Chapter 26
Because PJ knew the article by Du Bois was hitting the paper that day, thus bound to cause chaos, ensuring more people than normal would be in and out, he stayed in bed longer then sent for his breakfast rather than go down and face what he knew was probably happening. Oh, sure, he sent Sirius a message about his plans so the man was aware, making sure the elf wasn’t seen by anyone else, but wouldn’t poke his head out until he was damned certain he wouldn’t end up drawn into whatever. While he didn’t like the idea of staying confined to their bedroom, it was the better option when it came to dealing with what he was positive was happening downstairs. Once things cleared out and settled, he would venture out then drag Remus and Sirius along to the gym and the other things he had to tend to.
With a groan, he rose then headed towards the bathroom to tend to the normal before eating. Once he ingested food and copious amounts of coffee, he would decide what he was doing from there. There was a ton, of course, and it was the perfect time to call Johnny to cover what was needed. The latter he would do.
Just before stepping into the bathroom, he sent Poe for the mail then stripped his nightclothes off and headed for the shower. Once he was more awake, he’d sort through what he was doing then go from there.
PJ was right; the kitchen was chaos at that point in time. Though it was the middle of the week, with plenty working, it was still overflowing with people. Most were the ones who didn’t work or were those who were teachers and not working yet. And it was loud.
As usual, Sirius was seated next to Remus, sipping his drink and taking it all in. Unlike the last article which caused hell, this was the good sort. Most loved what was written by Du Bois and how it exposed so much. Albus was concerned, as he always was, because of what it could unleash, but most knew this was going to shine the light on so much right where it belonged and leave plenty scrambling or out of office or a job.
After another drink, Sirius picked up the paper and read through the article again, nodding as he did. Though he and Remus knew the article was coming from PJ, they hadn’t seen an advance copy like the other, just knew the topic. It was better than they expected, far better. There were links to plenty who wouldn’t like what was said, including direct links when it came to Fudge being attached to Lucius and how the elder Malfoy seemed to help with plenty. Then the man correlated it with how Draco, no matter what he had done, including the attack at the book signing, wasn’t being prosecuted for his crimes. He even published internal memos from Fudge about how they were to leave Draco alone, despite evidence. Yeah, this would help them, a lot, and might get whatever moving the right way. Now they had to see what Fudge would do.
If the article itself wasn’t bad enough for the government, the editorial was worse. He had heard of Edwin Grorry many times over the years. The man was a well-respected reporter who had moved to the States years ago to work there. And he let all of the sheep and the government have it with what he said. Not pulling any punches, he gave the entire populace of the UK a good spanking, one which would sting for a long time, over abandoning what had made the UK great for so long and being sheep, not doing what was right. He, rightfully, pointed out how they were currently ignoring the past and how they had always stepped up to the fight, not putting their heads in the sand and hoping it would go away. He loved this.
Just after tossing the paper back down and focusing on what was being said, he was startled by an elf popping in and slipping him a note. He naturally assumed it was from PJ, so surreptitiously read it then nodded. PJ’s plan was a good one. After being able to slip out of the kitchen, he would write out a note for PJ and have an elf deliver it when he could to fill him in on what was going on. Before they delved into the worst of what was coming, he planned to slip out and do just that.
After tucking the note in his pocket, he leaned over and whispered to Remus, “PJ is going to stay scarce. The note an elf just gave me says he knows what hell this is probably causing and plans to stay up in our room. When I take a loo break, I’ll send him off a note about what’s going on and see what he’s doing.”
“Good plan,” Remus whispered back, nodding. Oh no, PJ didn’t need to come downstairs into the middle of this. While he did have to talk to PJ later about Tonks and her being a source, it could wait until this settled down. It was good, though, and what they needed! Yes, it could only help.
Having just finished his call with Johnny, and his dinner, PJ looked up when the door opened. From what Sirius’ note said earlier, there was chaos downstairs, so he wasn’t going to venture out. With all he had taken care of, it hadn’t bothered him in the least. In fact, it was a good way to catch up on plenty of work in many areas.
When he saw a tired looking Sirius step in, he nodded then waved his wand at his desk, sorting the mass of papers there into piles before pulling the one containing information about his upcoming article closer. It was something he wanted Sirius to see, though it wouldn’t hit until the following week.
“Anything I need to know about?” he asked when Sirius finally took a seat with a soft groan. He assumed there were a few items, but not much as he knew plenty more about the article than the readers.
“Not really other than most loved the article,” Sirius chuckled, taking a beer from one of the elves when they popped in. “We’re just going to have to wait for the fallout from it to see what comes. Albus doesn’t like plenty Du Bois exposed as he thinks it’ll set the evil arse off even more, something I do agree will come, and is sure Fudge is just going to scramble to cover himself from it then not much will happen, but it’s out there. We needed that. I also think he doesn’t like it as it’s screwing with his plans and nothing is going the way he wants it to as plenty are doing their own thing with the information, not disseminating it the way he feels it should be done. Don’t care, though.”
Then he added, “Remus will join us shortly. He needs to talk to you about Tonks and her being a source.” Before PJ could ask, he told him, grinning, “She agreed, so he just needs you to set up how to contact her.”
“Will do without a problem,” PJ grinned, thinking this was perfect. Then grabbing the stack which contained his copy of the article hitting next week, he passed it over to Sirius. “You both need to read that. It’s my article. I don’t have the editorial coming with it, but I was assured it’s just as scathing as the one today, if not more so. When you’re done, I need to pick your brain about a couple areas for me to look for some information.”
“Will give you all the help I can,” Sirius assured him in a distracted tone as he started to read.
PJ settled back, sipping his coffee, grinning a tad as Sirius plowed through what was there. When Sirius began to snort and chuckle, a grin growing, PJ couldn’t help but snicker, knowing what caused it. He would show Remus later so the man knew as well, but would start out with Sirius then press on from there with what he needed.
“That is just as good, if not better than the one today,” Sirius snorted, grinning, when he finished and handed the papers back to PJ. “No one is going to like it if they are connected to Fudge, Lucius or the Prophet. It’s all backed up with real facts and proof I take it?” He then asked, though assumed it was.
“Oh yes,” PJ assured him with a nod. “Some of the memos and such I have, not to mention records, will go in the article. Every bit of proof I have is in the hands of the wire service and can be pulled out if they need it. It’s the truth, just what I can prove so far anyway.” Then he added, “That’s part of what I want to pick your brain about.”
“What do you need?” Sirius asked, settled back and relaxing, still grinning just a little.
“A line on sources,” PJ told him honestly. “I’ll contact them, of course, and not let them know I received their name from you, but I need some help. There is a connection to this I’m trying to prove,” he then started, reaching over to grab the research on other articles in the series then handed it over to Sirius, “with Lucius, Fudge and the editor of the Prophet. The owner of the Prophet—from what I can tell, he doesn’t have a hand in squat and lives all year round in the Bahamas. Hell, I doubt he reads the paper. As he owns several around the world, he’s the sort who just collects the money and goes from there. My research tells me he’s not been in the UK since the end of the last war. Even then it was just for some of the celebrations and he was gone again.”
Sirius gave a distracted nod as he went through what PJ handed him, eyes widening as he read some of it. “Damn,” he muttered as he read through parts about the connection with Lucius and other tidbits. “This is huge,” he then added as he kept going.
“It is,” PJ nodded, chuckling softly. “I just need to prove it more than I have there. Everything I’ve found leads to the connection of payoffs from Fudge to the editor of the Prophet with Lucius being the conduit, and probably muscle of some sort, to ensure it goes how Fudge wants. I just can’t find anything that gives me the connection. It’ll just take one form of proof I can present which has to end up verified. It’s what I can’t find.”
“None of this surprises me,” Sirius told him honestly as he finished then glanced through what was there again to make certain he didn’t miss anything.
“Doesn’t me either, honestly, as I don’t think Fudge alone, even with some in the Ministry backing him, has the clout to strong-arm the Prophet the way he has. It takes more than he has to manage to cow a paper, even one as trashy as the Prophet.”
“I agree,” Sirius nodded when he finished and passed the papers back. “I’ve always wondered, honestly, though just assumed Fudge had something on them he could use. Well, or pulled out something else to get them to see the world his way.”
“What do you need from me? You have my word; I’ll help all I can,” Sirius then inquired.
“A line on a source from either Gringotts, the Ministry or someone close to Fudge or Malfoy who can confirm it, with proof. And I need more than their word on it,” PJ said honestly. “I would add the Prophet, but I’m too leery of dealing with anyone there as most wouldn’t want to deal with me and my alter ego. Not to mention I wouldn’t trust them to give anything real.”
“You don’t want much, do you?” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head. Then, blowing out a breath, he told him, “Let me and Remus put our heads together to see who we can think of. We know a couple, but they are too close to the Order or are members. Not something you want to chance as it would get back to Albus. Not to mention they’ve seen you. Your Glamour is good, but it’s too risky.”
“It is,” PJ agreed with a nod. “I have a maybe, one I’m meeting this week to talk it over with, but not sure how fruitful it’ll end up. Once I know who it is and see what proof he can give me, I’ll go from there. Not counting the dragon eggs before they hatch, though.”
“In this instance—not sure how much help we’ll be, honestly,” Sirius admitted, slouching down in his chair.
“Even a hint will help,” PJ tossed out there. “I can take it from there. Gringotts isn’t one I’m hopeful on because of their strict privacy policies. Anything dealing with the goblins, unless I can get one of them as a source, is bad business.”
“Yeah, it is,” Sirius agreed with a sigh. “Let’s see what we can manage, just don’t expect a miracle on it. This is one—not sure what we can do for you.”
“I didn’t think you’d be much help, but was hoping,” PJ admitted with a shake of his head. “I’ll find it, it will just take me time, nothing more. No one, especially those with this kind of power, hide their tracks so well it can’t be found. They tend to end up arrogant enough they think no one will look. Here in the UK? It’s even worse. If it was the States, I probably would have no shot at finding anything. Fudge is—inept is too nice of a word. There is also an arrogance about him which makes him think he’s untouchable and no one would think to look. He’s dead wrong there.”
“I agree,” Sirius nodded. Then he added, tone determined, “We need him out, PJ! I mean it. We know Madam Bones is the most likely one to take his place. She’s one who will do what’s right and will not pull the shit Fudge has. The sooner she’s in place, or someone like her, the better we’re going to end up in this mess.”
“We all know this as well,” PJ grumbled, shaking his head. “Du Bois and I have talked it over plenty. If one of the weeklies over here would just step up and convert to a daily then take on so much, you lot would end up in better shape. We’re coming up with plenty which would help, but we won’t cover because we work for a wire service which wouldn’t pick up the articles. The Prophet sure as hell won’t pay for them. The weeklies now wouldn’t either because they would end up out dated and be no help by the time they hit the papers. If you lot know a way to get one of the weeklies to convert to a daily, it would help.”
“It’s a damned good suggestion,” Sirius told him, thinking it over. “Let me see if I can find someone to put a bug in their ear about it. Not sure. Albus might manage, though you never know there when it comes to him because of his plotting and scheming. Others—they have some pull. Let’s see what we can do. It’ll just take time.”
“And time is probably the one thing you don’t have, honestly,” PJ told him with a shake of his head. “I’m sure the old goat is right; this is going to set off hell. The more we pull out and take after, the angrier the evil arse will get then he’ll go off his nut and set it all on fire. Hogsmeade won’t end up an isolated incident, Sirius. The same with the book signing. With what was in that paper today, I’m sure plenty are feeling the heat then will step up what they’re doing.”
“More I won’t disagree with,” Sirius said softly, shaking his head. “We’ll manage something. Just might not be until after there’s no denying he’s back. Even then it’ll help.”
“We’re doing what we can for you, though it’s not the whole reason,” PJ shrugged. “They are good stories which sell, we both know it. We also know what they can manage.” With a chuckle and grin he then added, “And we also know they can bring us plenty, personally. Both of us have awards for what we’ve done, which helps our credibility. It’s no secret these are the sorts of stories which garner awards.”
“And those of us who really know what’s going on have no problem if you do,” Sirius laughed, reaching over to give PJ a clap on the knee. He then sobered up and added, “As much help as those articles are, no one will say a damned thing if they help you and your reputation. You both, from all we’ve heard, are doing this for the right reasons and know they make a good story, not just looking at winning something.”
“If you do this just to get the arsepats, you need out of the business,” PJ shrugged, relaxing. “Neither of us do it for that reason.”
“Another reason we don’t mind,” Sirius assured him.
“Right,” PJ then pressed on, “when Remus comes up, I need to set up times with you to go out and tend to some areas, like the gym. There is the meeting with my source as well. That—I don’t like the idea, but I need you to come along as he’s going to want to meet in a Magical area. Not sure where, as he’s not returned my owl yet, but I want to plan for it now.”
“We’ll manage whatever you need,” Sirius said, looking determined. “We can come up with some suggestions when it comes to places which should keep you both safe, though they are among our kind. Not to worry.”
“I was thinking St. Mungo’s, in the coffee shop,” PJ told him. “It’s a place which is busy enough that we won’t be looked at oddly and is safe so far.”
“Good suggestion,” Sirius agreed, happy with the idea as it was an odd place most wouldn’t think of for a meeting like this. “Do you know who this is so we can kind of plan?”
“No idea actually,” PJ sighed with a shrug. “I just know he’s one that is supposedly attached to Fudge and closely. The closer I can get to Fudge, the better I’m going to end up when it comes to real information. Let’s see what he brings, if he doesn’t grow cold feet, that is.”
“True,” Sirius nodded. “We’ll manage and stay out of the way so no one sees us.” He then looked up at the soft knock on the door before it opened. Knowing it was Remus and they would start with other areas, he shifted around to get comfortable. Plenty to do with this, so they needed to start.
When an owl gave a hoot, one which sounded close, Sirius awoke with a start. Disoriented and unsure what was going on, he squinted at the bedside table then groaned when he saw it was only about five in the morning. With a shake of his head, he glanced around then realized the hoot came from Hedwig. As he could hear Edgar and Poe doing their normal, he then rolled his eyes and flopped back down, assuming the owl was telling them off for annoying her, something normal. After rubbing his eyes, fully planning to go back to sleep for a few more hours, he then grabbed his wand and shot the spell at the partition to make it invisible. It was then his eyes widened and he propped himself up on his elbow to get a better look.
PJ was in bed for the night, or so it appeared, but not asleep yet, instead, he was naked and wanking. Sirius’ eyes were glued to what PJ as doing, taking it all in. Of course, his own cock hardened at the sight, throbbing slightly though it was only seconds after starting to watch. With a moan he suppressed, he flushed in arousal at the show.
It appeared he had come in just at the end because, in only a couple of minutes, PJ came, arching up off the bed, splattering his chest with his cum and moaning softly. Sirius bit back the moan which threatened to escape him at the sight, but it was a near thing. Oh hell yes, that was wonderful, though he didn’t get to see it long.
While PJ was cleaning himself up, Sirius quickly canceled the spell on the partition and flopped back with a groan of his own. Now wide awake, cock throbbing, he shut his eyes and envisioned what he had just seen. Before he fell back to sleep, he was damned sure he was going to have a session with his own hand over what he saw. He also vowed to push things along faster. How? He didn’t know, but he’d manage.
As he lay there, waiting for a time to ensure PJ was asleep and not likely to come through to use the loo or something, he played over the few scant minutes he watched, enjoying the show. Yes, he would get that body again and planned to ensure PJ knew he wanted to. It was just a matter of making sure it was done the right way, nothing more.
As dawn began to break, Hedwig sat on her perch, looking smug. Clicking her beak at the two black phoenixes, she let them know she was pleased. The plan had worked just how they wanted and would push this along. Sirius and PJ just needed the right motivation to press this forward and make it grow the right way. The three of them could easily manage doing so, that’s for sure. And she planned to. Yes, it was time ‘her boy’ found love and happiness. Sirius was his perfect match. She just needed for both of them to see it the right way, nothing more.
Eyes going shut, the snowy owl let out a soft sigh then tucked her head down to sleep. Though the two phoenixes were still yammering and plotting, she needed to rest. Let them. When she woke again, they would fill her in then they would go from there.
