When he comes back out, he is clearly thinking hard; and Evie goes to him and draws him over to the couch, sitting him down and telling him she knows how he feels, it was the same for her.
Remus says, “Okay. I can see why he had to kill Dumbledore; that was clearly an act of mercy, and I’m not surprised that Dumbledore would have turned his own tragedy into further protection for Hogwarts that way, it was just like him to put the school first. But Severus still didn’t explain how the two of you ended up together, and it still concerns me a little.”
Evie says, “Maybe someday I can tell you. If he didn’t include any of those memories then it’s not my place to reveal them either. All I can say is just to trust me on it; it happened very gradually, and he’s a good man, Remus. Better than any of us ever knew, other than Dumbledore.”
Remus nods, thinking about how it would be for him, having to share the memory of the night that Tonks finally convinced him of her love and that he was worth her love, having to share that moment of intense feeling and vulnerability with anyone else, especially someone he’d often been at odds with over the years, like Severus. He decides that if Dumbledore approved of them enough to congratulate them, that should be good enough for him as well.
Much as McGonagall had, he then asks why the Order can’t know. She tells him the same thing Phineas told Minerva but adds in what he told her himself, about none of them knowing exactly where Ted and Andromeda are with the twins; that it’s just too much of a risk, especially if any of them are ever captured and tortured.
He agrees, and says he won’t tell anyone, not even Tonks. She asks whether the children could come back, given that Snape clearly isn’t a threat to them, but he says that it’s probably still best that they don’t. Here, the children could not even go outside and play, and if the Death Eaters ever followed Snape here for some reason, it would be harder to try to protect them as well as themselves, than it would be to just protect themselves. She didn’t want to hear that, but eventually she also has to agree.
They go back into the kitchen, finding Severus standing at the window staring out at nothing, with a half-full glass of neat scotch in his hand. He turns as they come in, and Remus goes to him while Evie hangs back.
Remus says, “I understand, now, why you had to do it. I promise I will not tell anyone, not even my own wife.” He puts a slight emphasis on the last word, basically in response to the last memory Severus included as well as to his earlier accusations, and gives him a meaningful look. Severus looks back at him levelly and then looks down and nods once in return, acknowledging that he got both messages.
Remus’s look softens then, and he says, “Severus – congratulations to you both. And I am very glad to know that Evie has someone to watch over her and protect her.”
Severus looks past him at Evie, who is still standing just inside the doorway, still somewhat fearful of what they might say or do to one another; and there is both love and steel in his look and in his voice as he replies, “With my very life, Remus. With the very last breath in my body.”
Remus inclines his head gravely at Severus’s words; whatever else he may still be uncertain about, he’s absolutely sure that Severus meant that with every fiber of his being and he’s convinced that Evie is better protected now than she ever has been.
Remus gives Severus another long, meaningful look, man to man; saying with his look that as a man who has also found his soul-mate, he understands just how literally Severus meant that (because he feels the same about Tonks). A deep level of understanding passes between the two of them in that moment, one that they’ve never had with each other. Severus nods back at him, again indicating that he understands even what Remus hasn’t said.
With a reassuring look and nod to Evie, Remus takes his leave. Evie goes to Severus then, and puts her arms around him.
He cradles her in one arm, kissing the top of her head, and says, “Evie, I am sorry that I doubted you, even for a moment. Please forgive me?”
She smiles up at him, saying “Nothing to forgive, Severus. I’d probably have felt the same in your place, were the situation reversed. It’s not really doubt, it’s just fear of losing what we have; it just shows us how much we mean to each other, that’s all.”
He kisses her softly and then looks deeply into her eyes; then bends to kiss her again, much more hungrily this time. The range of emotions they've both just been through (especially each of them having had a reason to fear losing the other, even if only momentarily) fuels the fire quickly, and in moments they are tearing at one another’s clothes. He lifts her up onto the counter, entering her as she wraps her arms and legs both around him, crying out her need and love for him.
In just a few minutes both of them are spent and gasping. Evie cradles Severus’s face in her hands and kisses him gently. She looks at him with love, and then finally starts to giggle a bit as she looks at all the clothes strewn every which way on the kitchen floor. He grins slightly himself and kisses her on the nose as he withdraws and begins picking them up, for now only putting his boxers and trousers back on and laying his shirt, frock coat and cloak over the back of a chair.
After dinner, as Evie is curled up with Severus on the couch, she says that she hopes one day, he and Remus can get to know one another a bit better. Severus stiffens a bit, clearly not comfortable with the idea, and she says, “I know, dearest…I know. But of all of them, you had more in common with him even back then than you did with any of the rest of them; and I think you both knew it, even then. I think you’d very likely even have been friends, had it not been for my father and Sirius.” He still doesn’t say anything, but kisses the top of her head, tacitly acknowledging that she may be right.
She doesn’t say any more about it, but she does hope that one day, all of them (her, Severus, Remus, Tonks, and all the children) can spend time together, celebrate things like birthdays and anniversaries together, as friends do. She knows Severus has never had that in his life either, and while she also knows he's never going to be comfortable getting to know or spending time with other people (nor would she try to change that about him) still she thinks it would be good for him to have at least one friend besides her. Good for Remus as well, since he’s lost all of his friends at this point, at least that were in his same year at school, anyway.
