Sipping his coffee, trying to stay awake, Severus rubbed his gritty eyes. It was almost three in the morning and he was exhausted, but it was imperative that he stay awake. Black, Potter and Lucius were at a meeting with the solicitor Lucius found, so he and the rest in the house were awake to make sure nothing was off when they returned. Well, all but Draco. He was dozing off, leaning against his mother. Sighing, refilling his coffee cup after finishing it, he then glanced at his pocket watch again. This was nerve-wracking, though he wasn't worried about the meeting. Trying to keep focused, he asked the bleary-eyed looking Lupin, “The day after tomorrow you and Arthur are going to take Potter to see his parents?”
“Arthur and I have something worked out,” Remus told him with a nod, sipping at his own coffee. “I went over there today and laid out the fact no one had bothered to take Harry to see his parents, something that really upset him, so he agreed to go with us. We've made sure we're the only ones that know about the visit. He is aware to keep it quiet. I think we'll just employ a simple glamour on all of us so anyone that might see anything won't know who we are.”
“The way to go,” Severus nodded, relieved. Though he would take Potter, as that was the right thing to do for the young man, he was more comfortable with this. Emotional scenes, something that were bound to come with this, weren't things he dealt with well. “I'll make sure to be over here to run interference if someone shows up. That way no one thinks anything is off. I'll come up with some viable excuse if someone does come over for what you're doing.”
Holding onto her dozing son with one arm, Narcissa asked, “Any idea what can be done with Wormtail?” She knew about that part from hearing various discussions and was curious.
“We're working on a couple of things for that,” Severus assured her. “We have a line on a few things that might work to do what we need before getting him into the right hands. Rest assured, we know time is of the essence with this issue and plan to have it done as quickly as we can manage.”
“We don't have much time before the start of term, Severus,” Remus told him softly, shaking his head.
“I know,” Severus sighed, a dour look on his face. “It's a race against the clock, that we understand. I'll be honest in saying it's not an end of the equation we thought of, though should have. We'll manage, don't worry. It's just going to take us finding the right way to do it and protect many.”
“Understood,” Remus sighed. He finished the last of his coffee and was about to pour another cup when the temporary ward they set up flashed then revealed the names of those entering the house. Relieved when it showed it was Sirius, Harry and Lucius, he straightened up and waited.
Walking in after the polyjuice wore off, the three then sat at the table, with Harry between the two men.
Looking around, a pleased expression on his face, Lucius said, “It'll all be handled. He's taking Harry's case and Sirius'. We signed the papers for him to put Remus in place as official guardian, as the will stated, though that is just for show as Sirius will be cleared then will be put in his rightful role as well as to take over the rest of the mess. He's going to wait on some of it until we're out, like taking the house in Godric's Hollow back and the seat on the Wizengamot. For the latter, he's going to get a neutral party assigned, one that takes on such things, until Harry reaches his majority. Once that happens, it'll have to go through Harry's guardian as to what way to vote on so much. Which is fine. We can handle that, even in hiding. Sirius knows what he's doing with such areas, so it's not a problem and will be left up to him. He's going to Gringotts tomorrow to get a full accounting of everything they have then will go from there to deal with it and get the fingers out of areas where they don't belong.”
Holding the tired Harry against him, Sirius said, “He says he can easily undo everything that was done. If they fight him, he's going to sue and make damned sure it's public when he does it. No one, anywhere, is going to react well if it goes public that the Ministry, Albus and the Wizengamot screwed over a war orphan, especially Harry. They won't want to take that step.” Looking at Lucius, who was glancing at him, he added, “And we think we know what that other vault is for. If it's what we think, it's probably our out.”
“What is it for?” Severus asked, looking between the two, pleased with what he was hearing.
“For running the house that Harry's guardian would use for him,” Lucius said. “The stipend is to take care of Harry's needs, like clothes and whatnot. This was probably set up to run the house itself. And if it's a vault of its own, it's probably a big one. It would probably also contain all the papers needed to do that. When the full accounting of properties comes in, it'll be listed on there with a note what it is. Our guess is, from what we know of old families, it's a very protected house that is like this one. With what was going on at the time James and Lily set this up, we're betting it's an old one that has every protection on it we need. They knew what was going on and were trying to protect Harry, so that would make sense. If that's the case, we have what we need. Harry's already agreed to allow us to use it for that if it's the case. When the official papers come in about the guardian, what it is will come with that, explaining what James and Lily wanted done with that end. So, we need this set up for that reason as well.”
“That could work nicely,” Remus said with a firm nod. “Anything else we need to know?”
“You'll be getting paperwork to sign tomorrow,” Lucius told him. “Go ahead and do that. It's going to release things we do need to you, such as a birth certificate and other such items. I'll help you with that and walk you through just what is in those papers. It's going to put you as temporary guardian until an official one is put in place. That'll end up being Sirius before long. So, it's just a formality for now to ensure Harry's best interests are protected. It's also not something anyone will know about unless they do some serious digging. Even then, unless they override the spells put on it, no one will find it. I doubt Albus knows that custody was transferred anyway at this point. So, it's nothing to worry about. We desperately need what will come with you signing those papers for when we go into hiding.”
“I'll do that, no problem,” Remus said with a firm nod, pleased with this.
“Harry also signed for me to take over the financial end. We thought that best,” Lucius said, patting the sleepy young man on the back.
“Lucius knows what he's doing with that,” Sirius said, summoning a butterbeer for both him and Harry. “He's going to comb through everything, looking for anything off. We don't think, from what we saw, that there was any fiddling with that, thankfully, but Lucius knows what he's looking for better than I do. He's also better at the financial end than I am. We also signed the release for you to receive the stipend, Remus. The solicitor is going to go in and take out what should have been used for that over the years then shift it to another vault. Then he's going to consolidate the money into one and close out unneeded ones. Anything stored in them that isn't money will go into another after the goblins catalog everything. That way we know what is where when it comes to everything and it's easier to keep track of it.”
Liking what he was hearing, Snape nodded. “Good. Is there any way that Albus can find out you've done this?”
“Now, no,” Lucius told him smugly. “It's all as official as we get it and, once Remus signs the papers tomorrow, completely legal. And it's hidden, as all things to do with minors in this area are. It doesn't matter who tries to get into them, they can't. Eventually it will come out. We think it should be made public once Sirius is cleared and takes over. Albus isn't apt to take him on when it comes to so much. He also suggested, and we think it's something that needs done, frankly, once Sirius does take over, we do an official bonding. That will make it rock solid and Albus can't do a damned thing. It won't be made public, of course, but it'll be there and nothing can override it. That way, as Harry is still a minor, both Sirius and I will be in charge of so much. We can easily protect him from almost anything, between the two of us.”
“Good,” Snape said with a pleased nod, thankful this went how it should have.
“He's also drawing up papers to withdraw Harry from Hogwarts,” Sirius said after taking a sip of the butterbeer. “He knows about the bond, as we told him and gave proof, so this will make it legal. Remus will get the first of those tomorrow. As they are just the preliminary ones of them, it won't trigger anything off or alert anyone that's what we're doing. Before we go into hiding, when I take over as guardian, I'll sign the ones that will cause the most issues and trigger it officially at Hogwarts. Albus won't get anywhere with me on that. If we time it right, he won't even know until we're out. That's what we're shooting for.”
“This is good,” Narcissa said with a smile and nod. “What we need.”
Looking at his wife, Lucius said, “You and I need to get together about some of this. I'm sure you know what it means. I'm going to go through my solicitor to work it so both you and Draco are as protected as I can get you and well cared for. We'll work something out as I'm not forcing you to leave your home. I want you there. As big as Malfoy Manor is, even if we take up residence there when we can, it won't cause issues.”
Knowing from the time that the bond was discovered that divorce was coming at some point, Narcissa wasn't surprised or hurt by this turn of events. “We'll work something out, Lucius. Never fear.”
“One end of this mess is taken care of, or at least as well as we can get it done at this point,” Sirius said with a sigh of relief. “And it's a start of another. Once we get the accounting of what is where, I think we have a damned good shot at finding somewhere to go. If we have something, we'll work out how to do this. I think, as long as some of it has sat empty, some work will need done and serious cleaning taken on, but that won't be hard to handle.”
“It won't be,” Lucius assured him. “Between all of us, we can take on the warding, I would think, as it would just be adjusting what's there. The rest—I have plenty of elves, though I will bet there are already ones in place. It'll just be a matter of getting Harry into the house once, so they know their 'master' is coming, for them to take it on and make sure it's handled. Then we'll look at what needs repaired. Elves can handle that as well. If I have to switch some of the Malfoy ones, I will. That's easy enough. Either that or we can buy some more from Gringotts. They hold many as they come with houses they purchase.”
“Good,” Sirius sighed with a nod.
“If we find something, and it sounds like we will, we need to work on a diversion to get all of you out of here,” Severus said, looking around.
“I say we just up and vanish. All there is to it,” Sirius said, looking at the man. “There isn't a damned thing Albus can do if we do that.” Eyes sliding to the sleeping Draco, he added, “And I'm going to bind Kreacher to Draco. That should work for that part. This way he comes with and won't reveal anything to anyone. And Albus can't get his hands on him to try. With Draco being Regulus' child, Kreacher probably will like it and won't fight me on it.”
“Perfect plan,” Lucius nodded, liking that, not having thought of that end of the mess.
“That you need to do,” Severus said pointedly. “Let's see what presents itself once we're sure we have something then we'll revisit the topic of getting out. We all know nothing in this mess ends up simple.”
Chuckling at that, Harry reached up and rubbed his eyes, blinking. He was exhausted, no doubt there. Quietly, he said, “That's for sure! Just when we think we have something easy to work with, a spanner gets tossed in it.”
“True!” Sirius chuckled.
Shifting around, Harry excused himself to go take care of something personal.
Watching his godson go, Sirius waited until he couldn't hear his footsteps then said, looking at Remus, “I'm going to send you out this week to get his birthday presents. It's time he had a good one for a change and I want to make it special. With all he's gone through, it's time someone did that.”
Seeing Remus give a firm nod, Lucius added, “Narcissa and I will have you do so as well and pick up things from us. I think we were both unaware how shabbily he was treated up to this point and it's time it ends.”
“I'll handle it,” Remus told them firmly. “Give me an idea of what you want to get him and I'll find something nice.” Looking around, he added, “If we're going into hiding, we also need to prepare for all kinds of other issues.” Looking at Severus, he asked, “Can you get your hands on a copy of what we need for the upcoming term when it comes to books? I think we should start hording what we need now so we have it in place. I'm sure we'll find a way to get what we need, but I want to prepare as much as I can before that.”
“I can and will,” Severus told him firmly. “I'll get that over to you in the next couple of days. For now, we need to look at you not being able to go anywhere. After a time, we'll work from there. I'm sure we'll find a way to get necessities as this goes on. Food isn't a problem, as the elves can handle that easily with the system you have here. Clothes and other such items we won't worry about either as some of the rest of us can handle that. Entertainment items I would look into as that's going to be something you'll need.”
“I'm also going to suggest you pick up books on our society. Harry needs to know what his place in it means. He holds a seat he will eventually take over. As of now, no one, anywhere, has explained just what this means and how important that is. We can easily take that on and teach him, but books on it will help. The same with understanding his family history. He honestly needs to know that to take over what he has,” Lucius said, looking up as Harry came back in.
Slipping an arm around Harry when he sat back down and leaned against him, Sirius nodded. “We need to. I'll handle that end when I'm cleared, but he will have to take it over when he reaches adulthood. I'll take back mine, of course, as it's now not a valid seat until I die or am cleared.” Looking down at his confused godson, Sirius quickly explained what they were talking about. Seeing him nod, he said, “We can easily do this one.” Blinking rapidly, he sighed then said, “I say we hit the hay. I'm beat and can't see straight at this point. So, I need to get to bed.” Hearing the same thing from everyone else, he helped Harry to his feet then headed in that direction.

Dozing in his chair, arms folded over his chest, Severus came awake when the Dark Lord pulled his head out of the Pensieve. He thought this was the best way to go about imparting the conversation he had just been a part of as he was so tired he was sure that he would forget something.
Taking a seat behind his desk, Tom rubbed his tired eyes but nodded. “Good. They are handling everything. If they are right about that house, something I'm sure of, that's the way to go.”
“Lucius and Black know what they're talking about when it comes to such matters, so I'm positive they are. It's the way to go, that I'll admit.” Severus told him.
“Alright, Severus, this means, as they got everything moving how they need it, we need to step up several things to get them going,” Tom told him, folding his hands on the table in front of him. “The two big ones I see are dealing with Mr. Potter's cousin and Wormtail.”
Nodding at that, trying to ensure he was focused, Severus sighed, “I think Mr. Potter's cousin needs handled quickly. That's going to be a mess. And it's going to determine some of what we have to work with, or they do. If they're getting out and the cousin is abandoned, he needs to go with them. So, that needs to come in quickly so it doesn't throw off any plans they make.”
“Very true,” Tom nodded. Sighing, he said, “Though I would like to have Wormtail handled, or at least the start of it, before we get to the other issue, I think we need to take on Dudley first. That way he's there. Mr. Potter will be upset, but I think I can manage to work with that. Especially when he finds out why. I say we set something up to get it done in a week or so. Honestly, this shouldn't be a hard operation to take on. I'll be there, personally, and undo the binding. I'll also ensure the rest of the family isn't hurt when we do it. We'll make it look good, of course, but no one will be harmed. It just has to be done fast is all. Arabella is going to sound the alarm quickly. What I think we can manage is making it look like we were interrupted when the Order and Ministry get involved. I'll set the planning in motion tomorrow.”
“I would suggest, as you're working with Mr. Potter to get him to trust you, get him a missive before you do the attack, like within an hour before, to assure him that you're not doing it to harm them and to wait so he can see the results. That will only help,” Severus suggested.
“I can easily do that,” Tom told him in a reassuring voice. “I'll also make it very clear that he can contact me via the link and I'll assure him the reason it was done. I would like you to take on the explanation of why we did it with the readings we have to back it up. You may not have the best relationship in the world to do that, but he'll know you're telling the truth.”
“Not a problem,” Severus told him. “I'll handle it. I'll also make sure he knows the consequences if that binding was left on. Once I impart that, it should go smoothly.”
“I would like you to press Albus to take them to Grimmauld Place right afterwards. That will help,” Tom told him.
“Another thing I can easily do,” Severus assured him. “With what you're doing, it'll be believable. I'll manage, don't worry. Just let me know before you start. In fact, it's probably better I'm at Grimmauld Place when you begin so nothing looks off.”
“I'll make sure you know ahead of time,” Tom said, leaning back. Sighing, he said, “We need to work on Wormtail. I think I have something that we can use to do what we need. One of the Unspeakables found it for me. This week I want the Veritaserum session with him. For that, I want you here and to provide the strongest version of it you can manage. I would prefer Lucius, as he may remember something we don't to check for, but we can work with it this way.”
“If we do it late at night, how this mess was handled tonight, we might be able to get him here. No one is going to object if they know the reasoning for it and will cover for him,” Severus suggested.
Thinking that over, Tom nodded, pleased, “That we'll do. I want to make damned sure we get rid of everything that might hurt us. After that, I have a way to get him into the right hands. I think, once he's in the custody of the DMLE, it should move quickly. That can only help all of them in that house.” Thinking it over, drumming his fingers on the desk, he added, “And if Black and Potter are willing, I know someone that can do the bonding. They will be able to do one that is far stronger than the standard. We'll get to that when the time comes, though. Before that step is taken, they need to finish the one on their end. Hopefully, that's progressing well.”
“It is,” Severus assured him. “If Potter and Black are willing to let Lucius take over the financial end of the mess, that tells me they're working with it.”
“Perfect,” Tom said with a sigh. Shaking his head, he chuckled, “Enough for tonight. Tomorrow, or later today, as the case may be, come back over and we'll work with this part to see what we can manage. Though we have the basics down, we're both too tired to delve into details and work them out. We'll sit down and formulate plans for what we have to do then. I think it's going to take me bringing in a couple of others to handle this as well, as we need several bodies to take on Privet Drive and make it look good.” Pulling the memory out of the Pensieve, he handed it back to the obviously tired Severus. “Let's get some sleep then we'll press on with what we have to do.”
Happy with that, as he was dead on his feet, Severus took the memory back then stood. After a bow, he said, “I'll return after some sleep.”
“Take your time, Severus, and rest. I need you as clear headed as I can get you to work with some of this. We'll manage, don't worry,” Tom told him in a reassuring voice. Watching the man leave, he sighed and leaned back. Sleep was needed though his mind was already working on the problems presented. After a shake of his head, he stood and made his way back towards his bedroom.
