Once the room had emptied, a rustle of sound drew their eyes to him. Ardyn sat back in his chair, a speculative look in his hazel eyes as he looked from Roark, to Harry, then back again, studying them both.
"What?" Roark asked, unaccountably annoyed by the studying gaze he was giving him.
"Nothing, just that you handled things very well," he answered calmly. "I don't think I've ever seen any of them look so surprised, nor as set back on their heels as they just were."
"Especially by a seventeen yahren {year} old, inexperienced boy?" he asked with an arched brow.
"Don't put words in my mouth, Roark. That is not what I said."
"Not in so many words anyway," Desmond said, a frown beginning to form on his brow as he turned his chair to look at him.
"But the intent to say them was present," Jordan said as his fingers formed a peak under his chin, dark green eyes locked on Ardyn as he relaxed back into his chair, or so it seemed anyway.
Tyler raised a hand to stop him from speaking what he was about to say in answer to that. "It's in your tone of voice, Ardyn," he said, as he too seemed relaxed as he sat back in his chair. "You still don't want them to be here."
"So, tell us, Ardyn, just WHAT, exactly, is your problem with Harry and Roark being here?"
"Well, it is, after all, true," Roark interrupted. "I AM seventeen, and Harry just turned twenty-one last sectar {month}. We are, as far as I know, the youngest Warriors to have ever been recruited into Counter-Intelligence. Also, compared to some of you, and to many others in the service, we are very inexperienced. There are more than a few who believe that your father, uncle, and brothers have all lost their minds...that they moved way too soon to acquire us."
"Personally," Jordan gave him an amused glance, "I don't think they moved fast enough."
"Agreed. They should have snatched the two of you up as soon as you graduated. That way they could have been training you on Virgon."
"As Counter-Intelligence hadn't been asked to take over yet when either of you had shipped out, they couldn't," Alexei said with a grin, completely agreeing with his cousins on their assessment.
"Um..." came from the both of them.
"WHAT," Desmond demanded of them, "is THAT supposed to mean?"
Matching grins were turned on him. "Never stopped them before," came Jordan's answer.
Roark had to chuckle as he shook his head. "Many ALSO believe," he began, "that the real reason we are where we are is not because of our own work, but because we are Commander James Peverell Potter's sons, Commander Jacob Adama's grandsons. Isn't that right, Captain?"
Snorts from the Durins as Ardyn spoke, "Roark, I know that you and Harry did not get where you are now because you were James' sons or Adama's grandsons. I know just how hard you both worked to get where you are now, from the moment you entered the Academy."
"Really?" came Harry's sarcastic question. "Yet you are still so damned determined to get us off Aquaria. Why, I wonder, is that, Ardyn?"
"As do we," Desmond growled, eyeing him narrowly.
"You should be made aware," Alexei began coolly, "that Raphael and Schyler were both just about ready to drop everything and come here after your call the day they arrived here. They were both very...annoyed by your attitude."
"To say the least," Tyler said. "They want answers as to what your problem is. Why you are so determined to get rid of them."
"Then, of course, we have Uncle Roark and Uncle Thorin," Jordan said coolly.
"Who by the way, have complete faith in the both of them, followed very closely by Dacian and Gabriel. YOU, Ardyn, have managed rather successfully to piss off all five heads of the C.C.I.U. NOT, exactly, the smartest thing to do if you were to ask me."
"As we had finished our assignments, Dad and Uncle Thorin decided very quickly to send us here to back the boys up as was needed," Desmond said. "We also promised them we'd get the answers they so badly want. So, once again, Ardyn. Just what is your problem with having Harry and Roark here?"
Roark sat back in his chair, silver eyes locked on Ardyn, a smirk twisting his lips suddenly, his arms crossing over his chest. "So, Ardyn, how was Grandfather?"
Ardyn started in surprise, looking over at him. "How did you know I talked to your grandfather?"
"Why wouldn't you?" Harry asked.
Roark shrugged. "There are many things that I know that others don't think that I do. It's part of how I made it through the Academy, as much as working extremely hard. Harder than anyone else ever expected me to."
Several snorts sounded again from the Durin brothers and cousins. "Only by those who don't know you. You and Harry were the brightest, hardest working cadets the Academy had seen in a very long time," Alexei said, clear affection in his tone, blue eyes not moving from Ardyn for a micron {second}, continuing to him.
