Living: Chapter 26
Hermione and Ginny were out taking a walk. They'd needed somewhere where they could talk privately without many ears listening to their conversation. Hermione needed to clear the air with Ginny and try to help smooth things over for Harry. Ginny still wasn't talking to Harry and Hermione felt like she was partly to blame. Her friends had got into an argument because she had stormed off to confront Severus. Even though she hadn't been there for the actual fight, she had seen the aftermath during class.
"I'm so sorry about last night Ginny. I shouldn't have left like that so upset and all." Hermione said.
"You're not going to take the blame for what happened." Ginny said as she reached up to brush some tears away from her cheeks. "I'm not blaming you at all, so don't go there."
"Please don't blame Harry for this. He's been just as upset as you and he's not sure how to make things right with you. I wish that you'd go talk to him." She tried pleading with her best girlfriend.
"Why do men have to be so pigheaded?" Ginny shouted out.
Hermione laughed. " I bet men would say that we are equally as stubborn as they are, but we carry grudges longer."
"Do you and Severus fight? It always looks like you're so lovey-dovey together." Ginny whispered looking around making sure there was no one around to hear her question.
Hermione could only laugh at first, "Of course we do; in fact all the time. But that doesn't mean we don't care about each other. Of course the make-up sex is wonderful too." Hermione said with a smile.
"That part you could have left off, "Ginny said grinning. "Just because I support you in this relationship, doesn't mean I want all of the details."
"I thought you wanted to know everything that Severus and I did together? After all, you lost your virginity many years before I did." Hermione teased her back.
"I want to hear even less you talking about losing your virginity, being that it was with my dough-head brother. What a way to spoil a nice walk. Here I thought we were friends." she said her mouth curved into a smile.
Ginny looked over to Hermione and they both burst into laughter. It was good to have something to laugh about, and so rare these days. Just when they thought it was safe to start enjoying life again after the war, and now there was this new threat of a new Dark Lord. Every one of them was at risk again.
"Patch things up with the clueless git. We all need to stick together and we don't need to be fighting amongst ourselves." Hermione said jokingly, but she was truly serious in what she said.
Ginny sighed and stopped walking, "All right you've convinced me. I'll make things better between me and Harry, if only for the make-up sex."
"Gods Ginny! You're incorrigible." Hermione snickered.
"I don't think I'm that bad," Ginny answered.
"Oh, yes you are, but I hope you never change." Hermione hugged her friend quickly as they headed back to the castle.
Harry and Ron sat in the Quidditch stands playing Exploding Snap.
"Explain to me again why we're out here doing this, instead of inside eating dinner?" Ron complained as Harry looked broodingly out across the Quidditch field.
Harry was beginning to regret bringing Ron with him, especially before the dinner hour. He should have known better and chosen someone else, but he'd wanted to escape the castle before he ran into Ginny. He was torn between running to her, falling on his knees and then begging for forgiveness, or ignoring her forever and finding someone new. At times being Ginny Weasley's boyfriend was too much work. He loved her, didn't he? After today he wasn't so sure and also didn't know whether it was worth it.
"Harry?" Ron said breaking his train of thought.
"Huh?" Harry turned his attention to his friend.
"I think I know what this is about." Ron looked at him thoughtfully.
"You do? Why don't you tell me?" Harry hadn't meant to sound snarky, but it came across that way anyhow.
Ron gave a fake laugh, "I'm not as dumb as I look."
Harry couldn't help but snort with laughter, "Go on I can't wait to hear."
"Mate, this has to do with my sister, right?" Ron threw down his Exploding Snap cards and leaned back crossing his arms.
Harry tried not to look so surprised but he was. He hadn't expected Ron to figure this out. Lately he hadn't been too observant with things right underneath his nose. So Ron guessing Harry's current bad mood was because of Ginny, said a lot about his old friend.
Harry nodded his head, "You're right. This all has to do with Ginny. I can't face her right now. I don't know what's wrong with me. I hate arguing with her or any girl. They always seem to be the ones that are right and I've done something wrong."
"Funny, but I understand what you're saying." Ron agreed. "Sometimes I'm not sure birds are worth it, and that includes my baby sister. But, if you do really love her, I would tell you to try and make things up with her. Weasley women are stubborn and the longer you let this go on, the harder it will be to make her happy again. My dad has learned this the hard way many times."
Harry looked at Ron and grinned, "You know mate, you've come a long way since our first year. That was probably the most mature thing I've ever heard you say."
"Oi Harry! You wound me," Ron said making a face, "I may not know a lot about some things, but I have learned how to handle my sister."
He stood and looked towards the castle. "I'm heading back to the find some food. You need to go find your girlfriend." Ron winked at his friend and ran down the stands and across the field.
Harry sat looking out at the Quidditch field. This was the place where he had so many memories, most of them good. He'd wished that this year would be the time to make more good memories, but instead, they were once again trying to deal with an evil Dark Lord and his minions. Now wasn't the time to give up or feel defeated. It also wasn't the time to be fighting amongst themselves, he needed to find Ginny and end this fight with her. He sat for a few more minutes enjoying watching the sun set as it fell behind the mountains. This was one simple thing that he was going to allow himself before he headed off to continue the battle.
Severus Snape sneered as he looked out over the Great Hall at the room full of teenagers gorging themselves eating rich food. It frankly disgusted him as none of them had a care in the world. They all thought the world was a happy place again, with no threats from Voldemort and the Death Eaters that had reigned their world in fear for many years. There wouldn't be so much frivolity if they knew about the new threat to the Wizarding World. Would they be sitting there with smiles on their faces if they knew about the new Dark Lord and his band of merry Death Eaters that were running freely around Hogwarts?
His eyes searched looking for anything that would signal something was off. This had been his life for so long…notice the small, subtle things that most people overlooked. He lifted his eyebrow as he observed that the key players of his "team" were nowhere to be found. The Gryffindor table was missing Hermione, Ginny, Harry and Ron. The last one surprised him the most, considering that eating food was a sport for Ron Weasley. Something must be up, and his mouth suddenly became dry hoping that the four missing teens were not in trouble.
Some of his fears were laid to rest as his eyes swept the Slytherin table where Theo Nott was glaring at anyone close enough to be within his breathing space. He noticed the young man kept glancing over to the Hufflepuff table where his lover was eating away and ignoring the simmering looks sent his way. At least those two buffoons weren't the cause of the other fours' current absence from dinner.
His eyes lit up when he saw Hermione and Ginny walk into the hall and sit down. Hermione's head tilted up as she glanced to the high table. Their eyes met only for a second, but long enough for Severus to know that everything was fine with her at least. Both girls started eating and chatting away giving Severus a chance to relax a bit.
The rattling of china being thrown off the table disrupted dinnertime. Theo's nostrils flared as he jumped up while the dishes flew through the air. The Slytherins screamed and leaped out of the way as a few swore at the Death Eater, while one boy even gave him the finger. Nothing fazed him as he rushed out in a fury. What was that all about? Justin turned his head watching Theo storm out and quickly got up to follow him. That was all Severus needed to excuse himself from the high table and leave out the back door. He was going to follow the two dimwits to see where they were going and if they were meeting up with someone. He knew this castle better than anyone else here, save a few of the other teachers. This could be his chance to find out who Theo and Justin were reporting to.
Hermione had been busily chatting with Ginny until she looked up and saw Severus stand. Dinnertime was only half way over, and now why was he leaving in the middle? He looked out over the hall and quickly walked out.
"Ginny, something's going on," she whispered to her friend, "Severus just left the hall earlier than he normally does."
Ginny turned towards the High Table and saw that indeed Professor Snape's chair was vacated when he'd just been there a few minutes ago. More troubling to her was the fact that neither Harry nor Ron had made it back to the castle.
"Speaking of missing people, where are Harry and Ron? I haven't seen them since class." Ginny looked around the room with concern.
"I didn't think you wanted to talk to Harry in front of everyone. Our whole herbology class seemed to know about your fight." Hermione nervously played with her food.
"I don't want to patch things up with him in front of everyone, but I do want to know where they are. It's not safe for any of us to be gone long and not know where the others are." Ginny spoke softly, not wanting anyone else at the table to hear them. At this point, they didn't know who was the enemy or who the members of the new Death Eaters supporting the new Dark Lord.
"I think we need to see if we can find where Severus went or Harry and Ron. It's time for a meeting. Let's go."
The two girls grabbed a few more rolls drizzled with butter and left looking for the missing men.
Severus slid along the wall, having disillusioned himself while leaving the Great Hall. Theo and Justin were easy to follow. If this was what the new generation of Death Eaters was like, it was truly pitiful. They should have known someone was following them, but he grinned with pride knowing that he had always been one of the best when it came to tailing and tracking others.
It also was to his advantage that they were now in the bowels of his dungeons that he knew better than anyone else in the castle. He'd lived here so long and explored all of the rooms, at least he think he'd done. It seemed like he often found a new room that the castle had been keeping private until someone had been in need of it. Albus used to talk about the strange things he found in the castle and how he was always amazed at the new things he'd discovered while out wandering.
Still following the two dimwits, Severus heard their conversation and smiled.
"Where are they?"
"I'm not sure."
"What do you mean you're not sure? You said you knew where we were supposed to meet them?"
"I thought the room was down this corridor. It's like the room disappeared or the castle is hiding it from us."
"You are an idiot! The castle can't change its rooms around like that."
"No really, I swear it was down here by the old painting of Barnibus the Demented…at least I think it was."
"You do know that we will be punished for being late."
"It's not our fault that you can't apparate inside of Hogwarts."
"Let's keep going down this hallway."
Severus heard their footsteps taking them farther down into the dungeons. Little did they know that indeed the castle was a living thing and could change to its own whims when it felt like it. Maybe the two would get lost forever down here. Nonetheless, he'd keep following them until they found the room or turned back. This was the closest they'd come to finding who their new leader was, and if he or she was in the castle they'd need to be dealt with before anyone else was hurt.
Hermione and Ginny headed down to the dungeons, which seemed the most likely place that Severus would have headed. They found out soon enough that he wasn't in his quarters, which baffled Hermione. Where could he be?
"I'm worried now Ginny. Where did he go? We always meet back here after dinner." Hermione looked both ways down the corridor, not seeing anyone yet, since dinner was still in full swing. Both girls headed back into his quarters and shut the door.
"Hermione, we can't go around asking for where Professor Snape is. That's too suspicious." Ginny said as she started wandering around looking at the books that lined the shelves of the built in bookshelf.
"But, the Slytherins see me down here anyhow since I'm his assistant. I just wish I knew which way he'd gone." Hermione sat thinking for a moment. Then her eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh Ginny, what is wrong with us? The Marauders Map."
Ginny laughed, "I know right where Harry hides it too. He's been keeping it somewhere so Ron wouldn't use it. Now that he knows what is happening…anyhow, let's go back to Gryffindor Tower."
"Do you think Professor Snape will be angry at us for following him?" Ginny asked.
"That's why it's a good thing we're doing this without asking for permission. It's always easier to ask for forgiveness later." Hermione smiled at Ginny as they left the dungeons. "Severus likes when we fight and make up."
"So you've told me." Ginny said sarcastically.
As the boys entered the Great Hall Harry noticed it looking quite empty, especially when he was looking for certain people who were noticeably absent.
Ron not stopping for anything, headed straight to the Gryffindor table and started eating.
"Where are they? I thought for sure they'd still be here." Harry mumbled as he put some food on his plate and started eating.
No one answered as Ron's mouth was so full of food and no once else had heard him. Harry reached out and smacked Ron on the arm sending his fork sailing in the air. It swiftly came down landing in Seamus's soup across the table.
"Ron watch yourself," Seamus said as he glared across the table at him and Harry.
"Um, sorry mate," Ron said as he turned to Harry, "What's wrong? Why'd you do that? That hurt."
"You weren't listening to me. Look around, who is missing and should be here?" Harry asked.
It didn't take long looking down the table for him to know who wasn't there. "You're right they should be here and someone else should be up there." Ron nodded with his head.
"What did we miss here while we were out on the pitch?" Harry started to scan the rest of the Great Hall. As soon as his eyes landed on the Slytherin table and then the Hufflepuff table, his heart skipped a beat. Were his friends and girlfriend missing because of the junior Death Eaters? Was it just a coincidence that key players in this mystery were all absent from the Great Hall at the same time?
Harry jabbed Ron again on his arm, "Come on, we've got to go."
"What do you mean we've got to go? We've just got here and I'm hungry." Ron griped as he shoved more food in his mouth. "Where are we going anyway?"
Harry snatched another biscuit off the table, "I don't know."
"You don't know where we going, but we have to leave our dinner behind?" Ron stood up and followed Harry out of the big doors.
"We're heading back to our room so I can get the map, and then we'll know where to look from there. All I know is that we're not going to sit around stuffing our faces while people we love could be in danger."
"That's one thing I do agree with you about Harry. If someone we love needs our help, we're not letting any of them down again."
Harry and Ron entered their dorm room only to see Hermione and Ginny digging through Harry's trunk. Both girls jumped in surprise as they saw the boys running through the door.
"Where the hell have you two been?" Harry spat at the two of them.
Ginny's face turned red and shouted back, "Where have you two been? You were nowhere to be found at dinner?" The two started towards each other as the tension in the room grew.
"You were the ones that were missing. Why are you here rummaging through my trunk?" Harry's eyes were big as he demanded an answer.
"We were…just going to…um…borrow something." Ginny said her tone softening.
"Would that something be the Marauders Map?" Harry asked his temper still ignited.
"It wasn't her idea Harry," Hermione interrupted their argument.
Harry look towards her like he hadn't noticed that she had also been digging through his things. "So what is going on? Why do you need the map? We were coming to get it to look for you."
Ron stood awkwardly by watching the whole scene play out, his arms folded in front and a smug look on his face.
"We saw Professor Snape leave during dinner and knew something was up. So we decided to follow him, but he wasn't down in his rooms." Ginny backed up a little towards Hermione.
"We thought it was best to come get the map to locate Severus instead of wandering around in the dungeons." Hermione explained in her teaching voice. " I think we've all learned our lesson, especially knowing that there are Death Eaters in the castle again."
Harry now calmed down sat on his bed, "You did the right thing coming back. Merlin knows what is hiding down in the dungeons."
Ron stepped forward, "So are we going to look at the map or not? That's why we're all here."
Harry hopped off his bed, "First I need to do something very important." He marched back over to Ginny and wrapped his arms around her. Bending her back, his lips pressed against hers and gave her a long kiss. Finishing, he brought her upright, "I'm sorry for being an Ass. I love you and I don't want to fight anymore."
Ginny stood in shock until a wide grin crossed her face, "Oh Harry, I'm sorry too." Then she launched right back into his arms where she preceded to snog him ferociously until Ron snorted in the corner.
"Can you two celebrate when we get back? Oi Ginny! You are my baby sister and all. I don't need to see this." Ron covered his eyes in mock horror.
"Grow up Ronald. We're not having sex in front of you, only sharing a kiss." Ginny said as her arms still were around Harry as the two now reunited lovers couldn't stop staring at one another.
Hermione's gasp broke up the brother-sister chatter, "I found him in the dungeons and he's not alone." She looked up as terror flashed in her eyes. Holding up the map to her friends she leaned against the wall, "You're not going to believe who's down there with him."
