Sebastien sat forward, his gaze intent on Roark's face. "You are our long lost missing baby brother."
"And our cousin," came from the cousins as one.
"My nephew," Thorin breathed, looking like he wanted nothing more than to jump up, cross the space between them, and yank him into his arms, but it was the warning look from Severus and Sebastien that prevented him from doing so, especially as it reminded him Roark was still healing.
"You are the son Selina and I adored from the moment we knew we had conceived you," came the whisper from Roark Sr.
Roark had frozen the moment the announcement was made, shock, disbelief, and amazement all reflected in his silver eyes. His face was white as he looked around the room at the Durin's gathered there, before finally falling on the man who had just been named as his father.
"But...WHY? Why such a secret? Why did neither of you say anything to ANYONE?!"
Roark moved then, getting to his feet with a swiftness he had not shown since the Cylon attack that had broken his back in two places. He crossed the floor to him to kneel before him, his hands coming up to curl around Roark's.
"That was mostly my fault. Selina and I talked about it and decided that until I had a chance to talk to my family, as well as those of High Command, it was better to leave my name off your birth record. I could be added at a later date. I knew, because you had been born on Leo...your mother was Leon...I was going to need permission to bring you both to Caprica. On the morning of the attack, I was off duty, as Selina had just given birth to you a bare few days before. I was spending all of my spare time with the two of you. Danner, my second in Command, called down to inform me he had picked up a Cylon Basestar just outside the gravitational orbit of Leo's biggest moon, Mella.
"It was your mother who all but ordered me to go to the Leon Military Compound. Said the two of you would be just fine. I kissed you both and left, hurrying to the Base. I honestly had no idea what had happened to either you or your mother, my Rory. As you are aware, the attack was swift and decisive, destroying nearly all of the main City of Leo. I was critically injured in that attack, breaking my back in two places, as well as having many other severe injuries."
"The last time Dad and I had spoken," Dacian spoke up then, "it was the day before the attack. I remember thinking he looked so God-damned HAPPY! Happier than I could ever remember him looking since our mother's death just centons after Logan and Chris had been born. He said, when I asked him about it, that he had met the most stunningly beautiful young woman in the Galaxy. It had been just over a yahren...that over that time they had fallen very deeply in love, and that you had been conceived."
"He said he hadn't told us about either of you because he was worried about our reaction to you...to having another woman in his life, and a new baby on the way," Gabriel turned his head to smirk at his father, then back at Roark. "WE, of course, proceeded to call him a few choice names for even DARING to think...to believe that we, his children, would ever be so petty as to deny him happiness with anyone else."
"We also made it very clear," Alexei picked up just then, "that he had better be thinking of bringing the two of you home once he had been relieved of his duty there or there were going to be consequences. We had all laughed, Dad, telling us that had already been his intent as soon as the Solarian was relieved of her duty rotation. He had been called away just then, so he never got around to telling us her name. Then just a few days after you were born, the Cylons attacked."
Raphael shook his head. "That attack destroyed so much of Leo's Capitol...destroyed thousands of lives, including ours," he broke off, shaking his head. "That woman that loved Dad so much...that beautiful baby boy they had conceived together--"
"Me." Tears were suddenly in his eyes, blurring his vision as he looked around at them.
"Yes, Roark, YOU. As soon as we were told that there had been a devastating attack on Leo...that the Solarian had gone head to head with the Basestar...that Dad was in the Leon Life Center with injuries none of us knew if he would survive from..." he stopped, shook his dark head. "We couldn't ask him about you, or about your mother, because he was in a coma when we arrived, and we didn't even know where to begin to look for you, though that is not to say that we still did not try."
"Once Dad was awake...he was completely immobilized...very slow to talk. He told us where the three of you had been living at the time of the attack..." Dacian picked up again, "But when we got there...We discovered the building had taken a direct hit, and had collapsed. We found Selina on the rolls of the deceased, but you...YOU Roark, were not on the rolls. Somehow...someway, you had survived."
"With no clear idea who your father was, you were turned over to Selina's sister as she was next of kin. We spent the next three sectons looking for her, but we never were able to find her."
"We were finally forced," Thorin said quietly, "to give up our search when we were ordered to return to Caprica once it was safe for Roark to travel. We were absolutely devastated, Roark. We KNEW you were alive, that you were out there somewhere...we just had no idea where...or even where to begin to look for you."
Roark reached up then, slid his fingers reverently over his youngest son's face, wiping away his tears as they slowly rolled down his cheeks. "And all this time...ALL this FUCKING time, you were right beneath my nose."
He looked up at him then, his tears coming harder...faster. "I think...I knew," he said, his voice choked. "The very first moment Harry and I stepped into this house...it felt like...I don't know exactly, but it felt like I had come HOME somehow, but I was barely five...I just didn't understand why I felt so...and I certainly couldn't EXPLAIN it. On the nights you, Raiden, Kendric, and Thorin held story nights...telling us about the ancient Home World of Kobol...Oh, GODS!" he turned suddenly into Rodolphus' arms and felt them closing around him, his body shuddering deeply.
That was when Harry moved. Getting to his feet, he hurried to sit down beside him, to wrap his arms around him. "Rory," he breathed.
"Shh...easy now, darling," Rodolphus spoke up in a deep, calming voice, his hands beginning to move slowly over his back. Roark's fire and shadow magic, ever insidious, extremely protective began to swirl around them as if it thought there was a threat, and Harry's was beginning to react protectively to keep Roark from doing something completely stupid by accident.
Rabastan got to his feet, moving up to wrap his arms slowly around their shoulders so as not to set off Roark's shadow magic. : Come on now...both of you have got to calm down. It's going to be alright. You all know the truth, now. You can move on from here. Calm your magic, little cousin, before you set the house on fire. :
"And think about this now, Rory. We know the truth at last as to why you always felt the way you did as soon as you entered this house. Always nearly driving us both crazy trying to figure out why this place felt so much like home to you. It's going to be alright now, little brother."
"Harry," he drew his face from Rodolphus' neck, turning his head to look at his brother, seeing his deep concern, silver and emerald eyes meeting.
"You are, Roark Christopher, my brother, and you will always BE my brother, so you stop that right now. I never...not EVER cared that you were adopted. The moment Mum and Dad brought you home...laid you in my arms...the very first time I ever fed you...You were...You ARE my beloved baby brother, and I love you."
