Chapter 27 Malfoy revealed
Voldemort was extremely unhappy, having finally remembered what it was about that blasted girl who dared to enter his chambers and rescue Snape. It was the stone she wore round her neck that finally clicked with him. He knew now where he’d seen it before. Her mother had always worn it. She must have passed it on to the child. But that child should have been dead. He gave explicit orders that she was to be beaten and starved until she died. It should have happened years ago. It had to be the same girl. And that wand she carried. That was no ordinary wand. From the reports he’d been getting, she was ensconced at Hogwarts under the watchful eye of that old fool Dumbledore and supposedly holed up with Snape.
Snape, he should be dead too. It was impossible to survive Mors ab gangraena. He was the only one who even knew about the ancient curse and there had never been a counter spell so how the hell could she still be at Hogwarts. It must be something to do with the girl. He decided to send Malfoy to find out if what he was hearing was true. The he would decide what to do about it.
“You have a beautiful voice, Miss Morrigan. Please do not stop singing on my account.”
Sky looked up into see the finely chiselled features and long platinum blonde hair that exactly matched the image of the man she brought up earlier this week; the man who sent the letter telling Dumbledore where she could be found.
“You.” She whispered. Moving to stand up, a hand appeared in front of her. She flinched slightly before realising that he was offering the hand to assist her, not strike her.
Sky took the hand and got to her feet but when she tried to pull her hand away he tightened his grip. Her eyes widened slightly and looked into a pair of cold grey piercing eyes. She tried to tug her hand away but he raised it to his lips and kissed it, giving her a small bow before letting go. Sky stared at him, her mouth agape, unsure how to react.
“Erm Mr Malfoy?”
“I am indeed. I am flattered you have taken the trouble to learn my identity. The headmaster or Professor Snape I presume.”
“No. I found out you sent that letter.”
Lucius’ face hardened,, a slight tic at the side of his jaw making her realise that she had shocked him with her revelation.
Well Sky didn’t care. She didn’t much like the look of this man’s eyes and Severus and Albus already warned her that he wasn’t a very nice person.
“I … I have to go in now. It was ni … nice meeting you.”
Turning to go, a hand wrapped round her arm and gently, but firmly prevented her from walking away.
“Miss Morrigan. I have travelled a great distance in order to meet you. Are you really going to leave me standing here?”
She was nervous now and wanted to get back to the castle where Severus was. He’d know what to do, what to say. “N …no. Why did you want to see me? Is it about the letter? Why did you send it? Why didn’t you sign it? How long have you known about me?”
“You have many questions, Miss Morrigan. Do you really wish me to answer them all out here?”
“Err no. You could come inside. I think the Headmaster wants to talk to you as well.”
“Indeed I do. Hello Lucius.”
Sky whipped round, relieved to see Albus. She yanked her arm out of the elder Malfoy’s grip and rushed to stand next to Albus. “It’s him Albus. It’s him.”
“I know my dear. Would you like to go and tell Professor Snape and have him meet me in my office.”
Without pausing to answer she took one last look at Malfoy and ran for the castle. A pair of steely grey eyes watched her retreating form.
“Shall we?”
Albus offered as he turned and walked back across the grounds. Lucius following at a leisurely pace. As soon as Sky entered the school, she ran down the dungeon corridor and burst into the potions classroom, startling all the students and earning herself an angry glare from Severus.
“Do you mind. We are in the middle of a lesson. I do not appreciate having you barge in here half dressed. Do you not know how to knock?”
Sky was shocked. He’d just spoken to her as if she were some unruly student. Without a word, she backed out of the room and slammed the door. Not sure what to do she stood for a minute and caught her breath.
Then she entered his mind. Severus was sitting back at his desk, fuming over the way Sky just ran into his classroom, disrupting his lesson. And she was next to naked. Those shorts and that t shirt were too tight and showed too much for his liking. He was thinking how best to talk to her about it later when an image came unbidden onto his mind. It was Sky laying down at the side of the lake, her eyes were closed and she got to her knees when she realised someone was standing over her. He watched as the scene between her and the Malfoy played out, followed by Albus’ timely arrival and her panicked dash to come here and find him.
“Class dismissed.”
He bellowed, clearing his desk and looking impatiently at the stunned students. They were not used to being dismissed early by Professor Snape.
“Hurry up or I may just change my mind.”
He growled, holding in a smirk as they scrambled to pack their things and get out of the classroom. Sky was still outside the classroom door when the students filed out and she had to push herself back to the opposite wall to avoid getting crushed by the onslaught. As soon as they cleared, Severus came out, locked and warded the door and looked her up and down.
“I suggest you put some clothes on before we go to the Headmaster’s office. I shall see you up there.”
He stalked up the corridor, leaving a confused and hurt Sky behind.
She didn’t think her shorts were that bad. They came halfway down her thighs and were comfortable. She huffed and went to their quarters, got changed into a simple blue sundress and pumps, fastened her hair back in a pony tail and opened the bedroom door into Albus’ office.
All three men were sat drinking tea, though Severus sat slightly away from them, glowering. The look of surprise on Malfoy’s face as Sky stepped through the door that led to the Headmasters private rooms, was almost enough to make her want to laugh. But she managed to restrain herself as he stood and bowed. He remained standing until she sat down on the seat next to Severus. She was still mad at him for how he treated her earlier but she felt safer when he was close to her.
Severus was relieved at first to discover she changed her clothes but when Sky sat down he scowled at the way her dress rode up, showing far too much thigh as far as he was concerned. He noticed the way Malfoy’s eyes strayed to her legs and stiffened his posture as he laid a hand possessively on her knee. A single eyebrow rose in response to the questioning look from Malfoy. Sky squirmed in her seat. She knew something was going on here but it was beyond her ken as to what. But at least Severus was touching her and it made her feel a bit braver.
“Mr Malfoy. You said you came to see me. Why?”
“I am sure the Headmaster has already informed you that I am a high standing member on the Board of Governors for this school. As such it is, my duty to ensure that the school runs smoothly and that the staff employed here are suitable to oversee the education of our children. What position do you hold at present, Miss Morrigan? I was not aware of any vacant positions at Hogwarts.”
“I … err …I”
“Miss Morrigan is a guest at our school, Lucius. At present, she resides under the care of Professor Snape.” Albus told him calmly.
“Does she indeed. And does Professor Snape also pay for her upkeep? As you know Headmaster, we do not have unlimited funds as regards Hogwarts. Taking in waifs and strays is not on Hogwarts’ list of priorities.”
Sky stared at him horrified. ‘Did he just call her a stray. Is that what she was? Just a hanger on?’
“Miss Morrigan is neither a waif nor a stray Lucius as you well know. She is here under my protection and will remain so. If the Board of Governors would prefer that I pay for her food and board then I am quite prepared to do so.”
“Indeed. And if Miss Morrigan prefers, there is an opening on staff if she wishes to take it up. Quite a few of our more elderly professors have expressed a wish for an assistant to help them with lesson preparation. It is quite within my rights to offer employment to Miss Morrigan should I so choose Mr. Malfoy.”
Lucius glared first at Snape and then at the Headmaster. Lucius had paid handsomely whoever was supposed to let the girl die, paid them to keep her alive until such time as it was feasible for him to have her removed. He knew from the outset that she would be a very powerful witch. Lucius had a vast library of ancient tomes at his disposal and knew the name Morrigan bore a deep significance in the history of the wizarding world. The fact she was a bastard child did not matter in her case. She was a powerful pureblood, she was spawned by the Dark Lord and he wanted control over her.
It would not have been possible to rescue her himself. Not with the Dark Lord always looking over his shoulder. That was why he sent the anonymous note to Dumbledore, knowing the old fool would not be able to resist sending out a rescue party for her. But now Lucius wanted to bring her into his fold. Draco was to court her and marry her. Draco wanted to marry Pansy Parkinson but his father would not hear of it, telling Draco that Pansy was nothing but a common slut. Now the Dark Lord realised who this Miss Morrigan was and told Lucius to get his hands on her if he could. This fitted in with Lucius’ plans perfectly.
At one time, he truly believed in the ideals of Voldemort. But as the years went by, he realised what a lunatic tyrant he really was. Lucius wanted out. But the only get out with the Dark Lord was death. Lucius Malfoy was not ready to die. Instead he wanted his son married to this girl. She would be the only one with the power to overthrow Voldemort.
“Then perhaps the more elderly Professors should proffer their resignations, if they are finding the workload too much of a burden.
In the meantime, I am willing to be charitable and offer a home to Miss Morrigan, rather then have her feel she is a burden on our already struggling resources. Draco would enjoy her company I am sure.”
Sky was appalled. She didn’t want to go live with strangers. She wanted to stay here with Severus.
“I’m not going with you. I don’t even know you. Anyway, I have my own place if I’m not allowed to stay here.”
Severus squeezed her leg slightly. He did not want her to reveal to him about the wall.
“And you still haven’t told us why you sent that letter. Or how you knew about me. And why would you want me in your house when you don’t know anything about me?”
“On the contrary Miss Morrigan, I know quite a bit about you. The reason I wrote the letter was because I was appalled when I discovered that one of our own kind was being kept in such appalling conditions. I am afraid I cannot reveal the source of my information as regards your whereabouts. It would be too dangerous for the person involved. I could not reveal my identity because of my own associations with certain members of the community. However, I am still willing to offer you a home. Your family was a very respected pureblood family. It is only fitting you be given the chance to live the kind of live you would have led, where circumstances different.”
She looked at Severus. His face was black with anger. He knew he could not compete with what Malfoy had to offer her. Severus was quite well off but he was not in the league of the Malfoy’s.
“He turned to her. “Sky the decision is yours. I cannot force you to stay here. But know that if you choose to go you will no longer be under my protection.”
Her eyes brimmed with tears. ‘Did he want her to go? She didn’t want to go but Severus didn’t say he wanted her to stay.’
“Severus, tell me what to do. I don’t want to go with them but if you say I have to …”
Lucius noted her unshed tears and the hurt and doubt on her face and smiled smugly. Clearly Snape was not doing anything to alleviate those feelings. He had her.
“See. The girl is obviously insecure here. Miss Morrigan, be assured that when you are residing at Malfoy Mansion you will feel secure at all times. Now go and pack your things and we can be on our way.”
“What? Severus please.” She pleaded.
The Potions Master needed no further conformation and stood to address Malfoy.
“She will be staying with me Lucius. Thank you for your … kind … offer, but it will not be necessary. Things will stay as they are. Miss Morrigan shall remain with me. I bid you good day.”
He took Sky’s hand and led her out of the office, down the spiral staircase and back to the dungeons. He slammed the door behind them as they entered the study making her jump.
“Severus, are you angry?”
“What? Of course I’m bloody angry.” He roared as he poured himself a large whisky. “What did you expect after that fiasco?”
“Are … are you angry at me?”
He whirled to face her and saw the fear and tears in her beautiful midnight eyes, his own softened a little.
“No I am not angry with you Sky. I am angry at the audacity of that arrogant oaf up there.” He motioned upward with his head. “He actually believed he could just waltz in her and take you with him. How dare he? And why? What is his motive?”
“We can find out easily enough. I thought you were going to let him take me you know.”
“Sky, I could not have stopped you had you wished to go. But believe me when I tell you that I was praying you would not. And I would certainly not have forced you.”
Severus took hold of her, holding her close and resting his cheek atop of her head.
“I already told you that I want you with me forever Sky. My feelings have not changed. I thought you knew how I feel about you.”
“Sometimes I do. Sometimes I’m not so sure. You were really mad when I burst into the classroom today. But I was scared.”
“That is how I am Sky. I cannot change what I am. But just because I get angry does not mean I think any less of you.”
“Severus?”
“Hmm?”
“Is there really a job here? I don’t want to be a burden on the school whatsits. I’d like to work. It’s boring all day with nothing to do.”
She was surprised when he started to shake and she realised he was laughing.
“School whatsits? Where do you get these expressions from? Listen, if Albus says there is a position here, you can guarantee that there will be. You are not and never have been a burden. Do you understand?”
She nodded and smiled. “Shall we find out what he’s up to then?”
“Go ahead. You managed to filter your way into my mind easily enough. Lucius should be easy. He never was very good when it came to occlumency.”
“Occluwhatsy?”
“Just do it.” he chuckled. “Then I will show you just how much I want you to stay.”
They sat on the sofa and she drifted into Lucius Malfoy’s mind.
He was busy arguing with the Headmaster about how he could offer her so much more then she could get here. How he could teach her the finer points of being a person of good breeding. ‘He makes me sound like a bloody cat.’ She thought. Sky continued rifling through his mind until she found what she wanted.
Severus watched as her face changed from an angry red to white, shock registering on her features as she delved deeper and deeper into the mind of Lucius Malfoy.
When Severus saw the absolute horror on her face he took hold of her hand. “Sky. Sky come out now. You have seen enough, please don’t dig any further.”
Sky easily found what she was looking for but other things started grabbing her attention. She saw some of the horrendous things that Malfoy did in the name of pureblood supremacy. Murder, rape, mutilation and torture.
Severus’ voice cut into her mind and she pulled out and looked at him for a split second before rushing to the bathroom and heaving into the toilet.
This time Severus joined her and stayed by her side. He knew she’d seen things she should not have seen. He had a pretty good idea what those things were. He too had done his fair share of those things when he took the mark and became a Deatheater. Though it was never something he particularly enjoyed. Lucius however always seemed to relish his actions.
Severus wiped her brow with a damp cloth, refusing to leave her even when she tried to push him away and he felt sick himself.
He accio’d a small bottle from the bathroom cabinet and held it to her lips.
She tried to push it away.
“Sky drink it. It will help. Just take a little.”
She managed a small sip and the wretching eased off so he urged her to finish the bottle.
“Alright now?”
“Severus, what he did. Horrible things.”
“I know what he has done Sky. You do not need to tell me.”
He lifted her and carried her into the bedroom, laying her gently on the bed and climbing on beside her.
“You know what I was Sky. You know that I too have done much the same as Lucius in the past.”
“And did you enjoy it Severus?”
“Of course not. What kind of wizard do you think I am?”
“A different kind to him. He enjoyed what he did. It made him feel good, powerful.”
“And he’s known about me all along Severus. Ever since I was taken he’s known. He paid someone to keep me alive. He wants me to marry Draco so he, Lucius will have control of me. And he wants to … what we do. But not like we do. He wants to hurt me like he hurt those other women and children. And he wants me to kill Voldemort too. He’s fed up of kowtowing to him so he needs me to get rid of him and the only way to do that is to have power over me. That’s the real reason he’s here Severus. But all those years, he knew where I was, what I was going through. Why did he leave me there? Why didn’t he get me sooner. Hide me. Voldemort didn’t have to know. I hate Lucius Malfoy. I hate him.”
