Chapter 26
As Remus watched the pale Lucius pace around the room, he then turned back to the other three and shook his head. “Did you get the readings he took?” He asked, not sure what to say or inquire about at this juncture. All he could focus on was what Lucius explained about Horcruxes and feeling mildly ill over the information.
“We have them,” Bill nodded.
“Not like they’ll do us any good,” Sirius snorted, slouching down in his chair, one hand on the upset and stressed Harry’s knee.
“Well, true, but it might give us a few hints as to what we’re dealing with and where it is,” Remus admitted, glancing at Lucius. “Lucius? Do you have anything at the Manor that can help?”
“I’m not sure, but will have the elves look,” Lucius told him, stopping, eyes drifting to Harry’s scar.
“I have no idea where to even start looking,” Bill said, glancing around, arm slipping around Harry’s shoulders, pulling him closer.
“Does the Healer have a plan for this or is it something we need to handle ourselves?” Lucius asked, wanting to know before they started planning for anything.
“He is going to do surgery and remove it,” Sirius told him with a soft sigh. “It’ll be done in his office. He told us he knows how to get rid of it without endangering Harry.”
“He’ll also keep it quiet as it’s covered by Healer/patient confidentiality,” Bill then added.
“When is he tending to it?” Remus asked, pleased this wasn’t something they had to take care of themselves as he wasn’t sure they could find a way without some research that might end up taking months.
“Two weeks from now,” Harry chimed in, still looking rather green at the idea a piece of Voldemort was lodged in his scar. That was an unnerving idea and had him still rather freaked out. “He wants time to double check what he’s doing first before he does it.”
“Good,” Lucius nodded, pleased. Arms still crossed, he sat down by Remus and sighed. Brow furrowed, he asked, “Does anyone else have the feeling Albus might know about this and it factors into whatever he’s plotting? I know it sounds rather paranoid of me, but I’m sure he knows something here.”
After glancing at Bill and Harry, both of whom looked at him as well, Sirius then sighed and admitted, “It was our first thought as well. With some of what Harry’s told us, we think he knows plenty about it. What he knows that we don’t—well, no clue there. Sure it’s involved, though.”
“Which means we need to figure out what he knows,” Remus said with a morose sigh, shaking his head.
“And, again, I’m sure Severus is the key,” Lucius tossed out there, looking around. “He had to have even hints that we can use. The more we know, the better we’ll end up.”
“Lucius and I will tend to communicating with Fred and George the urgency of pressing as fast as they can,” Remus said before anyone else said anything. “We need what it is, more than ever.”
“We do,” Bill agreed with a nod, arm still around Harry, holding him tighter. “We’ll focus on plans for getting us out and press on as fast as we can so we’re ready.”
“Good plan,” Lucius said, slouching down, brow furrowed. “We’ll help all we can and worry about the other issues. You just do what we you need to.”
When the other three agreed, Remus asked, “What else did they find? Is the disease starting to migrate?”
“They think he’s good for now and it’s trapped in his hand,” Sirius explained. “He did say that we can expect it to keep migrating, but there are better treatments now.”
“He told me that they can minimize the pain and trap it easily so I can live a full life with minimal problems,” Harry chimed in. “If the pain comes back, they can easily shift the potions to others. While I’ll eventually have problems, like with using the wand, I should do fine.”
“Which is good,” Remus nodded with a smile for the teen. He then began asking for details, hoping to get off the topic of the Horcrux so the three could calm down. Of course, he and Lucius would discuss it after they left, though he doubted they would sort through everything tonight.
Once the three left, Remus flopped in bed by Lucius. It was well after the time they normally went to bed, but he found himself wide awake still. The information they heard bothered him greatly. With a sigh, he said, “I don’t like this, Lucius, at all.”
“Nor do I,” Lucius admitted, leaning against Remus and finding the sweet spot on the mattress. “It’s decidedly dung smelling and Albus is involved. In my mind, there is no doubt he knows plenty on the topic. I’m also sure whatever plans he has for Harry comes from this tidbit of information.”
“Oh yes,” Remus told him, a sour look on his face. “And I think Harry is in extreme danger from it. How? That I don’t know, but I think it’s there.”
“I do agree,” Lucius nodded. “Let me see what the elves can find on the topic, if anything, then we’ll see what it says. If we can find something on the subject, we might be able to sort out what Albus might have up his sleeve. Then we need to focus on getting what Severus knows. And we need that prophecy. I’m sure it’s interwoven in this mess.”
“So am I,” Remus grumbled, slouching down and leaning against Lucius. However, he didn’t want to deal with it anymore tonight. It was best to let it rest for the night so they might see it more clearly the next day.
Rolling over, he draped an arm over Lucius and gave him a squeeze. He then leaned over and kissed Lucius softly. While this wasn’t what he wanted when the bonding happened, he was learning to like it, more than he thought he would. “I think we need to try to sleep,” he said when he broke it off.
“We do,” Lucius nodded, smiling, loving the way the kiss felt. Leaning forward, he kissed Remus again then extinguished the lights and curled up to Remus, eyes sliding shut.
Arm around Lucius, Remus held him close and shut his own eyes. As he lay there holding Lucius, he felt content and at ease.
As he flipped through the book on dragons, reading relevant parts, Draco leaned against Charlie, who was checking over their gear to ensure they were good, he smiled. Yes, dragons were his future. They appealed to him in ways he couldn’t explain and loved being around them. Though he tried not to, he found himself more focused on the pictures than the texts, running his fingers over the moving pictures, smiling as they shot fake flames and tried to bite him.
Though it was hard, he drew his eyes away from the dragon and read the text there. When he finished, he nudged Charlie and said, “I have a question about what’s written here.”
“What do you want to know?” Charlie asked, stopping what he was doing and leaning over to look at what Draco was reading.
After quickly explaining the question, Draco then looked at Charlie and waited for an answer.
Charlie understood what Draco wanted to know and nodded then explained it in a better way, eyes drifting to the moving picture of the dragon. Even after all these years, he felt drawn to the pictures like he had when still in school and had just discovered them.
Understanding, Draco nodded then grinning. “They are fascinating! Don’t know why I didn’t notice before.”
“I don’t think anyone does just from books,” Charlie said, going back to checking their gear. “While the younger kids like them from books, you only get hooked after seeing them live for the first time. Then there is no going back. We’ve all noticed that you get hooked at first sight with them. You can tell when someone finds the passion for them the first time they see them. If they don’t react that way, they don’t get involved.”
“That’s how I became hooked,” Draco admitted with a grin. “There was something about seeing them like that and up close the first time that did it.”
“It’s not only something you’ll remember for the rest of your life, but starts you down a path you love,” Charlie nodded. “I can still remember seeing one for the first time. Rather than a reserve, I saw one at school. Was just a juvenile that found its way into the Forbidden Forest, but that was all it took for me. I knew then this was the path I wanted to take.”
“I completely understand,” Draco admitted with a small grin, eyes drifting back to the pages and the pictures of the dragons. Yes, he loved this.
When he felt Draco crawl into bed, Charlie let out a contented sigh. While he couldn’t pinpoint the time when this became the norm and he started to like it, it was there. As Draco shifted around to find the most comfortable spot, Charlie flopped onto his side then curled up to the younger man, arm slipping around him.
Content and happy, Draco quickly found the best spot then relaxed and leaned into Charlie’s body heat with a soft sigh. Eyes sliding shut, he rested his head on one of Charlie’s shoulders. He wasn’t sure why, but curling up like this to Charlie relaxed him more than anything else and made him feel good. Unlike so many times, he wouldn’t question it, assuming it was something to do with the bond, and go with it.
Charlie then pressed tighter to Draco. Looking down at the other man, he smiled just a little. Since they found common ground, things were going better. No, they still didn’t have the tether like some of the others, but it was getting better. The better it became, the more he liked it, honestly. There was a contentment there he adored even if he couldn’t understand it. Unlike some, he didn’t over think such matters, just going with them.
As he continued to look down at Draco, who was obviously very relaxed and comfortable, an impulse took over. Like most times, he didn’t think about it and just went with it. Leaning down, he put a hand behind Draco’s head then pulled him into a brief kiss. No, it wasn’t something long and overly passionate, but brief and fulfilling.
Though Draco was stunned by the kiss, he didn’t pull away. Instead, he relished in the feelings it produced, loving them. One trembling hand slipped up and rested on the back of Charlie’s head, holding him there, fingers entwining in his hair. The hair on his body standing on end, he shivered a little at the riot of feelings the simple kiss produced.
Charlie, too, was feeling plenty of good things from the kiss. It felt amazing and unlike the feelings he had ever experienced before with anyone. However, he broke it off very quickly. Panting heavily, skin flushed, he then grinned at Draco. “That was nice.” He admitted, voice slightly husky.
“It was,” Draco admitted, shaking slightly, adoring the sensations still.
“We might have to do it again,” Charlie muttered as he pulled Draco closer, eyes sliding shut.
“I’d like that,” Draco said softly, the hand behind Charlie’s head sliding down to his back. He just rested it there, feeling the heat radiating from Charlie. His own eyes going shut, he wasn’t sure if he could sleep now as he focused on the kiss, wanting more. He would try, though.
With a heavy sigh, Severus looked between the twins. They were discussing the talk he wanted to have with the two, but they were asking about something he wasn’t sure he wanted to give up. There were areas in his life he didn’t want to discuss and what they wanted were those areas. The rub then came that they weren’t willing to talk without being allowed to ask what they wanted. He understood, of course, and assumed they had their own agenda like he did, but it didn’t make it any less frustrating. Now he had to decide if giving up so much was worth it.
Honestly? He had already decided he would, but was trying to negotiate what he would give up. All he hoped was he could keep some of it to himself and figure out why they wanted some of what they did. Sure, part was just so they knew, but he figured there was more. He just didn’t know what and wanted to, as he was certain it was something which would affect him heavily. As he looked at the two, arms folded over his chest, he grumbled internally. Finally, he said, “I’m not willing to give up anything too personal.”
“Yet that’s what you’re asking from us,” Fred told him.
“As plenty of what you want is rooted in very personal areas,” George added.
“What’s good for the goose...” they then said together.
“Understood,” Severus said grudgingly, knowing he wouldn’t get his way. “What if I said that what I’m curious about could help a lot of other areas as I know plenty about the whole situation most don’t?”
“Still the same thing,” George told him.
“What we know relates to plenty as well,” Fred said. He was sure he and George could get what they needed if Severus was willing to even consider talking about this, but it would take time and wiggling. Then came the hard part; allowing them to tell the others.
“I don’t think you understand how serious some of this might end up and what it can involve,” Severus grumbled, shaking his head.
“We’re not stupid,” Fred snorted.
“If you’re asking, it means we know something you need to put something together,” George sighed.
“We might not be known for being serious, but we’re not dumb,” Fred told him, folding his arms over his chest.
“And we know plenty which can help you,” George tossed out there. “And what you know can help us put together what we know or suspect.”
That stopped Severus cold and he looked between the two. What did they mean by that? Was there something they were trying to figure out as well? He didn’t know. “What are you trying to figure out?” He asked though was certain of the answer.
“We’re not talking,” Fred said with a shake of his head.
“You put that spell on us and answer our questions then we’ll give it up. Providing you do the same with us,” George said, looking intently at him.
One hand scrubbing over his face, Severus let out a loud groan then shook his head. He was getting nowhere here.
“What does it matter what we know?” Fred asked, curious. “It’s not like we can say anything and any fight over it will end up with us right back where we were before with the tether.”
“He’s right,” George nodded. Then he waited.
“As I’m sure you know, there are things in one’s life, choices you made especially when young, you regret and don’t want to discuss,” Severus grumbled, looking down.
“True,” George admitted softly.
“Not wanting to go into those unless it relates to topics we want to know about,” Fred assured him.
“This isn’t to pick on or humiliate you,” George added. “We just want information that can help us figure some areas out.”
“Honestly? It might be the same areas you’re working on,” Fred told him, hoping that would help.
Brow furrowed as he thought it over, Severus then gave a slow nod. “It may well be or end up related.” Then, with a heavy sigh, he added, “Give me a day to think it over. If I decide to, we’ll hole up tomorrow night and talk things out.” Really, he had already decided to do so, he just wanted the time to come to terms with his choice and figure out best how to go about it, nothing more.
“We can,” George told him, trying to conceal a grin.
“In your own time,” Fred said, also trying not to grin and glance at his brother. If Severus would talk, he was sure they could get him to allow them to tell the others if they could prove how related it was and bad. Just so they got that far, they could manage with the rest, no problem.
After flopping down in his chair, Severus groaned softly, wondering just what he was getting himself into.
About midnight, Severus woke up drenched in sweat, shivering, and panting from an all too real nightmare. Glancing around, trying to calm himself down, he felt the twins press tighter to him on each side, their arms flopping over his back. To him, it felt almost like they were trying to comfort him in some way. Even stranger was it worked. He felt better at their touch and the imagery seemed to fade along with the terror from it.
Head flopping back down on his pillow, he let out a soft groan and his eyes drifted shut again. Wiggling around to get comfortable, he sighed softly. Most times it took him plenty of time to go back to sleep after such nightmares, sometimes even a potion to help him sleep. This time, though, he felt like he could drift right back off and planned to try.
As he lay there, he felt the two shift closer to him, pressing tightly to his sides. With a grunt, he let out a deep breath then began to drift back off again.
Bill didn’t finish what he was saying to Sirius and looked down at Harry as he grumbled and shifted in his sleep. They were in bed and Harry had fallen asleep after their normal good night kissing, which ended up plenty passionate tonight. Unlike normal, he and Sirius just couldn’t fall asleep after what they learned at the Healer. Harry, too, was plenty upset, but he was so tired he fell asleep while they were talking.
When Harry didn’t wake up, Bill told Sirius, keeping his voice down so he didn’t disturb the sleeping teen, “Not sure about you, but I want out before the beginning of school. Don’t care what we learn or still have to figure out, I want out of here. The more we learn, the more I don’t want to stick around. While I want as much as we can get, I don’t think it’s wise to stay too long, Sirius.”
“I agree there,” Sirius grunted, looking sour. “Don’t like any of this shit and want gone. There are items we need in place before we can manage, though. Those we’re working on. It just takes time.”
“If we didn’t have to wait for some of it, I’d have us take off tomorrow.” Bill grumbled, shaking his head.
“We need some of the information, though,” Sirius pointed out. “If we don’t have it, we’re apt to end up in the middle of a nightmare we had no idea was coming. Especially when it comes to Albus.”
“True,” Bill conceded with a reluctant nod. Eyes flitting down to the sleeping Harry, he added, “I just don’t want him overly stressed or end up tricked into something.” Stopping, he thought it over then added, voice quiet, “Or when mum and the others end up making another reappearance. That’s coming, I can guarantee it. While Harry might not want to repeat what happened, I’m sure they’ll push him there because Mum cannot handle what happened. I’m sure by now she’s convinced herself and the others in the house besides Dad that I’ve been molesting Harry. If anyone brings it up to him that way, he’ll blow.”
“We’ve got her locked out,” Sirius said, brow furrowed. “If we stay in the house, she can’t get in.”
“She’ll find a way, Sirius, trust me,” Bill sighed, shaking his head. “If not here, she’ll find us somewhere. It might sound paranoid, but I know Mum.”
“Oh, I believe you,” Sirius told him. “With all you’ve gone through, I’m sure it’s there and won’t go away. We’ll just do all we can to make sure she’s not around.”
“It won’t stop her, trust me. She always finds a way, Sirius,” Bill told him, sliding down and curling up to Harry’s side. “Probably more so this time than ever before. I’m damned sure she’s devising ways to get to us because we stood up to her and exposed plenty. Not to mention all Harry said. She’ll want to get him back in her good graces then take out her anger on the rest of us.”
“She won’t get her way this time,” Sirius snorted, sliding down himself and curling up to Harry’s other side. “It’s more than just you lot involved. The rest of us won’t put up with her shit. It’s something she has to know.”
“She’s still going to try, I can guarantee that,” Bill told him with a short shake of his head. “She thinks she can make all of you cow down to her like she does with so many. It’ll factor in as well.”
“She can try,” Sirius grinned. “Won’t work with those involved. We’re all strong enough personalities that she won’t get anywhere.”
“Doesn’t mean she won’t try,” Bill sighed, eyes going shut. “It’s more the fallout I’m worried about. Last time was bad enough. The next will end up worse. And what might come from it isn’t something I want to deal with.”
“True,” Sirius admitted, eyes drifting shut as well. “We won’t worry about it now. Unlike last time, we have plans in place and will use them. If it doesn’t work—we’ll deal as it comes.” Then he sighed deeply and told Bill, “Let’s get some rest. Worrying about it now won’t do any good.”
“I agree,” Bill nodded, arm draping over Harry. However, he was troubled as he had a deep foreboding feeling about this. And he couldn’t shake it. He’d try, though, as sleep was needed.
