Chapter 24: The Matchmaker’s
Dilemma
December 2nd
“I just don’t understand it, Draco,” Harry
said softly to his mate. “They were
getting on so well at the ball end then it all seemed to fall apart. I thought they were both really trying for a
while there and then it all blew up and I seem to have missed the
explosion. And now they’re both looking
so ragged and tired. Sirius is angry all
the time and doesn’t speak with anyone but Remus and Severus. He doesn’t even look at you and I any more. Eris
looks dead on her feet most of the time.”
“Of course she does,” Draco said with a shake
of her head. “He’s her mate! They need each other to survive. They need each other to be happy and by
rejecting one another they’re wasting away.”
“I’m starting to think its time for us to step
in, Dray,” Harry said firmly. “We’ve
left it alone for too long probably. If
Sirius knew the truth…”
“It wouldn’t change a thing because Eris’
opinion would remain the same,” Draco spat.
“We swore to keep quiet, Harry.
Maybe we never should have, but we did.
She’s been betrayed too many times already.”
Harry took his mate’s face in his
hands. “And if they go insane or die
because we wanted to do the “honorable” thing…then what? Do we just shrug and say that there was
nothing to be done?”
Harry searched Draco’s eyes. He knew that his mate took his loyalty to
Eris very seriously. He’d known it since
that first moment the blond had woken in the infirmary months earlier and sworn
that he would follow Eris’ lead. Draco
pulled Harry into his arms. They’d been
becoming physically closer with each day and Harry knew that Draco was becoming
a bit frustrated with making due with hugs and kisses. So was he if he was honest with himself. At this point he was really only holding back
to try and make Sirius and Eris feel better, but maybe that was the wrong
approach. Maybe Eris would do better
with an example of how good just letting go could turn out.
He pulled back and kissed Draco
deeply. When he pulled away the fire in
Draco’s eyes sent a chill through him.
“Perhaps we should set a better example.”
“Perhaps we should,” Draco said softly. “But only if you’re really ready.”
“I’ve waited too long for this already.” Harry pulled away from Draco. “Unfortunately, this will have to wait until
after we’ve finished our classes for the day.”
“Very well. Shall we head for Herbology
then?”
“Lead the way, love,” Harry said with flourish.
They’d
made it out onto the grounds when a group of seventh year Slytherins came close
to them. Pansy Parkinson was with them
and immediately hung herself on Draco.
“Draco, I’ve missed you down in the dungeons. Why don’t you ditch Potter and sit with me
today?”
Then the
bitch brushed a kiss on Draco’s cheek.
That snapped what little control Harry had. “Get your hands off my mate you filthy piece
of trash.”
Pansy and the other Slytherins
seemed too stunned to respond and quickly moved on their way. Draco turned amused eyes on him then. “Not that I’m not grateful, love, but I’d say
you blew our cover.”
Harry felt a momentary burst of
panic which he quickly suppressed. All
or nothing was the way he planned to go at this point. “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.”
They laughed the rest of the way
to class, both looking forward to the evening they planned to spend together.

Eris sat poking at her lunch, not
really feeling hungry at all. Someone
sat down beside her and she was afraid to even check to see who it was.
“You know, food does more good on the inside,”
Blaise said cheerfully. “I’ve found that
staring at it doesn’t really do much to sate hunger or absorb nutrients.”
Eris cracked a smile. “I suppose not, but I’m not very hungry.”
Ginny plopped down on her other side
then. “I can think of a few reasons for
that.”
Eris glared at her friend. “None that really matter.”
Ginny rolled her eyes and quickly
threw a bit more food on Eris’ plate.
“You’re going to eat all of that even if I have to miss
Potions to make sure of it.”
Eris sighed and began to dig
in. Severus would never forgive her if
she made anyone skip out on his old class.
Soon Draco, Harry, Greg, Hermione, and Ron were all sitting with
them. Eris surreptitiously looked about
to see if Sirius was in the Great Hall and noticed him sitting quietly by
himself a few tables away. Now why had
everyone decided that she needed company?
Making a decision she knew she’d
regret later, she stood up, taking her plate with her, and marched over to
Sirius’ table, noting that no one protested her departure. Sneaky bastards. She sat down across from Sirius and quickly
began to eat again, sneaking glances at him in between bites. He didn’t seem to be very hungry either.
“I see no one’s ordered you to eat,” she said
conversationally. “Lucky
you. Ginny’s on me right now like
a watch dog.”
Sirius grunted.
Eris sighed. “Maybe you should try a bit of the
chicken. You look a bit ashen. Not sleeping well?”
Grunt.
“I could making you some Dreamless Sleep if
you like,” she offered. “Just a couple
night’s worth so you can rest up.”
“Why do you care,” Sirius said flatly.
Eris blinked back tears and went back to
eating her food, determined to clear her plate and leave nothing for Ginny to
complain about. She glanced up at the
head table and had to do a double take.
Roslyn was sitting there chatting happily with Professor Flitwick and she was glowing a
pleasant rose color. When had any
romance begun to bloom in her teacher’s life?
Had she really become that out of touch with everyone around her? Most importantly, who was the lucky man? She was going to have to figure this one out.
“Found something interesting,” Sirius asked
quietly.
Eris’ momentary happiness was shattered. What kind of matchmaker could she possibly be
when she couldn’t even make her own predestined relationship work out? “No, not really…I just…Ros
is glowing.”
“Really? Lucky her,” Sirius said with a wan smile.
“Wonder who the bloke is.”
“I’m sure I’ll figure it out soon enough,”
Eris said, poking at the last of her peas.
She pushed her plate away and rose to her feet. She had the rest of the day free and planned
to spend it in the library studying.
“Later.”
“Eris wait,” Sirius said quickly. She gave him and expectant look. “Do you…would you…will you play a game of
chess with me tonight?”
Eris smiled shyly. “I’d like that. But I get Ron whispering advice in my ear.”
“Fine, but I get Draco,” Sirius said with a
mock sigh.
“He’ll have to do.”
Eris left for the library feeling
better than she had for some time. It
was going to be a good night.

December 13th
Sirius and Eris’ game of chess
turned into a nightly activity.
Sometimes the others would join in and cheer either one of them on and
sometimes they were given the common room to themselves to play in silence. Eris claimed she had discovered the identity
of Roslyn’s match, but she refused to fess up to who
it was, choosing instead to giggle madly whenever the subject was
breached. As they sat playing their game
on this evening he found himself gazing at her longingly whenever her focus was
on the chessboard. They were all alone,
with only the crackling fire for noise.
It was quite late and the others were all asleep, except for Snape who
was (as usual) holed up in his lab.
Felicity, the old bird, was rooming with Minerva these days and Eris was
happy for her healthy presence. It was
easy to see that the old woman meant a great deal to Eris. The girl positively glowed when ever her
adoptive grandmother entered the room.
He wanted to make her glow like that.
It was now his one true mission in life.
“You move, Siri,”
Eris said with a smile. “I’ll have you
in four turns I bet.”
“Care to wager on that,” Sirius said with a
sly smile.
Eris pursed her lips. “That depends on what you want as your
prize. I’ll have you know that I’m a
virtuous woman, sir.”
Sirius chuckled. “If I win, I want you to tell me the name of
Roslyn’s match.”
“Fair enough,” Eris said cheerfully. “I’ll have them fixed up soon enough if I
could keep them in the same room long enough.”
Sirius leaned across the
board. “And what do you want if you win,
sweetheart?”
Eris looked thoughtful for a
moment and then she blushed. “Do you
promise not to laugh?”
Sirius was intrigued so he immediately
agreed. “May I never taste rum again if
I do anything besides offer you an innocent smile.”
Eris giggled. “Very well, if I win I want you to spend the
rest of the night curled up with me in your animagus
form.”
Sirius only stared blankly at her
for a moment. Then he smiled a sweet,
slow smile. “Perfect. I feel like I’m winning either way.”
“Just don’t throw the game,” Eris said sternly.
“I wouldn’t dream of it…unless of course you
were wagering for a kiss,” Sirius said with a laugh. “I’d run naked through the school if you
promised me that.”
“Promises, promises,” Eris said with a roll of
her eyes. “I’ll remember that the next
time I feel like embarrassing you.”
“On with the game then,” Sirius said with a
wave of his hand. “May the best…er…person win.”
“Or just the luckiest.”
As it
turned out, Eris was able to beat him in three moves. He resigned himself to having to pull his
desired information out of her at a later date.
For now he was getting to spend the night curled up beside the woman he
loved. In the form of a dog or no, he
would enjoy himself.

December 14th
Draco woke with Harry’s head
nestled against his chest. He ached a
bit in pleasant ways and slid slowly out of bed so that he could stretch
out. He’d never slept as well as he had
since he started sleeping in Harry’s bed.
It was as though his mate chased away every demon and nightmare that had
ever kept him wakeful in the past.
Slipping on a pair of trousers and
a t-shirt, Draco made his way out of the boys’ dormitory and into the common
room only to stop dead in his tracks at the sight that awaited him. There, curled up in front of the fire, was
Eris, surrounded by pillows and wrapped snugly in a blanket. That wasn’t the most amazing part of it
however. Snuggled against the witch,
with its head resting in the curve of her side, was a huge, black dog.
Draco was confused for a moment
before his sleep fogged brain finally registered that the dog was Sirius in his
animagus form.
He smiled a smug smile then and tip-toed back up into his dormitory to
wake the other boys. Giving Harry a
shake, he smiled down at his lover’s glazed gaze. “Harry, you have to see this! Get up.”
He moved along until he had woken
Blaise, Ron, and Greg as well and then hurried to wake Hermione and Ginny. Peering down at Granger from the edge of her
bed, Draco wondered at the best route for waking her. Slowly…carefully, he reached out his hand and
gently poked Hermione’s arm with a single finger. She slapped his hand away and mumbled into
her pillow.
Draco sighed and tried to locate
Hermione’s wand before attempting to shake her awake. Having determined that it was not under the
girl’s pillow, he grabbed onto her shoulders and gave her a firm shake. “Granger, you need to wake up and see
something!”
Hermione’s eyes popped open and
Ginny also leapt out of the next bed over, brandishing her slipper like a
wand. “Whoosit?
Draco bit his lip, trying hard not
to burst into laughter as Ginny fully woke up and blushed
a brilliant scarlet when she realized she was holding a slipper. “You two need to come into the common room
and see something.”
Draco slipped back downstairs then
and smiled at the sight of his lover and three dorm mates crouched behind the
couch and peeking out from various places to see Sirius and Eris sleeping
peacefully together. He knelt down
beside Harry with a smile and whispered in his mate’s ear, “Do you think they
bonded?”
Harry shook his head. “We would have probably been woken up. I think you’ll feel the wave of magic too
this time…when they do get around to it that it. I don’t think we could have slept through
it.”
“Why don’t they just get on with it,” Blaise
whispered loudly.
“Because I like to leave you guys in
suspense,” said a voice above them.
Draco and his counterparts looked
up to see Eris leaning over the back of the couch smiling. The blond immediately tried to smooth things
over in his own way. “So are you going
to hurry up and shag him sometime soon?”
Luckily, Eris seemed to be in a
good mood and didn’t hex him immediately.
“Why, tired of my brother already?”
“Oh stuff it you silly chit,” Draco said
playfully.
Eris stuck her tongue out at him
and Draco smiled as Sirius joined her on the couch. His cousin looked extremely pleased with
himself, so Draco hoped that meant progress was being made. “Had a nice night did you?”
“Very,” Sirius said brightly. “How ‘bout yourself?”
“I found myself in a tight place but it all
worked out in the end,” Draco said with a smirk only to have his mate punch him
in the arm.
Everyone
else burst into laughter…except for Ron.
Ron covered his ears and blushed.
“I’m not listening to you two. I
don’t want to hear a word of it. Kiss in
front of me all you want, but I can’t think about my best mate in that
position.”
Harry put on a feigned look of
confusion. “What are you talking about,
Ron?”
“You know,” the redhead said firmly.
“No, I don’t, perhaps you could explain it to
me,” Harry said sweetly..
Ron laughed nervously. “If Draco didn’t explain it to you beforehand
then there’s no helping you.”
Draco stood up and stretched. “Well, who’s up for breakfast?”

December 16th
Remus sat chatting with Felicity
over tea. The old witch seemed as good
as new. It may have taken nearly six
months to get her that way, but everyone knew she was lucky not to be insane or
dead. “How are you holding up with
coming and going between the school and the manor?”
“Oh, its just fine,” Felicity said
happily. “It’s nice to be able to see
Eris so often. With her going to school
in America the
past two years I’ve gotten used to her being out of reach. Of course, I went through all that with
Eileen as well, but Eris is…different some how.”
“She’s a special girl,” Remus said
softly. “You did an amazing job with
her.”
“But I don’t always feel that I’ve done right
by her,” Felicity said with a bit of bite.
“I took Draco away and that didn’t stop Lucius Malfoy from getting a
hold of her. I kept Severus away from
her and that didn’t help either one of them.
I kept her identity a secret even though her parents had been murdered.”
“Those are all things you did because you
thought you were protecting her,” Remus said firmly. “Merlin only knows how bad things could have
gotten if you’d made different choices.”
“Ah yes, choice…an interesting concept,”
Felicity said in a strangely light tone.
Remus smiled.
“And now we’re not talking about Eris anymore.”
Felicity chuckled. “Actually it does to a certain extent. She came and told me an interesting tale the
other day. Apparently, the lovely Miss
Roslyn is showing a visible aura.”
“Really,” Remus said with a frown. He hadn’t realized that Roslyn was interested
in anyone. They’d started out the year
spending a good bit of time together, but since things had become so rocky
between Sirius and Eris he’d only really been seeing her in the classroom. “Who’s the lucky man? Or did the little minx refuse to tell?”
“Oh she told,” Felicity said
mischievously. “I have a feeling that
I’m the only one she’s told. She’s been
dangling the information in front of Sirius for a while now.”
“Maybe its about time
that I had a good talk with Eris,” Remus said thoughtfully. “If she knows something about Roslyn she
should just tell the lady. The poor
thing has too many of her own problems to be worrying about without trying to
work this out.”
“I think she’s actually having fun with
it.” Felicity set her teacup down. “She’s been tearing herself apart trying to
appear close and comfortable, Sirius included, but at the same time she’s
trying to hold herself mentally apart.”
“Well that will never work,” Remus said with a
sad chuckle.
“So maybe you should go talk to her,” Felicity
said.
“Indeed,” Remus said moving to his feet. “But it will have to wait for a while,
because Minerva is sending me out on an…errand.”
“I know, Remus, just take care of yourself,” the old woman said kindly.

December 19th
“She’s worried sick,” Eris wailed sadly,
placing her head on Hermione’s shoulder.
Ginny was pacing in front of her.
“Professor McGonagall said he was only supposed to be gone for a day and
he was supposed to send off a message once his meeting was over.”
“Oh, Eris,” Hermione said softly. “Remus will be fine, you’ll see. This isn’t the first time he’s been sent
out.”
“I should have told them,” Eris cried. “I should have told both Remus and Roslyn
that they were matched before he left.
Maybe he would have stayed.”
“At least you told Roslyn now,” Ginny said,
coming to kneel before the bed.
“What good does it do her now?”
Hermione sighed. “It’s good because now, when Remus comes
back, Roslyn will appreciate what she might have lost and she won’t pussy foot
around. She won’t let Remus take no for
an answer either.”
Their dorm room door burst open
then and Sirius rushed in breathless.
“He’s back! Eris, it’s all
okay. He just got stuck with the pack he
was visiting.”
Eris stared at Sirius for a moment, trying to
decide if she could really be so lucky.
She hadn’t realized how much she’d come to care for her godfather until
he disappeared. When the reality that he
was safe finally sunk in, she burst into tears.
Sirius’ face fell and it only made her cry harder.
“No, no, sweetheart,” Sirius said urgently,
pulling her away form Hermione and to her feet.
“Didn’t you hear me? He’s fine. Madam Pomfrey is looking him over just for
good measure.”
Eris nodded silently and pulled
away with a sniffle. “I’m sorry. I’m just so happy that he’s okay.”
She looked up into Sirius’ eyes
then and couldn’t help but wonder how much worse the pain would have been if
he’d been the one missing. What if he
was sent off to conduct some scheme?
Without thinking twice about it, she pulled Sirius into a deep kiss,
crushing her mouth against his. She
vaguely heard Hermione and Ginny gasp behind her. It didn’t matter anymore. All that mattered was the way she felt in
that moment, knowing that Sirius was safe, Remus was safe…they all were for the
moment.
There was a strange tugging in her
gut then and she felt her magic begin to swirl.
The sound of Ginny’s voice finally penetrated through the haze. “Eris, you don’t know what you’re doing!”
Wrenching herself away, Eris fell
to the floor and felt her magic fly outwards.
Unfortunately, since her main elemental power was water, she and the
others ended up being doused in a sudden deluge out of thin air. She looked up sheepishly towards Sirius, and
relaxed when he saw his small smile.
“Can I bring you good news more often,” he
asked with a smirk.
“Not if it means the rest of us will be
subjected to a cold shower,” Ginny growled.
“Now beat it! Tell them we’ll be
in to see Remus as soon as we dry out our dorm.”
Sirius left, laughing all the
way. Eris turned a repentant look on
Hermione and Ginny. “I’m really sorry,
guys.”
“At least Sirius took that well,” Hermione
said with a shrug and began spelling the beds dry.
Ginny had a sly grin on her face. “That was a rather interesting display,
Eris.”
Eris blushed and shook her
head. “I don’t know what I was
thinking.”
“It gets hard to think when you’re in
love.” Ginny frowned then. “Did you even realize what you were
doing? It was just like that night in Grimmauld
Place.”
Eris growled and began to rapidly flick her wand, drying books and bits
of clothing that had gotten wet. “I lost
control. Its like I’m too people and the elf is very confused as to why I won’t allow
the bonding to occur. Thank you for
stopping me though. It wasn’t the proper
time for that to happen.”
Still, as they continued to clean
the room, Eris couldn’t help but wish that the bond had completed itself. There was a tiny part of her that wanted the
decision to be taken from her, her ethics be damned.
<hr>
Harry poked his nose into the
infirmary, fully intending to go and give Remus a bone crushing hug, only to
see Miss Roslyn sitting on the side of his bed, holding the wizard’s hand. It wasn’t this that confused him
however. No, it was when Miss Roslyn
bent down and kissed Remus that Harry’s mind blanked. Had he missed something?
