“Why show us that?” Draco asked after hours of silence. “Lily had Potter who slayed the Dark Lord.”
Hermione shifted on his lap. “Because it was Snape who made the Dark Lord practically immortal.”
“Impossible. Those Horcruxes did that.”
“They were only insurance. Snape was…distraught over something one night at the safe house and we were the only two awake. I guess he was so far gone he didn’t realize he told me everything. Voldemort charged Snape with creating an elixir to make him more powerful when he first joined the Death Eaters. He infused it with Nagini’s venom, thus making the snake suitable for the last Horcrux. Snape also created the resurrection potion Wormtail used to bring him back. He didn’t even know it at the time.”
She didn’t miss the way Draco flinched at Voldemort’s name, nor the way he clutched her tighter. Still, she could tell by his breathing that something else was bothering him. She decided to wait it out.
“But only Potter had the power to destroy him and if Snape and Lily never broke up, then Potter wouldn’t have been born.”
“That’s the tricky part,” Hermione sighed. “The prophecy only said that a baby born at the end of July whose parents had defied him could defeat the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord would mark him as his equal because he had a power the Dark Lord didn’t know about.”
“Meaning?”
“Neville fit the description too but Voldemort chose Harry because he was a half-blood, like himself. And Snape’s love for Lily was probably part of that too. But you see, if Snape and Lily had stayed together, Harry’s dad could very well have been Snape.”
“And they would both have defied the Dark Lord,” Draco breathed. “Oh Merlin what a mess.”
Before they could continue their discussion the room turned again. It was the same one they’d seen before, the one Snape and Lily frequented. There was more? They watched as once again, a distraught Lily and a frantic Snape entered. They looked a little older, but not by much.
“What’s wrong Lils?” Snape asked anxiously. “You said to leave you be and then you said I had to come.”
“Sev, something is wrong, very, very wrong.”
“What? Are you hurt? Is someone threatening you? Is it James? I’ll kill him!”
“STOP!” Lily shrieked. “It’s so much worse than that. I don’t know how I hid it all summer. You have no idea how badly I wanted to go to you but I know how your dad is and I couldn’t risk-“
“LILS!” Snape roared. “Calm down and tell me what the devil is wrong so I can fix it!”
“That’s just it!” Lily said, bursting into tears. “You can’t fix this.”
“What can’t I fix?”
“I’m pregnant.”
Snape froze in place, her words shocking him beyond any reaction. The two teens in the corner bared a striking resemblance to him in that moment. Lily was pregnant? Where was THAT in the history books?
“Is it mine?” Snape finally was able to choke out.
Lily looked like he’d just slapped her. “Of course it’s yours. I’m not a slag!”
“I wasn’t saying you were,” he growled. “I just… I didn’t know if you had found…someone else.”
Lily softened. “No Sev, there hasn’t been anyone else. This baby is yours.”
“Baby,” Snape whispered. “What are we going to do?”
“Well I can’t hide it forever,” she sobbed. “I thought about…getting rid of it.”
“NO!” Snape yelled and then backtracked. “I’m sorry. No Lil, please don’t get rid of it.”
“What else are we going to do Sev? If Dumbledore finds out… we’ll be expelled!”
“He’s not going to find out,” Snape said, a glint in his eye. “We’re going to find a way to hide this.”
“Sev, how do you hide a huge stomach…or a baby? I’m not ready for this. We just barely sat our OWLS for Merlin’s sake! Honestly, can you take care of a baby? Do you know the first thing about them? What about our families? I’m sure your father will welcome your spawn with open arms and a great big grin.”
Severus pinched the bridge of his nose. “No. No you are right. But we just can’t get rid of it. It’s…a life.”
“I know,” Lily said. “That’s the conclusion I came to as well. But what are we going to do?”
Severus sighed and sat heavily on the couch, motioning for her to sit beside him. He drew her into his arms and stroked her hair as she sobbed. They looked so incredibly sad. It was in Snape’s eyes. He knew that even this wouldn’t allow him to keep her. That look was resolve. He was planning.
“I promised I would never leave you Lils,” he whispered. “I never break a promise.”
The scene dissolved only to be replaced by another. Lily was heavily pregnant, pale and panting as she held her stomach. It was obvious she was in labor. Snape was furiously reading a book, running his wand over Lily’s stomach and stirring a small cauldron over to the side. She and Snape had aged years in the months between the last scene and this one.
“Oh Gods Sev, it hurts so badly.”
“I know Lils,” Snape croaked. “The pain potion is almost done. You’re halfway there. Just a bit longer.”
Draco and Hermione watched in awe and horror as Lily struggled through the labor. Snape was everywhere at once, brewing pain potions and casting diagnostics. He allowed Lily to scream and curse at him, blame him for everything that was wrong with the world. She vowed to never speak with him again and begged him to turn from his Death Eater friends. She promised to be his forever if he would turn his back in one breath and cursed him a coward and a fool in another.
Snape took it all stoically. He understood the kind of stress she’d been under and the pain that she was in now. He diligently kept her hydrated and helped her to drink the pain potions. When the time came, he removed her lower garments and placed clean towels at her entrance. He asked the room for more warmth and light and a cradle. He helped Lily sit up and ordered her to push, ignoring what must have been a crushing grip on his hand.
“I see the head!” He proclaimed. “One more push, Lils. Come on, you can do it love.”
Lily screamed at the top of her lungs and pushed with all her might. The head slipped out and Snape told her to stop, spelling the infant’s airway clean. The cord was wrapped around its neck and he quickly untangled it before ordering her to push again. A few tries later, the baby slipped free. They both cried as Snape severed the chord and cleaned the now screaming baby.
“It’s a girl,” he said quietly. “And she’s beautiful.”
He lay the squalling infant on her chest while he prepared for the afterbirth. Lily stroked the tiny bundle’s cheeks and pushed when it was time. Severus quickly healed the damage she’d suffered and magically cleaned the womb. She wouldn’t go through the painful process of recovery like muggles. He’d done his homework. Afterwards, they both huddled together and marveled at what they created.
“We can’t keep her,” Lily said after long moments just holding the little girl.
“I promised you I’d find someone to look after her, and I have,” Severus said. “It’s a bit unconventional, but she will be loved and provided for. We’ll have permission to see her whenever we want and her parentage will be kept secret. I’ll have to take her tonight though. We should name her first.”
Lily nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks at the thought of giving her baby up. “Well, she was born on Valentine’s day. How about Venus?”
Snape nodded. “I like it. How about Venus Calla Evans?”
“Snape.”
“What?”
“She’s your daughter too,” Lily said quietly. “She should have your last name.”
“Oh Lils,” Severus croaked and kissed her forehead. “She’s the best thing I’ve ever done…probably for the rest of my life.”
“There’s still time to turn around Sev.”
Snape shook his head. “No. I’ll get the backing I need to support Venus.”
“It’s not right Sev. I just know it.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got it all figured out Lils.”
Lily shook her head sadly. “You aren’t going to change your mind.”
“No. I might not agree with the entire cause, but I can’t say no to the opportunity it presents me. Someone like me doesn’t become a respected Potions Master without financial backing. It’s my only chance.”
Lily sighed. “I think you’re making a mistake Sev, but for your sake, I hope it works out.”
The scene faded as the two new parents once again gazed upon little Venus. The two teens watching from the corner couldn’t help but think Lily’s words were prophetic.
AN: So, did anyone guess that? *grins evilly* I have to wonder if anyone was mad at my last chapter... and even more so at this one. But I HAD TO. HONEST. My muse has run amuck and I can't reign her in. She's a slave driver I tell you. I stayed up all night because she insisted I edit an original novel I have in the works and then she wanted me to write a oneshot (See no evil... ) and then I still have to finish the next chapters of Fooling Fate and Beyond the Pale. I'm going to slog through it though. As always, thanks to everyone who reviewed. They make writing worth it. Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys!!!
