The rest of the weekend went by uneventfully. Matt and Hermione spent it cuddled together either on a couch in the common room or on the floor by the fire. The pair either were sharing a book and reading it together or they would each have their own. Often between chapters, the couple would discuss what they were reading, especially if they were sharing the book.
“Look at them.” Ginny said to Neville that evening.
“What about them?” Neville asked, following her gaze.
“They’re so content with each other. It was never this quiet in the common room when Harry and Ron were here, was it?”
“Hm, no it wasn’t. But then again, Harry was always wrapped up in some new mystery, wasn’t he? Now it’s kind of nice having him as a teacher and no more Voldemort.” Neville replied.
“They’re so cute!” Ginny whispered. She watched as Matt shifted and Hermione closed the book they were sharing. He leaned on her as he rolled up onto the couch and laid down, his head in her lap. Ginny caught a smile on Hermione’s lips as Matt reached down to the floor and pulled up a different tome to read.
“They do seem to get along better than she and Ron ever did.” Neville observed.
“Told you!” Ginny smirked, happy to see her closest friend happier than she had been in an extraordinarily long time.
The following week Matt and Hermione were in the Great Hall, with Ginny and Neville. The owl post arrived, and Matt was surprised to see he had a letter. Hermione had one identical to his as well. In addition to several more.
“Hermione, what on earth is this?” Matt asked, confused.
“It’s a letter.” Hermione replied, reading over her own mail. She sighed as she drew out a quill from her bag and began to fill out a reply.
“I know that! I mean, what’s the ‘Slug Club’?”
“Oh! Professor Slughorn must want you to come to one of his parties. I’ve got one as well. He’s…fond of…” Hermione began to explain.
“Fond of what?” Matt asked.
“Well…you see…he tends to gather, er, talented students. He kind of…collects them.” She did not want to make it sound weird.
“Collects them?” Matt wanted clarification.
“Yes…oh…please don’t think poorly of him. He just likes to rub elbows with talented and well-connected students. Helps them make connections and hopes that they’ll do him favors once they become famous or popular.” Hermione explained.
“Ah. I see. He wants to get to know me better?” Matt’s voice was laced with skepticism.
“Probably. Once we’re sure you’re, you know, not in any danger, I’m sure there’ll be a lot of talk about you. Hogwarts has never had an American student before. That’s certainly enough to put you on his radar.”
“You’d think there was already enough talk about me, with that damned article in the Daily Prophet last month…”
“And the intrigue as already died down. They’re not even mentioning you anymore. It looks like it was just a one-off instance.” Hermione said.
“A flash in the pan?” Matt asked and got an enthusiastic nod from Hermione. He seemed to relax and decided that he would go with her to the next Slug Club party.
“I’m only going because you’re going to be there.” Matt told her as they walked to their first class.
“Can’t be seen without your girlfriend, is that it?” Hermione asked with amusement in her voice.
“More like I need my beautiful girlfriend for moral support.” Matt replied looking exasperated. Hermione giggled.
“Mr. Santini, you call this acceptable work?” Professor Sharp asked as he strode between the desks.
“Sir, this is only my second attempt, it’s –“ Matt replied.
“It should be well within your talent range to get it within the first attempt! This is pathetic. Perhaps some additional homework will aid you in remembering what you are doing!” Sharp practically shouted. “And Miss Granger, why are you letting your,” Sharp paused, he looked at Matt with an expression of either contempt, disgust, or both. “Boyfriend, fall behind?” He practically spat the last few words at her.
“Please, sir, I am doing all I can –“ Hermione began.
“Are you really? Perhaps I should start handing detentions out to the both of you, for substandard work. Then maybe you would have time to think about what spells you are actually doing!” Sharp threatened. “I want to three feet of parchment from the two of you, by next class, on the spells we’re doing and where you could possibly have gone wrong. And if they’re at all substandard, you’ll both be cleaning bedpans in the Hospital Wing for a month!”
As class ended and everyone shuffled out Matt looked drained. Hermione had done better and had mastered the transfiguration by the end of the class. Matt had as well, but it was only on his final attempt that he got it right. Sharp had missed his last second mastery as he was collecting the other students work.
“Hermione, this is getting ridiculous.” Matt said as they entered the Great Hall.
“I know it is. This is the absolute worst I’ve ever seen from a teacher. And we were taught by Death Eaters, twice!” Hermione said as she sat down beside him.
As they ate and talked with each other, Ginny, and Neville, more mail owls arrived.
“God, Hermione, the only person who gets as much mail as you is Parkinson. And that’s saying something. She’s constantly going to the owlery or literally sending letters back with the ones that come in the morning, afternoon, and evening!” Matt teased gently.
“I happen to be a terribly busy woman, thank you. I’ve a lot going on just now.” Hermione said with a forced haughtiness in her voice. Matt grinned at her, and Hermione laughed. Ginny rolled her eyes with a grin and Neville chuckled, all of them knew Hermione never thought of herself as that self-important. Hermione scribbled something on the piece of parchment the owl brought and quickly returned it. The owl flew off to deliver whatever her response was.
“On a serious note, do I get to know what all the letter writing and responding is all about?” Matt asked.
“You will. Just not yet.” Hermione cryptically responded.
“Another mystery!” Matt said playfully and resumed eating.
“We should get to the library.” Hermione said as she finished her food. Matt let out an exasperated sigh.
“I guess.” He said and stood with her.
“Good luck! I hope you get all your transfiguration work done!” Ginny said, a slight sound of pity in her voice as the couple left.
The following Monday the morning paper arrived at breakfast. Matt pulled the Daily Prophet out and looked shocked.
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley to be Honored
Second Wizarding War heroes and heroine, Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger are set to receive the highly prestigious honor of Order of Merlin First Class from the Minister of Magic, Kingsley Shacklebolt. The Hogwarts Golden Trio fought valiantly during the culmination of what has come to be known as the Second Wizarding War. The three were instrumental in the defeat of the dark wizard Tom Riddle otherwise known as Lord Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters. While some of Voldemort’s elite henchmen have managed to evade capture, most have either been caught and sent to Azkaban Prison or died during the war. Notably, Hermione Granger was instrumental, while not solely responsible, for the takedown of one of Voldemort’s largest and most powerful supporters, Bellatrix Lestrange. Ron Weasley himself was responsible for the downfall of the infamous Fenrir Greyback, avenging his first love Lavender Brown and his brother William who was savaged by Greyback a year prior to what has come to be known as The Battle of Hogwarts. Harry Potter, of course, was responsible for the downfall of Lord Voldemort, managing to send his own Killing Curse back at him for a second and permanent time.
In addition, it has come to light that prior to the Battle of Hogwarts, these three heroes had set out on an epic quest to destabilize Voldemort. The Golden Trio spent much of the year following the death of Hogwarts esteemed Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, searching for five dark objects known as Horcruxes. These objects were said to hold parts of Voldemort’s very own soul. Once the Golden Trio located them, they were able to destroy these dark artifacts, the very keys to Voldemort’s longevity and his inevitable return. Thankfully, with these objects vanquished, this allowed Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger to fulfill their ultimate destinies and stop Voldemort’s reign of terror on our world once and for all.
Given the light of these circumstances, it is truly clear that all three deserve the highest commendations possible for their triumphs and success during the war. Were it not for them, our world would not know the lasting peace it will be able to enjoy for generations to come.
“Hermione…” Matt started, looking over at her.
“What?” she looked wide eyed, staring straight ahead, knowing he had just read the article too. She had no idea they were going to put so much detail into it.
“That was an interesting read.” Neville interjected, before Matt could reply. “They left out all the good stuff though, like how we all helped you and how you guys were on the run and tortured.” Hermione shot Neville a look that could kill.
“You got some ‘splainin’ to do.” Matt said, using a very forced and fake Spanish accent, turning fully to look at his girlfriend, then to Neville, then back. “Lots, a ‘splainin’!”
“I’ve just remembered, I’ve forgotten something in my dorm, see you later!” Hermione said getting up in a rush and quickly dashing out of the Great Hall.
“Hey wait! Come back!” Matt said as he tried to follow her.
“I don’t think she’s told him everything.” Neville observed.
“Really? Do you suppose so?” Ginny replied acidly. She got up and moved over to the staff table.
“Professor Potter.” Ginny said addressing her boyfriend.
“Yes, Ms. Weasley.” Harry replied with a slight playful grin and tone.
“Congratulations!” she said and leaned over to kiss his cheek when no one was looking. “If you can sneak away for a few, there might be some more where that came from.” She whispered and gave him a wink before leaving the Great Hall herself. Harry looked over to Neville who came up to offer his own congratulations as well. Harry smiled at his friend and wondered why Hermione had so obviously not told Matt what had happened to them during the war. He sighed and hoped Matt would be understanding of her.
