it filled up, even the cragged, battle-scarred face of Alastor Moody softening as he gazed at Leo, still sleeping soundly in his father’s arms. The old house had never seemed so peaceful, and she nodded when she met Sirius’s questioning gaze. They shared a secret smile, no need for words any longer for the two of them to speak to each other.
He drew a deep breath, gently rocking Leo in his arms as the baby whimpered softly, then lifting his head again to speak out loud. “Remus, Molly – you’ll be Leo’s godparents?”
Their instant and delighted assents brought a fresh smile to Lyra’s face, and she propped herself up against her pillows as the enormity of all that had happened began to sunk in. “This is what we’re fighting for, isn’t it?” she said quietly. “Not just our little Leo, but every witch and wizard who can’t defend themselves against all Voldemort’s planning – and the Muggles too, come to that. For the sake of their futures, we have to sacrifice our today.”
Sirius came back to her side, settling Leo back into her arms before slipping his arm around her shoulder to hold them both close. “Yes,” he said simply, tears pooling in his grey eyes afresh as the rest of the Order silently nodded. “But it’s worth it, Lyra. For the sake of Leo and all the other children out there, we have a duty to stand firm no matter how much danger comes our way. I just hope that for the sake of this little one, sweetheart, we’re both still standing at his side come the end.”
