Chapter 27
“Why did you not reduce your case, or at least levitate it?”
“Never thought about it. I’ve got used to lugging them about like this.”
“Them?”
“Yeah, cases, bags, it’s kind of automatic. Did you always know you could do magic?”
“Of course.” He replied, returning to the kitchen and pouring two cups of tea.
Lucy sat down opposite him at the table. “What was it like?”
“What was what like?”
“Growing up with it, doing magic and not having others think you were a freak?”
“Is that how it was for you?”
“Yeah mostly. The staff at Springs were a bit scared of me I think. And my teachers weren’t too keen when strange things happened. I didn’t know it was me causing those things, at least not at first. And it wasn’t as if I even had control over what I did. When they sent me to Montford I started learning to hold back on my emotions and odd stuff didn’t happen as often.”
“And you never attributed the strange happenings to yourself?”
“I suppose did, I just didn’t want to believe it was me, but I never guessed I was a witch. I always thought they were ugly, warty old women with stripy socks and evil cackles. Like on the Wizard of Oz.”
“The what? Never mind. You altered your appearance when you first arrived, was that the first time you did so?”
“Yeah, I didn’t do it on purpose, but I kind of liked it once I got over the shock. It’s gonna be strange sleeping in that big castle. This is the first proper home I’ve ever had.”
“It will be a week at most. Besides, you have slept at Hogwarts before.”
“That was different, I was in hospital. Anyway, it doesn’t mean I liked it there. Professor, Hermione and the others, when we were at that house, they said they live at Hogwarts during term time. I wont have to do that will I? I only just found my gran and I don’t want to leave her. I’m not ready for it.”
Severus studied her for a few moments. To him Hogwarts was home, had been home since he first set foot in the place as an eleven year old. This girl however had spent sixteen years waiting to find a place she belonged, he supposed the idea of uprooting again, even a couple of miles down the road, was rather daunting. “That is something which needs to be addressed by your grandmother and the Headmaster. I have no idea what arrangements will be made on your behalf. If you are allowed to remain living here, it would still mean spending at least one night a week at the castle. Astronomy classes for instance are always conducted late in the evening. Were you to earn detention, in is also likely you will be kept busy until very late and it would be neither safe nor feasible to leave the grounds at such a late hour.”
Lucy knew that made sense, but she hoped against hope that gran and the Headmaster would come up with an idea that let her stay home rather than live at the castle.
Before she could say anything else, the Professor paled, winced, and grabbed his arm.
“What’s up? Have you hurt your arm?” She asked him.
Severus stood and looked at her for a moment. “I must leave you, I prefer not to but I have no choice. Do NOT leave this house alone, floo call the headmaster and tell him I was called away.” He turned and walked through the living room and out the front door.
Lucy stared after him, wondering what the hell just happened. Did she say something she shouldn’t have? She didn’t think so. “What the hell is floo call?” Lucy looked at the fireplace, gran called it a floo and spoke into it sometimes. So what now? She did not fancy lighting it and sticking her head into the flames.
“HELLO.” She shouted into the empty grate, feeling absolutely stupid when she did so. “HEADMASTER. CAN YOU HEAR ME?”
“Course he can’t hear me. Bloody stupid idiotic… bah.” She wished Maxi had come with them now, he could have gone and got the Headmaster. Well that settled it, she would just have to stay here the night and go back to Hogwarts in the morning. Truth be told, she didn’t fancy walking back to the castle on her own in the pitch black. That road was lonely and pretty creepy.
Albus was concerned a couple of hours later when Severus and Lucy did not return to the castle. He was greatly concerned when they still didn’t arrive an hour after that. “What do you think Maxi? Should we investigate?”
A deep woof confirmed the dogs agreement and Albus threw some powder into the floo.
When Headmaster and dog stepped out of the fireplace of the Grindelwald cottage to find the place in darkness Albus grew increasingly worried. The torches lit automatically as soon as they sensed the presence of a human, but it did not put Albus’ mind at ease. “See if you can find them Maxi.”
Maxi sniffed about, then ran up the stairs and started woofing at Lucy’s bedroom door.
“Huh, what’s up maxi? Maxi?” Rubbing her eyes she sat up and threw back the covers. “What are you doing here?” She asked, opening the door and looking down the landing cautiously. Maxi’s barking resounded round the house and Lucy let out a screech when a tall figure appeared in the shadows at the bottom of the stairs.
“It’s alright Lucy, it’s me, Professor Dumbledore. I was worried when you and my Potion Master did not return. He is not up there with… “
“WHAT? NO! Let me get my dressing gown and I’ll be right down.”
Albus was sitting in an armchair, waiting patiently when she thudded down the stairs yawning. Her heart was still beating fast, the sight of someone in the house had given her a real scare.
She made tea as she told him about the Professor going pale and looking like he was in pain. “He said he had to go, but he didn’t say where. Then he told me to floo call you but he didn’t say how. I shouted into it but all that happened was I felt daft. He said not to leave the house alone and I didn’t fancy the idea anyway. I was gonna come back in the morning.”
“Thank you.” Albus accepted the cup of tea. “Hetty has not taught you about floo travel and calling yet.”
“No, she just calls it the floo. Where do you think he went?”
“Severus? Most likely he was summoned.”
“Who by?”
Albus raised an eyebrow and she brought a hand to her mouth. “Voldemort again? The one who did all that crap to him last time? Sorry, all that stuff.”
“The very one. How long has he been gone?”
She looked at the clock. “About two, two and a half hours. How long is he gone usually?”
“It varies. Hours, days, sometimes weeks.”
“Bloo… crickey. What do you think he wants to see him about?”
“I have no idea. “Do you have your belongings packed and ready to go?”
“Yes but… “
“Good, put something on your feet and you can experience your first floo travel. I have no intention of leaving you here on your own, and I must go back to the castle.”
She stuck her feet into a pair of trainers and grabbed her case.
Albus tapped his wand on the suitcase and it disappeared, then threw some floo powder into the fireplace.
A blaze of green flames burst into life.
“Hogwarts, my office.” Albus said clearly. After you Miss Grindelwald. Do keep your elbows and knees tucked in wont you.”
“What? You have to be kidding me.“
“Not at all. Maxi, you go first.”
The dog jumped into the flames and Lucy gasped. “Maxi. What have you done?” She yelled, almost hysterical.
Maxi is safe in my office, flooing is a mode of travel for us. It’s quite common and completely painless. Now go ahead, I will follow you directly.”
Lucy could tell by his expression he would brook no further argument. But Maxi didn’t yelp, in fact he leapt into the flames as if he knew what he was doing. Stepping onto the hearth, she closed her eyes tight and inched forward.
She jumped when the headmaster placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Lucy, I would not ask you to do something that would cause you harm. Trust me, just step into the fire.”
“Right.” Closing her eyes again she stepped in, then opened them wide as she spun uncontrollably. She forgot all about keeping her arms and legs tucked in and when she finally fell out of the headmasters fire and onto the floor, her knees and elbows were scraped and she was covered in soot.
When Albus stepped elegantly through the floo, he stifled a chuckle at the sight of the soot blackened girl on his office floor being set upon by an excited Maxi.
“Gerroff me Maxi. Thpdt. Yuck.”
“Allow me.” Albus said, an amused smirk on his face as he offered a hand to help her stand.
A wave of his wand and she was clean, her scrapes healed.
“I got a mouthful of soot, can you get that too? Please.”
Albus couldn’t help but laugh a bit as he pointed his wand at her mouth. “I suggest you clean your teeth again before retiring. The mouth is a difficult place to scourgify.”
“Hmm. Hey, you healed my knees and elbows, thanks. That was dreadful, I don’t think I like floo travel. How come you and maxi didn’t get all mucky? And how come you stepped out, when I got thrown?”
“Practice my dear. Practice.”
“No thanks. I’ll end up battered and bruised before I get the hang of it. Headmaster, will you tell me when Seve… Professor Snape gets back. Please.”
“I will. We may need your assistance if… you seem to have the ability to alleviate the symptoms of cruciatus, it is more than likely you will be called on to use that talent of yours on occasion.”
