Draco pushed past her bedroom door, bracing himself the entire way. He hadn’t seen her in a week, and although he wanted nothing more than to embrace her and kiss her and tell her how he truly felt, he knew none of that would fly well with Astoria and the real Sasuke. It frustrated him more than he could ever hope to articulate. It felt as though they were torturing him, testing his loyalty and dedication.
But what they didn’t know was the dynamic of his bond with Hermione. She was a smart girl. Very rarely did anything escape her wits. In her fourth year she had been the only person in all of Hogwarts, faculty and student body alike, to discover the Defense Against Dark Arts professor was a werewolf. Surely she could point out a dose of Polyjuice Potion. Skepticism flowed in her blood.
And, yet, as he entered her bedroom and saw her fast asleep at the desk, he couldn’t help but forget everything and remember her as he knew her last.
His wife.
His love.
His life.
The former Slytherin approached her, letting a hand hover over her face and breathing in her lavender scent. Even amidst Death Eaters of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds, she maintained herself in such a delicate yet unapologetic way. He found it admirable. And Astoria hadn’t been lying in her note. Hermione looked well. She looked rested. She looked healthy and fed.
The weight in his chest lessened, but only for a moment.
Her eyes flickered open, just in time to catch him as he yanked his hand away from her face. Hermione straightened on her chair, startled. “Sasuke?” she started, reminding him of his current physical state. “What are you doing here?”
Draco paused, drawing a complete and utter blank.
“Is something the matter?” she asked, undoubtedly on to his strange behavior. “Is there something you’d like to tell me?”
He shook his head, deciding it was best to speak when necessary.
Hermione narrowed her eyes for a moment, tightening her grip on something. He glanced down and saw a journal on her lap – the journal, if he had to guess. “Would you care to explain where this came from?”
Vagaries, he reminded himself. Just play it cool.
“Did he put you up to this?” asked Hermione, probably referring to the Dark Lord. “Because it seems like a cruel and twisted joke to me.”
Draco wondered what was up with that journal and what Sasuke had to do with it. Had he given it to her? Better yet, why hadn’t Astoria just taken a moment to prep him? It was all so difficult to piece together.
“We can discuss it later,” he said, trying his best to keep Sasuke’s calm and collected tone. “Right now I’ve been sent to check up on you.”
“Well, I’m fine,” she said, sounding fairly agitated.
He wanted to smile. He hadn’t seen her so fired up since their days at Hogwarts. The old Hermione Granger had always provided for an excellent source of amusement.
“What’s so funny?” asked the former Head Girl. “Do you find my predicament amusing? If only I could put into words where this stupid journal has taken me.”
“Where has it taken you?” he asked, before he could stop himself.
“I’m sure you know how horcruxes work,” she said matter-of-factly. “It was a memory, from when he was a little boy.”
Draco tried his best to make sense of it all, knowing none of this information was meant for his ears – not yet, anyway. “Like I said, we can discuss it later. Right now you should rest.”
“I don’t know why you felt the need to come over here, interrupt my sleep and then tell me to rest,” she said, narrowing her eyes again. “I’m sorry for my tone, but pardon me when I say I’m no fool. I know something is up. So you can either tell me right now or…or…”
“Or what?” he asked, surprising himself. “You’re held captive by the Dark Lord and making threats at one of his Death Eaters. I suggest you choose your next words carefully.” Draco had no idea where any of that came from. He felt like his seventeen-year-old self again, at Voldemort’s tail. It wasn’t a nice feeling.
Hermione was taken aback. “I – I still have rights.”
“As a prisoner?”
She blinked, a touch of defeat in her eyes. “For some reason I thought you cared, but I have to keep reminding myself you’re a Death Eater.” The young woman glanced down. “And, really, how much can a Death Eater care about a Muggle-born?”
More than you could ever know, Draco wanted to say. “I think you’ve mistaken my role in all of this,” he said, oblivious to where he gathered this perspective. “I…I was sent to look after you, make sure you stay in one piece.”
“Not to be my friend,” she finished. “I know. It was my mistake.”
He felt for her. He really did. At least he had Astoria, but whom did Hermione have in all of this? Nobody. She was completely alone. It was no wonder she took solace in the calm and composed Ren Sanada. For a moment this made Draco jealous, but he knew her heart and her mind. She was not the type to cheat.
If only she knew Sasuke was on their side.
“Do you miss him?” he asked, daring to go there.
Hermione glanced up at him, neither offended nor annoyed. “Yes,” she said simply. “I would give anything to see him.”
His insides tossed and turned. Draco felt as though he was going to be sick. He wished he could just grab her and tell her what was going on, who he was, but none of that would happen, not then. He settled for a pat on the shoulder. “Young love is difficult,” he said, feeling as though that was something Sasuke would say.
But what he hadn’t anticipated was for Hermione to stand up from her chair and throw her arms around him, in a tight hug. It was only then that he realized she was crying. “I hate this,” she sobbed. “I hate this so much.”
I do, too.
He could feel her tiny chest jump every time she struggled to breath against all the tears. “I know you aren’t my friend. I know you were sent to babysit me. I know all of that, but can you please just pretend we’re on the same side?” she begged. “Just for a moment.”
He didn’t know what to say, so Draco agreed by wrapping his own arms around her, getting lost in the moment despite his better judgment. It felt good to hold her again.
“Thank you,” she said quietly against his chest. “I’m usually stronger than this, but after walking into Harry’s memory…I don’t know what to think or feel anymore.”
Draco continued to comfort her, registering her words several moments later. He paused. Harry’s memory? Had he heard her correctly? Because that would mean the journal, or rather the horcrux, belonged to Harry Potter. From what he gathered before, he assumed it was another one of Voldemort’s.
It couldn’t be…
Harry Potter would never have left a horcrux. It went against every bone in the four-eyed orphan’s body.
“I should leave,” he said, betraying his own wants and needs. “I…I have somewhere to be.”
Hermione pulled away, wiping what was left of her tears and nodding. “All right. Thank you for the hug. I…I know it was an odd request but…but…”
“You don’t have to explain,” he said. “I’ll see you soon, Hermione. Have a good night.”
~
The young woman watched Sasuke leave, perplexed by his behavior. He was so out of character that night – first with the brashness, then with the hug and to top it all off, calling her by her first name. He only ever referred to her as ‘Miss Granger’ and even though it made her feel terribly awkward, she knew something was going on and made it her personal mission to find out whatever it was.
